I too think it is way to quiet here.

i was kind of expecting that too:crying:

don't think of how it lacks, rejoice in the fact that there IS a community!
back in the day, there were no internet communities. face to face, telephone and mail, those were your options.
I've done SOOOO MUCH w/ my ouya! without the community, i would never be able to do it.
wise men say never expect more. if you want more, do it yourself.

Risky flash process is off-putting. I expect we'll see much more activity once it is possible to flash a recovery with less risk of ending up with a hundred dollar paperweight. Plus the OUYA people promised an open console and many people have been disgusted enough to have avoided the console altogether due to the horror that customer relations have proven to be.

There's also (understandably) more interest in phones and tablets that already have momentum. I won't touch my OUYA until I go back to school where I have an HDTV that won't give me a headache, so that's why I'm basically tuned out here. That, and all the people raging in this forum.

I am definitely pissed about certain things that could have been handled alot better (Like right now I'm forcing myself to not go into examples). But I think we need to move on. I don't think any device has ever really had a lot of things going on when you first get them. Really if I would have read some of this stuff before hand I would have still got it but the average person might not and there could be a bad ass developer right now weighing out whether or not he should get this thing and it's not looking good. I'd like to see adam outler with one of these things

Anyone locked themselves out by forgetting username and password? Haven't even rooted this Damn thing yet... If anyone knows a way to help me it would be great... ouya cs is no help...

Nope. Not going to happen. The OUYA was billed as an open console and what has been delivered to us paying customers has been anything but open. I will not be quiet, I will not get over it, nor will I go away.
If the OUYA fails it will be because of bitterness by early adopters like myself who discovered we had been sold a bill of goods and are educating everyone else we know on what a horrible deal the OUYA is as a result.

This one could have. It was going to be different--"So begins the revolution", remember? If the OUYA team had actually delivered something open they could have had an instant community of developers and users springing up around the device--instead people are getting increasingly vocal about bugs, the lack of transparency and a lack of a true open console. These people are not going to go away.
At the current rate things are going I highly doubt the OUYA will see its third hardware revision. There might be a poorly sold second edition but there will be no third version because the poor sales of the second release will kill the company. If it happens it will be their own fault for not fulfilling their promises to their customers.

If I could do it all over again, I'd have not purchased the OUYA. I'd probably have investigated some of the more interesting Android\Linux arm boards coming out in a bid to roll my own game\media center box.

Let me make it easy for any developers looking in. I have already bought three OUYA games and have been adding several others to a mental list of games I'd like to purchase in the near future, but I absolutely refuse to buy any more games until the OUYA team fixes the USB storage bugs. I will not buy a single game from this time forward until things change.
--bornagainpenguin

I loved my Ouya at first, rooted , cmw, emulators, side loading. But overscan killed me to death. I don't want to use this on my 42 inch I want It on my 32 inch Samsung gaming tv. lets face it the nexus 7 delivers what ouya can't, hdmi out open source and the ability to take it on the go as a fabulous tablet to. but it's double the price. I returned mine and if ouya doesn't get it's stuff in order this thing will be a dud.I have Roku, Chromecast, 2 Nexus 7's and every current gen console. we have steambox on the way, Xbox one, Ps4 and more coming. Ouya is going to be eaten alive if it doesn't open up the pandoras box and let the fun out.

[Q] ROOT?

I love my Evo. Main reason? Personalization, flashing custom roms, flashing fonts, etc. My knowledge of development ain't that great though and I'm wondering from those "in the know": Do you think we'll access root and be able to flash custom roms?
For me, this is the best tablet b/c it runs android. I don't mind the price, I just want to be able to do what I want to the device Opinions?
I wouldn't doubt it. In fact, I expect it. I don't think there are any android devices that haven't been rooted. Just have to give it time once it's released.

Whats the deal with the locked bootloader on some Moto devices? I hear the term but I'm not familiar with what it means (EVO owner). I assumed it had to do with not being able flash ROM's and/or root. Can anybody explain?

