Adding dongle support - Networking

Hi All,
Im hoping someone can help. I have looked around these forums and been trawling the internet in search on an answer to the following with very little luck.
I have a Karbonn Smart Tab 1 with the following specs.
SIM: 2G, 3G
3G enabled: yes
Screen size: 17.8 cm
Screen quality: Capacitive 5 Point Multi Touch Screen
Processor: 1.2 GHz
OS: Android v4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
Primary camera: 2 MP Front Camera
Expandable Memory up to 32 GB
Full HD Video Playback up to 1080p
Color: Silver grey back and black sides
Its a very nice little tablet for the price you pay.
The problem im having is connecting my Huawei E173 dongle.
When i plug it in all i get is the storage registering and thats it.
I have contacted the manufacturer to ask which dongles are support and non of them are available to me (problems of living in Zimbabwe)
My questions is:
What is the best way to build in support for this device on my Karbonn?
Is it something a noob (like my self can do).
I did use Free BSD about 6 years ago but have had little interaction with Linux / unix since then.
Any help would be appreciated.

Why do you need the 3G Dongle when your tablet got 3G support already built in?

No sim card slot

The 3G is provided by a list of supported dongles and not (unfortunately) by a sim card slot.

Ah, ok. Confusing spec.
In general, implementing support for a new dongle is quite complicated require a new Linux kernel build, re-flashing the tablet etc. Not very noob friendly at all.
But if you are very lucky, your tablet already got the required drivers compiled into the kernel. The trick is that the kernel can't see the 3G modem as is right now. This is because it is identifying itself as a storage device, and not a modem. In the dongle there's a software switch you need to turn, changing it from storage device to modem. Try flipping it, and see if the kernel and the rest of the table accepts it.
You need a software to flip this switch you'll have to download and compile. You able to compile native code for your tablet?
You find the software here: http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/
Edit: You are in luck. there's a pre-compiled binary for ARM at the same site. http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/usb_modeswitch-1.1.9-arm-static.bz2
Edit2: You want to read this as well I just stumbled upon: http://iamswagat.blogspot.in/2012/05/configure-funbook-to-use-any-dongle-and.html

Networking Gurus, is this possible??

