EZ-Unlock Hardbrick [GALAXY S4 | SCH-I545] - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 rooted, and I heard about this app maybe an hour ago. So I tried it, and it was supposed to be only for S3 I guess. Keep in mind that this attempts to unlock the bootloader on S3 locked bootloaders. It said successful for my phone, so I turned it off. And no sign of life AT ALL. Can't boot into download mode or recovery mode. I really need help guys :crying:

Hooo...oh boy...okay see what you did here, is the one thing you don't do. You know how people say "if theres one thing not to do..."? Well you did it. Not trying to be mean, please don't misunderstand. Just trying to convey the gravity of the mistake.
In all likelihood, it's a paperweight now. Might as well gut it for the parts. As far as I know, there is no coming back from that, at least none that would be cost-effective or even mildly user-friendly.
However, when I screwed my GalaxyS3 as such, I was able to bring it back by booting into a rom on my external sd, but I don't believe the S4's have that functionality. Your best bet, search far and wide for "S4 hardbrick"...but don't hold your breath. We live and we learn.

I guess that's a dead boot. I don't think you can fix this yourself.
You can Google "S4 dead boot" and I think you might find some stuff about it.

Yeah I saw this video, but the guy only had S3 and S5 debrick images. I'm looking for one right now. And yes I have searched that already. Thank you!

So the device is completely unresponsive from the powered-down state? Try pluggin' it in as-is to a Windows Desktop (or laptop) and see what bubbles popup. If nothing happens...yeah, my sympathies. But if the PC at least notices it, that would mean you're probably in QDL mode, and there may yet be hope. (QDL = Qualcomm Download)

Yeah I guess it's done... I was on 5.0.1 so I have the OF1 version, but the only debrick image for my model number is for the NK1 version. And yes it is completely unresponive. My PC doesn't recognize it at all. Thanks for helping guys. This sucks though

Is the LCD assembly intact? PM me a figure and I may buy it off you lol. My SCH-I545 SGS4 took a tumble and obliterated the screen...this would be my second LCD replacement on it...debating on whether to just let it die or not.

Well I'll have to find a screwdriver lol but I mean I have never dropped it, because I literally just got this not too long ago maybe like less than a week ago since I broke my iPhone.

Also I don't know if this means anything, but I have this charging station with USB ports, and a LED showing if it is charging or not, and it lights up when my S4 is plugged in. Does it mean anything?

Would a USB Jig perhaps bump it into download mode? Or is that all part of the bootloader? If the bootloader is dead I think the whole lot is scrap.

Any sign of life from the screen upon doing so? Perhaps, but don't hold your breath or anything. Remember, hope for best but prepare for worst. I'm currently investigating, so stay tuned.

Ya know, I was thinking the same. As said above, currently investigating so I can help suggest where to go from here.

No, there is nothing on the screen no matter what, and yeah I thought of a jig cable, but I've tried to go into download mode before, and there was nothing. And the buttons do work.

[Q] Device (hard) bricked?

I wanted to flash another rom version on my LG Optimus 7 with an official rom that was posted in the LG topic. During the process (before the actual flashing I think) I got an error. My device was still turned on at that moment and in Emergency Download mode. I thought that since the flashing didn't really start I could reboot my device and try it another time cause it was late but my phone wont turn on no matter what I do. I cant enter emergency download mode, nothing.
So is it possible that my device is now completely dead? It seems so hard to believe.
How low was your battery?
Take out your battery. Leave it out for a minute and then put it back in. Connect your phone to the power-adapter and let it charge for at least 5 minutes. Then try to switch on your phone.

Battery wasnt really low, the phone was still on when I got the error. Can't say exactly how full it was cause it was in emergency mode for a while but it never turned off.

Hmm. That doesn't look good. Did you try key-combo's again after you took out the battery? You might get it into downloadmode now.
I made a jig for my Samsung. With the jig I can get a phone into downloadmode even when it is bricked. Maybe there's something like that for LG's.
Good luck!

