Am i the only one that has noticed some significant slowdowns in android 4.3 as opposed to 4.2.2? Even simple things like pulling down the notification bar or swiping between tabs in chrome have laggy animations now, which wasn't the case before.
Most will say it's just you. What ROM are you using?

Do a clean install and see if that helps. I've never experienced anything slow with this phone.

Ive never had anything else but stock rom on this phone, never even rooted it.
I'm on stock rooted 4.3 and it's significantly smoother. Haven't even bothered flashing anything else because I'm so satisfied, plus I wanted to experience stock awhile so I know what is what.

Mine felt that way for a day but seemed to really smooth out after a few reboots and time I believe it might be the way the new OS deals with the phones data just needs a bit of time to smooth itself out.
The OTA update has made my phone nothing but faster which is great because this phone was never even close to being slow in the first place.
i've been using Slimbean 4.3 Build 1 Alpha and its really smooth, only a couple of known bugs. Faster than Weekly 7.8.

Yes, I have the exact same issue as you. Driving me nuts. I'm running the stock rom but Faux kernel. Unfortunately, I don't recall if I had this issue prior to the kernel change. Going to try to revert back to stock kernel. If that doesn't help I'm going to re-flash from scratch. I flashed the OTA...maybe something went wrong.
UPDATE: I flashed back to the stock kernel and all lag in the animations are gone. Everything is silky smooth. I had tried different CPU governors in faux kernel before going back to stock but they all had the same lag. Odd though, I've never had performance issues with faux before.

Swiping down the notification panel is too glitchy. And also when I take screenshot, it slows down and I am not able to see the SC's animation.
It is noticeably slow for me. Even home screen animations are slow.
Any fix guys?

Try a clean flash of stock 4.3 ROM (JWR66V) since a lot of the custom ROMs are in the early stages of development. Maybe refrain from flashing a custom kernel until you experience 100% stock for a bit.
Totally stock and mine seems to be performing better than it was.

I tried than kanged
It did seem a littly off to me. I did a factory reset after receiving it ota but I couldn't do stock. Seemed like the phone got hotter quicker and touch responsiveness was a little slow also IMO

I am experiencing this too, but I am on Rasbean 4.3. For some reason compared to stoch, Rasbean feels choppy. IDK why because RAS is an amazing developer. I did a full wipe too anyone else experience this on 4.3 custom roms?

Just done what you have listed above and the answer is no; its not slower, at least my stock install. I don't have bugs like the weird black bar when selecting recently used apps
. I'll continue to monitor but for now its fine.
I experienced the same less than smooth performance as well. It got a little better in smoothness and less bugging out over time, but it may just be me getting acquainted with it and being a placebo.
This was from a factory image flash, but I may give it a go again if it continues to be a problem. I doubt it'll fix it.
Just got a new Nexus 4 (white) and updated it to 4.3... Smooth as N4 has always been... Completely stock

Look in the thread called "the LAG thread'. Check your storage, if it is nearly full, you need to do a factory reset and not let it get so full again. This apparent software bug hit my otherwise perfect Nexus 7, and the factory reset solved it. It's smooth as butter again.

Nope that can't be it. It was like it from the box and there's still nothing on my nexus can it be a defect? I've just checked and my CPU is at 100% all the time and all that's running is stock processes. I can post a screen shot if it can be of help. Also I've updated to 4.1.2 and followed the advice of running the forever gone app and deleted every item from SD card. It still lags.

I would try flashing it with a complete stock 4.1.2 rom from google . Maybe the original flash was bad from the factory... if you do that and its still lags send it back RMA ...
One thing that made my N7 lag the second day after I got was the damn "My Library" widget on the home screen. I got rid of it and now it's silky smooth. I also don't clutter it with a lot of widgets or anything.

You people sure are fast with the "flash again"and the "factory resets" (-;
Install OS manager from the market and look what's using your CPU that much.
go into the devices main settings, developer options.. first try enabling force gpu rendering. secondly, try disabling the animations(or try turning them to .5).

