[Q] How to tweak JB to see internet connection? - Networking

Hi all, my tablet don't have build-in SIM card reader, but do have 3G capabilities - though only for a short list of modems. My Nokia cs-19 USB modem is not on that list, so I have(together with Josh from http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/bb/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1563&p=10642#p10642 ) managed to get the modem working, for browsing.
The remaining problem is that though I can browse the web and browse Play store - I can't download from Play store.
I get the "Waiting for network" error that many on Sprint and 4G has gotten before, the diffence here is that I'm using 3G and that though I have an internet connection, JB repports "No internet connection" in status bar.
So my question is if its possible to force JB to see the connection, or think its always online?
Data on the tablet:
Android 4.1.1 JB Kernel 3.4.0+ Build number Cherry_A610_V2
1Ghz A9 Quadcore Action ATM7029 Cpu
Vivante GC1000+ QuadCore Gpu
7" HD IPS 5pt. Capacitive touch panel WXGA 1280x800
Micro SD slot for card up to 32GB
8GB Nand Flash instead of 16GB
1GB Ram
Wifi
Micro USB 2.0
VGA front camera, 2MP back camera
Super HD 2160p
4000mAh battery
3G support through dongle
Play store 4.2.3(already tried all the wiping cache tricks and reverting to older versions). With 4.2.3 "Waiting for network" changed to "downloading" but nothing happens.
The tablet is rooted!
with kind regards
JBJ
PS: if you have the RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error don't wipe your cache it will break Play store - just remove your google account and open Play store, then login with existing account - now it works and you can download and update again. Worked for me on wi-fi, not my usb(special problem).

search for "autopatcher" they have 3g dongle features for baking into roms. Also they have openpdroid, which lets you force online state to applications.

Tablet died after 4 months use, I have a new one now - different hw and brand and it worked out of the box.

How does Bell's HTC touch dual GPS Nav??

http://www.bell.ca/shopping/HTC-Touch-Dual/67331.details
I dont understand. Are they using 3G connection to navigate?
'cause in Canada the Touch Dual is a Niki400, not a Niki100
i believe it has a different rf chip and an antenna for gps
I will check this!!!
GPS isnt GPS ... if it use A-GPS then its possible to enable of Niki and Neon too. But Prove of concept only work with a picture of the main board with all antennas inside!
It is a real GPS and I use it with different applications. One of them can identfy and show the number of satellites available.
Damn it's cdma... no GSM

Activate GPS on HTC Touch Dual (Bell Moblility NEON400)
Is there built in GPS in HTC Touch Dual from Bell Mobility? No you say? Think again!!
CNET ASIA was probably talking about the GSM version of the HTC Touch Dual, however the HTC website also makes no mention of this capability.

