[Q] hard bricked - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

today i accepted an OTA update,
i was previously root with an unlocked BL. i RDS lite back to facotry and i was unrooted, therefore thought it safe to
install update. the phone now wont turn on, no matter the combination of buttons.
i know it has a charge its been on the charger forever. no LED light of any kind, and plugging it by usb to PC has no results either.
im pretty sure i hard bricked this device.
at any rate i cant get a warranty for two reasons :
1. unlocked BL
2. denied replacement dude to crack in back glass..
so im a SOL?????

I havent heard of this procedure bricking anyone else, so maybe your phone just thinks the battery is dead. Team Black Hats factory adapter may fix this for you.

If it bricked because of the update, it's the provider's fault, so they should cover it. However, me thinks there is more to this story.
Sent from my Droid Razr M using xda app-developers app

Theres nothing more to the story.
It was on charge all night with the stock charger.. Nothing.
Phone was rooted I unrooted it. Boot loader still unlocked.
I accepted the ota and it won't do anything. I was denied a warranty replacement in store because the back glass has a crack.
Anyway the device is useless I bought an s4 today. And I'm selling the RAZR M to the highest bidder.

Cool story. Do I believe that an OTA, by itself, bricked your phone? Nope. Have fun with that S.

if u tried to update and it died, charging it after wont do anything. so i will ask what was ur battery at when u started?

I charge it all night before work. Got up for work and on the drive to work I accepted the ota so the battery was probably at a good 97%
Im still trying to understand what happened lol

I came here to ask for help on how to revive the phone. I didn't ask for an opinion. What I provided is a 100% accurate account of what led to my phone being bricked. In the hopes someone could give me and idea of what to do. I really could careless about your opinion of "what you believe". If you can't help then don't come here and attack me. Thanks.

Have you tried holding down on the power, volume up and volume down buttons at the same time for about 3 secs?

There's no attacking. Before we even had chance to help you, you scrapped the phone and went and bought another one. When you originally posted, you didn't give any details to help us out. Personally, I don't believe only the OTA would cause a brick, but as we all know, no one cares what I think.
If your battery is good, you should be able to get into your recovery menu and restore your backup. If you can't do that, you might try to get into the fastboot menu and fastboot back to stock. If you hold the power button, volume down, and volume up at that same time, you should be able to get into the fastboot menu. When in the menu, scroll down with vol- button and choose your choice by hitting the vol+ button. If you can't get the phone to boot into FB, then you are probably stuck. However, if you can get into recovery and/or fastboot, you don't have a brick.

edit: I started a pissing match, so I'll end it.
As much as I enjoy being "smarmy", I'll try to ease up so I don't hurt some kids feelings.

Dear rikrong.
First. Please read I supplied every detail I can absolutely express about my phone and what happened.
Second I do important business and there's no point in tying up time in waiting for a fix to my phone when I can get a new one. Why waste the time when I was expecting a customer to call about a $5000 job?
I'm not "some kid" and unlike you I have business to do and don't have time to troll on a forum for people seeking help with their devices. Hold your tongue and don't pass judgment on someone you don't know.
And don't worry about hurting my feelings. I GUARANTEE you don't have the mental capacity to offend me, friend.
I would like to revive the device and donate it to a family member or friend who could make better use of it than I.
To wrap this up, no button combos or ANYTHING will turn the device on, it literally is a brick, I heard of JTAG and this may be the route I will take..

Well, that's nice, you tell me not to attack you and you come right back at me. I tried to tie it up in my last post and offer some help, but I guess you didn't get it. If you think I'm trolling, you need to put on your big girl panties and take a look at the other forums that aren't super newb friendly like these tech forums. I tried to offer peace, but you came right back at me. I also have plenty of of business to take care of every day. It just so happens that I like to come to these forums when I'm at home and finished busting my knuckles at work.
I tried to offer some help, after realizing how I did come off as an ass in my original post, but you fired right back at me. So,have fun.