I'm afraid it only works for Samsung brand. You might want to consider RMA.
Please do not post device specific problems here in the WP7 dev forums!
~~Tito~~
Hello,
i´m new here and i know that i dig a old post out of the grave, but before christmas my boss get 3 LG E900´s for his kid´s and 2 of them where selled in demo modes.
Not official, but because it was early too christmas he ask if i have an idea.
So i read many hours in much forums (even here) how to flash.
The first one was not a big problem at my home pc(took a lil time if it´s start in emerg.-mode, but now it works perfect)
So i tried the same with the second one at my office pc, because this one arrives us at 23. dec. and i do the same steps as i do at home.
But while flashing i got a massage from the LGDP2_V36_UMTS prog. that there was an abort.
EM still worked, so i tried again (4 times) with an other abort (RAM error)
After the 5. try with this error i do same as before and shut it off.
I wanted to try it at home again, but since this i couldn´t it on.
Everthing i tried doesn´t work. Screen keeps black.
Anyone an idea?
PS: sorry if my english is bad, i´m german.

I think my focus may be completely bricked, no logo, no vibration, no pc detection.

To start I am new to the Samsung Focus and the Windows Phone 7 modding scene. The only background I have is with Android and the Samsung Fascinate.
I have been battling with this focus for a few days.
When I first got it it would not start up at all, only bootloop at the Samsung logo.
I then figured out that the phone would boot up if I removed the SD card. I know for a fact that was the SD card that came with and has been in the phone until now.
The phone when connected to pc or the wall would seem to not charge batteries. I have 3 working 1500 mAh batteries between my fascinate and this focus and the focus would not charge any of them.
Then I flashed MAGLDR, or at least tried to. It failed the first time during installation, and worked the second time.
I then attempted to flash cleanrom 3.10a. The installation program said it had completed sucessfully, but alas I only got a bootloop.
Then I flashed 1.3 stock rom sucessfully, but still a bootloop.
I just tried to flash the 1.4 stock rom to maybe kick it out of bootloop, and during the PDA flashing the phone got stuck at 13%. Unlucky number, eh?
After 15 or so minutes I decided to unplug the phone and pull the battery.
Uh-oh.
Now, with 2 different batteries, which I know are charged, the phone will not boot into the logo, download mode, or format mode. Pressing the power button does nothing. The screen remains black, and plugging the phone in after holding the download mode buttons does nothing, my pc does not recognize any usb device being plugged in.
Now I am completely stuck. Is it a paperweight or can I still save it?

Are you saying you have a Version 1.3 Focus and you flashed the Version 1.4 stock ROM? If you did, then yes, you now have a bricked Focus, and I don't believe anyone has found a way to repair that. NEVER flash ver 1.4 ROM to a ver 1.3 phone, or vice versa. Sorry about your troubles...

Yes I guess I did. There was no place that I could find that ever stated the difference between 1.3 and 1.4. I saw something online about being able to recover it with a JTAG service (sending it out to someone with a RIFF box and have them jtag it back to download mode) would that even be possible?

For starters, please don't take my previous message as scolding you for flashing the wrong ROM. Believe me, it happens to all of us at some point. I did it to an HD2 and bricked it.
I don't remember anyone recovering it with JTAG, but if there is a way, I'm sure that's it. I would suggest you follow up in the thread where you read that and see if anyone there can confirm they have done it successfully. Good luck, and again, I'm sorry about your phone.

I only found one website that seemed legitimate (he had youtube videos with 40,000 ish views) and honest. He explained that the JTAG method could fix dead-boot phones like mine, and if not then the price is refunded. It's only $40 for the service, but I'm a poor high school student. Once I get the money I will definitely follow up in this thread. :good:

Be cautious of those sites, and get references. There are many sites that "Say" they will do something and if it does not work, they will refund your money. But when you don't hear back, you've lost your money, and possibly phone. It's really hard to get a refund at that point.
There are MANY iPhone Unlock Sites that do nothing more than take your money, never to be heard from again. They look legitimate, but it's really hard to tell from a web site that can be built in an hour or so.

Duly noted. I will definitely do my research. Also I will probably go to a site that uses paypal so I can take advantage of their buyer protection policies.
I would consider getting a phone off of ebay with a cracked screen and strip out the main board, put it in your phone.
Make sure you flash with the correct firmware.

JTAG Help?

I've got my RIFFbox, and I've been able to connect to the device just fine. I can send the resurrection to the dead body, but I can't get it to boot to Odin mode still. When connecting to PC, it still shows the QPST download mode (QDL mode). I'm currently trying to flash individual partitions to the device.
Any help or suggestions to get this thing out of QPST mode? :/
Thanks!
I've tried 301k & 619k JIGs also, and several known combinations of keys to boot Odin mode.
UPDATE [7-23-13]:
At this time, I've determined that this device is permanently bricked until I can get my hands on the Kies MF3 Odin package and manually load these files via JTAG. However, even this is not guaranteed to fix it. For the time being, I've replaced the device. I'll hold onto the carcass for a little while longer to see if I can get MF3 to boot on it. If I can, I will use this as a test bed for developers to attempt to unlock bootloaders or develop an MF3 root. Otherwise, I eventually plan to part it out, selling things like the screen, etc.