That's about all it is. They shut down any access to the loader which means you can get around to install anything. Most of motos new phones are this way. Its a kick in the nards but it protects their hardware from stuff like overclocking and burning out stuff. And of course the occasional brick.
I hate it but I see the point. And I can see the xoom being locked....little expensive for them to have to keep taking back because a new rooter f'ed theirs up.
Hmmm. Though I don't see custom ROMs being as necessary, that actually gives me a touch of pause. I don't like to think that the life of the device can't be extended if Motorola created a XOOM 2 or something.

I don't think the hardware spec as is will get outdated anytime soon.
Well..outdated yes, regress into unusable for web, video and apps.. certainly not.
The device per the data sheet will still run things quite well as we know them now for a very long time.
Only thing yet to be really proven is how teg2 can handle intensive 3d functions in 'real world' scenarios.. and if you think Crysis will be better played on a tablet I have a bridge for sale.

I know the hardware won't be outdated, I'm talking about all the obsolete android phones because their OEMs abandoned them and they never got FroYo. I think if it ends up being locked down I might have to utilize Best Buy's new return policy on the 28th day.
The Atrix has already been rooted:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/19/motorola-atrix-4g-already-rooted-and-its-not-even-out-yet/
I wouldn't be shock if Motorola backs off the boot loader block. Pretty funny huh. I was talking to the guys in best buy mobile and they claimed it was verizon that was locking down the boot loaders. Of course these are the same guys who were shocked when I told them I had a OC nook color w/ froyo and honeycomb.

Shame on you for talking to BB employees about anything technical. No hate, but most of them are morons.
It just makes me laugh when I talk to people like that. Being an electronics technician I do it sometimes just to see what chunks of stupid come out of their mouths.
Since the Xoom is intended to be the reference development tablet platform by Google, it should be easy to root and has an easy to unlock bootloader, just like the Nexus One and Nexus S.
That being said, Motorola is Motorola... so they may do their usual Motorola thing and encrypt everything up. But I think the chance that the Xoom is easy to mess around with is pretty high.

Same with me. Infact im not even sure im going to get the damn thing. They were so unorganized and unprepared. I NEVER go on websites and do the ratings but for this i did. It was a horrible experience trying to get this thing pre ordered. 3 of the techs had to talk to each other to figure out what i was asking for. I didnt think the statement "i would like to pre order the motorola xoom" was all that confusing. I never shop at best buy but being as inpatient as i am i took the risk to get my hands on this thing as fast as possible. I just hope i get a call once they come in. As it looked im going to be the only call they have to make.
Did anyone else get a copy of their preorder or just a receipt?

Thats all i have also. The confusion among the techs had me skeptical. Hopefully my skepticism doesnt hold to be true.
Also praying for no locked bootloader. Hoping to be rooted within the first few days
All I got was the receipt and the gift card as well. Got to our BB ~1300 to place the order and was the first to actually place an order, as opposed to people asking questions about it. Course our BB is in a town of ~50,000 (metro area ~150,000) so I was a little concerned they would even get any in for Thursday, they say they are indeed due in this week.
Did see the preorder paperwork she filled out.
Like above, they didn't know what they were looking for. The girl found it without too much wait though.

Yep, ran into the same problem. The guy had no clue, the female was all over it. She knew exactly what I was asking for, went right to the pre-order sheet and got it done lickity split and she was hot to.

Stood next to a dude who also thought of getting a Xoom...

...and after discussing about the advantages and disadvantages of the Xoom, we finally left the store with the same thought of waiting for the Samsung 10.1 tablet.
What's the point of this thread????....
Patience is virtue.
I guess you don't mind the lack of an SD card slot...

Assuming there is sufficient advantage to waiting.
Waiting by itself doesn't qualify having patience. Sometimes it means you don't understand the choice. The only real "disadvantage" in buying the Xoom now is the price. What about the Samsung tablet appeals to you more? Or was this purely about the Xoom?