I stand my my recommendation in post #2. It doesnt make sense that this procedure would brick your phone so my feeling is that its not bricked. I had a similar experience with my D2G back in day. For $10 team black hats factory adapter is worth a shot. Even if you stick with the S fixing your XT907 will fetch you more money on the market.

First things to do to a new Nexus One

Hi all,
Just picking up my new unlocked Nexus One this week. Cant wait.
In your opinion what are they "must do" things that need to doen straight away with this device to improve performance, add feature, optimise etc
Cheers
Chumby
Hmm... I'd say SEARCH. Cuz it's been asked before.
Brick it! There haven't been enough bricks yet for us to end up with any threads on "There must be a way to unbrick it, stop holding out and fix it you guys that broke my phone!" Those are always a good time!
For real, though... if you keep it stock you will be happy... check out Swype, it is amazing keyboard! Also take a look at the Live Earth Rotation wallpaper, is it my favorite!
I would also say unlock and root and flash a Cyan, then a Desire, then Enom's, then pick which one you liked the most, and rock that for a couple days, then flash again!
Hi there,
Yea have been searching but cant seem to find anything specific.... about the BEST things to do straight away.
Can you remember the name of the thread?
Cheers
Chumby
fap perhaps? It's a large screen you know.
Thanks for that
Ok... thanks for the advice here... will check out the apps mentioned and then the various Roms...

Also searched for swype and checked a few other postings... this keboard looks nice.... does it work as good as they say on the N1?

No
everyone on the internet lied
First thing to do would be to unlock the bootloader! This opens tons of possibilities!

hahaha thats just mean
Root it and unlock bootloader....after that, start having fun flashing all the roms.
Ya def root it then put on cyanogenmod. Don't know how I lived without for the past few days. World of difference.
First, charge put hte battery in and don't turn on phone, charge battery up all the way until its turns green light, then wait another two hours then power it on, then don't plug it in to computer or adapter and let battery drain until phone auto shuts off this will calibrate the battery to last the longest. Next don't unlock/root it right away play around with it for a week make sure everything is right with the phone no defects etc, because one you root/unlock it you void your warranty. After that its all up to you!
Make sure the phone works well and there are no defects, give it 2 weeks to a month before unlocking the bootloader...
1st buy this ASAP :

[Q] 100% Bricked

I'm pretty sure my Droid X is completely dead. I've been running Liberty 1.5 for a few weeks now with no problem. I hadn't done anything new since flashing Liberty; no flashing, rooting, nothing.
So it came as a huge surprise when I plugged my phone into a charger and everything went black. I can't turn it on, I can't enter recovery, I can't even enter the bootloader. I've tried leaving the phone on the factory charger for a few hours (nothing), I've tried leaving the battery out for a few hours (nothing).
Is my phone a paperweight?
Is the charger defective? Is your battery defective? I.E it is completely dead and wont charge or charger isn't outputting and DC voltage?

Do you know anyone else with a Droid X? Your battery may have just completely died. Try another battery for the X, or even go into a Verizon store and see if they can give you a battery just to confirm if it is a battery issue or not.
The phone "shouldn't" just die if you haven't done anything to it...while there are extreme cases with weird occurances, the phone shouldn't just magically stop working.

I'll try a different battery when I get a chance.
I was hoping it really didn't just magically die, that would be horrible. But the battery seems like an odd problem since it was at 30% when I plugged it in.
Well, my phone was dead. I took it to verizon where they tried a brand new battery and it still didn't do anything. The clerk even put my battery in another droid x and it started up fine.
So, on to the next droid x, which hopefully won't magically die on me.
Sounds like you had some kind of hardware failure, in my opinion. Quite unfortunate.
Dear friend,
I obviously have a Droid x also. I've got some good news for you. This happened to me before (although at that time, the phone was not rooted, but I don't think it has anything to do with it) I took the phone to Verizon and what they said is that the battery had completely died. They put a different battery and the phone worked just fine.
Good luck!

