Nexus 4: the most lagfree android device? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, the nexus 4 is the devices that I want to buy, but I wanted to ask you something: is it the most lagfree device avaible in the market? How is it after installing many apps? I've read in many reviews that's the smoothest android device, but I would like some confirmations
PS: I have a galaxy ace and I know that the nexus 4 will definitely be a super-upgrade

I've got about 100 or so installed apps and it works just fine.
Edit: just checked. I have 129 apps.

Its definitely one of the fastest out there if not the fastest. The pure Google experience that you get with the phone is awesome. If you like to flash your phone there's a huge variety of roms that can be personalized to the tiniest details, and with the right combination of a rom and a decent kernel you will forget what lag is.

Oh, I know what flashing is and I think I will mess around with that!

With a nexus 4 you won't "need" to flash anything, you can do it if you want some extra customizations, but even the stock rom is lag free. Install apex or nova launcher and boost animation/window speed, and you'll get an even snappier experience.

I played with HTC One which is claimed to be the fastest, smoothest, and powerful Android phone. Yes it is! But sometimes you will have the stutter feeling when opening apps, just sometimes though, and it is somewhat unpredictable. its fast but not quite like a Nexus. you have to experience it to know what i mean. plus most apps are developed based on a Nexus, so yeah you'll have the best experience.
I have about 113 apps and still no lag. stock everything until last week i flashed franco kernel. planning to jump onto cyanogenmod tomorrow.

With all the things you say, you make me desire more and more the nexus!

I'm on stock, unlocked and rooted with 700hrs of up-time so far, no crashes other than a couple of 3rd party apps and no lag whatsoever =)

Had my N4 since Xmas and whilst the UI is smooth scrolling in certain apps is a pain, like XDA or tapatalk or facebook.
I have tried loads of roms, currently using Sabermod which has the least lag but there is still judder issues with some apps, ALL android devices that I have used (N1, S2, S3, N4) have suffered this problem. Until all major apps act as lag free as my launcher I cannot say the N4 is lag free

The problem there is the app itself

hey man, I came from cooper too and now I have an N4. It's a really good phone, specially when you flash franco's kernel and CM10.1 nightlys (yeah, you don't have anymore to wait updates from Maclaw, OldDroid or biel ). Battery life is good, and with franco kernel it's even better.
All the UI and system apps are really smooth, but when using some apps it's a pain to scrool (apps's fault). Videos and music also play without interruptions. Buy it, you will not regret.

Well I also have a note 10.1 and I'm not sure I'm noticing the lag you're talking about in the facebook app...

I've had every galaxy s series phone available from the vibrant to the sII then the s3 tried the s4....and absolutely nothing comes close to the Nexus experience period.

Compared next to the s4 this phone actually opens and closes apps faster by a split second or so, but the dual core s3 is faster than the s4 in my opinion so....

I don't think what you are describing is lag caused by the Nexus 4...
It's lag caused by your data speed.
With your facebook example, scolling sometimes stuters as it downloads the actual data & information from facebook itself.
The facebook app tries to place new information at the top & then it tens to want to automatically jump to the top.
If you were connected to LTE or even a fast WiFi connection that problem would be less noticable.
But as said earlier... it's just bad coding from facebook.
Come on man, the Nexus is amazing...
It has the same amount of RAM as my work computer, & lags less.

Personally I find the Nexus 4 to be a very fast device, I wont say lag free as I can certainly see some lag but is it the fastest device out? You bet, ive played around with a very new note 2 and an s4, the N4 seems to be much faster than the Note2 and marginally faster than the s4 just pressing the home button on those two devices show about .5 seconds slower than my n4 in action.
Battery life? Hmm struggle with mine if I am honest but I get a day now, it seems I get way less than everyone else and I am not sure why but I feel i got unlucky with my device and I pray to god I have a faulty power button or something so I can RMA within the warranty to hope for a new device haha.
Its the best value phone and has pretty much the same specs as the top phones, whats not to like? And its a Nexus .
Maybe I should add that the device is also faster than the iphones/ipads I have used which shocked me as people always praised their performance... lol, the N4 is simply held back by some poorly coded applications but what can you do? Hope Developers get better

