Back Glass Question

Story of what happened skip to break if you don't care
Hey all I have had my nexus since launch day and well I broke my glass, 100% my fault tried stopping it from falling off an end table and ended up sandwiching the phone between my hand and the table corner... shattered.
Normally I would just put a skin on it and be done with it but unfortunately it is right over the camera and the way light hits it when taking pictures distorts pictures, even after chipping away the glass also the camera lens is unprotected now.

Okay so I found back glass replacements not the whole cover literally the glass, now I have heard mixed reports on the wireless charging and NFC on he glass or on a plastic divider.
Could I just chip away the glass and re-adhere the new glass? Or would I have to fully take the phone apart.
If I have to take it apart I might as well buy the full replacement back.

My advice would just to get a new back replacement including all the NFC and wireless charging components. Its much less hassle but its more expensive I believe. Its the "safest" way imo.

Agreed it would be the safest, but I am pretty competent in electronics repair just don't like going in blind if I don't have to...

Found my answer, there is no divider in-between the glass and qi receiver.

Replacing JUST the N4 back glass on the battery door?

Is it possible to JUST replace the back glass on the battery door? Has anyone attempted this? Ive looked and seen that the whole part (glass and door) is around 60 dollars which is kinda pricey and just the glass is around 20 which is alot better in my book so I was wondering if it is at all possible? Thanks for any info!

Yes its possible, you just have to be careful with the NFC and inductive charging coils

Thanks thats good to know. Is there a guide or anything that shows how and where to be careful and whats the best way to remove the glass from the back?

Not to be jerk but it's not rocket science. There is no best way to open it. There's only one way to do it. Just take off the back case and replace it with the new one and that's it. don't worry about the stuff inside the back cover. It's glued tight.

Thanks but I emphasized JUST the glass cause thats what I want to do JUST the glass not the entire back cause its potentially cheaper to go that way not the entire back which I know is easier to do but it costs more. I havent seen anyone actually replace JUST the glass which is what I was asking about. Idk if its glued to just plastic and i can break it apart and pry it off then clean and re-glue or stick, or if the nfc and wcharging contacts are glued to the glass in some way or what, thats where I want to be careful

it is possible. the best bet is to go ahead and remove all the glass pieces and that will determine which part to order. be carefule because the nfc and wireless charger are glued directly to the glass so if you rip the nfc or wireless charger you need to buy the whole thing. there is a foil attached to the inside of the back that is extremely easy to rip. mine was shattered into a lot of tiny pieces so it took a long time to remove all of the glass. so now i can just buy the glass instead of the whole back cover. it is a pain but it can be done.

ok interesting i thought it may be like you described. My back isnt completly shattered just by the speaker grill and then its spread out in large cracks so its not a terrible shatter. Do you think it would be easier to remove the glass since it isnt completely shattered? And should I use heat to soften the glue and lessen the chance it rips off the nfc sticker? And would you happen to have pics or know of pics of what it looks like under the glass or with the glass removed? Thanks for your help and info!

I can pull the back off mine later and get a pic. But I'll have to wait until I get off work.

heres some pics. i outlined the foil so you can see where its at. i have a wide peice of clear tape where the glass was at to hold the wireless charger in until i get a new glass. heat definitely helps to soften the glue.

Oh wow thanks man! Looks like there's a few gaps for the glass and the nfc charging coil is loose without the glass. Interesting. I wonder how it will look on the inside after the new piece of glass is placed like messy or as clean as the original look. Do you know what should be used to stick the new glass? I'm still debating if I should do this lol

Im not real sure what to use either but I'd say to use some epoxy of some sort. I don't know if it would eat away at the paint on the back side of the glass or not. So I'd test it on something besides your phone first. I don't think two side tape would stay very well.

OP2 Display damage after heavy rain

Dear xda,
while being on holiday in South-East Asia, I got into some pretty heavy rain and my OnePlus 2 obviously didn't like the rain - the display seems to be broken since. Unfortunately I tried switching the phone on shortly after the water contact (because I needed it for navigation) and the display worked just fine while the phone seemed to be stuck software-wise (although now from a retrospective point of view it could have been that already then the display was somehow having issues).
I did put it in dry, uncooked rice just a few hours after the water contact and kept it there for a few days, with the SIM-Tray ejected and the back cover taken off. Still, after a few days, I tried switching it on again and I could notice that is was booting up just fine (I could see the capacitative buttons lighting up and even got some notification sounds after it booted up), but the display remained black
Back home I removed not only the SIM-Tray and the back cover but also the "inside cover" as well as the battery (it then looked like THIS) and put the phone back into rice for another 2 days. After that I reassambled the phone and tried switching it on again - still the display wasn't working.
After disassembling the phone again and taking the battery out, I put the remaining parts of the phone into the oven at about 45°C = 113°F for about 2h. But that didn't help either.
Is there any advice as how to maybe get my display working again? Maybe some cable or connection inside the phone that I could inspect or disconnect and reconnect? The process of buying a display on eBay and replacing the display seems to be rather complicated (due to the fact that the display is glued to the frame as from what I could see on ifixit.com) and I don't want to damage more than I already did while maybe the repair attempt doesn't help at all.
Does anyone have any experience/insight regarding how much it would cost me to open a repair ticket with OnePlus and let them repair/replace my display unit?