Got sand in your pants?
It's the man's second post, he was trying to be helpful, and you're already trolling him.
Try something like this instead: "As noted in a post above, Verizon was able to rule out the battery as the cause of the failure. Please try to check if a thread is already resolved, before bumping it again".
/Manners are free; as are cliches.
No sand here....perhaps a bit where you're sittin Blade?
Just havin a little fun while communicating the same thing. I'll try to keep it humorless and terse as in your example.

First of all, like bladebarrier(thanks to him by the way) said, I was just trying to help, because I know how it sucks when you think your phone is bricked. Second, yesterday was my first time using the xda app (I'm new to the site and forums in general), I didn't pay much attention that the question was already answered, although I should have.
I can't find anything wrong with saying "dear friend" or "good luck", it doesn't hurt to be polite or friendly. May be these words fits better in a letter than in a forum, but I'm still learning a new thing everyday because English is not my first language.
With all due respect, you remind me of the majority of people who comment on Yahoo news, they always have an attitude.
Thank you.

Several people had theirs replaced for free so as long as you don't get a **** of a tech....
For those that are on the beta Bonsai 4.1.0b9 the 2 quickest ways to get back to 4.0.1 is to flash 4.0.1 then run one click root Clockwork Mod 3.0.0.6 since it does not play nice with the imbedded 3.0.2.4 from 4.1.0 or you can Odin EB13 prerooted with CWM 3.0.0.6 then after converting to EXT 4 restore a nandroid of 4.0.1. Reflash 4.0.1 after that to disable journaling. Then Odin the EC05 modem.
EB13 link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
One click root CWM 3.0.0.6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
If anyone needs Odin let me know.
charge the battery for an hour or so. then try to get into download mode again. if you can, stop and charge the battery to full. if you can't, it may actually be bricked. download mode uses alot of juice, and you can think you're bricked when you really just have a dead battery.

One of the guys with the bricked phones had extra batteries charged, and no go. Another just came back from the Sprint store and they ordered him another phone after trying to revive it for 2 hours. Whatever this is, it is really bricking the phones. It could be CWM 3.0.2.4 related since that was imbedded in the ROM.

I didn't take it seriously until the 4th bricked phone. I even tried to convince myself that I would be safe with the Genocide kernel on it. But then common sense took over and I went back to 4.0.1 and passed the word here.
After taking my brick in and they worked with it for a couple of hours they said they would replace it no questions asked. When I first went in I told them I took it off the charger and it wouldn't turn on. Nothing they could do would get it running.
None in stock so I wait until tomorrow or the next day.

And they don't eat the phones. They get refurbed and given to the next insurance claim.
They shouldn't be, but things like this is exactly the ammunition they need to lock down the bootloader, up insurance cost, etc. . .
I am not sure why anyone would think it would be okay to rob a bank and then tell everyone about it, but people seem to think posting in a public forum is some how annomymous.
No I am not saying anyone is going to get in trouble, but a simple google search pulls this stuff up.

Really? You are on the side of the insurance company? The same one that gets $7 a month from most people and then instead of giving people a new phone immediately makes them wait for a refurbed one, a couple of days. The same insurance that makes you wait a couple of days to get your keyboard fixed instead of giving you another phone. Believe me they are not losing any money. Don't cry for them.

Indeed, they are not losing anything. In fact, the insurance industry is the only field that hires more mathematicians than NASA. They make sure that no matter what, prices and deductibles are set so they profit. It's one of the longest going scams in history. I have TEP on 5 lines. So I don't feel bad when someone gets their money's worth.

