how to get screen replaced when cracked from dropping phone? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Ugh, it JUST happened.
To be specific, my screen is now completely unusable. The cracks are likely within the digitizer so nothing shows up properly.
I have no Sprint warranty on this phone, it's only a couple months old and sadly I bought it off of Craigslist to save a little money on the full price.
What should I do?

I went on ebay and got everything replaced with the exception of the motherboard for $155.
It's really easy to do yourself. YouTube, a screwdriver, and 7 screws.

That's the expensive route. If he didn't break his digitizer (screen is still responsive) then he can just replace the glass that should be about $50 and take about 15 mins to do.

Yeah. Check that video out on YouTube. It is not that easy. It should take 15 mins if you have done it before. You also run the risk if breaking the lcd in your attempt making the $50 purchase useless.
You have to use a heat gun to soften the very tough glue that holds the glass to the digitalizer and slowly and carefully pry them apart. Don't get glass on the lcd (scratches) and don't get fingerprints, lint, or hair on there either (pain to completely remove).
I'm actually really good at hardware repairs (prior Apple repair tech) and even that fix makes me uneasy, but it's your call.

So basically, I have no good options to get the digitizer repaired at a low cost other than to do it myself? What a waste of money this has been and now with repairs I'm bringing the cost back up to full retail price. This has been a bad day.

I actually bought my phone off of Amazon; and when I activated the phone through Sprint, I was able to put the mobile insurance on it. Maybe you can call Customer Care, and put the insurance on your device. Then take it into a corporate store, and they should exchange it.

@redchevy90 what do you mean by mobile insurance?

insurance
I mean the premium insurance that sprint has. Its like $7 or $9 a month, and it covers your device.

I just called in and they said I activated this phone ONE DAY over a month ago so they won't do it for me by phone. They said I could take my chances at the corporate store. If this works, I *could* actually get a free replacement. But the corporate store would have been nice enough to give it to me...

You dropped your phone, you broke it, they won't replace it. That is an Assurian claim if you had insurance, which by the way is $11 a month not $7. Plus you will have to pay a $150 deductible. Sounds like the cheapest route will be fixing it yourself and next time being more careful. What was suggested earlier is pure fraud and the reason why the insurance deductible keeps going up. Own up to your failings and fix it yourself instead of increasing the fees and deductibles for the rest if us.
Sent from my icrap 2 using Tapatalk HD

Yeah, forget the fraud option. Didn't fully understand what was going on with that anyway. I found someone semi-local who has an extra digitizer that I'll just pay for and repair myself. Life's a ***** but you suck it up and move on.

The phone is still new, but radio shack now fixes screens for around $70 I believe. That's lower than a deductible.

Radioshack charges $70 for select models, not the galaxy S4.
I happen to have a complete screen in exchange for a $150 "donation". I have plenty of feedback on here and i ship for free

I also have a cracked screen on my s4 and have talked to sprint about it.
Actuallly that $150 is what it was to replace the Galaxy s3.
They decided to go with $200 for the s4...

Where did you get everything but the motherboard for 155? Who was the seller?

just bought a used sph-l720 (sprint gs4 with good esn) on the cheap
the lcd dont display anything and the digitizer is cracked of course
when i do power the phone on i do hear the sounds and the bottom capacitance buttons light up
anyhow i been following taredown guides off youtube and to my understanding (as i sit hear with my phone mostly disassembled) is that the digitizer and lcd are actually one piece unlike the s3 and s2 and almost every other phone i have had in the past?
it looks like to me the lcd and digitzer use the same "one" connector that plugs in
the digitizer and lcd used to each have their own cable connectors
so what is this actually called? its not just a digitizer and its not just an lcd is it just now called the "screen" since they are both combined into one unit only?

no info from anyone on this?

replacement Epic

Ok so unfortunately my 2 week old epic 4g was ran over today. ruined the screen, back cover and the battery is bulged out. It still turns on but no display(can hear the phone boot up)
Question is. When I get the replaement will it have the battery cover and the battery? when I was with t-mobile they only sent you the bare phone and you had to use your old battery and battery cover.
I just got my replacement Epic today (screen separation) and it was just a bare phone.

crap, so what do I do?
I put on the insurance claim that It was ran over. But I didnt put anything else. It says it will be here tomorrow.
I would think with having to pay the 100 deductible that they would send you a brand new phone.
Why don't you call them and ask?