Give a try to my ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33104070
There's nothing wrong with your device hardware wise. Whatever is causing your processor to run at 100% is creating the lag.
Like others have said, find what app is causing at and let us know. It might just be the media scanner.
I recently purchased an S4 (switched from an iPhone 5) and am generally enjoying it. However, the phone feels a lot more sluggish than it should, given its substantial hardware. I rooted the phone and installed TWRP, and am mulling over custom ROMs now.
My question is regarding the removal of the resource hog known as TouchWiz. If I understand correctly, the only way to remove it (and see any real benefits) is to flash a non-TouchWiz kernel and then an AOSP ROM, yeah? If I'm wrong, I'd appreciate a little guidance on what needs to be done to restore a more "stock Android" feel.
Yeah flashing a rom will do it
But try nova launcher first

Try a custom kernel also. Most do see a smoother experience after switching. Otherwise just do a nandroid and flash some custom ones. Then can always revert back if needed.

I thought that. After 3 generations of samsungs, ive owned. I figured its part of them. So I rooted/debloated/greenified and its running great. Im very picky on how my computers/phones run. I cant stand lag, and will not have it. I was just let down that the out of box "Next Big thing" Had the same lags as the sgs1. Yes we on xda can fix it but what about the average consumer? Hell no. Or would the average consumer not notice?

I would think the average consumer would notice. The lag is considerable out of the box however it seems to not be 100% of the devices. Some have reported smooth operation since day one. Mine was not smooth but very laggy. The MDL didn't get rid of it and Samsung really needs to get on the stick and should be embarrassed to release the device in that state. Obviously I fixed the lag but with the specs it should of been smooth as silk out of the box. Personally I don't think Touchwiz is the issue but lack of optimization of the features.

If it is fixable by flashing a custom kernel/rom or custom launcher (reported by some) than don't see how it can be a faulty phone. Not by way of hardware anyways.

Ok well yeh that sounds like a bad phone.I say that because mine is stock and dont have that problem.this is the fastest phone ive ever had. And of course you shouldnt have to install a rom to get your phone "right",so thats another reason I say bad phone.it should fly right out the box,esp bone stock before you add app s. I have over 200 and it zooms
Lag was in and out of apps. Returning home. Scrolling through screens stock weather widget would take a few seconds to appear. All over felt quirky. After a lil tweaking it runs great

For starters I disabled some features. Went into svoice and disabled double tap home button. to open svoice. That adds lag to returning to home as it waits a few ms waiting for 2nd tap. Rooted of course and debloated the rom did a lot. No swype! Its laggy on everything. Plus a few days gone by and kernel & everything just setteling in. I have not flashed kernel or messed with cpu. Speeding up animations I've always felt it makes phone really glitchy so I leave it at 1.
Edit greenify also. disabled few apps like The Score that runs always. Greenify is a must. It should come stock

Hi all, the nexus 4 is the devices that I want to buy, but I wanted to ask you something: is it the most lagfree device avaible in the market? How is it after installing many apps? I've read in many reviews that's the smoothest android device, but I would like some confirmations
PS: I have a galaxy ace and I know that the nexus 4 will definitely be a super-upgrade
I've got about 100 or so installed apps and it works just fine.
Edit: just checked. I have 129 apps.
From a Nexus 4 bathing in Jelly Beans
Its definitely one of the fastest out there if not the fastest. The pure Google experience that you get with the phone is awesome. If you like to flash your phone there's a huge variety of roms that can be personalized to the tiniest details, and with the right combination of a rom and a decent kernel you will forget what lag is.

With a nexus 4 you won't "need" to flash anything, you can do it if you want some extra customizations, but even the stock rom is lag free. Install apex or nova launcher and boost animation/window speed, and you'll get an even snappier experience.

