Extremely Slow Startup/Cold Boot Times - over 8 min to boot - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been using & loving the Nexus 7 for over a week now. When I first got the thing it started up very quickly - under 1 minute from the B&W GOOGLE screen to a fully populated app drawer. I have since installed a bunch of programs/apps, but pretty much no media files on the tablet. Now my cold boot/startup takes about 8 minutes. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to figure out what is taking so long to boot? The Nexus is stock & unrooted.

Sounds funky. Just spit-balling here but go into recovery and wipe cache and see if it helps any.
Or try do a fresh install after taking a NANdroid backup.

Currently unrooted ATM.

sounds like some apps are wreaking havoc on your n7

I'm having some random reboots, they are hot reboots not full. Anyone else having the same problem? I'm completely stock and no rogue apps that I'm aware of. It has happened a few times last 20 mins while browsing on xda app. Thanks

Must either be bad silicone, or a bad rogue app... You can try a factory reset and try again! Also this needs to be in the Q&A section, this is not a general topic.
I had it reboot after I took a picture, then I swiped to left to see the picture while in camera mode. Zoomed in on the picture, heard some screeching sounds (probably from auto focus of camera?) and then it rebooted.
I hasn't tried to reproduce it, but I do hear the screeching once in a while if I go into picture view from camera mode.
I have had random reboots with my nexus 7 on 4.2, so I think it's more of a software issue than anything else.

I've just had one full reboot when watching a you tube clip. Nothing to worry about unless it happens frequently. I haven't owned a phone that hasn't rebooted or frozen at some point.

I've had about 4 restarts since getting it yesterday. Also happens on my Nexus 7. Thinking it may be an app on my google account but my Nexus 4 is pretty much stock.. Not sure what it is.
Have gotten it on the nexus 7 once but not on the nexus 4.
It is just 4.2 bugs supposedly. I am sure it will be fixed.

No reboots here.

Thanks everyone, just seeing if I was the only one.

I have random reboots. As of yesterday, my phone rebooted 3 times. This morning I woke up, luckily before my alarm normally goes off, and notices my phone screen was on, but nothing was actually on the screen. I pressed the power button a few times and nothing happened. I unplugged the phone from the charger, tried it again, and notice the screen flicker, and then reboot. This morning it's already rebooted once.
Most of the time I was in Google Play Store, so I cleared the cache and data, and let it update to the newest version, so hopefully that fixes it. I sure hope I don't have a lemon. I really hope that the phone acting weird doesn't happen again, I can't afford to miss my alarm going off.
Mine has turned off on me twice since I got it. I think I was using bluetooth both times, but I can't be sure. Anyways, the Galaxy Nexus had issues like this when it first came out and the new Windows Phones have rebooting issues as well. I think Google rushed Android 4.2 out, but I'm sure everything will be stable after another OTA or two. That's the worst and best part about having a Nexus. You get brand new software first, so you sometimes feel like a beta tester, but you also get the fixes extremely quickly.
Glad I'm not the only one having random reboots. My n4 has rebooted twice this morning (within 2hrs). One hot and one cold.

+1 random hot reboots on my nexus 7 stock rooted 4.2. Happening at least 4-5 times a day, its becoming somewhat tedious now
no reboots so far :fingers-crossed:
I've had 1 random reboot while watching a YouTube video.

it seems there is some issue with android, not just now.. because the same thing happen a lot on the nexus 7 and Gnex.

Same happened to me today but i wasnt able to recreate issue.
I heard some screeching sound and then screen frozen and there it rebooted.
But after that i tryed to take pictures and i heard that screeching again but it not rebooted.
This was my frist time that Nexus 4 rebooted.
So
Software or Hardware issue?
I didn't have a reboot but shut off. First time yesterday and had the phone since Nov 20th. It wouldn't turn back on, not even charge .. Took maybe 30mins then it turned on. I was just texting, put the phone down.. Screen shutoff, wanted to text again and nothing. I have it unlocked and rooted only.. Stock everything.

4.2.2 just random rebooted
My nexus 4 now on 4.2.2 just randomly rebooted for the 1st time.
I 'm dissapointed. Waited for this OTA for a couple months now for it to just fix this issue and it's still here? :/
I just can't be angry at the device cause i 'm absolutely in love with it. Best device ever made and 4.2.1 (and 4.2.2) are amazingly consistent and stable, but for this issue.
pff just hope that we don't have to wait till KLP for this to be worked out.

