I'm really digging the phablet UI this time around. It doesn't seem as limited as on the old N7. That's not to say that I'll keep it once custom ROMs come out

If you are rooted, you can manually edit the build.prop file, change the line
Code:
ro.sf.lcd_density=320
to
ro.sf.lcd_density=240

Thats 'tablet mode', 'tablet ui' is an aokp thing. Where notification bar is on bottom panel and soft buttons moved to bottom left which I presume what everybody is wanting.

Yes, exactly. There was a nice tablet UI set up for the old Nexus where the notification bar and the buttons were moved plus the addition of battery percentage display and a new reboot/restart menu option. Hopefully, one of the developer will get to it soon.

can you explain the difference between tablet ui and tablet mode? you are describing details, that were part of android originally before jellybean was released. seems like you are trying to give credit to aokp?
Anyone working on a patch? I am looking for a patch that will provide tablet UI independent of lcd density setting.
On the original Nexus 7, this patch worked well

I am hoping to see something similar for the new Nexus 7.
TIA

Custom Navigation buttons..sounds like a very nice idea.
Any ROMs currently implementing this or planning on it?
nice
That is a very good idea, would look nicer if the links were in the same blue scheme of ics
This is more of a theme concept than a development concept. Where's all the themers at?

Eerr big rush.... Couldn't this be implemented like aokp has rom control to manage the nav bar... Couldn't eos throw in a control where you can set a custom button n icon on the fly? We should be getting something similar it seems in b30 of aokp for maguro

Well... ugh... are you talking about just changing the pngs or adding additional buttons for apps?

Not just pngs but addition of custom shortcuts to other apps the addition of extra icons into the nav bar... On b30 I am now able to do all that and you can set what the long press does... Which is pretty cool I have to say

Ahh gotcha. I saw the story and video on Engadget. Congrats to the AOKP team! Yes we have something similar in the works. Then implementation will be different but I'm pretty sure the result will exceed expectations.

i seriously cant wait... we have so much nav bar room on the xoom... it would lead to epicness... and a much more minimalistic layout for the home screens
One thing that's kind of bugging me is the amount of vertical resolution lost while browsing in both Chrome and Dolphin due to four things:
1. The notification area.
2. The tabs display row.
3. The URL bar.
4. The navbar.
This ends up being a couple hundred pixels out of 800. One way to mitigate this would be to have the navbar appear on the right hand side of the screen like it is on the Galaxy Nexus. I personally find this convenient for actually tapping the soft keys themselves as that is how I am used to doing it on the Nexus 7 and my thumbs don't need to make the stretch to the center of the screen.
Yay or nay to show your interest in a vertical navbar on the left.
Thanks!
Install a custom ROM. Some have vert nav bar in landscape.

Any suggestions? Neither CM10 nor AOKP appear to offer this as an option.

Consolidate top and bottom black bar to bottom in Paranoid Android?
any way to do this? I I was able to in previous version of this.
Thanks!
I believe you are talking about "tablet mode". If you're running the latest beta of Paranoid Android (2.99), then you have to wait a bit. The developers are still working on making it compatible with android 4.2.

Thanks! I never knew what it was called. Makes so much more sense having one bar. It kills me wasting The space now.
Google has officially killed off tablet ui in 4.2, so it may be awhile before we see it successfully implemented into new roms.

There is a patch in the development forum that brings back tablet ui. It is limited on how far you can go with the lcd density. I've only been able to get it to 178. I am used to running at 160, but that setting causes it to flip back to the unified ui. I would like to be able to get back to 160.
I used the following
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
It does not work for samsung 4.3 rom. Is there a way to do it? Thanks.
I am not rooted but from my experience with Note 2 this is n ot possible .

I found the solution. qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 will enable nav bar if the dpi is change to a value less than 320.

I want the same thing, to enable the NavBar/Softkey. I came upon this mod for the S4:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285624, but have not been able to get it to work.
I posted a thread, but got no help.

I'll try the 320 DPI on my Sprint N3 and see how it goes... Thanks.

Tried it, didn't work, "SystemUI has stopped" like before. I believe we have to modify SystemUI like the S4 to get the NavBar to work.
any news?
I'm pretty happy with "Ultimate Dynamic Navbar" on my phone. The one major downside is that it covers part of the screen. I just set it to the minimum height for now (it's bigger in the attached pic). But I love the customizable icons (Samsung style, HTC style, etc).
After that, I turned off the backlight in the system settings and used "Xposed Additions" to disable/remap the capacitive touch keys.

Depends which version you are on, and you need to enable it. For ROMs close to stock, when you pull down the notification panel, press and hold the little settings gear. When a wrench appears, it's enabled. It will either show up in dev options or right in the main settings panel.

Google didn't enable it on stock but some custom Roms do, such as SAOSP. Also, take a look under the last Mods section on the homepage, as I believe there is a flash able mod to enable it.