Guess it would cost around 200USD since the display is one of the costliest components in the phone. Not sure if it's only the display issue though. The water might have done some serious damage to the board itself.

I too considered buying a replacement screen on ebay or aliexpress. But I don't think I feel confident enough to take the necessary steps to replace the screen, because you seem to have to "unglue" the old screen and glue the new screen back on the frame (Sources: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/OnePlus+2+Screen+Replacement/51922#s115570 and https://youtu.be/Q1b5Ut5kTRM?t=4m).
Is it easier to do than I think? Did you face any issues while replacing it? Can you see or feel a difference with the new screen compared to the original one (i.e. does it perfectly fit into the frame without protruding)?

It was pretty straight forward and simple. I just applied heat to screen using a hairdryer and the used the included suction cup to gently loosed the screen from the adhesive using a credit hard to pry away the glue and then removed the connections to the screen and the touch-buttons and home button from the backside and then removed the screen. Then I moved over the home button and touch buttons to the new screen, applied some 3M adhesive strips on the frame after removing the old adhesive, put the screen back in place and reconnected the collectors, pushed the screen in place in the frame and heated it a bit too make sure the adhesive sticks and then screwed everything back in there and put on the back case. Done and done!

Ok I think I am gonny try tro buy a screen on aliexpress and replace it myself. Do you think this one should do?

well maybe you guys can help me out here i did the steps to replace the fingerprint sensor but now my screen wont stay glued , i have not been able to find the glue for the screen anyone can help with that by any chance ?

For me, the old adhesive came off with the old screen. But I did some cleaning with alcohol just to be sure.

Adhesive strips

Im planning to replace my battery because its 2 years old by now.
Last week my display was replaced under warranty by Samsung, and a new back-cover (with adhesive i guess) was also placed.
Samsung did not replaced my battery, but im planning to do this by myself. Repair guides are easy to follow, so that wont be the problem.
However, in these guides i cannot find anything about adhesive. So my question is, if the backcover and battery comes off, do i need to replace both adhesive layers (backpanel and battery) if i reassemble the phone?

This is highly probable. I know some people are extremely careful while removing the back piece and the adhesive stays intact. As for me, I had adhesive tape glued to new backplate I have ordered so all I had to do was to remove any residue left on the frame and put everything back together. The phone is still waterproof.

Well for me its just the battery i need to get replaced. I ordered a battery, but no adhesive. So if i remove carefully, is it mandatory to also replace the adhesive?

If the backplate survives and you ARE careful you should be good. Warm the sides with hair dryer and push it hard back so it won't separate. Not sure about the waterproofing though.

Don't really care about waterproofing. However, What do you mean with "push hard back"? Just like hair waxing and then pulling?

Notes from my Honor 8 Battery Replacement

While it is fresh in my mind.
1) The seam for the back is not along the surface, it is along the edge. The silver part and the glass is where you want to attack. It is going to be hot, wear gloves.
2) Don't use metal tweezers around the battery connector as it is always hot. I accidentally shorted the old battery and was afraid I'd also hit the motherboard but apparently did not.
3) The battery is glued in SOLID even though it appears to be a tight spot. The thing is, there are flat cables underneath (see photo) and the screen so you have to be careful. I have read not to use heat on it but I think you almost have to use a little. There is the frame between the battery and the screen, but too much leverage could easily damage the screen. I did not glue my new battery down. We will see.
4) If the thing turned on (or you turned it on) without the fingerprint sensor connected, you will need a reboot to find the fingerprint sensor. At first, I thought I had not seated the cable but then it dawned on me to reboot before I took the cable bracket and cable back off. That fixed it.
I managed to chip the midframe a little in one spot. Not bad and invisible in the case. Not very noticeable without the case. In fact, I didn't glue the back down yet because my case holds it all together with no issues and I thought I'd take a day or two to make sure nothing is going to pop loose in there.

After about a week with it in the case, the old adhesive was stuck on good so I left it alone. The new battery is holding up well. Phone is no longer my daily driver, though, but the battery is great.

Replaced my battery last night. End up reusing my old adhesive which worked out well. When it was still hot/soft, I took a flat head screwdriver and lightly drew the adhesive back flat on the surface as much as I could before beginning the full teardown.
That did the trick for me.
As for the battery itself, you're right... the battery is in there with some very strong adhesive. Had to actually use my heat gun to soften the adhesive and free it. For me, it wasn't coming out any other way and this part took the longest.
Didn't heat the battery directly as I didn't want to burn it so I heated the area from the screen side....be very careful as you do this as the screen can get burned as well. (Don't ask me how I know)
Overall the new battery is working very well and the phone feels like it did day 1 again. Can't wait to see the SOT time later this evening
Edit see attached...almost 5 hours again with 25% left with normal use and auto brightness on Nougat. Can easily see 6 hours at this rate! Very impressed

Damn this looks more complicated then changing it on an iPhone

YMMV but personally I can vouch that its one of the more time consuming and challenging repairs vs usual iPhone jobs. They use some type of space age adhesive that quite difficult to remove. Most of the repair is trying to gently remove the back glass, battery and screen. If you can quickly get those out without damaging the components, the rest of the repair is simple.

Are there replacement backs? My battery lasts maybe an hour of SoT at this point. I've tried factory resetting it. I'm tempted to get a new phone (because I'd like security updates), but the H8 is still fast enough to use. Mostly not knowing what I'm doing I figure breaking the back is fairly likely.
