Nexus 4 Slowing Down? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
For some reason lately I've noticed that my Nexus 4 has been slowing down. At least it feels that way. It's been much more laggy than ever before, and its just not as smooth and fast. I haven't done a reset since day 1, so maybe that's why?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

thats could be. if you have root, wipe your dalvik. if you dont have root, then factory resetting will wipe your dalvik among other things.

If you have root, try Greenify

Do you restart it occasionally?
Sent via Telnet

If you want it to work like day 1, back up your files and revert it to stock 4.2.2. I do it every now and then.

It's time to move on to any optimised ROM. I just got my N4 less than 13hours ago, and it's been running custom rom smoothly.

Maybe try doing a factory reset hope that helps. If the problem still exist try flashing a custom ROM and see if that help good luck Buddy

Extremely Slow Startup/Cold Boot Times - over 8 min to boot

Been using & loving the Nexus 7 for over a week now. When I first got the thing it started up very quickly - under 1 minute from the B&W GOOGLE screen to a fully populated app drawer. I have since installed a bunch of programs/apps, but pretty much no media files on the tablet. Now my cold boot/startup takes about 8 minutes. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to figure out what is taking so long to boot? The Nexus is stock & unrooted.

Sounds funky. Just spit-balling here but go into recovery and wipe cache and see if it helps any.
Or try do a fresh install after taking a NANdroid backup.
Currently unrooted ATM.

sounds like some apps are wreaking havoc on your n7

Why does this thing lock up all the time?

This device is blazing fast most of the time, but it will inexplicably lock up, completely, for a few minutes at a time for seemingly no reason. Right now it's frozen on a youtube video and I can't turn it off or use the screen. The device is also unusable really when installing apps, and will lag heavily in Google Now sometimes.
Is this just me? Or 4.2.1?
Just you. My N7 is still operating at warp speed and doesn't lock up..

Are you stock? If so I heard people saying turning off the sync for currents will help, for Google now lag I feel its performs better if you turn off the hot word in setting. But with that you can't say Google and start voice search
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I'm stock 4.2.1 and don't have those issues. I do have currents (and various other apps) disabled, so like previous response said try that. Otherwise maybe go with a factory reset.
When my gnex updated to 4.2 it's performance suffered until I factory reset, now it's been much better.

My best guess would be you have installed an app that is not compatible with 4.2.
How about posting a list of what you have installed, if you use multi-user, and if you are stock (not rooted), and we can give comments.
I agree. I'm running PA and rock solid. I was also rock solid on stock.
I've never had it lock up. I flashed a Trinity kernel once that caused sleep of death... but it was a known issue.

I have a pretty decent amount of apps installed. I'll post them in a minute, but no, I'm not multi-user, and I'm stock. I'll root and put a new rom on this thing if it's worth it, I figured it'd be fine the way it came.
btw, here are my androbench results. Are these slow?

thanks, I'll try disabling those.
Over 100 apps in total, my andronbench write speed is clearly an error so just compare read and app open macros.
My apps open much faster than yours, which I'd put down to PA ROM and kernel. Maybe your write speed is a bit slow?
Can you download "forever gone" from market and try a full fill and delete? Apparently helps reset the memory controller to improve performance.

I did forever gone earlier today.

I just want to know if I should restore, root and flash a new rom on this thing. Can someone check out my androbench scores and tell me if they're normal?

[Q] Should I root my Nexus 7?

Hi there. I've had my Nexus 7 for 1 1/2 month and I want to get more out of it. I'm currently running stock 4.2.1. I'm a little nervous because this is my first tablet, although I'm running cm10 on my phone. Is rooting worth it or should I wait a while?:highfive:
haven't you already waited for a while?
I had mine for Christmas just make sure u have a suitable recovery eg clockwork mod and use the right tools there is tons like nexus 7 toolkit I used it is simple even for first timers plus Google make it solo easy. Do it then get stick mount and expand our memory.
PS many people say it affects performance.
Bull sh**
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Yeah I rooted mine right away, but honestly I should of waited, I've tried a lot custom ROMs out there and all of them had give me bad performance/battery life maybe it could be my nexus 7 its self or 4.2.1 but I feel that i should of just waited wait till the nexus 7 development community gets better, not to take away from any developer here!
Via Galaxy Nexus [LTE]
i find no probs with using the stock rom plus CM10 seems to stay in a bootloop so did try that but reflashed back to stock ROM

I think it's about time you unlock the bootloader (beware: a data wipe is then imminent), and then root it and give it a taste of some lovely CM10.1!
I recently got an N7 myself and I thought the stock rom was snappy. Then I unlocked the bootloader, rooted it, flashed latest CWM and flashed CM10.1 and it's amazing!
Got mine after boxing day before it was fully charged boot loader was unlocked and rooted. Am sticking to stock at the mo with bricked kernel

NEVER NEVER NEVER root your device.
Thanks!
I used the toolkit last night and it worked very good. Flashed cm10.1 and all but I didn't like it. Now i'm back on stock 4.2.1. Maybe i'll install a custom rom later on. Thanks for you're answer and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!:highfive:
Like the OP, I've already got a rooted phone (Nexus S 4G running CM10.1). But I've come to doubt the benefit of rooting/flashing. My wife's stock Nexus S seems to run better than mine. That said, she barely uses the thing and has installed maybe 5 apps in 18 months of ownership, so it's not apples to apples.
I got my Nexus 7 last week and I haven't encountered a compelling reason to root it yet. Since it's a Nexus, the bloatware argument is moot. I do wish I could install some Polytonic Greek fonts, but that's hardly a reason to void the warranty. So for me, it's staying stock (for now...)
I've had my nexus for about 3 months now and I don't think I'll be rooting it. I just want my tablet to work and not have to screw with flashing, updating, etc. I'll stick to that stuff on my sgs3. I play games on my nexus and don't want to have to worry about losing data. I know there are backup apps but it's still a hassle and I've had trouble before.