Ha, was laughing at that too.
Am I missing something. What on earth makes the tablet by Samsung any better than one by motorola unless you are a homunculus incapable of holding a 1.6lb device but can hold a 1.3?
In all seriousness though, besides aestethics and brand preference I don't see the draw. I am seriously looking googling to try and find the big deal. Moto is a proven OEM in the Android world, and the XOOM is wide open and soon to be 4G capable. I see that the 10.1 is supposed to be HSPA 21+mbps so I am assuming T-Mo's fake 4G?
It seems it has a better rear camera, higher resolution video, optional capacities, and a proximity sensor(did they forget this isn't a phone) in the THINGS THE XOOM DON'T category.
It has a single instead of dual led flash, no new data tech, no HDMI, no barometer(hmmm someone tell me wtf a barometer is for) no external memory(which I will be using to put music on my tablet when I get a deal on a 32gb microsd, or so I tell myself), no ambient light sensor(I don't like autobrightness but I see the utility) in the THINGS THE XOOM DOES category.
Options are good but I don't get the point of this pointless thread .

I did not mention in my first post that I also bought the Xoom at Motorola for 25% off and I already have the UPS tracking number and it will be delivered this coming Monday. My bank statement has shown that the charge is complete.
So the price is not really the issue here.
I will not open my Xoom on Monday when I received it but will wait for March 22 to decide.
Biggest advantages of the Samsung tablet are the following:
1. Lighter weight
2. Most likely a better screen (brighter/better contrast). You look at the screen 100% of the time when you use a tablet (unless you just listen to music) so this is very important.
Big disadvantage
1. May not be rootable
Like I mentioned, you don't seem to understand the choice if those are your only disadvantages. I get that you're waiting, I just find your attitude funny.

Your a better man than me. Me, personally I will never buy another samsung product. What shortcomings does the Xoom have that the 10.1 won't have? From what I have read the 10.1 is inferior spec wise to the Xoom althoigh they are very close.

The funny thing is that is Apple is the one crying about it. I don't think it will affect us since Google is open source. And with the nexus line these phones are considered" developer phones" so I don't think it will affect the Android community.

Well i dont think it gonna pass and if it does who is gonna stop me from rooting/hacking my own sh*t..
It's useless to try and legally ban people from customizing the tech they own. If governments/corporations try, they'll fail and only harm themselves.
That would have to reverse the supreme court ruling that once purchased we can do what we want with our device. This was a suit for the PS3. Sony still had the right to deny services but could do no legal action on modded PS3s. The same will stand for our phones. The worst that could happen is a clause is added to our contracts giving the carrier the right to refuse service to rooted devices.
I Hope your wrong about the phone service
Still, being able to deny service would suck considering the only reason why I rooted my device to begin with was for the WiFi Hack. However, if any one out there know answer me this. How would sprint or another service provider figure out that your phone is rooted? From a noobs point of view I see no way of them finding out anything unless they sell you a phone that's bugged. But if you think about it for you window 7 users out there, windows gives the option to install a bug that determines if your windows is genuine but does not come preinstalled.
I really don't think it will effect us I been hacking before the bill passed an I will b if I don't get exstented, nothing changed really I don't think. I'm more worried about sopa

Google knows every app on your phone. If you have 1 app for rooted phones then you are probably rooted. Sprint can ping your phone and get the kernel, firmware and baseband you are running. If it doesn't show stock numbers, they know you are rooted.

Assuming you can do it all on your own and don't require any outside information or collaboration then technically nobody will stop you or likely even know. However if this decision does expire and it becomes a potential crime then you will see a lot less innovation.

If you're referring to the 'Android community' as the 'Android userbase' then I think you're WAY off. Not a chance 50% of the people with an Android phone are rooted. I mean, think of all the 40+ year olds that have android phones and hardly know how to use a touch screen, let alone anything about root. It may appear that way considering we're on this forum together or the friends you have, but I assure you, that number is probably much, much closer to 5-10% if that. Even that's a stretch. Doesn't android have like 300,000 activations per day going or something like that? There is no way half those people are rooting their phones.
Back on topic, the carrier can certainly check to see what's running on your phone as kenny (I think) posted previously. Also as stated above, I don't think this is anything to worry about as there has already been a precendent set about making it illegal. Carriers denying service to your handset knowing it's rooted is another topic though.
See, I remember when competition was about innovation, and if you wanted to keep yourself in business, the best way was to make something revolutionary. If Apple wants to keep itself in business, at least in the mobile market where they make the majority of income, they need to out innovate Android. Naysaying, and saying this is infringing on something, is not innovation. I mean the lockscreen is one thing that gets me, on Google it goes two ways, Google INNOVATED better then Apple, yet that is what they sue them for. Really?