GS3 vs N4 multitasking

A quick question for you lucky people who have got your N4s:
What's the multitasking like? I'm hoping it must be flawless with 2gigs of RAM?
Can someone who has GTA3 tell me if you can pick up exactly where you left off, if you've gone out of the game to do other things for a while? On my current phone GS3, it has the annoying habit of kicking me back to the beginning of the last mission I started if I leave the game for any reason. Is this a RAM limitation on my phone, or does GTA3 do this on all phones?
EDIT: I should mention I'm using the international GS3 i9300, that only has 1GB RAM.

My biggest problem with my older phones was that they would constantly close out the apps that I needed to stay open like contacts, messaging, phone. It annoyed me that my old clam shell phones would instantly open contacts and my G2 couldn't open then faster than 4 seconds or so. This thing leaves all those open and they all open instantaneously.

Flawless x2. Seriously, apps stay in memory for a considerably greater amount of time than my Atrix 2, and obviously longer than my Captivate. It makes switching to almost anything smooth and snappy.
Flawless.

To be honest with you, multitasking has completely amazed me on the N4. On the Gnex, apps would close right away. With the N4, I go back to the browser at the end of the day, and the page I loaded hours earlier is still in memory In fact, I have yet to see my phone go below 950mb RAM remaining. I really think 2gb was overkill (1.5 would've easily done the job), but hey, I'm not complaining Also, keep in mind that I don't use any widgets at all, and I have very few things running in the background aside from Skype, so others may have a different experience.
Edit: As for GTA, it might be the game doing this. For example, Livingsocial is really annoying like that too. It doesn't matter if you just hit home and come back right away, it'll start from beginning. Yet, World of Goo, a much more demanding app, will come back exactly as I left it even when I leave to browse the internet for a while. Some developers really need to get with the program. I personally don't have GTA, so I couldn't tell you specifically.
Perfect. No other word to describe it. So much so I've noticed the phone stuttering a bit when scrolling (like a TINY bit, much less than any other android phone normally) and out of instinct opened the task killer to find 30+ applications all RUNNING. Including GTA3,

OK, I know its good, but 30 RUNNING? You do realize some stay in the launcher but aren't running, right? So you clicked them and they all didn't need to reload? I find that hard to believe. Someone should do a stress test of how many apps you can open before they need to reload when you go back to them and post it on YouTube

[Q] ATT S4, Feels choppy ?

I'm not sure if there is too much crap in the default kernel, or if the cpu is being underclocked somewhere. But this 'feels' choppier to me then the S3 ever did which should not be the case. I can be in facebook and just scrolling along and poof .5 sec lag then it jumps ahead of where I wanted to go, and I am seeing this all over. Even in the play store installing apps. Suggestions ?

Thank God it's not just me. I just exchanged the One that I bought on the 23rd for the S4 today and noticed a bunch of lag. Kind of upsetting. All the reviews I watched there was no lag at all. The One and the S4 have the same chip but the One is clocked at 1.7. Doesn't make any sense that it's snappier than the S4. I REALLY hope I don't regret my decision because the One I had was very good quality control wise..
I've noticed a bit of a slow down when unlocking from the lock screen and opening the app drawer. Nothing major but pretty annoying. The One I traded in today had nothing like that. Oh well.

I also experience lag on my gs4. Not terrible, but my gs3 is faster in everyday use.
It's gotta be able to be fixed through an update right? If it's happening to all of us..
My international exynos I9500 has a bunch of lag also so don't feel bad guys. My guess is that it has to do with the 4.2 Jellybean. That version is pretty much optimized for the Nexus 4 (which I had) and had almost zero lag. That was probably the snappiest android device I've used along with the Note 2.
The HTC One is still on 4.1 so my guess once it's updated to 4.2 it will lag just the same until the overlays are optimized for it (Sense and TW).
In this meantime it's kinda bullsh1t that a phone with this much power still has more lag than a prior gen Galaxy S3.
I use a note 2 and I see the lag in the s4. A new "flagship" device shouldn't have this much lag on it even with all the bloat... The s3 didn't even lag like this which is kinda sad.