I rooted mine the same day I got it, you can always lock it back up if you need to but I have no regrets rooting ad away is reason enough to root in my book
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Rooting and unlocking your device will not do any harm. I have rooted all of my devices and through the years never had a single problem. And if you are afraid you should know that any time you can relock the boot loader, unroot your phone and return back to stock so give it a shot

Random reboots using the camera?

Hey all,
As the title says: I'm having random reboots while using the camera. First it freezes for about 3 seconds and then hot boots into the Nexus logo. It happened 3 times over the past month so it isn't bad, but still not as it should. I'm on unrooted stock.
Any experiences/tips?

He's not rooted so it's some issue with the stock firmware. TC you can try factory reset.

Yes I see I failed to read the last sentence haha. I would also recommend a factory reset.

I also thought that would be the eventual outcome, but I'm really not into that . I guess I can live with it then and I will unlock my bootloader when I get sick of stock so things will be alright .

Unlocked my bootloader and thus did a factory reset, but it still happens at times. Any ideas?

Same problem at some devices at a hungarian forum. Mine does it some time. We are afraid of hardware problem.
Edit - just noticed the date on the OP ...
Have you tried re-flashing the stock ROM? It would be worth a try.

Do you read what he posted???
I had this problem on a DHD. Althought this is not a dhd the problem might be the same.
That was battery related. When i changed the bad battery, my problems went away.
Usually if your phone reboots during camera shots, it means the battery is borked. RMA it man.
Is it confirmed battery related?

Who knows... I got it as well, I notice it happens while focusing with flash and/or taking photos with flash for long time then it got reboot (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46312752) got it on stock camera app, with camera 360 tried the same situation and no reboot at all...
Maybe the flash warm the cpu or something which cause the reset...my battery temperature seems fine as I monitoring it.

Hi, Do you have a custom recovery installed? Reason Im asking is because I have difficulties to reproduce the problem after flashing a 4.3 factory image.
Edit: Im not sure what kind of impact a custom recovery could have. I have reproduced the issue on cm 10.1.3, Cm 10.2 and a stock rom flashed via cwm. But as I said, I have problems to reproduce it after flashing 4.3 factory image.

No mate, I'm on stock clean (without root/open bootloader) as it comes from google play 4.2.2 (I even didn't update to 4.3 just to check the stability of this version).
Now I got it again, I can confirm its nothing to do with 'heat' or anything about hot cpu...the device was cold. At this time also wifi was off so if someone had a thought...its nothing to do with it.
Seems its some bug with the stock camera app and/or gallery app... Shots only 2 photos with flash, take a look at the gallery and it got freeze and reboot.
Maybe the option to move from gallery to camera with only swiping...donno... Anyway its happening only when flash on so its weird....
Do you got this reboot only with macro flash photos or any type of flash photos?
Again, tried camera360 with more flash shots at macro and seems works without any problems , also Ive found it more accurate then stock one, eventough I like the stock app.
Has anyone found the problem cause I'm also having this same problem. Its happened three times, two of the times it was when focusing with flash. The phone just froze and rebooted. I did notice that before it rebooted I heard the camera aperture shutter a few time really quick and the the phone rebooted. The other time it was when I went from camera to gallery and zoomed in on the picture I had just taken.
I maybe thought it was the ROM problem but to hear you say its happened to you on stock ROM and not rooted my not sure what it is. If it matters I was on AOKP 4.2.2 and cm10.1.2 ,cm10.13.

Screen unresponsive

Basically, my N7's screen is frequently unresponsive. I was trying to start something in my launcher, and tried pressing it at least 6 times, but nothing happened. Then I tried swiping between launcher pages, and that worked just fine the first time.
This just started happening on an almost constant basis within the last 30-60 minutes, and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or heard of anyone else experiencing it. I'm running the latest Minimus with Jassy's latest kernel (I just flashed them this morning, but it was probably 4-5 hours ago at least), with the DPI set to 290 (I just raised it from 280 to see if that would help anything). I also cleared the cache and dalvik.
Any ideas?
My girlfriends tablet has done that too, then it just randomly goes back to just fine

me as well. And this is my second tablet after returning the first one for dead pixels

Same here this has happened to me on stock, but a reboot fixed it.
I've only experienced this using Chrome. it got so bad that I'm using the molasses-in-the-winter-going-up-hill Firefox browser just to be able to web surf.
Same here stock, and clean ROM.. Haven't noticed anything on kanged cm nor pa yet. Can't get otg to work worth a crap either I bought chainfires app to help with otg worked with stock based ROMs but not cm based ROMs .. I'm pissed I bought the 16 GB model..

It happened to me as well (complete stock). Mostly (if not all) instances were with Chrome. I don't remember it happening again since I switched to Chrome beta. (Fingers crossed).
I just took mine back to Best Buy and exchanged it for the 32gb model. The guy at the store asked if anything was wrong with the tablet and I told him that it would freeze up and I would have to reboot in order to fix it. He told me that all tablets and phones freeze like that and that I should reboot the device at least once a day to prevent the freezing of the screen. I thanked him and told him that I would do that. These salesmen must think that everyone is as dumb as they are.
I hope my new tablet doesn't have the same problem, because if it does I might give up on the new nexus 7.