+1 it won't hurt to ask. if all else fails im sure you can find a cover for cheap on amazon or something like that.
was it an insurance claim(deductible) or you called Sprint for replacement under warranty(no deductible)?
the ins claims replacements are always 'complete' replacement, whereas the 'under-warranty' replacements are bare phone..at least from my experience. ymmv

I think it depends on the type of claim. I made an insurance claim on my Diamond because it got wet. They sent out a phone, battery, and charger (no back cover) and only asked I send the bare phone back. So I would definitely call them and make sure they know it's busted and you need the whole thing replaced.
Came home for lunch and the phone was here. Came complete just like I bought it in the store. All accessories and everything. Only came with a small pouch to put the old phone in so I am assuming I don't have to send my old accessories back. That was fast though as I filed the claim online yesterday around lunchtime and already got the new one.

Cracked Evo Screen

So yesterday at school, my friend bumped my arm by accident and my baby jumped out of my hands and then fell straight down on the screen. I watched the whole scene in slow motion . I had the phone without a case, because I like my phone naked, so even though this may be foolish, its just the way I like it.
I am aware that there are other threads about getting the phone screen repaired, but my situation is different. I know some people say to just buy a repair kit online for $20 and just do it yourself, but I had an online chat with sprint and the customer service rep told me that if I went to my local repair shop, they would charge me $35 for a new screen, and that if I contacted sprint they would reimburse me because I was a loyal customer.
Just in case of this being false, I took a screen shot of the chat. So today I went to the store, and they straight out told me that they do no do repairs, and that I could file a claim and pay $100 for a new phone. But I'm not interested in paying $100 for a phone that is 14 months old. So I was wondering is this just a situation at this store, or do all sprint stores reject cracked screen repairs. If the later is true than I will just need to buy the repair kit.
Thanks
Just means they don't do repairs there. Only certain stores have techs on site. Call Sprint and tell them you need repairs and ask what the closest repair center is from you.
However I have heard that sprint is no longer repairing screens. I don't know though.

Funny thing is, the sprint customer service rep clearly told me to go to the location I went to, and I went on the sprint site and looked at the list of locations and the location I went to was marked as a repair center.
And I was wondering about that, I hope not
Ehh I wouldn't bother with sprint and whatnot. If your LCD still lights up and colors are fine then you just need a new digitizer which last I saw I think you can get them for $10 just look up the evo teardown (ifixit.com) and look for the link for the digitizer or just google evo digitizer and you will see it. Really easy to replace. The ease of replacing and the cheep price is what made me decide to go case/screen protector less

That's the pic she sent...
After I repaired it I ruu it to OEM. It has a 2000mah battery and just been on my wifi. I think I had a 160 hour up and a 2 hour awake time lol

Okay, I guess I will do it my self. I just went looking on ifixit.com and couldn't find evo digitizer, looks like they were just selling parts for apple products. Also what should I look for when, trying to find a good quality digitizer. Do they sell name brand ones? Thanks
I bought my digitizer off Amazon for like $25. Just have to make sure the one you get is the one for your EVO. (Narrow and wide cable ribbon connectors). Be warned though, the glass doesn't pop out as easily as some of those videos make it seem. I had to pry mine out and messed up the LCD in the process.

I did this the first time. Before you remove the digitizer take a hair drier and heat up the digitizer to loosen the adhesive. And if u buy just that part do not try to remove the inside layer of film from the new digitizer....complete fail
I bought an Evo off of Craigslist, and dropped it less than 24 hours later. I tried to replace the screen with a new one, and completed messed my phone up. I took it like that, with an unscratched screen that wouldn't actually work, to a Sprint repair center. In two days they gave me a replacement for $35. Your mileage may vary, but I basically got a new phone for $135, including the original phone cost. So psyched!