Currently flashing the whole 1GB image. Takes forever, so I will let you all know how it goes in a couple hours. I haven't tried flashing the whole MF3 boot chain but it's looking like that's what I will end up needing to try.

No go on the full 1GB flash. In a last-ditch effort, I threw the MF3 version of SBL2, SBL3, ABOOT, TZ, and RPM at it.
Still boots to QHUSB_DLOAD mode.
This is unbelievably frustrating. No matter what I throw at this thing, it refuses to boot. Also, it seems that the only people that know how to JTAG one of these things are not responding.
Try getting a hold of Josh over at mobile tech videos. I believe he goes by connexion2005 here on XDA.

Have you tried contacting @AdamOutler? If I remember from the early Captivate days he worked with Josh to get the JTAG stuff working. He's definitely very knowledgeable when it comes to Samsung hardware.
I'm pretty sure you need a JTAG flash with an up to date firmware. There was someone else who's device refused to boot and he managed to unbrick with software. I take it that this is due to messing with bootloaders and trying to revert? btw... quote or mention usually gets my attention.

Yes, this is from flashing MF3 Sbl2 and Sbl3 (without aboot and tz). I've tried flashing the whole MF3 bootchain, and it still doesn't like it. Still boots to QPST mode.
EDIT/ADD:
At this point, I've flashed these:
PGPT (and SGPT) from the 1GB "full dump" provided by riffbox (assuming MDB or MDL - it was released 7/3/13)
PIT from the forums around here somewhere (seems identical to one from dump)
MD5 from dump
(empty area) from dump
apnhlos (aka non-hlos) from MF3
MDM from MF3
sbl1 from AdamOutler's MDB dump
sbl2 from MF3
sbl3 from MF3
aboot from MF3
rpm from MF3
tz from MF3
Yeah, tried it all again, for good measure. Starting to wonder if this thing is completely and utterly bricked? It makes no logical sense. Something is still triggering it to enter QPST mode. Again, I've tried using 301k (and a few other) Ohm resistance JIGs to try booting immediately the flash. Nada. Using the 4.2v power supply from the Riffbox, tried USB power (kinda difficult to flash things solderless when the daughterboard is attached, but possible), tried battery power only... All appear to work fine in Riff, all allow me to read and write any address I want.
I'm about to the point where I'm going to scrap this for parts to help get a new one. :/

I've been a diehard Samsung supporter since the GS1 came out. The hardware quality is awesome. Unfortunately, their policies are beginning to become unfriendly for developers. The issue you're having is due 100% to Samsung's desire to lock people out of custom kernels.
Isn't it AT&T and VZW who are locking it?

I got the latest firmware that I could find - but it's dated 7-3-13 (a week before the MF3 patch). Does Kies have MF3 yet? I might be able to live with MF3 if I were able to retain a custom recovery and therefore root (via injection). It'd mean no custom ROMs until a new "Loki" (or equivalent) is made, or we get these blasted bootloaders unlocked.

I would REALLY like to hear what the deal was with mobiletechvideos.com & @connexion2005 has to say about our situation here. My plan was to cut my losses on Monday if I am not able to get it fixed this weekend. This is really crazy news for me - Josh is indeed the most reputable JTAG guy in the industry (afaik). For them to send that back still bricked is a really bad sign! (Makes my situation look pretty much hopeless!)

Indeed, I've had the Infuse, S2, and now the S4. I love Samsung's handsets, and I traditionally loved how much modification you could do to these handsets to customize them. However, with locked bootloaders and such, this is becoming quite the joke - and the joke's on us, it seems.