Anyone having problems with random reboots? (Nexus Logo fast reboot)

My nexus 4 started rebooting once every 1-2 days randomly.
It isn't like a full reboot it just shows the nexus logo and then the homescreen, the whole process takes less than 10 seconds.
It occurs randomly, once at the homescreen.
It isn't happening to me. Try using a different ROM/kernel combo or a factory reset.

forgot to mention, i'm running stock android.

You might try a data/factory reset, save important files to the pc first. Or it may be an app (incompatible or corruped in some way) that causes this issue.

At least 2 threads on here already about random reboots. Try to not use any widgets that user location services, or try disable location services (unless you need them) until Google releases a fix.

Using stock rom unrooted. Never happen to me

Happened about two times to me when using the camera, very strange.

I'm using widgets that use location services as well (Beautiful Widgets) but never experienced a random reboot. From what I know, the nexus 4 and nexus 7 are both known for having this problem though.
This happened to my wife's n4 a lot. She wanted to return it but I convinced her to let me try something first. I flashed factory images and she hasn't had any reboots yet.

Nexus 4 Slowing Down?

Hey all,
For some reason lately I've noticed that my Nexus 4 has been slowing down. At least it feels that way. It's been much more laggy than ever before, and its just not as smooth and fast. I haven't done a reset since day 1, so maybe that's why?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
thats could be. if you have root, wipe your dalvik. if you dont have root, then factory resetting will wipe your dalvik among other things.
If you have root, try Greenify
Do you restart it occasionally?
Sent via Telnet
If you want it to work like day 1, back up your files and revert it to stock 4.2.2. I do it every now and then.
It's time to move on to any optimised ROM. I just got my N4 less than 13hours ago, and it's been running custom rom smoothly.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Maybe try doing a factory reset hope that helps. If the problem still exist try flashing a custom ROM and see if that help good luck Buddy

Screen unresponsive

Basically, my N7's screen is frequently unresponsive. I was trying to start something in my launcher, and tried pressing it at least 6 times, but nothing happened. Then I tried swiping between launcher pages, and that worked just fine the first time.
This just started happening on an almost constant basis within the last 30-60 minutes, and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or heard of anyone else experiencing it. I'm running the latest Minimus with Jassy's latest kernel (I just flashed them this morning, but it was probably 4-5 hours ago at least), with the DPI set to 290 (I just raised it from 280 to see if that would help anything). I also cleared the cache and dalvik.
Any ideas?
My girlfriends tablet has done that too, then it just randomly goes back to just fine

Why don't you try stock and see if you have an issue. This would allow you to rule things out at least.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Same issue here...both stock and CleanROM
me as well. And this is my second tablet after returning the first one for dead pixels
My tablet is stock rooted and I have just experienced this. I had to reboot in order to fix it. Hopefully this doesn't happen again.

Same here this has happened to me on stock, but a reboot fixed it.
I've only experienced this using Chrome. it got so bad that I'm using the molasses-in-the-winter-going-up-hill Firefox browser just to be able to web surf.
Same here stock, and clean ROM.. Haven't noticed anything on kanged cm nor pa yet. Can't get otg to work worth a crap either I bought chainfires app to help with otg worked with stock based ROMs but not cm based ROMs .. I'm pissed I bought the 16 GB model..

It happened to me as well (complete stock). Mostly (if not all) instances were with Chrome. I don't remember it happening again since I switched to Chrome beta. (Fingers crossed).
I just took mine back to Best Buy and exchanged it for the 32gb model. The guy at the store asked if anything was wrong with the tablet and I told him that it would freeze up and I would have to reboot in order to fix it. He told me that all tablets and phones freeze like that and that I should reboot the device at least once a day to prevent the freezing of the screen. I thanked him and told him that I would do that. These salesmen must think that everyone is as dumb as they are.
I hope my new tablet doesn't have the same problem, because if it does I might give up on the new nexus 7.

My nexus 7 just formated it self...?

I've been having random reboots like others have, but this time it set my tablet to factory settings and erased all saved data. I just came back from a vacation and I lost all my pictures and videos. Going to try to get a new tablet tomorrow.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Wow dang was it rooted? Hopefully this is just a software issue but it shouldn't be doing this on stock
I also experienced that when I first was setting up my tablet. I logged into all my apps instagram etc. It rebooted and everything was logged out. It was fine for 3 days and I just had a reboot but my data is still there this time
