Hey guys,
I'm coming from a galaxy note 8.0 and the reason I loved that tablet was the ability to support ex-fat in the system so I can play larger file size videos.
Ideally, this would be something I would like on my new Nexus 7. I haven't used OTG cables so this is fairly new to me and I'm getting mixed answers on whether or not the Nexus 7 supports it or if it most likely support ex-fat.
Can someone confirm this for me?
CM10.2 supports exfat. Not sure if it includes provisions for native usbdisk mounting for the 2013 N7.
Otherwise, there's third party support if you're willing to get your hands a little dirty..
OTG doesnt work properly, its due to 4.3 changes, it has been reported to Google by Nexus Media Importer (look on FAQ)

As you know, Nexus 7 doesn't have HDMI, and I thought it's Micro USB doesn't support MHL or USB OTG. But, I just found this device which claims it's verified to be compatible with the Nexus 7?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008CQKM2U/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
Is this possible? If so, could I do mirroring with this device?
The Nexus 7 has been known to support USB OTG for a long time now, which is what that device can be used for, not MHL.
Oh...Ok.. I thought MHL/OTG were one in the same. Gotcha. This line in the description is deceptive then:
"*The MHL function is compatible with most phones. Verified Compatible Devices: --Nexus 7 Tablet"
So, just to confirm, that device will work with the N7, however the HDMI output of it will not work, correct?
That's correct... mhl is a hardware chip and is not on the nexus 7... however the tegra 3 fully spuuports miracast which is a new wifi standard that can mirror over smart and wifi direct enabled TVs... so its coming (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
Hello, I have a Google Nexus 7 tabled and I like it very much. The only flaw I see is the screen colors but for budget tablet is is ok.
I have a question: Does Nexus 7 supports any microUSB to HDMI cable ?
I have read numerous posts in the internet about how Nexus 7 does not support neither HDMI or OTG - but I have a OTG cable and it works great, mice, keyboards, flash drives and even a 1 TB external hard drive work great on the tablet.
So I bought this cable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-1-5ft-1-5...912&pid=100015&prg=1085&rk=1&sd=230893786628&
but after I received it - I can't make anytong to make the cable work.
does anyone have any info on how to make it work or is is a possibility at all to have HDMI output on Nexus 7.
thanks.
As far as I know, n7 doesn't support any kind of HDMI out. As they have labeled that item as for the nexus 7 they are wrong... Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope, sorry but there is no way. Unless no way known to me...and believe me, I made a very wide research!

Hi!
IMHO the Google Nexus 10 has only one issue - a missing SD card slot...
...besides that it is fast, the display is very good and WiFi, bluetooth, OTG-Support and everything else is working good.
For Data-Transfer I use OTG and an USB-Stick with 64GB.
The intresting things in the comparison is the keyboard dock (if you need it), the SD card slot and maybe the better camera of the TF700t.
If you can life with the 32GB and maybe a usb device via OTG as backup then I would go for the Google Nexus 10 (again) - if you need a SD card slot and a keyboard dock - get the TF700t.

As far as the keyboard goes, I have a nice case with BT keyboard that I am perfectly happy with.
The rear camera on the n10 is actually more than adequate for a tablet. If picture taking is important to you, use a phone or get a camera, you will look ridiculous walking around taking pics on a tablet!
I was admittedly worried about storage at first, but once you realize you don't REALLY need 50 games installed you find you have plenty of room. LOL

Most of the time I don't need a keyboard and I also use a BT keyboard if needed - but one must admit that the solution for the Asus is more sophisticated - that's why I wrote "if he needs it".

Agreed - I use it to take photos instead of notes...
BTW: I have seen people running around and taking photos using their tablet - severeal times - an yes it looks ridiculous...

I miss the SD Card slot alot - I am always on the edge with my use of storage space and I have installed only 2-3 Games.
BWT: Good games use between 1-4GB - so space might be used up fast.
This is IMHO the only big downside for all new Google Nexus products and the reason why I didn't buy a google Nexus 4, because I already almost filled the 70GB usable space on my LG P990 and don't know how to downgrade to a phone using only 16GB...
I can live with the 32GB on my Nexus 10 only because I can use a 64 GB Sticks over OTG-cable.
If Google brings out either a Nexus phone with 128GB or even better one with 32 or 64 GB and a SD card slot - I would buy that right away.