HOW TO ACTIVATE GOOGLE MAPS ON YOUR BELL MOBILITY 1XEV HTC TOUCH DUAL and USE THE BUILT IN GPS
================================================== ===========================
1) Enable the GPS: START:SETTINGSERSONALHONE:SERVICES:LOCATION SETTING:GET SETTINGS:ON
2) Install Microsoft Active Sync (From the CD that came with the phone) and configure as follows:
FILE:CONNECTION SETTINGS:ALLOW USB CONNECTIONS=>CHECK/ (yes)
THIS COMPUTER IS CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET/ (yes)
OPEN ACTIVE SYNC WHEN MY DEVICE CONNECTS/ (yes)
ALLOW WIRELESS CONNECTION ON DEVICE WHEN CONNECTED To DESKTOP => UNCHECK (in other words, no. Big money saving tip here)
3) Connect the Touch Dual to the PC using the USB Data Cable and let it be installed by Windows (e.g. Allow USB enumeration sequence to complete)
4) START:SETTINGS:CONNECTIONS:USB TO PC:ACTIVE SYNC:ENABLE ADVANCED NETWORK => UNCHECK
5) START:INTERNET EXPLORER => m.google.com/maps (click on download link)
6) Download and install Google Maps (hint select "open" after selecting to download Google maps)
7) Get out in the open sky, or at least on the top floor of your house but keep the laptop connected to the HTC Touch Dual for now (and also keep it connected to the internet)
8) START:SETTINGS:SYSTEM:EXTERNAL GPSROGRAMS:GPS PROGRAM PORT:COM 3 4800
9) START:SETTINGS:SYSTEM:EXTERNAL GPS:HARDWARE:GPS HARDWARE PORT:NONE
10) START:SETTINGS:SYSTEM:EXTERNAL GPS:ACESS:Manage GPS Automatically => CHECKED
11) In Google Maps: MENU:USE GPS also MENU:OPTIONS:GPS SETTINGS:COM 3 4800
You will see Google Maps get a global position lock, and plot your position on the map. VERY COOL!!!!
Now you can disconnect from the USB Cable and the map will update automatically as you move around (Using your wireless data connection of course - cha ching!)
Handy tips:
a) Instead of downloading the CAB files to your smart phone which is a PITA to type the URLs, instead download them to your laptop then use the file explorer in Active Sync to drop them into your "My Documents" folder on the phone. Then double click from the phone on the CAB file to install it.
b) Don't forget to delete the CAB file from My Documents after the install to free up precious room.
c) Possibly avoid applications that require you to update dotNET framework. It is humungaloid and updating it might mess up your ROM. Install them and if they complain about dot net uninstall them. (IMHO, your mileage may vary)
d) TurboGPS is a good app for checking if the GPS is working and seeing the satellites in real time and space, and also for recording your track and making KML files to put into Google Earth later:
www.turboirc.com/tgps/
e) This seems to be an excellent website for application software for this and related (by OS) SmartPhones. For example here is a search of that site for GPS apps sorted by rating:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-tag-gps-1-rating.html
Oh baby...oh baby...oh baby...oh
Using GPS as in the last post, ISN'T using GPS. Google maps is one of the only apps that triangulates your "approximate" position through your wireless connection. The app has to support that function though based on where you are as not every tower has the necessary hardware to provide the needed information to the Google application. I haven't seen anyone satisfactoraly describe what a-GPS is so... it means that whether there is an internal or external GPS radio, the GPS positioning is "assisted" by the phone being triangulated through the network/towers. It only really comes into play when GPS signal is very weak (and is almost always transparent to the user). The overseas Dual (Niki 100) does not have built-in GPS. The US version of the Dual (Neon 300) does not have built-in GPS. Not sure about the 400 (Nike 400 or Neon 400?). I've never heard of the Nike 400, but I have heard of the Neon 400 which did have built-in GPS. Hope this helps...
I have confirmed that this works with my Neon400 CDMA for real GPS, NOT ASSISTED GPS as posted by dezurita.
I used com4 (personal preference I guess)
I have my Baud Rate set to 9600 (step 11 suggests 4800). I haven't confirmed that this works any better or worse
I did not need to do step 4
A fix to step 8 though is there is no baud setting on that page
On a side note; Since I'm using Windows Vista, I don't use ActiveSync... I use Windows Mobile Device Center.
You can make the same settings as step 2 by opening up the WMDC -> Mobile Device Settings -> Connection Settings
im trying this on my Neon400 but so far is unsuccessfully, maybe im doing this wrong some how....
in Google maps-Menu-GPS settings do i have to set Set manually or managed by windows?
thanks.
Use Turbo GPS to see satellite status
Hi Stutunaru,
Use turbogps to see the satellite status. That way you can be certain that you are getting actual satellite data.
For google maps, (and everything else) use the "managed by windows" setting for the GPS data.
MENU:OPTIONS:GPS SETTINGS:MANAGED BY WINDOWS
My previous step 11 was incorrect. My bad.
Hi Dezurita,
Ditto
Hi Glotsapot,
You are correct. The corrected step 8 is:
START:SETTINGS:SYSTEM:EXTERNAL GPSROGRAMS:GPS PROGRAM PORT:COM 3:HARDWARE:GPS HARDWARE PORT NONE: BAUD: 4800
However, I don't think this step is even required unless you have an external GPS device. So step 8 may be skipped altegether since the HTC TOUCH DUAL has an internal GPS Radio Rxcvr.
Regarding setp 4. I use Active Sync to get info from Google Maps like bus schedules or guide info, or the location of all my buddies on latitude, or to update my location on latitude. Then I disconnect from the web (unplug the USB cable from my PC and break the Active Sync connection). Actually I have pretty much stopped using Google maps now except latitude, since to be really helpful it requires a full time internet connection.
Instead, I have installed Garmin XT along witht he NA 2010 North America City Navigator map set. (I bought an 8GB Micro SD card from FS for $25 to store the maps). Also you can download speed camera data from Trapster.com.
This is a serious killer app. And NO SERVICE CHARGES for turn-by-turn directions. Typing letters on the Garmin works with your fingers if in landscape display mode.
Oh baby! oh baby! oh baby! oh!
My only regret is no Wi-Fi. If I had Wi-Fi I could update Latitude whenever in Wi-Fi range - for free. I hate to be so friggin' cheap, but that is what I do best.
Oh, and a full querty keyboard. That would be nice. So if I was to do it over, I would probably get HTC Touch Diamond (for Wi-Fi and virtual keyboard) or the HTC Touch Pro with the full physical qwerty keyboard. But I would buy only after I install Turbo GPS and confirm I can see the satellites. (ie Confirm that the GPS Rxcvr has not been artificially cripppled)

