let me first start off by telling you that in no way shape or form am I skilled enough to be a developer nor am I asking the deleloper with the skill to take this on. I have searched a few forum and I really can't find any info about this subject.
I have a siearra wireless card USB598 the service is provided by Sprint, Does anyone know if it would be possible to make this work on the gtab? Or is it even possible to make it work in an android system?
When I plug the card in it powers up and seems to be doing what the card does but like you could guess it does nothing else. I didn't expect it to do anything else but I didn't think it would even power on.
I am not a developer either, but off the top of my head (devs feel free to correct me):
You would need drivers for the AirCard (no idea, but maybe the Linux drivers [if they are made for the card might work])
You would also need some sort of software to have the AirCard connect to the mobile network and to have the GTab use the Aircard as a means of communication

I have an air-card, as well. It's on my list of to do's but it will be tricky at best.
I had a sierra air-card a few years back, and got it to work with Ubuntu using some ppp commands. I figure that would be the most likely route in Android, since it has some *nix similarities, but I haven't gotten very far.
If you look at "dmesg", your card might be loading up. But the problem is actually getting old modems commands to it to get it running. I think.

YES! Sprint Overdrive 4G! WooHoo!
It'd be a lot easier to try one of the 3G/4G-to-local wireless "boxes" available through many wireless providers (I use MyWi on my jailbroken iPhone 3GS though I'm looking into clear.com's service on the go). That way not only your GTablet, but your laptop and other devices can connect to the same connection and even your friends.
The air card is provided by my employer so I'm kind of stuck with it and getting into a myfi device isn't an option.
It's not really a huge issue I can always tether to my phone, It would just be nice to pop in the card and be up and running. The card also has gps built into it and I could see some use in that too.
I think drivers are going to be the biggest issue the MFG only supports MS and MAC, but there are some threads out on the web were people have gotten them to work in ubuntu. Beyond the driver issue there still needs to be some type of dialing software. On a windows box you can use a simple dialing software and dial a #77 and it will connect.
One other thing that this card has the ability to do is NDIS where the card becomes a network card and as soon as it's inserted into a pc it connects automatically but I'm almost 100% sure that it is still software based.
Thanks for the feed back.

For the ZT-180 tablets we got a number of these going as they looked like serial modem interfaces using ppp via the USB (might need to turn off/disable) any builtin diskstore... there sometimes required a build.prop edit to set the tty correct... I'd normally say look over on Slatedroid at our zt180 section as there were a few threads for different 3G dongles but mostly similar instructions... except slatedroid's been bottom up the last 30 or so hours... the zt-180 thread here is HUGE but I suspect you could find most of the same info scattered throughtout there also as maybe a starting point...

The Ovation U727 supports Linux in addition to Windows & MAC. Data sheet indicates it has built in GPS-A in addition to 3G. Anyone tried one of these? I might get a used one & give it a try.