I9305 owner, question about nexus 4

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting rid of my S3 LTE for a Nexus 4, as one thing that really irritates me about my s3 is that scrolling is not smooth with apps such as facebook, or any apps with listviews and images.
I've read that the nexus 4 is "buttery smooth", so I just wanted to ask, does the nexus 4 have this problem or not? I am amazed that my 1.4ghz processor can run hd games but cant scroll a listview smoothly, which leads me to think theres something wrong with the s3.
Any feedback on the nexus 4's smoothness is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Jack
Same thing with nexus 4 scrolling within apps is jittery not smooth. But I think its an app issue because on some apps like currents it scrolls smoothly but on apps like xda it is not.

hmm thats sad to hear it happens on the nexus 4 too.
I thought it was just bad coding, but even in the play store, when I scroll down the homepage and images are loaded there is lag here as well.
For me it's really noticeable and not smooth, I can't believe iOS can perfect this with half the hardware resources but android cant.

So when you scroll the Facebook app at a fairly slow speed, do you notice no ever so slight glitches? Like its dropping frames? I notice this a lot on my s3.
OK first thing you have to understand. Not all androids are the same. How the OS interacts with the hardware is very different from one device to another. With android being still in its baby stages you will find lag from time to time no matter what device you use. Apple can control all aspects of the hardware and software so they will always have an advantage. You have to remember even the OS is not designed to take advantage of anything more then a dual core. Android has a long way to go still.
Wayne Tech Nexus
Ive been playing around, and if Ive found that the nexus 4 sets the min cpu frequency to 1026mhz when the screen is touched, and it appears my s3 only sets it to 800mhz. If i set my min frequency to 1.4ghz my scrolling is super smooth. I guess it's an s3 problem.
S3 is optimized to run the day to day routine tasks under 800 mhz. I installed android tuner and it kept reporting so about s3. Wasn't the case with my n4. N4 showed 1xx ghz or1.5 ghz... Somewhere between.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I've changed my CPU governor from pegasusq to interactive which appears to be using more power when doing things, which is giving me much better performance including scrolling. I was on the verge of selling my s3 and getting an n4 before I found this! Its fairly smooth now though.

[Q] Lag issues

Hi there I'm an owner of a 10 months used galaxy nexus and i've been thinking of buying a new phone as i kinda got bored of stock android and want something different.
I first narrowed my choices down to 2 devices which are considered at one of the best, HTC One, Galaxy S4. I continued searching and asking people about their experiences, and no i'm not an average user i hate lags i don't want them as much as anybody. At first i thought i could live with 4.7 inch screen on htc one for the absent of lags but i just don't think that way anymore.
I even think that 5 inches is small so i actually thought about buying note 3 but since it's a little bit more expensive than s4 in the country i live at, I might have to go for S4.
But my main concern is lag and i read that a lot of people were actually complaining about them. My nexus is rooted so my S4(if i buy one) will be rooted as well and i was wondering if there was actually a way(s) to eliminate all and any lag from that device since that is kinda the main reason i'm switching from GNEX.
Thanks.

Remove all bloatware and preinstalled apps u don't use etc etc ... since u were rooted u should know the drill to lighten the load ...
If you buy the i9505 u can also install stock android rom just as the i9505g(google edition) has
But if you want touchwiz or any of the samsung features, to my experience and we are talking about stock ... the i9500 seem to have fewer lagging issues ...
I bought my S4 to replace a nexus 4. Had the same boredom feeling about vanilla android experience so I ended up using this i9505. It's a great device IF you manage somehow to deal with lag and stutters all over the place (speaking of Tw stock roms ofc). I really can't understand why a hardware beast like this has to lag more than my very old S2. So, in terms of lag (that was your Q) you'll be disappointed... in all other terms it's still one of the best.

