I have the S4 and my MacBook has Mac OS X 10.8.4. When I plug my phone in with Kies open, it says connecting, but never actually connects. I have already uninstalled and reintalled Kies, uninstalled any other phones for my phone, a different USB cable, and enabled/disabled USB debugging.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

When I plug my phone into my usb port I keep getting an error message
That says
USB device not recognized
one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.
So when I do that it says unknown. I know I have the drivers installed because I can odin back to stock. I am thinking this is the reason why wired tether will not work.
Can anyone let me know what the problem may be?
Thanks.
This has happened to me from time to time. A reboot of the pc and phone has always fixed it.
I just realized I have never used this cable with the phone. I got it at walmart and it is made by fuse. So it could be the cable.
Also try a different usb port. Mine got error error messages on some ports but not the other on the same computer.
I bought several usb cables for cheap online. 1 totally stopped working, and another one disconnects the phone is I move the cable.
I always suspect the cable!
I am having the same problem with my laptop atm...
My computer can't seem to see the epic when it's in d/l mode. I've installed the samsung drivers as well...but no go.
Hopefully someone has a suggestion to fix the problem. I'll be seaching the forums in the meantime.
had the same problem try a different usb port aslo dont use usb multi hubs.
I have the same problems as well.
A reboot fixes nothing.
None of my ports work.
I do not want to replace my epic but this simple issue is nerve wrecking.
I have a similar problem. Both my wife and I have the epic. I have no issues connecting my phone to either of our computers but when I connect my wife's epic neither of the computer's see the phone at all (not even as an unrecognized device). The phone asks if I want to mount the sd card and I say yes and nothing happens. I've tried usb debugging and I can't get Odin to work either for hers (fine for mine). Has anyone else had this issue?
Thanks
So recently I noticed my PC can't connect to my phone for some reason, it used to work and it still charges it.
The note shows up as SAMSUNG_Android at Devices and Printers and it shows up as SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device and SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device.
I thought it could be the cable but it still charges my phone, although it looks like that the phone disconnects and reconnects really quickly when I play with it so it could be some connection problem.
I've read that it could be BC 1.1 (fast USB3 charging) but I tried both USB2 and USB3 and it still does this and it did work before.
I've tried removing the drivers and reconnecting it, reinstalling the drivers, disabling antivirus.
If you can help I'd appreciate it!
After installing a new kernel (to use GLTools) the USB started working again, the downside is I can't update the phone through kies (or do anything through kies), if you have a solution to the kies problem post here please.
I dont think this is an mtp driver issue but might be.
Icharge my phone using my laptop every night and I unfortunately had to get a new laptop and it has win8.1
Every time I connect my phone or my wife's s4 both have never been rooted it keeps cycling saying "connected as a media device" on the phone but the laptop says USB device unrecognized. Every once in a while it will actually say "Samsung 1337(or what ever it is) connected"
It keeps the laptop screen on, and the phones on and I fear it is causing an issue with the phone as it has been acting up lately.
I have done a factory reset, tried a different cable, updated the USB drives for the laptop, reinstalled the driver for the phone off Samsung's site, use debugging on and off no luck. Any other suggestions?

Hi!
I'm going out of my mind with this. I've tried everything in my knowledge to do.
So. I have the 32 gig version Samsung Galaxy Note 4 with the Snapdragon 805 processor. Wifi tethering on it works just fine but my desktop computer doesn't have wifi for now. If I use the built in usb tethering, EVERYTHING that has anything to do with my internet connections on Windows, freezes. It won't load Network and Sharing center let alone anything else regarding networking devices until I unplug the phone. I've tried using device manager to reinstall the device "Samsung NDIS internet sharing device" (or something), without solving the problem. I've tried using generic drivers, samsung drivers, I've uninstalled drivers using USBDEVIEW, I've reinstalled android drivers and samsungs own drivers, not solving the problem.
I tried using an app from the app store that uses usb tethering via USB Debugging and installing a 3rd party app on the computer that acts as a virtual networking device, but as soon as I connect the phone, the software on my Windows pc says "USB I/O Error" or something of such.
I'm going mad with this problem. What am I doing wrong?!
Oh...... my god. The frustration!
I plugged the damn thing on another usb port (which happens to be a USB 3.0 port, I don't know if that has anything to do with it), and now it works.
Why the hell does it have to be so random? Is there some way in Windows to just... RESET everything regarding usb ports and drivers and everything?
uuffffgghh
(sorry op for expressing myself)

I tried usb 2 it's working correctly
Hello all. I've got a problem with my N4 in that when I connect it to a PC via USB, the PC does not recognize any connection at all. It's not even saying "unknown device", just nothing. I've tried connecting it to multiple PC's (win 7, Win 8, Win 10) and with multiple USB cables, but I don't get anything. The only time I get something at all is if I turn on USB debugging on the N4. In this case, the PC recognised that a device has been connected, but doesn't seem to know what it is as it can't find the correct drivers to install.
This used to work fine on my Win7 machine, so I'm not sure what's changed. Anyone got any ideas what I can try to fix it?
Thanks for any help.
What I noticed before I replaced my USB port was that the port was worn out. It would charge/work with a brand new high quality cable, but wouldn't work right with an older cable.
As cables vary in quality and the data pins are different than the power pins, try cleaning the lint out of your USB port and try connecting with a brand new cable.
Just thinking out loud.
I am just going to toss this out there as one thing to check, as I know it affected me on Win8, and I think MS may have pushed out to the other versions if you did not revert the driver update yourself. http://www.eightforums.com/drivers-...usb-issue-since-last-windows-8-1-updates.html
Thanks for the link. that solved the problem. Once I set the connection to MTP. all PC's now recognise the device again. Many thanks!

Awesome, glad that worked for you. That URL is a godsend, and should be a sticky, because that USB situation will have you pulling your hair out.

Looks like the drivers in your PCs are not compatible. Get the correct drivers and try.
When some other drivers get installed, sometimes the existing drivers cease to work. I have faced this issue and solved it by installing correct drivers again.
You can also use NRT for this.