I played with HTC One which is claimed to be the fastest, smoothest, and powerful Android phone. Yes it is! But sometimes you will have the stutter feeling when opening apps, just sometimes though, and it is somewhat unpredictable. its fast but not quite like a Nexus. you have to experience it to know what i mean. plus most apps are developed based on a Nexus, so yeah you'll have the best experience.
I have about 113 apps and still no lag. stock everything until last week i flashed franco kernel. planning to jump onto cyanogenmod tomorrow.
With all the things you say, you make me desire more and more the nexus!
I'm on stock, unlocked and rooted with 700hrs of up-time so far, no crashes other than a couple of 3rd party apps and no lag whatsoever =)

hey man, I came from cooper too and now I have an N4. It's a really good phone, specially when you flash franco's kernel and CM10.1 nightlys (yeah, you don't have anymore to wait updates from Maclaw, OldDroid or biel ). Battery life is good, and with franco kernel it's even better.
All the UI and system apps are really smooth, but when using some apps it's a pain to scrool (apps's fault). Videos and music also play without interruptions. Buy it, you will not regret.
Well I also have a note 10.1 and I'm not sure I'm noticing the lag you're talking about in the facebook app...

I don't think what you are describing is lag caused by the Nexus 4...
It's lag caused by your data speed.
With your facebook example, scolling sometimes stuters as it downloads the actual data & information from facebook itself.
The facebook app tries to place new information at the top & then it tens to want to automatically jump to the top.
If you were connected to LTE or even a fast WiFi connection that problem would be less noticable.
But as said earlier... it's just bad coding from facebook.
Come on man, the Nexus is amazing...
It has the same amount of RAM as my work computer, & lags less.
Personally I find the Nexus 4 to be a very fast device, I wont say lag free as I can certainly see some lag but is it the fastest device out? You bet, ive played around with a very new note 2 and an s4, the N4 seems to be much faster than the Note2 and marginally faster than the s4 just pressing the home button on those two devices show about .5 seconds slower than my n4 in action.
Battery life? Hmm struggle with mine if I am honest but I get a day now, it seems I get way less than everyone else and I am not sure why but I feel i got unlucky with my device and I pray to god I have a faulty power button or something so I can RMA within the warranty to hope for a new device haha.
Its the best value phone and has pretty much the same specs as the top phones, whats not to like? And its a Nexus .
Maybe I should add that the device is also faster than the iphones/ipads I have used which shocked me as people always praised their performance... lol, the N4 is simply held back by some poorly coded applications but what can you do? Hope Developers get better

Strange; I install the factory ROM onto my N4 and N10, and was quickly reminded as to what lag truly was... it was not pleasing :/
Hi all, my old nexus 7 tablet is totally unresponsive after updating to android 4.3. The problem can be recreated in every single browser you run. After several minutes of browsing the device begins to lag heavy to a point where performance is do degraded that even the return to home or multitask buttons are taking ages to respond. I am totally confused, a update with a trim function supposed to speed tings up is dousing massive problems. I have searched trough the forums in the web and many are reporting same problems.
Does any one here experience the same ?

I'm in the process of trying this and it seems to be working for the time being. That said, I have had good, early results before and within a day or so the lag is back. This is the first attempt at flashing 4.3 ( I updated to 4.3 through OTA before) so I'm hoping it has a better result. I even performed a factory reset after flashing just so I know all bases are covered. If the lag does return then I'm at a loss as to why. Just as well I'm away to get the new Nexus7.

Can't say I've noticed any detrimental effects on battery time for being on 4.3. If anything its better, if not just the same. Maybe it's still a bit early to tell one way or another, but all my woes seem to be gone. I'm not holding my breath though.
One thing I will say is that it doesn't half spoil a device if you have to spend more time troubleshooting, than actually using the thing.

I also had the browser-produced lag. It was present no matter what ROM I used (Paranoid Android, SlimBean, CyanogenMod, Purity) and no matter what build (JWR66V, JSS15Q, even JWR66Y) I used. I made a strange decision, and downgraded to 4.1.2. Now I'm rather enjoying myself. I hope 4.3 will eventually work on my Nexus 7. Until then, back to the past.
Its there. And it happens a lot. On 4.2.2 and on 4.3. I had to disable all transitions/animations because it is annoying to have a beastly phone with choppy stuttering animations
Inb4 my HTC one is silky smooth.. ..