HI,
Ok, on my way back from Blockbuster I was taxing the ole cognitive faculties and, being the cheap b*stard I am, thought of a possible way of gaining free internet access on the move. Here is my idea.
Using a Orange UK Pay as You Go sim in a GSM data card hooked up to my main PC at home with full access to High Speed internet. I set up a RAS server, add this number to my Magic Numbers and dial in for remote access and iNet connection. Of course if this is possible compression could be used before IP packets are routed to the mobile device improving, what I assume to be, a lousy bandwidth.
Further questions related to this:
What is the available bandwidth of a GSM data call?
Do Orange allow data calls on non-contract numbers, and are Orange able to detect that a line is being used for data rather than voice? And, if yes to the latter, can a data call masquerade as a voice?
Are there any good compression clients for Windows Mobile?
Being stuck with GPRS/EDGE on my VOX the data plans are diabolical, now I have a eee pc I'm kinda getting these two devices to dance together as best they can for the ultimate mobile experience, and if this theory is plausible and with performance comparable to GPRS, then I think im on to something worth while for my self and others.
Any response is appreciated
not sure if it's possible
but data gsm is only 9600
Unfortunately I don't have any concrete answers for you, but I'm thinking about picking up an EEE PC as well, and this is an absolutely FANTASTIC idea. I'm extremely interested in how this project fares for you. When it comes to phone networks, I'm still a noob, but I've been administering a satellite network for a few years, and based on the networking experience i've gotten in that short time, what you propose seems entirely possible. The biggest issue that I think you're going to run into is getting the compression to work properly. I'm worried that it will impede the processing performance of the phone. I think you may have better luck finding a packetshaper for the EEE rather than your WM device.
On a side note, what distro of Linux do those run? i've been looking around, and havn't been able to find out if it's Ubuntu, RedHat, anything. Everything I find just says 'Linux'. Also, have you been able to easily pair your phone to the EEE? I'm running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn on my desktop and I can't get anything out of the USB connection. (I know this is off-topic of your original post, and i apologize, but please PM me if you, or anyone else, have any suggestions. [i've searched forums for some suggestions, havn't worked out] Thanks.)
Good Luck!
Ok thanks all for the response, im going to post info etc. as and when I find it.
Here is general GSM info that confirms and elaberates on Rudegar's post
http://www.tml.tkk.fi/Studies/Tik-110.300/1998/Newtech/fast_gsm_2.html
in brief, using compression 'up to 36000 bps' can be acheived, which is sufficient for Image free web-surfing courtesy of Opera and telnet. Moreover, the article referenced is fairly old and I imagine DUN compression algorythms have come on leaps and bounds, especially since the broadband revolution. I think you're right in suggesting that decompression may tax my Vox, I will use the VOX as modem either over USB or BT. Next I will research compression, keep you all posted.
As for the EEE, well I am totally in love with mine. The stock Eee comes with Xandros a flavour of Linux that I found to be quite bitter. I am currently using XPTablet Edition. I have tried Ubuntu, gOS, eeexubuntu and couldn't deal with the inability to upscale the resolution so I went Windows. Now I can scale 900x600 without any glitches. I have modified my 4g with a touchscreen, 2 gigs of RAM in the post, all I need now is a way of fitting an Xscale PPC sisterboard and the HTC Shift can suck my.......
My only advice is DON'T GET a eee pc 2G, as you will only regret it.... I did!
Oh... I think you'd have to recompile your kernel to get some kind of activesync replacment. I've seen the answer somewhere on my travels--probably www.Eeeuser.com or www.ubuntu.com--If i find it again ill let you know.
Whilst browsing for a cheap GSM modem I came across the Three Pay 3G modem reduced to £69 from Ebuyer. Of course I bought one on the spot--perhaps I'm not such a cheap b*stard after all. For this reason this little project is now less of a necessity. I will be using a VPN of some kind but I doubt that it will be of much relevance to this post. If I do stumble on anything of interest I will post. As the modem has 2G capabilities I will test a few dialin setups.
What is the best program out for this? i heard about wififofum and wmwifirouter
anyone actually use a program to do this now? which one are you using? and how well does it work?
I am going to be getting rid of my data card for my laptop with use of verizon's vzmanager.
Thanks to dcd, i love this phone, gps gets a lock in 5 seconds vs the ppckitchen.orgs builds.
now i just need this setup as a wifirouter and this 500.00 phone will pay for itself woop

I have never used WiFiFoFum, but I do use WMWIFIRouter all of the time. Works as promised and the Mogul even has decent transmitting range.
I have done speed tests with WMWIFIRouter and I still get 1.5mbps on speedtest.net
cool thanks! I am checking it out now. I am also checking out internet sharing, never figured out how it works but got it to work pretty easy
1.) soft reset
2.) goto internet sharing
3.) choose usb for pc connect (but dont plug in the usb cable yet) and choose data network connect
4.) pressed connect
5.) pluged in usb cable (status is now connected, the soft reset was the key)
gonna test out internet connection now.
but when u do this do u get hit with those god-awful charges from your service provider? i tried something like this once and sprint tried their hardest to hit me with all types of data charges and i have a data plan already!!!