[Q] broken screen

I dropped epic in parking lot and it shattered the screen. Bad day. So if anyone is selling one please let me know. I'd even take a bricked one. I just need a working screen. at this point I don't think it's worth it to use an upgrade on a epic 2.
i will be selling mine with broken screen and odined back to stock for $75 and my wife's which is on CM7 Nightly 45 for $200. I will give extra batteries (x2) and battery charger and a couple cheap plastic hard cases, screen protectors to anyone who buys both for $250.

I had one Epic they replaced for free with some small cracks in the screen. Second one dropped and hit face down on concrete, I had to pay $100 to get a new one to replace that, that was with insurance.
A while ago there was a discussion about screen replacements under TEP. Don't remember exact details but they would only replace for less than "x" inches scratch and fewer than "x" scratches which don't touch the edges..etc etc.
Shattered screen is not a manufacturing defect or normal wear and tear so insurance deductible makes sense.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I sent my daughter's Epic Touch Galaxy 2 whatever in to Samsung. They replaced the screen for $160 including UPS shipping both ways which was cheaper than a lot of places were selling the screen uninstalled for. I think they do the older phones cheaper though. You might try checking with them.
Its if the crack is under one inch. But with shattered screens, your only option is to do an insurance claim, pay the $100 deductible and get a new phone sent to you. Its quick easy and fast delivery.

The 35 dollar replacement is only for screen defects, it doesn't cover drops, or water damage... I got mine repaired for 35, but it was because the front camera had gone out, so it wasn't a drop or water.

Cracked camera glass...

Had my phone for about 2 hours when it fell out of my lap and about 16 inches to a hardwood floor...freaked out I checked screen and :good: nothing wrong, well I turned it over and the glass covering the camera is shattered, I think the camera broke the phones fall...the camera works fine its just the glass thats broken...anyone know of how to get replacement parts for that, Ive only found front glass/lcd screen replacements
thanks

The rear camera on this should be extremely easy to replace. You'll just have to wait a few more weeks until that part begins to make it's way out to us. You should be able to make the phone look just like new and it shouldn't cost more than $40 including tools.

Not good I can tell you.
The Display set will run about $100 by itself (And you do want the set not just the digitizer believe me)
The back alone with all antennas goes for over $50 USED.
You COULD replace the back glass with a new one but it does take some time and patience to remove the glass completely and the associated antennas carefully. The Back glass can be about $20 or so.
These are Ebay prices btw.
Selling one in your condition won't get you much either. The going rate is about $100 or less.
This is the problem: the phone is so cheap and the recient dump of people getting the "Next cool phone" has made resale of the N4 low. Sadly with the drop in price the parts have not dropped in price.
I would personally LOVE to refurbish N4s but the resale after fixing them is next to $0
Here is an option for you. IF you need to get anything off the phone you can get a used 8gig (I can find them for about 170-200 on my local CL) and swap the MB out. It's an incredibly easy swap.
Crap, nice phone, are third party parts good?

LG charges $140 to replace the digitizer and display.. not sure what you'll be after that but at least you'll have a usable and working phone, which still has solid specs for todays standards. Not sure about back but if you do everything under $200 you can sell it for at least that much or more.. Probably cost you 200 and sell for 250..

I had the same spousal situation with a N4. I've bought a new glass+digitizer+LCD off of eBay for $120 out of China. It only took about 30 mins to swap and looked factory. All things considered for a one piece unit, $120 is a good price. The Samsung all in one fronts are rarely below $200 for the S3 and newer. I also wanted to replace the N4's back since there was a serious scratch on the side of the back battery cover but like one of the previous posters said at $50 the rear cover seems too expensive.
Maybe just buy her a new case that covers the broken back glass and replace the front?
