Random reboots using the camera? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
As the title says: I'm having random reboots while using the camera. First it freezes for about 3 seconds and then hot boots into the Nexus logo. It happened 3 times over the past month so it isn't bad, but still not as it should. I'm on unrooted stock.
Any experiences/tips?

He's not rooted so it's some issue with the stock firmware. TC you can try factory reset.

Yes I see I failed to read the last sentence haha. I would also recommend a factory reset.

I also thought that would be the eventual outcome, but I'm really not into that . I guess I can live with it then and I will unlock my bootloader when I get sick of stock so things will be alright .

Unlocked my bootloader and thus did a factory reset, but it still happens at times. Any ideas?

Same problem at some devices at a hungarian forum. Mine does it some time. We are afraid of hardware problem.

Edit - just noticed the date on the OP ...
Have you tried re-flashing the stock ROM? It would be worth a try.

Do you read what he posted???

I had this problem on a DHD. Althought this is not a dhd the problem might be the same.
That was battery related. When i changed the bad battery, my problems went away.

Usually if your phone reboots during camera shots, it means the battery is borked. RMA it man.

Is it confirmed battery related?

Who knows... I got it as well, I notice it happens while focusing with flash and/or taking photos with flash for long time then it got reboot (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46312752) got it on stock camera app, with camera 360 tried the same situation and no reboot at all...
Maybe the flash warm the cpu or something which cause the reset...my battery temperature seems fine as I monitoring it.

Hi, Do you have a custom recovery installed? Reason Im asking is because I have difficulties to reproduce the problem after flashing a 4.3 factory image.
Edit: Im not sure what kind of impact a custom recovery could have. I have reproduced the issue on cm 10.1.3, Cm 10.2 and a stock rom flashed via cwm. But as I said, I have problems to reproduce it after flashing 4.3 factory image.

No mate, I'm on stock clean (without root/open bootloader) as it comes from google play 4.2.2 (I even didn't update to 4.3 just to check the stability of this version).
Now I got it again, I can confirm its nothing to do with 'heat' or anything about hot cpu...the device was cold. At this time also wifi was off so if someone had a thought...its nothing to do with it.
Seems its some bug with the stock camera app and/or gallery app... Shots only 2 photos with flash, take a look at the gallery and it got freeze and reboot.
Maybe the option to move from gallery to camera with only swiping...donno... Anyway its happening only when flash on so its weird....
Do you got this reboot only with macro flash photos or any type of flash photos?
Again, tried camera360 with more flash shots at macro and seems works without any problems , also Ive found it more accurate then stock one, eventough I like the stock app.

Has anyone found the problem cause I'm also having this same problem. Its happened three times, two of the times it was when focusing with flash. The phone just froze and rebooted. I did notice that before it rebooted I heard the camera aperture shutter a few time really quick and the the phone rebooted. The other time it was when I went from camera to gallery and zoomed in on the picture I had just taken.
I maybe thought it was the ROM problem but to hear you say its happened to you on stock ROM and not rooted my not sure what it is. If it matters I was on AOKP 4.2.2 and cm10.1.2 ,cm10.13.

Screen unresponsive

Basically, my N7's screen is frequently unresponsive. I was trying to start something in my launcher, and tried pressing it at least 6 times, but nothing happened. Then I tried swiping between launcher pages, and that worked just fine the first time.
This just started happening on an almost constant basis within the last 30-60 minutes, and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or heard of anyone else experiencing it. I'm running the latest Minimus with Jassy's latest kernel (I just flashed them this morning, but it was probably 4-5 hours ago at least), with the DPI set to 290 (I just raised it from 280 to see if that would help anything). I also cleared the cache and dalvik.
Any ideas?
My girlfriends tablet has done that too, then it just randomly goes back to just fine

Why don't you try stock and see if you have an issue. This would allow you to rule things out at least.

Same issue here...both stock and CleanROM
me as well. And this is my second tablet after returning the first one for dead pixels
My tablet is stock rooted and I have just experienced this. I had to reboot in order to fix it. Hopefully this doesn't happen again.

Same here this has happened to me on stock, but a reboot fixed it.
I've only experienced this using Chrome. it got so bad that I'm using the molasses-in-the-winter-going-up-hill Firefox browser just to be able to web surf.
Same here stock, and clean ROM.. Haven't noticed anything on kanged cm nor pa yet. Can't get otg to work worth a crap either I bought chainfires app to help with otg worked with stock based ROMs but not cm based ROMs .. I'm pissed I bought the 16 GB model..

It happened to me as well (complete stock). Mostly (if not all) instances were with Chrome. I don't remember it happening again since I switched to Chrome beta. (Fingers crossed).
I just took mine back to Best Buy and exchanged it for the 32gb model. The guy at the store asked if anything was wrong with the tablet and I told him that it would freeze up and I would have to reboot in order to fix it. He told me that all tablets and phones freeze like that and that I should reboot the device at least once a day to prevent the freezing of the screen. I thanked him and told him that I would do that. These salesmen must think that everyone is as dumb as they are.
I hope my new tablet doesn't have the same problem, because if it does I might give up on the new nexus 7.

Ghost fingers on touch screen...??