As an update to my situation, I haven't tried anything new since my last post. Still waiting to find new ideas or hear some suggestions.

just got my device back today and its still Bricked !?!?!?!? either josh and his guys just failed to test it or there is no way to fix these phones
1. this really pisses me off i sent it to the most reputable guy in the buisness and got it back in this condition.
2. for the odd case that its just a complete loss i have one thing to say to samsung, vzw, att....
basically moral of the story is i wouldnt sell your phone for parts to get another wait until i/we hear back from mobiletechvideo then sell you device and never buy a samsung device again as long as it is locked

I screwed up my S4 recently and it was being fixed (hopefully) from MobileTechVideos. Josh is really a good guy and back in my S1 Cappy days I had to send one to him. We chatted on the phone about android stuff quite a bit back then.
So I screwed up the kernel I believe trying to make a kernel splash screen, flashed in recovery and when it rebooted I just got a vibration every 3-5 seconds. Tried Odin MDB and MDL firmware with both always passing. But still same results when it went to reboot.
Now seeing this comment you made has me actually worried now. Have you contacted them about it still being bricked yet? Or did they send it back with refunding the charges since it wouldn't work? Crap it I f'ed it over after only 1 week of having it and it cannot be resurrected. Now I know my situation is different as I have NOT messed with anything from MF3 at all. But if something else is going on inside that MobileTechVideos couldn't fix has me worried.
Also @Adam, I feel the same way about the quality of the Galaxy lines as I have had the S1,S2, S3, and now S4. But I am seeing the writing on the wall with Samsung and ATT showing me this COULD BE my last of them.

[Q] hard bricked

today i accepted an OTA update,
i was previously root with an unlocked BL. i RDS lite back to facotry and i was unrooted, therefore thought it safe to
install update. the phone now wont turn on, no matter the combination of buttons.
i know it has a charge its been on the charger forever. no LED light of any kind, and plugging it by usb to PC has no results either.
im pretty sure i hard bricked this device.
at any rate i cant get a warranty for two reasons :
1. unlocked BL
2. denied replacement dude to crack in back glass..
so im a SOL?????
I havent heard of this procedure bricking anyone else, so maybe your phone just thinks the battery is dead. Team Black Hats factory adapter may fix this for you.
If it bricked because of the update, it's the provider's fault, so they should cover it. However, me thinks there is more to this story.

Theres nothing more to the story.
It was on charge all night with the stock charger.. Nothing.
Phone was rooted I unrooted it. Boot loader still unlocked.
I accepted the ota and it won't do anything. I was denied a warranty replacement in store because the back glass has a crack.
Anyway the device is useless I bought an s4 today. And I'm selling the RAZR M to the highest bidder.

Cool story. Do I believe that an OTA, by itself, bricked your phone? Nope. Have fun with that S.
if u tried to update and it died, charging it after wont do anything. so i will ask what was ur battery at when u started?

I charge it all night before work. Got up for work and on the drive to work I accepted the ota so the battery was probably at a good 97%
Im still trying to understand what happened lol

I came here to ask for help on how to revive the phone. I didn't ask for an opinion. What I provided is a 100% accurate account of what led to my phone being bricked. In the hopes someone could give me and idea of what to do. I really could careless about your opinion of "what you believe". If you can't help then don't come here and attack me. Thanks.

Have you tried holding down on the power, volume up and volume down buttons at the same time for about 3 secs?

There's no attacking. Before we even had chance to help you, you scrapped the phone and went and bought another one. When you originally posted, you didn't give any details to help us out. Personally, I don't believe only the OTA would cause a brick, but as we all know, no one cares what I think.
If your battery is good, you should be able to get into your recovery menu and restore your backup. If you can't do that, you might try to get into the fastboot menu and fastboot back to stock. If you hold the power button, volume down, and volume up at that same time, you should be able to get into the fastboot menu. When in the menu, scroll down with vol- button and choose your choice by hitting the vol+ button. If you can't get the phone to boot into FB, then you are probably stuck. However, if you can get into recovery and/or fastboot, you don't have a brick.

edit: I started a pissing match, so I'll end it.
As much as I enjoy being "smarmy", I'll try to ease up so I don't hurt some kids feelings.
Dear rikrong.
First. Please read I supplied every detail I can absolutely express about my phone and what happened.
Second I do important business and there's no point in tying up time in waiting for a fix to my phone when I can get a new one. Why waste the time when I was expecting a customer to call about a $5000 job?
I'm not "some kid" and unlike you I have business to do and don't have time to troll on a forum for people seeking help with their devices. Hold your tongue and don't pass judgment on someone you don't know.
And don't worry about hurting my feelings. I GUARANTEE you don't have the mental capacity to offend me, friend.
I would like to revive the device and donate it to a family member or friend who could make better use of it than I.
To wrap this up, no button combos or ANYTHING will turn the device on, it literally is a brick, I heard of JTAG and this may be the route I will take..