I don't have any of the issues you are referring to. My One GPE runs extremely smoothly with transitions/animations.

Uhhh maybe because most people aren't having issues with chopiness? What GE rom(s) have you been using? I've been running sinless and it's silky smooth.

No problems here either

I think I'm running the first or second 4.2.2 ROM that came out. I also used the 4.3 ROM with the ridiculous huge icons and the animations stutter. Not all the time. But quite often.
Tell me what ROM you guys are using which is not choppy?
Running sinless and I don't have the choppiness. It's 4.3 as well. Have you tried fully wiping before flashing?
Ive run all the GE's 4.3 and it seems pretty choppy for the specs. For example, scrolling to side pictures in gallery isn't perfectly smooth. I didn't notice the very slight choppiness until I met the Moto X, which has worse specs but seems to pull out on top in overall smoothness
Android just isn't perfectly smooth. You have to deal with it. There was a reason for Google Project Butter in the first place and I highly doubt they could fix all the lag in a one go. However, don't get me wrong. The current state of smoothness is manageable and perfectly fine. Yet for a trained eye it is still not at the level of iOS.
All the guys saying their android device is perfectly smooth were probably saying the same thing back in the ICS days. Until they realized that it can be smoother after Google announced Project Butter.
I'm running the stock 4.3 image posted up and I do very occasionally get a few dropped frames but nothing to bother me about - quite surprised how well it runs tbh!
I have the HTC One GPE edition and there is no choppyness at all. My Nexus 4 was very choppy on 4.2.2 but it went almost away with 4.3. Still HTC One is much smoother.
I remember noticing this when I did GE convertion on 4.2.2. I think i figured out that the stock kernel is ramping up the cpu frequency too slow sometimes, try the performance CPU governor as see if things gets smoother. Haven't noticed the lag on 4.3 tho, not sure if it disappeared or I just got used to it. I noticed the same behavior on my Nexus 4 sometimes.

I went from iPhone 5 to the HTC one and converted it to Google play edition. I am running 4.3 and see little to no difference in smoothness between the one and the iPhone.

Yes it's true. With sense I never had a shred of stutter but I'm on my second stock GE 4.3 and still have to lower animation settings to look "perfect". I'm still happy though, few tiny stutters don't bother me but makes me wonder why sense never did that.

That troll face fits you well sir.
Better yet try AHRD. Its the bee's knees.
"why is nobody mentioning the choppy animations in the GE??"
On a stock unmolested GPE (4.3) - no choppiness whatsoever. Animations fly like turd off a lubricated shovel.
I am having same problem on GE 4.3 .... However i thought its because of Modaco Switch that i am using...
The htc sense 5 is very smooth ... Hats off to HTC for that... I had been using iphones from years .. Until i sold iphone 5 to get Htc one...smoothness is not on par with iphones but enough to satisfy me... Thanks HTC

I agree 100%. Android will probably never be as smooth as an iPhone. And so what. I personally could care less if my phone drops a few frames here and there. If people have the time to worry about it then they should just get an iPhone or WP if they want a super smooth UI/UX. An to answer the question, OP, I am on 100% stock GPE 4.3 and i rarely see and lags. If there are, they are very subtle and i almost never notice them at all.

That's definitely not a fact. I use and setup iPhone 4/4s, 5's and they still have stutters and hiccups like jelly bean. No difference. I hate it when people's default answer is "get an iPhone for perfection". Obviously you haven't used enough iPhones to get an educated opinion.

Well, sure they have hiccups from time to time, like for example the new youtube app on the iphone 4, it lags as hell, but things like that are to be expected.
I was talking solely about the fluidity of the UI animations, I am still amazed how fluid my fiance's iphone 4 is when I get to use it.
And nobody said about iphone being perfect. Like myself for example, there is a reason I have switched from iphone to android devices and I am not planning to go back.
I am just admitting that iOS was always better in regard of UI animations despite the inferior hardware. Android on the other hand is getting there, or the current generation cpus are (getting ready for android) I should say .