Banks are insured too. So should we say the same thing when they're robbed? Hell, let's not even go after the people who robbed it because they're insured right?
Somebody has to eat the cost any time a claim is made. And unfortunately, it's the consumer. TEP used to be $5 a month. Nobody is forced to have insurance on their phone. And nobody is forced to load custom ROMs either. Don't try to justify the risk you took by thinking you're entitled to a claim any time you want it.
Auto insurance companies deny claims all the time because of negligence. Why should we all pay when someone is doing 150mph down the freeway? It's the same concept here.
Ok bonsai fans, please stop talking about getting phones replaced. We are starting to attract all the party poopers and well they are going to poop on your party(in a ****ty arnold voice)

Just take it into a Sprint store. They will help you. Why haven't you called them yet? Of course they're going to verify that you own it, so if that's an issue, GOOD LUCK.....of course you should turn it in to sprint so they can return it to its owner.
Seems a little odd that a Sprint customer having such an issue with their phone wouldn't have tried them first. You have 2 posts, so one could deduce that you don't follow the forum.

I had someone once who couldn't 'remember' "their" laptops boot password, and based on the fact they had to ask, I didn't think for one second about not mentioning that wiping the bios would do it. The story then changed to 'oh I just bought it from a pawn shop', but having dealt with pawn shops before, one would already know that they're not going to take in a machine with even the OS password'd, let alone the BOOT!

Ha, NOT locking your phone makes you end up like this guy! If you have a lock, no matter how talented of a drunk one may be, they're not getting past your 'lock'.
Now an unlocked phone can have one put onto it, as stated by the OP
You might as well just reset the wipe the phone. That is exactly what Sprint will tell you to do. Or try to request your gmail password.

Keep in mind that this attempts to unlock the bootloader on S3 locked bootloaders. It said successful for my phone, so I turned it off. And no sign of life AT ALL. Can't boot into download mode or recovery mode. I really need help guys :crying:

Hooo...oh boy...okay see what you did here, is the one thing you don't do. You know how people say "if theres one thing not to do..."? Well you did it. Not trying to be mean, please don't misunderstand. Just trying to convey the gravity of the mistake.
In all likelihood, it's a paperweight now. Might as well gut it for the parts. As far as I know, there is no coming back from that, at least none that would be cost-effective or even mildly user-friendly.
However, when I screwed my GalaxyS3 as such, I was able to bring it back by booting into a rom on my external sd, but I don't believe the S4's have that functionality. Your best bet, search far and wide for "S4 hardbrick"...but don't hold your breath. We live and we learn.

I guess that's a dead boot. I don't think you can fix this yourself.
You can Google "S4 dead boot" and I think you might find some stuff about it.

Yeah I saw this video, but the guy only had S3 and S5 debrick images. I'm looking for one right now. And yes I have searched that already. Thank you!

So the device is completely unresponsive from the powered-down state? Try pluggin' it in as-is to a Windows Desktop (or laptop) and see what bubbles popup. If nothing happens...yeah, my sympathies. But if the PC at least notices it, that would mean you're probably in QDL mode, and there may yet be hope. (QDL = Qualcomm Download)

Yeah I guess it's done... I was on 5.0.1 so I have the OF1 version, but the only debrick image for my model number is for the NK1 version. And yes it is completely unresponive. My PC doesn't recognize it at all. Thanks for helping guys. This sucks though

Is the LCD assembly intact? PM me a figure and I may buy it off you lol. My SCH-I545 SGS4 took a tumble and obliterated the screen...this would be my second LCD replacement on it...debating on whether to just let it die or not.

Well I'll have to find a screwdriver lol but I mean I have never dropped it, because I literally just got this not too long ago maybe like less than a week ago since I broke my iPhone.

Also I don't know if this means anything, but I have this charging station with USB ports, and a LED showing if it is charging or not, and it lights up when my S4 is plugged in. Does it mean anything?
Would a USB Jig perhaps bump it into download mode? Or is that all part of the bootloader? If the bootloader is dead I think the whole lot is scrap.

Any sign of life from the screen upon doing so? Perhaps, but don't hold your breath or anything. Remember, hope for best but prepare for worst. I'm currently investigating, so stay tuned.

Ya know, I was thinking the same. As said above, currently investigating so I can help suggest where to go from here.

No, there is nothing on the screen no matter what, and yeah I thought of a jig cable, but I've tried to go into download mode before, and there was nothing. And the buttons do work.