[Q] WM5 Universal BT DUN Ubuntu Not Working

Can't get it working, with PPP plugin for Blueman, it delivers a CONNECT 750000 or there abouts, but says CONNECT expected, and fails. Does not work with NDUN plugin. This is strange as an ZTE F107 dials fine. Except after trying the HTC Universal (o2 wm5 on 3 uk), and then it needs a restart of the netbook to be able to get passed the modem time out, not handled by networkmanager, and port in use messages. Even deleting the device and repairing does not work.
In some senses this is not too bad, as I was thinking of using a magic multiSIM, which using the old A38 (iirc) code, is useless in europe, but it does have a large phonebook capacity for backup of numbers, and then switch off the UMTS/GSM radio. I even think the ZTE F107 makes a more power efficient DUN for it when needed, and so means just running the bluetooth, anyhow, and making it a plain old organizer.
* How much power does switching off the 3G radio save?
I have installed the psidoc sdhc patch (after finding the regular sdhc patch did not work), and wm5torage for an 8gb SD. For mobile file transfer.
Some good news is that the new version of http://www.spactime.us spacetime mathematics 4 (v5-1) now no longer needs registration ('tis free), and a sort of sync with google calendar via the netbook is possible.

Does A500 support 3G connection?

I bought my a500 in Bangkok. I've heard lots of reports saying that this device doesn't support 3g and it was marked "32g wifi" when I bought it, so I naturally assume it doesn't support 3g connection. However, I find out that the sim card slot does exist besides the micro SD slot, it's just covered by the warranty label.
Does this mean that a500 actually supports 3g connection? If yes, anybody knows how to activate it? I didn't find any option in setting to turn data service on.
A500 with 3g will be the coolest device!
unfortunately according to what i read on the web this model does not support 3G nor does the USB host support a 3G modem;
there is a new model coming out though that does have 3G enabled.
It's pretty clear on the box, manual and specs - WiFi.
USB wimax modem?
Does it support usb Wimax modems?
AFAIK, it does not natively support USB modems.

Don't try to insert a sim card in the slot. Reviews have pointed out that the in the wifi only version the 3g sim slot has NO workings, it's just a big hole down which your sim will vanish, never to be seen again, in addition to this, it will rattle around behind the screen, possibly messing up the internals.
!!!!!!!RESIST THE URGE!!!!!!!
it's impossible that the A500 support 3G natively because the HARDWARE is not here... if you open the device you will see that the
- card reader is missing
- the pcie 3G card is missing
- the pcie slot is missing
- the microchips and resistor are missing
For all the 3G system.
A501 will be the 3G version
A500 is wifi only
32G = 32 GigaBytes and not somehow 3G/2G
zhengyu. where and when did you bought it ?
Mobile Expo or Commart ?
The W500 support 3G modem since it's a windows system.
and the N500 at pantip I really doesn't know what that model does maybe it's the name we give for the 16G version
555, su su.
you can use a phone and tether by wifi or buy a mifi-30 from iFox I think you can got one on 4th floor at pantip plaza
could you maybe explain how to open the device? i would like to have a look at the ssd and if i can replace it with a bigger one or with a hdd...

The internal storage isn't an SSD, it's flash modules soldered directly to the motherboard, so no user upgrade on the internal storage. Well, theoretically you could possibly upgrade the flash modules themselves, if you're really REALLY careful and have access to that kind of hardware
Thankfully, since you bought the Acer, you have a full-sized USB2.0 host port on the tablet itself, so you can plug in a nice multi-terabyte external HDD if you really need that much storage. May need to check out this link in the Dev section if you want to plug in an NTFS-formatted USB drive though.
Thanks !!
When I plugged in my cell phone, I see a /dev/ttyACM0 device show up. PPP seems to be also present on the system along with 'chat'. These are the pieces that enable a cell modem connection. So I think eventually someone will be able to tether to their phone or USB modem.
alright, according to varius posts, this "slot" propably is only a black hole
I will not try to insert a sim card any more
Pity on the pad, hope that Acer will have an upgrade plan
all the 3G talk should be close to solved this way.. read this post, and you can use huawei dongle's for 3G now.. it works fine here.. and is fast!
ZTE MF668a
I'm working with Thor rom v14.2 and 3g path.
Folowing the instructions for connecting the modem, finaly I get
- phone coverage in the icon of the task bar,
- I can acces APN's in settings, register my conection with the provider ...
- and the ligths of the modem are OK (blue indicating 3g coverage)
But when I run in terminal ppp-start.sh the messages are:
# su
# ppp-start.sh
inserting modules
insmod: can't open 'system/lib/modules/usb_wwan.ko'
insmod: init_module 'system/lib/modules/option.ko' failed (File exists)
starting pppd
but nothing happes with the connection
I've search for the modules and usb_wwan is not there but option.ko is in the correct place.
Is the modem the problem?
Have I to edit the 3g file?
I think the error is before of 3g file is launched.
Thanks a lot for all the good work eveybody is doing.
I confirm, A500 working like a charm with 3G USB dongle.
I use Taboonay ROM with huawei 3G stick and it's perfect !!!