HI,
Ok, on my way back from Blockbuster I was taxing the ole cognitive faculties and, being the cheap b*stard I am, thought of a possible way of gaining free internet access on the move. Here is my idea.
Using a Orange UK Pay as You Go sim in a GSM data card hooked up to my main PC at home with full access to High Speed internet. I set up a RAS server, add this number to my Magic Numbers and dial in for remote access and iNet connection. Of course if this is possible compression could be used before IP packets are routed to the mobile device improving, what I assume to be, a lousy bandwidth.
Further questions related to this:
What is the available bandwidth of a GSM data call?
Do Orange allow data calls on non-contract numbers, and are Orange able to detect that a line is being used for data rather than voice? And, if yes to the latter, can a data call masquerade as a voice?
Are there any good compression clients for Windows Mobile?
Being stuck with GPRS/EDGE on my VOX the data plans are diabolical, now I have a eee pc I'm kinda getting these two devices to dance together as best they can for the ultimate mobile experience, and if this theory is plausible and with performance comparable to GPRS, then I think im on to something worth while for my self and others.
Any response is appreciated
not sure if it's possible
but data gsm is only 9600
Unfortunately I don't have any concrete answers for you, but I'm thinking about picking up an EEE PC as well, and this is an absolutely FANTASTIC idea. I'm extremely interested in how this project fares for you. When it comes to phone networks, I'm still a noob, but I've been administering a satellite network for a few years, and based on the networking experience i've gotten in that short time, what you propose seems entirely possible. The biggest issue that I think you're going to run into is getting the compression to work properly. I'm worried that it will impede the processing performance of the phone. I think you may have better luck finding a packetshaper for the EEE rather than your WM device.
On a side note, what distro of Linux do those run? i've been looking around, and havn't been able to find out if it's Ubuntu, RedHat, anything. Everything I find just says 'Linux'. Also, have you been able to easily pair your phone to the EEE? I'm running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn on my desktop and I can't get anything out of the USB connection. (I know this is off-topic of your original post, and i apologize, but please PM me if you, or anyone else, have any suggestions. [i've searched forums for some suggestions, havn't worked out] Thanks.)
Good Luck!
Ok thanks all for the response, im going to post info etc. as and when I find it.
Here is general GSM info that confirms and elaberates on Rudegar's post
http://www.tml.tkk.fi/Studies/Tik-110.300/1998/Newtech/fast_gsm_2.html
in brief, using compression 'up to 36000 bps' can be acheived, which is sufficient for Image free web-surfing courtesy of Opera and telnet. Moreover, the article referenced is fairly old and I imagine DUN compression algorythms have come on leaps and bounds, especially since the broadband revolution. I think you're right in suggesting that decompression may tax my Vox, I will use the VOX as modem either over USB or BT. Next I will research compression, keep you all posted.
As for the EEE, well I am totally in love with mine. The stock Eee comes with Xandros a flavour of Linux that I found to be quite bitter. I am currently using XPTablet Edition. I have tried Ubuntu, gOS, eeexubuntu and couldn't deal with the inability to upscale the resolution so I went Windows. Now I can scale 900x600 without any glitches. I have modified my 4g with a touchscreen, 2 gigs of RAM in the post, all I need now is a way of fitting an Xscale PPC sisterboard and the HTC Shift can suck my.......
My only advice is DON'T GET a eee pc 2G, as you will only regret it.... I did!
Oh... I think you'd have to recompile your kernel to get some kind of activesync replacment. I've seen the answer somewhere on my travels--probably www.Eeeuser.com or www.ubuntu.com--If i find it again ill let you know.
Whilst browsing for a cheap GSM modem I came across the Three Pay 3G modem reduced to £69 from Ebuyer. Of course I bought one on the spot--perhaps I'm not such a cheap b*stard after all. For this reason this little project is now less of a necessity. I will be using a VPN of some kind but I doubt that it will be of much relevance to this post. If I do stumble on anything of interest I will post. As the modem has 2G capabilities I will test a few dialin setups.

Air card is it possible

let me first start off by telling you that in no way shape or form am I skilled enough to be a developer nor am I asking the deleloper with the skill to take this on. I have searched a few forum and I really can't find any info about this subject.
I have a siearra wireless card USB598 the service is provided by Sprint, Does anyone know if it would be possible to make this work on the gtab? Or is it even possible to make it work in an android system?
When I plug the card in it powers up and seems to be doing what the card does but like you could guess it does nothing else. I didn't expect it to do anything else but I didn't think it would even power on.
I am not a developer either, but off the top of my head (devs feel free to correct me):
You would need drivers for the AirCard (no idea, but maybe the Linux drivers [if they are made for the card might work])
You would also need some sort of software to have the AirCard connect to the mobile network and to have the GTab use the Aircard as a means of communication

I have an air-card, as well. It's on my list of to do's but it will be tricky at best.
I had a sierra air-card a few years back, and got it to work with Ubuntu using some ppp commands. I figure that would be the most likely route in Android, since it has some *nix similarities, but I haven't gotten very far.
If you look at "dmesg", your card might be loading up. But the problem is actually getting old modems commands to it to get it running. I think.

YES! Sprint Overdrive 4G! WooHoo!
It'd be a lot easier to try one of the 3G/4G-to-local wireless "boxes" available through many wireless providers (I use MyWi on my jailbroken iPhone 3GS though I'm looking into clear.com's service on the go). That way not only your GTablet, but your laptop and other devices can connect to the same connection and even your friends.
The air card is provided by my employer so I'm kind of stuck with it and getting into a myfi device isn't an option.
It's not really a huge issue I can always tether to my phone, It would just be nice to pop in the card and be up and running. The card also has gps built into it and I could see some use in that too.
I think drivers are going to be the biggest issue the MFG only supports MS and MAC, but there are some threads out on the web were people have gotten them to work in ubuntu. Beyond the driver issue there still needs to be some type of dialing software. On a windows box you can use a simple dialing software and dial a #77 and it will connect.
One other thing that this card has the ability to do is NDIS where the card becomes a network card and as soon as it's inserted into a pc it connects automatically but I'm almost 100% sure that it is still software based.
Thanks for the feed back.