I considered the HTC one and nexus 4 also, but the S4 screen just looks stunning (even though the HTC's is supposedly better in direct sunlight). The screen looks huge (although its become normal to me now) and even though its not that much bigger than the HTC's, it still looks a lot bigger when side by side.
Its certainly not a slow device and is actually very smooth but you can definitely do plenty to improve things. As mentioned above, I removed a lot of bloat apps that I dont use/won't miss. I also started using greenify to hibernate apps running in the background. Another simple thing is change the animation speeds to 0.5x, I also do this on my nexus 7 as it makes it feel snappier as well (not that its slow). There are also the options of a lot of custom ROMs, some that are simply stock look with touchwiz, but tweaked/optimised for speed/battery life.
There is also the option of AOSP/CM/Google Edition ROMs if you want something leaner. Plus there are a couple of methods of dual booting if you want the best of both worlds. The speed and simplicity of stock android is great, but its also great to enjoy all of the bells and whistle features that Samsung added (that you paid for!).
So are those roms you mentioned that are based on touchwiz lag-free?

There will definitely be a lot less lag than the standard stock ROM, although you'd really need to test yourself to see how they perform for you. There's usually plenty of comments in the ROM threads on how people find them, so they're worth a read.

I'm currently on rooted stock also and it's great, if its laggy then its certainly not laggy enough for me to want to keep switching ROMs or even change phone. As much as people say how great sense is on the HTC one, it looks so dull and unfinished to me. And I know it's a real improvement as I've had htcs and seen it go from a rich ui to a bloated clunky mess. But you hand someone your s4 and you usually see how impressed they are with the stunning colourful display.

Yep, as always Nova is like butter, its a great launcher.
I dont want nova, ive used it with.many other skins and i just dont want to use it. I dont care if people get impressed by it, i want a phone that will keep me for at least a year and a half and i know note 3 seems a abetter solution but without lags, i can still be happy with s4 for a while. What about kernels? Franco kernel for gnex helps a lot as ive used it. What about s4?

graphics issues

Hey I just got my g2. Incredible phone, there is a learning curve however. I'm not quite used to the dimensions and button the back, but I have only been using it for a couple days so I'll give it t some time. The screen and camera are the best I've ever seen(not counting the nokia1020).
The biggest issue for me right now is performance. Switching in and out of apps and navigating apps is pretty choppy. Had this been 3 years ago the speed would be great but I'm comparing it to my galaxy s4 and iPhone 5 side by side and the scrolling on some web pages and apps is frustratingly slow. I was wondering if anyone is seeing the same kind of performance?
No, my phone is flying. No lags whatsoever. I would try a master reset and see if that helps.

Since your coming from anexus 4, which was my favorite android phone besides the camera. How are you doing with the size difference? I have larger than average size hands and I have to bounce the phone around in my hand to reach things I need to press at the top of the screen. Never had that problem with the nexus or my gs4.
I'm coming from a N4 too (I'll get the phone the G2 this week) I'll miss vanilla, but the battery life, camera, and larger screen will MORE than make up for that with the G2.
do me a favor and try youtube, asphalt 8, riptide gp, etc etc. (heavy 3d games) everything is choppy for me but the choppiness is rhythmic for some odd reason
First off, what launcher are you using? I think alot of people that get lagged that are caused by a poorly written app, and assume its the phones fault. Only good way to tell will be factory reset, and run it that way a bit. All good then add ur apps back one at a time, testing it between apps, and that will pinpoint which app is the issue...
I've been getting some random gitter/lag with the ui as well, just tested in antutu got 30,000 then a second time got 26,000. Isn't the g2 supposed to get like 35k?

Just so I could make a statement based on fact I downloaded Riptide GP 2 to see if I got any lag or stuttering, I played 2 races with no lag or slowdown. Then I went into the graphic settings but everything was already maxed out by default, I ended up playing for 20 more minutes and its a very fun game lol. So yep it just went thru the game like butter the way you would expect it to..