See, I remember when competition was about innovation, and if you wanted to keep yourself in business, the best way was to make something revolutionary. If Apple wants to keep itself in business, at least in the mobile market where they make the majority of income, they need to out innovate Android. Naysaying, and saying this is infringing on something, is not innovation. I mean the lockscreen is one thing that gets me, on Google it goes two ways, Google INNOVATED better then Apple, yet that is what they sue them for. Really?

Its sad how true this is. Before apple would just do their own thing, creating their products like the Ipod, not caring about what other MP3 devises may be out there. They just made it better. Now they get upset that the idea they stole has been modified and used by google... give me a F* break. end rant

Your comment makes sense none.
There's nothing to pass. This is about an existing law/exemption permitting smartphone hacking to expire.
Personally, I could care less. Samsung isn't going to sue us (though Sprint could), and Samsung already has open bootloaders.
The folks that should be worried are iPhone hackers. Apple will sue them into oblivion, and shoot themselves in the process.
I dont think they would go after the users, but they would go after source of information. Eitherway i dont like it. our devices we buy, should be for us to do as we please. i dont like restrictions, goverment should focus on other things more important than to stop innovation for the sake of companies profit. And companies should concentrate on putting quality products out there.

Agree 100%! Once you buy a device it is yours to do what you please with it! If you want to risk bricking it or voiding the warranty, that should be your prerogative and nobody should be able to tell you otherwise! No matter if its a windows phone, iphone, or android you should be able to do as you please once you own the device...

if i can buy a phone and smash it to the ground into a million little pieces just because, with no repercussion, i should be able to mod the software with out any problems as well.

[Q] Hpw to get into the android development business

So I've been a big fan of Android phones since their first release. I never bought into the IOS hype. I'd like to get into that kind of thing. So how does someone get into such business? College courses or do you have to find a company and work your way up?
BTW FAIL on the thread title... noticed it after I posted it -__-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1628565 hope you do well.
I saw that and I've been studying, reading many guides and such, but I was wondering how to get into the actual business because I know all of the devs here do it out of their free time. I was wondering how to actually be behind the making of the next big thing in smartphones. I know it can't certaintly be by working at T-Mobile by just selling phones (Which btw I applied and I'm hoping for a call back lol) So yeah... any insight?
i know that high school and college students have a chance to work at Intel as an intern over the summer... i'm trying to see if i can get in hehe

I think that in order for you to actually get recognized and make android (or whatever smartphone os) a career for you, you will need some kind of college education, like most careers today. As for what you'd major in and etc., I'm not exactly sure, but my college offers a mobile applications class and etc. under computer science and I'm thinking about trying to get into it,.but it also seems like a waste of time for the fact all of this can be learned w/o taking courses b/c of all the tutorials and programs available today and you can teach yourself. So I'm not sure what to do, but its something I'm interested in as well so I may ask about it in the computer science department whenever I get the chance to...
As for working at T-Mobile...that job is a joke unless you live in a major city or something.
To my experience, the employees at T-Mobile don't know how to do anything other than operate a phone, tell you its selling points and process the order and contracts or w/e.
You don't have to know **** about phones and can still work there.
For ex: I live right outside of Nashville, there's quite a few places where you can get T-Mobile, like in the mall there's about 3 kiosks for T-Mobile and there's a T-Mobile store right across from the mall. I talked to the guys at the kiosks all the time cause I used to work at Hollister and A&F, and they don't know much about phones at all. I worked in the front of the stores as a greeter and they'd have a kiosk right in front of my store, so I'd walk straight from the store to their kiosk and talk about phones with them and they'd be like "why do you work at those stores and know so much about phones?" It wasn't so much that I knew a lot about phones, it was what I assumed to be basic knowledge for anyone that is surrounded by and works with phones all day.
And another example, there's a T-Mobile store right by my campus, but this isn't really a major city, so this is like the only one unless you'd travel a almost an hour to the next store.
Anyways they offered me a job b/c some guy came in w/ an iPhone 4 but didn't know what to do to get it on T-Mobile. I overheard the conversation and asked the guy about it and then told him exactly what he should do (like jailbreak and etc.) cause the store didn't know what to do, and not only that, they called "THE" guy that they normally talk to about iPhones and he didn't even know what to do...so I was like look, I used to have an iPhone on T-Mobile, this is what you need to do, etc. etc., and then they offered me a job. I told them I'm not interested ATM b/c my grades are sucking ass in college right now (I'm a freshman) and I wanted to get my grades up.
So I come back about a month and a half later and they have a new employee there - she doesn't know **** about cell phones either! But its not like the others know much more than she does.
Moral of those two stories: you don't have to know much about cell phones to work for a carrier's store. Not saying EVERY employee is like that, but to my experience, they are. Just like best buy employees
Its sad I can tell someone that works w/ TV's there more about a TV than that employee can, yet he's getting paid for the little knowledge he knows -___-
I don't even keep up w/ TV tech...