I'm having a similar problem, trying to connect either my PSP or my laptop (with 802.11b only). After starting up WMWFR, it says connected and ready, but neither of my devices can find it (this is with the version of the app that was just posted last week.

apparently the PSP won't even connect with the commercial version, so never mind
plus, I think you might be exaggerating the "hundreds of thousands of hours" just a bit
WmWifiRouter
I've used WmWifiRouter for 8 months now, since close to its conception, and I can say without a doubt that I wouldn't try anything else. The new v1.2 will be coming out soon with the new core, which does not use the Internet Connection Sharing software with WM and makes it much faster and more stable. This is currently in beta testing, and will be released as a public beta in the next few weeks.
I have NEVER paid a tethering charge, and I can say it's well worth the small amount of money to get on board with this one.
WmWifiRouter works well, but it drains the battery very very.. fast via the WIFI...

Even if he only put 100,000 hours into it, this would mean he had a Windows Mobile 6 device with Wi-Fi back in 1997 and started work on it back then.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good app, and he DID put a lot of effort into it, but there is no need to worship him
oh right might not be hundreds of thousands of hours but I know he's put a ****load of time into the app. I'm not workshiping him but I know how hard he's worked to put out a good product
Newer version
I think the newer version of WMWiFiRouter permanently kills WiFi on my Titan. I've had to replace my Mogul twice, and it's worked before installing the proggy, never after. Even after a hard reset, or new ROM.
As there are already some prototype device owners here in the forum, I'd like to know something about the USB connectivity.
Is there a screen popping up when the device is connected to a USB port, asking the user to choose between "Mass storage access", "ActiveSync access" or "Internet connection sharing"?
I guess the HTC Touch Pro/Diamond is just doing that, but my old TyTN doesn't. I don't know if that is a WM6.1 feature or if it is a HTC feature or if SE implemented it on their own as well.
The only thing I know: I'd like to have that as well.
USB mass storage was supposed to be a built in feature of WM5, but perhaps manufacturers disabled it. On WM6 devices (maybe 5 too) there is a control panel called USB to PC. It allows you to choose the active sync mode (enable/disable advanced network mode). I saw a screen shot of the X1 USB to PC control panel. There was another option. It said Active sync (synchronize and internet access) or USB mass storage (faster file transfer).
Activesync always provided internet access and file transfer to internal storage or external card, but USB mass storage mode will be faster.
But ActiveSync internet access and ICS is something different.
ActiveSync internet access means that the PPC can connect through active sync (via PC) to the internet.
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) means that the PPC is providing Internet access to the PC via its own 3G connection (for example).
Ah, I misunderstood your question. Internet connection sharing (also called "tethering") is also available for any windows mobile device. You can do it with USB or bluetooth (with the PAN profile). I use my tilt for that sometimes. Even if it does not come installed on the device, there is a cab you can install it with.
Does it popup and ask you anytime you plug a pro/diamond in? That is HTC specific. Regular WinMo will not prompt you everytime you plug it in, but the functionality is there.

Yes, I think I've seen that on some video. I like the idea, because if I put my TyTN in the cradle in order to use ICS, I have to activate ICS in advance otherwise ActiveSync starts on the PC automatically and tries to synchronize.
It's not a big deal to stop ActiveSync put out the device of the cradle again and activate ICS, but it's nicer if the device would just ask what I intend to do.
Sometimes I'm not quick enough and synchronizing already started, so I have to wait until it's finished because I don't want to interrupt synchronization right in the middle of the process.

Yes, I almost thought so, because the screen looks very "TouchFlo 3D", but maybe SE has something similar implemented for the Xperia X1?

Thats interesting that HTC did that. Most carriers discourage you from tethering, or else want you to pay more. Thats one reason I like t-mo. I can tether with no extra fee (I know you can get away with it undetected for some carriers, but tmo allows it). I don't tether that often though, so it might be a tad annoying to be prompted all the time, unless you could disable the prompt. You probably can.
In Germany tethering is allowed by most of the carriers (depends on the data plan of course) and the 3G network with speeds up to 7,2 MBit/s downstream is pretty good concerning quality and coverage.
So I use that quite often with my laptop.
That's one of the main reasons why I skipped the Touch Pro and now go for the X1 - the Touch Pro has a lousy 3G reception and I really hope the X1 is better.
Prompting the user is okay for me (actually very much appreciated), because it happens only once when you connect it.