For the ZT-180 tablets we got a number of these going as they looked like serial modem interfaces using ppp via the USB (might need to turn off/disable) any builtin diskstore... there sometimes required a build.prop edit to set the tty correct... I'd normally say look over on Slatedroid at our zt180 section as there were a few threads for different 3G dongles but mostly similar instructions... except slatedroid's been bottom up the last 30 or so hours... the zt-180 thread here is HUGE but I suspect you could find most of the same info scattered throughtout there also as maybe a starting point...
Novatel Ovation U727
The Ovation U727 supports Linux in addition to Windows & MAC. Data sheet indicates it has built in GPS-A in addition to 3G. Anyone tried one of these? I might get a used one & give it a try.

Does A500 support 3G connection?

I bought my a500 in Bangkok. I've heard lots of reports saying that this device doesn't support 3g and it was marked "32g wifi" when I bought it, so I naturally assume it doesn't support 3g connection. However, I find out that the sim card slot does exist besides the micro SD slot, it's just covered by the warranty label.
Does this mean that a500 actually supports 3g connection? If yes, anybody knows how to activate it? I didn't find any option in setting to turn data service on.
A500 with 3g will be the coolest device!
unfortunately according to what i read on the web this model does not support 3G nor does the USB host support a 3G modem;
there is a new model coming out though that does have 3G enabled.
It's pretty clear on the box, manual and specs - WiFi.
USB wimax modem?
Does it support usb Wimax modems?
AFAIK, it does not natively support USB modems.

Don't try to insert a sim card in the slot. Reviews have pointed out that the in the wifi only version the 3g sim slot has NO workings, it's just a big hole down which your sim will vanish, never to be seen again, in addition to this, it will rattle around behind the screen, possibly messing up the internals.
!!!!!!!RESIST THE URGE!!!!!!!
it's impossible that the A500 support 3G natively because the HARDWARE is not here... if you open the device you will see that the
- card reader is missing
- the pcie 3G card is missing
- the pcie slot is missing
- the microchips and resistor are missing
For all the 3G system.
A501 will be the 3G version
A500 is wifi only
32G = 32 GigaBytes and not somehow 3G/2G
zhengyu. where and when did you bought it ?
Mobile Expo or Commart ?
The W500 support 3G modem since it's a windows system.
and the N500 at pantip I really doesn't know what that model does maybe it's the name we give for the 16G version
555, su su.
you can use a phone and tether by wifi or buy a mifi-30 from iFox I think you can got one on 4th floor at pantip plaza
could you maybe explain how to open the device? i would like to have a look at the ssd and if i can replace it with a bigger one or with a hdd...

sanaell, could you link the device you mentioned for 3g via usb please... I assume this would be to tether to 3g phone???
Also is there anyway to tether via bluetooth that you are aware of. I would like to tether to my bberry curve 3g when I have no wifi available...
thanks,