Well, that's nice, you tell me not to attack you and you come right back at me. I tried to tie it up in my last post and offer some help, but I guess you didn't get it. If you think I'm trolling, you need to put on your big girl panties and take a look at the other forums that aren't super newb friendly like these tech forums. I tried to offer peace, but you came right back at me. I also have plenty of of business to take care of every day. It just so happens that I like to come to these forums when I'm at home and finished busting my knuckles at work.
I tried to offer some help, after realizing how I did come off as an ass in my original post, but you fired right back at me. So,have fun.
I stand my my recommendation in post #2. It doesnt make sense that this procedure would brick your phone so my feeling is that its not bricked. I had a similar experience with my D2G back in day. For $10 team black hats factory adapter is worth a shot. Even if you stick with the S fixing your XT907 will fetch you more money on the market.

Wont boot up after ODIN T-Flash

So I need help. I tried un rooting my s7 edge by flashing the stock files in ODIN, I selected T-Flash in ODIN options because that's what I remembered selecting in the past. Little did I know I forgot to select Re-Partition too. Now my phone shows a black screen, I cant boot into recovery or download mode, but it would seem like the phone isn't shutting off because when I connect it to my PC its immediately recognized and no matter how many button combinations I try it just is disconnected from the PC for about half a second and then re connects. I don't get any response from the phone though. The screen is pitch black and i cant get it to do anything. After flashing I noticed it wasn't booting up at all it was in download mode and when it finished the screen turned black and never came back on. When connected to my PC it is recognized as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM5) in my device manager ODIN Does not recognize it and neither does any other application. Can I please get some help here?
Try pressing and holding the power button until the device shuts off. It could take up to a minute of holding the button down continuously.

Yeah that does nothing. I'm still stuck on the black screen and nothing is happening. I'm about to just sit in a corner and cry. No matter what I try nothing comes on no LED no display no vibrations, all I get is the connection sound on my computer when I connect it that is it it does nothing else.

Try recovery mode:
Hold Vol+, Home, and then Power
From there you should be able to wipe or boot to download mode. Hopefully...

I really hate giving links to outside sources when I don't know anything about it but this seems to be your only hope unless you can bring it to a store and have them swap it out with a new one.

I read through it some, looks complicated. You don't have to follow the guide. The easiest thing you could do is bring it to where you purchased it and then get it swapped for a new one.

Well like I said before, I don't like giving out directions like I did if I don't recognize the steps to complete it or if others have not supported the validity of it. I don't want to stray you in the wrong direction. The only thing I think you should do, my opinion of course, is attempt to return it under or try to get it repaired under warranty as you don't need insurance as long as you didn't trip Knox, which I don't believe you did.

Okay so i called Samsung and they let me send it in for repair, I'm shipping it out tomorrow. All they asked for was a email my address name and they gave me this code or whatever. I thought I would need like a receipt or something but I guess not. I bought the phone used from Swappa so I thought i'd be screwed. I just hope Knox inst messed up which it shouldn't be because it never was and it failed when I was trying to flash stock firmware. Oh and its free of charge since it hasn't been a year of the phones release yet.

Glad you could get it sorted out. Sucks that it will take a little longer but it's better than attempting to follow complicated tutorials that may not even work and may make the problem worse. Hope they send you a new one, just be careful next time you flash anything. Read the instructions, make sure you understand them and ask about what you don't, then read through again to double check and you shouldn't have any problems.

The only thing I'm worried about is if they call me saying they won't repair it because I have no proof of purchase since I bought it used. I'm so anxious to get my phone back really hoping everything is smooth. It's apparently covered by the 1yr warranty every phone comes with but why would they not ask for a receipt but whatever I just want everything to go smooth.

The Samsung S7's came out in March of this year, so regardless of when you have bought it at this time it's obviously still within the warranty period.

Oh okay. And what about not having a proof of purchase. Does it even matter for this kind of warranty?

Once the phone has been out over a year where it's not a guarantee that you must have purchased it within the last 12 months then yes, they most likely would ask for a receipt. You're just lucky like that. Lol

Oh wow so its basically just lucky timing, nice. I'm never rooting the phone again all i wanted were better emojis and the note 7 UX and I couldn't even get the Note 7 UX so its not worth it. It's an amazing phone on it's own. I won't ever try and root another Verizon phone there's always little support cause of the bootloader and I always run into something. Glad I dont have to worry much just takes time.