You actually wont need it. As I noted above the xperia has a checkbox for usb mass storage mode. The poster was asking about ICS though, not mass storage.

The US is sadly behind on cell networks. Not only network coverage and speeds but also in the sense that US carriers are so locked down and controlling.

No, at least in with the ROM that I have on my X1. There is no pop-up asking in which mode to connect the X1 to the PC.
Ah okay, thanks for your reply.
Well, then I have to deal with it like I already do with my TyTN.
A tethering/"Internet Connection Sharing" application is already included in the software, isn't it?
Yes, it is included.
I would not suggest - Xperia
I wouldn't suggest buying the Xperia. I used to be a pocket pc fan. I have the X7501 and HTC diamond. Recently I made the switch to iphone. Man this is iphone is simply amazing. Right now when I pick up my pocket pc again, everything seems so retarded and slow. Although there are functions missing from the iphone such as copy and paste as well as it cannot edit word or excel files, its not really that important anymore. Overall the user experience is simply fast and fantastic. Try it for yourself

Lol! There aren't just copy-paste functions missing from the iPhone... and i assume you haven't gotten around to installing a couple of applications from the AppStore yet? 'Cos the more apps you install, the more time it takes sometimes to load stuff such as Settings - but i'll admit overall it is really fast. After having used iPhone for more than a year, i consider it to be more of a non-professional phone, better yet an extreme success as an iPod Touch. Gaming on the iPhone is amazing, but SMS, and no editing support for office, and no video, and so on kill it big time.
My cousin has a HTC Diamond, and from the hours i spent on it, it was not as slow or *retarted* as people lead one to believe about WinMo devices. It definitely requires a getting used to period, 'cos you have to familiarize yourself with the Windows Mobile OS, but overall i believe it to be way better than iPhone. (Not in regards to games yet, though we'll see with time what kind of games hit the Diamond and Xperia)
Xperia's 384 MB will make it faster than most devices out there. Sure its panel interface might take up most of that memory, but the thing about WinMo devices is that you can turn off features as needed - and if in the end you find it slower that what you'd like (though i am 99.999% sure that won't be the case) then you can simply turn the feature off.
In short, iPhone and WinMo devices are two completely different things. iPhone has its advantages and WinMo has its advantages, and to me, sets such as HTC Touch HD, HTC Touch Diamond, and Sony Xperia are winners over the iPhone any day of the week. (heck even HTC G1 - the google phone - is considered better than iPhone)
Now in the end... i would just like to say, since you are driven away from WinMo devices, send me your X7501 for free...
Best Regards.

Oh NICE! Though I could have lived without it, it's better to have it.
My home wireless router and my PC are just close enough to connect, but the signal is a bit poor. Sure I could fix this in a whole number of ways, but I was wondering (as you do) could I use my X1 as an network extender? Essentially using it as a bridge between my PC and router to get a better signal?
Anyone know if any software of this nature has been developed?
yes and also as oven and fridge
i don't think is possible but anyway im not sure
thanks for the (not very) helpful reply. i know you can get software to turn the x1 into an access point (using the mobile connection for internet access) so im guessing its only one stage on from there to make the x1 perform the same functinality but connected to a wireless AP instead of the mobile networ kand thus acting as a bridge.
Why don't you buy an network bridge instead of using your phone as one. A cheaper one is no more than a SD card.
I don't know, but it's kinda dumb task to do for a phone... even if the phone is able to complete the task.