noticed the browser is faster really, on Xda is really a big difference.
noticed the wallpaper picker is better, showing a kind of frame (visibility of the picture on the desktops)
noticed the wifi icons show now the traffic (2 little arrow up and down)
noticed charging battery bugs gone (now updated as should be, no more 1% and unplug and see 100%)
noticed resizable widget (mail, calendar...)
noticed widget weather updated and fixed, now the city is not crop anymore.
noticed a smooth improvement of speed when using globally.
Bugs from old and new
- no auto update of the sdcard content when plugin...
- a small weird bug (text) on the status appear (I got a thai character hahah)
- have to clean data and force stop the ACER CONTENT application, to can launch them (one time only)
Looks good. Thanks for the pictures. Has anyone in the US tried 3.1 with a Verizon aircard? I would like to know if it works OK. Thanks.
Hey is the cell standby still present? It was rumored that this issue will be fixed with update

I have the same modem, but I want to know if 3.1 supports it directly plugged into the USB port. It would be nice to have native 3G support and then I can downgrade my phone to being a phone. Right now I use it as a wireless hotspot to access the Internet when away from the house. Take care.

That would be nice, though I can't imagine how fast the battery on the A500 would drain down powering the USB modem at the same time...
That said, this router is really good. Wireless N support, battery operation for 2 hours if needed. Also can be used to make a hotspot with any other USB stick or even share out a DSL or other wired LAN. Well worth the $50 I paid for it.
Thanks for the pics.
Does 3.1 have Handwriting Input for Traditional Chinese? Can you look under the XT9 input settings?
Interesting how the kernel version is still the same.

Hi,
yes, cell standby is still visible.
Christian
I doubt that CELL Standby use that much battery that people think...
my tablet stand for 8 hours (average time) with regular usage, wifi on, and play game as well...
Watching a movie : 2hrs use arround 20% of battery before the update so I can watch plenty of movie (10 hours roughtly)

Adding dongle support

Hi All,
Im hoping someone can help. I have looked around these forums and been trawling the internet in search on an answer to the following with very little luck.
I have a Karbonn Smart Tab 1 with the following specs.
SIM: 2G, 3G
3G enabled: yes
Screen size: 17.8 cm
Screen quality: Capacitive 5 Point Multi Touch Screen
Processor: 1.2 GHz
OS: Android v4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
Primary camera: 2 MP Front Camera
Expandable Memory up to 32 GB
Full HD Video Playback up to 1080p
Color: Silver grey back and black sides
Its a very nice little tablet for the price you pay.
The problem im having is connecting my Huawei E173 dongle.
When i plug it in all i get is the storage registering and thats it.
I have contacted the manufacturer to ask which dongles are support and non of them are available to me (problems of living in Zimbabwe)
My questions is:
What is the best way to build in support for this device on my Karbonn?
Is it something a noob (like my self can do).
I did use Free BSD about 6 years ago but have had little interaction with Linux / unix since then.
Any help would be appreciated.

Why do you need the 3G Dongle when your tablet got 3G support already built in?

The 3G is provided by a list of supported dongles and not (unfortunately) by a sim card slot.

Ah, ok. Confusing spec.
In general, implementing support for a new dongle is quite complicated require a new Linux kernel build, re-flashing the tablet etc. Not very noob friendly at all.
But if you are very lucky, your tablet already got the required drivers compiled into the kernel. The trick is that the kernel can't see the 3G modem as is right now. This is because it is identifying itself as a storage device, and not a modem. In the dongle there's a software switch you need to turn, changing it from storage device to modem. Try flipping it, and see if the kernel and the rest of the table accepts it.
You need a software to flip this switch you'll have to download and compile. You able to compile native code for your tablet?
You find the software here: http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/
Edit: You are in luck. there's a pre-compiled binary for ARM at the same site. http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/usb_modeswitch-1.1.9-arm-static.bz2
Edit2: You want to read this as well I just stumbled upon: http://iamswagat.blogspot.in/2012/05/configure-funbook-to-use-any-dongle-and.html