Haha, yea. I'm trying to take the course w/ the mobile app development and stuff but I didn't think I wanted to do a computer science major, so I took the "dumbed down" intro course which is only half the prerequisite, so next semester, I'm taking the other half needed for me to get into the mobile app course. It should be fairly easy cause this other half I need is only half a semester and they kinda dumbed it down too, and most of it's online and I can do the assignments at my own pace. All i'm doing is programming that little lego robot kids used to play with, at least that's what the guy made it seem like. He said it's supposed to give you a general idea on how to "speak computer language", knowing that computers will only do what you tell it to do or something like that...
My memory is so effed up right now, lol.
Lol that sounds confusing and stressful. But that's what it takes to work for android I guess lol I'm up for it though

How to be "in business".. Are you sure you want it?
There are several things you might want to do:
1) Write apps for Android (and iOS too). Don't need any formal education for that, just know programming well (Java for Android, System C for iOS).
2) Develop HW or SW for the phones. For that you need to be either HW or SW engineer. That means - going to a recognized university and getting at least Bachelor of Engineering (which is a sort of BSc) degree in either Electronic Engineering or Software Engineering, then get a job in one of the corporations in this field.
And I suggest not basing such important decisions in life as choosing your profession, on a suggestion from a forum.

Google taking a beating over Nexus 7 problems...

On Google groups people are upset, and rightfully so.
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/nexus/nexus-7/Tetp20r-REo
The Nexus 7 touchscreen problem has been ignored by google, Asus, the tech press......
Google has had a free pass long enough.
I'm glad I was able to return mine.
I hope you guys are paying attention to how they are handling this defect.....IGNORE IT.
I would advise to never buy from a company who ignores or runs from problems.
Mine works fine and most of the complaints are exaggerated as usual

Mine does have this annoying touch problems, and it's really annoying. Yours fine? Good, please don't disrespect others complaint if yours "fine".
This is the kind of thing I don't understand, someone does a thread of the issue/news on it and suddenly comes people with their "fine" product and post how "fine" theirs are or/and that they don't care.
If your Nexus is "fine", then no need to read about it, enjoy it, but there are a lot of us who got a bad unit, I can't return it because it started after the 15 days of return warranty, so I'm stuck with it.

Yup, and the 15 day return period is a joke as well.
All defects should be covered by a free replacement warranty equal to the product warranty.....NOT REPAIR...and the customer should not pay a dime for shipping.
At least one year......after the way Google has handled this they should extend the free replacement warranty to 3 years. (Yeah right)
I'm not buying an Asus device again that's for sure, at least not until the product is well tested...