Thx for the replies. Then may i ask what the nexus media importer app for if nexus10 supports otg??
You need the media importer if your ROM does not support OTG storage natively.
BTW, take into account the battery lives of the two devices, I heard there were big differences.
+1 for nexus 10 the only thing transformer had that I liked was the dock and keyboard. Ill take guaranteed first updates and my own Bluetooth keyboard (if I need one) over that

Hi!
You need Nexus media importer for stock rom when you not rooting your device (you could use stick mount then) - many custom roms support OTG natively.
But NMI works great if don't want to root your device and don't want to install a custom rom.
And one more thing, has the reboot bug been fixed??

to/from PC file transfer is a little buggy but fast when there aren't problems
The main problem I think is with MTP rather than with the nexus, but I could be wrong there
Basically file transfers lock up if you try access other files/directories on the nexus via the PC while actively transferring files.
Once the transfer locks, I have to unplug the n10 and plug it back in and restart the copy.
And win7 at least doesn't provide a "no to all" option which is really annoying when most of the files were copied over

I'm asking because, if I'm understanding this correctly, to use an OTG device on the Nexus 4, you need to supply power to it ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/orig-development/usb-otg-externally-powered-usb-otg-t2181820 ). I know that plugging in devices like a gamepad or keyboard doesn't work on a Nexus 4 so this is making me think these products have a chance of not working on a Nexus 4.
Does anyone know for sure if it works on not without any complex method? I'm on stock with Franco Kernel if that matters

These use OTG-USB, you would need a compatible kernel or patch (http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/development/kernel-patch-hells-core-kernel-otg-t2586524) then an external power source since the N4 doesn't have hardware support for power for OTG-USB.
First of all I'm not the terrible newbie I appear. I logged in this site and it asked me to tie my user name with my google profile and now I'm a 2 post wonder.
Anyway I installed and rooted the Android 5 Lollipop on my Nexus 7 last night and then tried to hook a DAC to it. Previously running USBROM w Timur kernel so I know hardware is fine.
The exact same DAC's are working perfectly under Android L Developer preview on my Nexus 7 2013.
Anybody else try to hook an external USB DAC up?
Also on my USBROM set up I had a Y OTG cable for the DAC and simultaneous charging. I cannot charge through the OTG Y cable now.

I installed Lollipop 5.0 on my Nexus 7 2013 and USB DAC's work perfectly.
I was thinking maybe the root process or kernel patch broke it so I .........
So I checked the md5 checksum on the grouper Nexus 7 2012 and it was fine. I reinstalled it via fastboot and tried again before root. Negative results. No USB DAC is working on my Nexus 7 2012. When you put on headphones and plug in the OTG and DAC it will hiss for a second and then release, like it's trying to connect and then releases the device. I've tried with 2 OTG's and 4 DAC's all of which work on Nexus 7 2013 and 5.0.
Something is broken with USB DAC support on Nexus 7 2012 5.0 update, at least here on my device. Again, yesterday I had USBROM installed and it worked perfectly so I doubt it's a hardware issue.
Can someone else confirm?
yeah just tried a previously working USB sabre mini dac and no bueno.. it has a small light that lights up but nothing for sound output
Yeah, I tried it on E18. It did recognise the DAC (I know because the volume slider popped up for a moment) but there is no sound coming through through the DAC/Amp. Tried USB Audio Player Pro and it worked. Just did the latter to ensure I have the DAC properly connected. I will try it on my son's N7 2013.
I was hoping Android 5 would solve DAC compatibility issues. I noticed that Android version number can affect DAC compatibility-- for instance, the Note 2 talked to the HRT Musicstreamer 2 but not the E17 on Android 4.1.2. On Android 4.3, it's the other way around.
I would try other DACs, I think it is an issue with USB enumeration, as the hardware should compatible. If another DAC works, which I expect many will, then it will be interesting to see which devices work.

I have no less than 6 DAC's at my house and none work on Nexus 7 2012. They all work on Nexus 7 2013. Confirmed with a couple other people I know that DAC support on the 2012 isn't working. It's broken.
Actually not a big deal for me but just reporting what I found in the hopes that they'll fix it. It was one of the major bullet points of Android 5.

Thanks for clarifying.
It sure would be nice to have USB OTG + Charge and full DAC compatibility with Android 5, but at this point I am really thinking I'm over the 2012. I might pick up a 2013 because the Nexus 6 is pretty dissapointing to me.
Hi,
I'm as disappointed as U. Waiting for the updates for ages but got nothing. We've been deceived by Google's promises.
Somebody need to check the kernel first. Seems Google using old kernel which I don't know what it's capable of. Maybe no improvement on the kernel from the features PoV.
I'm monitoring with U on this thread might somebody get enlightenment
I'm sure some dev will fix it. I hope lol. Dash install in need of lollipop

In the interim I have rolled back to USBROM with Timur Kernel. It does everything. USB Audio, 3G dongle, etc.
Although it was a bit of a challenge. Every time I tried to copy the backup of USBROM from my computer to the TWRP directory it would fail saying it couldn't copy data.ext4.win back to the device. Really aggravated me I did a NANDROID backup and couldn't restore it. Then I got smart and moved the file with an adb push from computer to Nexus and then all was well again.