Hi guys,
I recently bought a Google Nexus 4. Great device! But now I have a problem with the touch screen I guess.
I have some ghost touches on the screen. They are always on the same places.
To be more specific, on the same X-as of the screen. 3 to 5 touches in horizontal direction, swiping and touching the screen.
It's not always there, that's what's bothering me.. what is gods name could it be...
I'll add a screenshot of the touches when I get a chance to...
I have this problem for about a week now. And I was wondering if someone knows the solution to this.
ROM: Cyanogenmod 10.1.2
Cheers,
Alexander

I have installed the custom rom the moment I got this device. It didn't happen before.. So I doubt it is a software problem. I'd rather think of it as a hardware problem, don't you think?
No-one?
If it started on custom Rom then flash back to stock to see if it still happens. If not then there you go.
If still happens even on stock then RMA the device.

I flashed another ROM CM10.2 UNOFFICIAL. Did a clean install.
Untill now it is reacting normal.. Let's wait and see.
I am thinking, could it be of some backup settings it is recovering from my google account?
Because it has no Gapps installed yet. Downloading at the moment.
Thanks in advance
As suggested, try stock.

Ok, The CM10.2 did not work. I disabled auto backup and recovery of Google settings and stuff and flashed the Stock ROM 4.2.2.
Also there was an official update to 4.3. And surprisingly enough, the device is responding normal again. Still though, i think it was very strange that the problem was also in the recovery...

[SOLVED] Frustrating Battery Problem!

I dont know whats up with my Nexus 4 battery but its acting weird.
Sometimes at around 40% (or 30%, or 20%) my phone just switches off, then when I put it to charge and switch it back on, the phone is at 1%.
I tried calibrating the battery properly several several times with no luck
This happened when I was in 4.2.2 first. After that when I flashed 4.3 factory image the problem was solved.
Now when I flashed the Kit Kat image, I have this issue again. I'm really annoyed with this as I cant take my phone outside without knowing how much battery I REALLY have left.
I need help here please.
SOLVED: I guess the problem was because of a faulty battery. My old battery was swelling, so I replaced it and these problems were all solved

I just came here to post the same thread! Yesterday my phone just went dark without any sign or switching off animation at about 25% battery. I plugged it in and now when it got to 76% it just went straight to 100% full battery. Obviously while discharging it it will switch off again at 20-25%. What can we do? Completely stock, unrooted, 4.4 Kit kat sideloaded. Edit: Did the factory reset after 4.4 kit kat
you can try factory reset (wipe all data), or a clean flash 4.4.

Mine does that randomly, the screen just switches off. When I switch on there's enough battery remaining.

Artifacts at boot

Hello, i just bought a nexus 10 and updated to android 4.4.4 but i noticed a weird thing that happen often when i power on the tablet. Before the google logo in the lower side of the screen im having strange artifacts / lines with strange pixels that disappears in an instant. I have recorded the thing and uploaded a video....tablet is stock locked and unrooted. Tablet works normally without any evident issues....why im seeing this artifacts before the google logo and how can i fix it? It is software or hardware related? Thank you very much i hope someone can help me here is the video :

I have noticed that on both 4.3 and 4.4. Wasn't there on 4.2.
Im not sure if the issue was there before updating since i just updated the tablet by ota to the last 4.4.4 as soon i get it. I tried a clean flash from stock and the artifacts on boot are still there...i cant flash other custom roms because im stock and locked....more infos are appreciated I would like to know if its normal and if its hardware or software issue
Thank you very much

Mine has always had that as well. I don't think it's that big of a deal since they disappear right away. Possibly a combination of hardware and software. Maybe due to the Mali GPU chip? I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Seems to be pretty common on this device. Now if they don't disappear, then that's a problem.

Yes the artifacts disappear after the google logo. This thing happen only with the stock rom or even with custom roms? Unfortunately i cant try since its a gift, i hope this artifacts are not sign of a hardware defect.

I was using SlimBean 4.2.2 correctly, but updating to SlimKat 4.4 this problem appeared, but I also updated TWRP from 2.6.3.0 to 2.7.10.
Same problem with others ROMS as Purity and RastaKat and different kernels as KTManta and Trinity.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Im using the stock recovery since my nexus 10 its stock locked and unrooted. So every nexus 10 owner who updated to kitkat would experience this thing...This issue has been reported to google? My retailer told me that i can RMA the device but if every Nexus 10 have this artifacts at boot then its useless to RMA.…also im new to the Nexus 10 forum as i own a nexus 7. This problem has been mentioned on other topics? Thank you

Ok, then this must be a problem with Google's sources (a GPU driver error?) because it is a common issue between different ROMs, Kernels and recoveries, but I do not know if Google has been notified.

Experiencing random freezes on 7.1.2

An about a month ago switched to 7.1.2 from 6.0.1.

Since then I'm having random freezes that only pressing the power button and reboot will help.
I can't figure out what causes these freezes.

Try a factory reset see if that helps really hard to say. Are you using substratum try removing overlays. If using custom kernel resore to stock. If it was me I would completely wipe my phone including internal. Then flash a fresh factory image to rule out any software related issues. Just make sure you back up all your pics etc.
I'm using stock kernel. The freezes are random. Can't figure out what triggers them.
The freeze can be while the phone connected to charger, lying on a table or when I on Facebook or something else...

There apps that you can get that will show you logs of what's going on in the background. Catlog or syslog are ones that I know of. They can be hard to understand but might give you some clues to what's going on. After the phone does it thing quickly check the log and see if any errors from apps and such that stand out.