Please don't disrespect us who have perfectly working products by only calling out those who have issues.
Mine works fine.
I'm not sure if 7 people in that thread is really Google taking a beating. Also, it really isn't Google's problem. It is Asus'. How many tablets were sold vs how many have the issue. I got mine on launch day and no issue. I've had to send a few different items back to Asus in the past and had to pay shipping every time, but then again, $7 for shipping vs having to buy a new item is ok in my eyes. What a gimme gimme gimme world we live in.

Next time, read well before quoting something directed to another user. I was specifically quoting him for saying that most of the complaints were exagerated, were a touch problem on a touch screen device is definitely not exagerated, besides how could you know if your device is working "fine". My quote wasn't directed at you, not interested in continuing this.

ROFL!!
"A gimme gimme world!!" - You are a corporations dream come true!!!
I paid for a defective product and in my business, I take care of my customers who receive defects.
You are SO wrong.
Such a "gimme gimme world" that I just spent money on a new tablet that actually WORKS!!! Nobody gave it to me!! IMAGINE THAT. I spent my hard earned dollars and received a functioning product - WOW!! What a novel concept.
No need to be a prick.....and you were one.
I currently have a mild problem with the touch, it's not as bad as some but its still annoying. Has anyone who has rooted and installed a custom rom experience the touch problem go away?

You use the word "so" where he uses "and". Two very different words and uses. I'm sorry if someone close has developed some form of cancer but don't bring it to an Android forum...:good:
Edit: Google isn't taking near the beating as you nay sayers lol
Mine's been working fine with no issues *knocks on wood*. I got it at launch. I don't expect any device to launch without issues but maybe it's just me. I'm not seeing this as a common widespread issue.

Okay replace and with so, my point still stands.
I also don't see how my analogy would be offensive to someone who knows someone with breast cancer so don't turn it into that, you also don't make the rules so I'll bring it up if I want to.

Yup.
My touchscreen was mildly effected also. Mostly the missing touch problem when not holding the device (ie: sitting on a table or such).
Rooted using the forum tutorials, installed sfhub's ts10 update and the touchscreen works fine now. No skips, no missing or ghost touches.
For the record, I've only been using android for about 2 weeks now so it's not that hard to learn how to apply the fix that worked on mine.
Now, should an end user have to do you this to their device? Nope, it should come this way. For mine it was such an easy fix, it would seem they have no excuse for not designing the software properly in the first place.
I quite like the rest of the devices features (ie: nice screen, battery life, speed, just right size for book reading and fitting in my coat pocket, etc) and it's quickly becoming a favorite device of mine.
As to those saying thiers works fine, I think they are valid comments. Not all the devices are effected and as is normal with human behavior, those that feel "screwed" are often the ones who are the loudest. Not that they're not justified in being upset with getting a "broken" product, they are.
But it is equally valuable to hear from those that get products that work.
How else are we going to know if there are more bad than good if we don't also hear from "the good"?

You're absolutely right: I don't make the rules and you can bring it up if you want to. I was simply suggesting that life and death disease analogies can always offend Someone and might be a little overboard on an Android forum.
You would need to replace so with and. He was making two separate points and connecting with the word and, while you are expressing cause-effect with so (should be used in conclusion). Though due to ambiguity I could be completely wrong. You brought up logic. I just thought it would be easier for two rational human beings to get to the same spot.
And my G2 screen is wonkier than my Nexus 7. Turning it off and back on seems to solve it though.
Guys, let's not argue about whether what's important to one is also important to you. Everyone has their own opinion. It looks like enough people are upset about the issues, and that is a fact.
I am one of those people. After devs here on XDA put together near perfect AOSP roms for my ThunderBolt, I expected stuff coming out of Google directly to be rock solid. N7 is my first Nexus device, and I am quite disappointed with regular random reboots that I still have, as well as intermittent touch screen issues. For example, I can't play Subway Surfers since N7 keeps ignoring some portion of screen touches (leading me to crash lol).
My HTC DNA, however, is rock solid on the stock rom. Why can't a Nexus device be the same? People typically complain of manufacturers adding stuff to android that makes it worse. Well, I am not so ready to say that now. As far as I am concerned, HTC is doing a better job with their devices than Google.
PS, TB was buggy when it came out, but all the bugs were subsequently fixed, even on Verizon!