Because, as I said in my first post, there are loads of ways of solving this problem but I was wondering if it is possible and if anyone has done it.
Sure I could go out and do the boring thing and buy a bridge but then I would never gain any knowledge about the subject and engage in discussions with other people that think the same way.
You go ahead and solve your problems the easy way - by purchasing a mass made box. Me - I want to find out more about how things work and what is and isn't possible, not because it's the easiest or best solution, but because I like to learn.
Hi
I guess it could be possible theorically
im not in knowledge of any sw to do that
But anyway i think even if there is a sw the thing is that if you want it
just for fun is ok but using it as a real bridge it can drain the battery of X1 in few hours and the phone could get very hot ...
So maybe for practical use the box should be better
good luck

I bought my a500 in Bangkok. I've heard lots of reports saying that this device doesn't support 3g and it was marked "32g wifi" when I bought it, so I naturally assume it doesn't support 3g connection. However, I find out that the sim card slot does exist besides the micro SD slot, it's just covered by the warranty label.
Does this mean that a500 actually supports 3g connection? If yes, anybody knows how to activate it? I didn't find any option in setting to turn data service on.
A500 with 3g will be the coolest device!
unfortunately according to what i read on the web this model does not support 3G nor does the USB host support a 3G modem;
there is a new model coming out though that does have 3G enabled.
It's pretty clear on the box, manual and specs - WiFi.
USB wimax modem?
Does it support usb Wimax modems?
AFAIK, it does not natively support USB modems.

Don't try to insert a sim card in the slot. Reviews have pointed out that the in the wifi only version the 3g sim slot has NO workings, it's just a big hole down which your sim will vanish, never to be seen again, in addition to this, it will rattle around behind the screen, possibly messing up the internals.
!!!!!!!RESIST THE URGE!!!!!!!
it's impossible that the A500 support 3G natively because the HARDWARE is not here... if you open the device you will see that the
- card reader is missing
- the pcie 3G card is missing
- the pcie slot is missing
- the microchips and resistor are missing
For all the 3G system.

A500 is wifi only
32G = 32 GigaBytes and not somehow 3G/2G

sanaell, could you link the device you mentioned for 3g via usb please... I assume this would be to tether to 3g phone???
Also is there anyway to tether via bluetooth that you are aware of. I would like to tether to my bberry curve 3g when I have no wifi available...
thanks,

The internal storage isn't an SSD, it's flash modules soldered directly to the motherboard, so no user upgrade on the internal storage. Well, theoretically you could possibly upgrade the flash modules themselves, if you're really REALLY careful and have access to that kind of hardware
Thankfully, since you bought the Acer, you have a full-sized USB2.0 host port on the tablet itself, so you can plug in a nice multi-terabyte external HDD if you really need that much storage. May need to check out this link in the Dev section if you want to plug in an NTFS-formatted USB drive though.
Thanks !!
When I plugged in my cell phone, I see a /dev/ttyACM0 device show up. PPP seems to be also present on the system along with 'chat'. These are the pieces that enable a cell modem connection. So I think eventually someone will be able to tether to their phone or USB modem.
alright, according to varius posts, this "slot" propably is only a black hole
I will not try to insert a sim card any more
Pity on the pad, hope that Acer will have an upgrade plan
all the 3G talk should be close to solved this way.. read this post, and you can use huawei dongle's for 3G now.. it works fine here.. and is fast!
ZTE MF668a
I'm working with Thor rom v14.2 and 3g path.
Folowing the instructions for connecting the modem, finaly I get
- phone coverage in the icon of the task bar,
- I can acces APN's in settings, register my conection with the provider ...
- and the ligths of the modem are OK (blue indicating 3g coverage)
But when I run in terminal ppp-start.sh the messages are:
# su
# ppp-start.sh
inserting modules
insmod: can't open 'system/lib/modules/usb_wwan.ko'
insmod: init_module 'system/lib/modules/option.ko' failed (File exists)
starting pppd
but nothing happes with the connection
I've search for the modules and usb_wwan is not there but option.ko is in the correct place.
Is the modem the problem?
Have I to edit the 3g file?
I think the error is before of 3g file is launched.
Thanks a lot for all the good work eveybody is doing.
I confirm, A500 working like a charm with 3G USB dongle.
I use Taboonay ROM with huawei 3G stick and it's perfect !!!