The internal storage isn't an SSD, it's flash modules soldered directly to the motherboard, so no user upgrade on the internal storage. Well, theoretically you could possibly upgrade the flash modules themselves, if you're really REALLY careful and have access to that kind of hardware
Thankfully, since you bought the Acer, you have a full-sized USB2.0 host port on the tablet itself, so you can plug in a nice multi-terabyte external HDD if you really need that much storage. May need to check out this link in the Dev section if you want to plug in an NTFS-formatted USB drive though.
Thanks !!
When I plugged in my cell phone, I see a /dev/ttyACM0 device show up. PPP seems to be also present on the system along with 'chat'. These are the pieces that enable a cell modem connection. So I think eventually someone will be able to tether to their phone or USB modem.
alright, according to varius posts, this "slot" propably is only a black hole
I will not try to insert a sim card any more
Pity on the pad, hope that Acer will have an upgrade plan
all the 3G talk should be close to solved this way.. read this post, and you can use huawei dongle's for 3G now.. it works fine here.. and is fast!
ZTE MF668a
I'm working with Thor rom v14.2 and 3g path.
Folowing the instructions for connecting the modem, finaly I get
- phone coverage in the icon of the task bar,
- I can acces APN's in settings, register my conection with the provider ...
- and the ligths of the modem are OK (blue indicating 3g coverage)
But when I run in terminal ppp-start.sh the messages are:
# su
# ppp-start.sh
inserting modules
insmod: can't open 'system/lib/modules/usb_wwan.ko'
insmod: init_module 'system/lib/modules/option.ko' failed (File exists)
starting pppd
but nothing happes with the connection
I've search for the modules and usb_wwan is not there but option.ko is in the correct place.
Is the modem the problem?
Have I to edit the 3g file?
I think the error is before of 3g file is launched.
Thanks a lot for all the good work eveybody is doing.
I confirm, A500 working like a charm with 3G USB dongle.
I use Taboonay ROM with huawei 3G stick and it's perfect !!!

No hotspot for DVP?

If this is to be believed the DVP will not be able to be used as a wifi hotspot. Havent had a need for this so far, but anyone else wanted this feature?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1280623
It would have been nice to have. It appears as though composite mode is working again after the mango update (coming from beta). So long as I can at least have wired tethering I am happy. Haven't tested it yet though.
More importantly though, it could also mean we can't access hidden wifi networks. That is just pants on head retarded.
Edit: I can confirm usb tethering is working again.
Yeah, it's the feature I miss most from my Android and Blackberry.

Yes - disappointed that the wifi hotspot functionality isn't possible on the DVP. Would have been a useful feature on occasions.
Re: hidden wifi, the other XDA thread says that the chipset used in the DVP is the Broadcom 4325.
According to the website below, the iPod touch 2nd Generation also used the Broadcom 4325.

iPod touch 2nd Generation seems to have been able to connect to hidden SSID (see below).

[Q] How to tweak JB to see internet connection?

Hi all, my tablet don't have build-in SIM card reader, but do have 3G capabilities - though only for a short list of modems. My Nokia cs-19 USB modem is not on that list, so I have(together with Josh from http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/bb/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1563&p=10642#p10642 ) managed to get the modem working, for browsing.
The remaining problem is that though I can browse the web and browse Play store - I can't download from Play store.
I get the "Waiting for network" error that many on Sprint and 4G has gotten before, the diffence here is that I'm using 3G and that though I have an internet connection, JB repports "No internet connection" in status bar.
So my question is if its possible to force JB to see the connection, or think its always online?
Data on the tablet:
Android 4.1.1 JB Kernel 3.4.0+ Build number Cherry_A610_V2
1Ghz A9 Quadcore Action ATM7029 Cpu
Vivante GC1000+ QuadCore Gpu
7" HD IPS 5pt. Capacitive touch panel WXGA 1280x800
Micro SD slot for card up to 32GB
8GB Nand Flash instead of 16GB
1GB Ram
Wifi
Micro USB 2.0
VGA front camera, 2MP back camera
Super HD 2160p
4000mAh battery
3G support through dongle
Play store 4.2.3(already tried all the wiping cache tricks and reverting to older versions). With 4.2.3 "Waiting for network" changed to "downloading" but nothing happens.
The tablet is rooted!
with kind regards
JBJ
PS: if you have the RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error don't wipe your cache it will break Play store - just remove your google account and open Play store, then login with existing account - now it works and you can download and update again. Worked for me on wi-fi, not my usb(special problem).
search for "autopatcher" they have 3g dongle features for baking into roms. Also they have openpdroid, which lets you force online state to applications.
Tablet died after 4 months use, I have a new one now - different hw and brand and it worked out of the box.
