Why does this thing lock up all the time? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This device is blazing fast most of the time, but it will inexplicably lock up, completely, for a few minutes at a time for seemingly no reason. Right now it's frozen on a youtube video and I can't turn it off or use the screen. The device is also unusable really when installing apps, and will lag heavily in Google Now sometimes.
Is this just me? Or 4.2.1?

Just you. My N7 is still operating at warp speed and doesn't lock up..

Are you stock? If so I heard people saying turning off the sync for currents will help, for Google now lag I feel its performs better if you turn off the hot word in setting. But with that you can't say Google and start voice search

I'm stock 4.2.1 and don't have those issues. I do have currents (and various other apps) disabled, so like previous response said try that. Otherwise maybe go with a factory reset.
When my gnex updated to 4.2 it's performance suffered until I factory reset, now it's been much better.

My best guess would be you have installed an app that is not compatible with 4.2.
How about posting a list of what you have installed, if you use multi-user, and if you are stock (not rooted), and we can give comments.

I agree. I'm running PA and rock solid. I was also rock solid on stock.
I've never had it lock up. I flashed a Trinity kernel once that caused sleep of death... but it was a known issue.

I have a pretty decent amount of apps installed. I'll post them in a minute, but no, I'm not multi-user, and I'm stock. I'll root and put a new rom on this thing if it's worth it, I figured it'd be fine the way it came.

btw, here are my androbench results. Are these slow?

thanks, I'll try disabling those.

Over 100 apps in total, my andronbench write speed is clearly an error so just compare read and app open macros.
My apps open much faster than yours, which I'd put down to PA ROM and kernel. Maybe your write speed is a bit slow?
Can you download "forever gone" from market and try a full fill and delete? Apparently helps reset the memory controller to improve performance.

What bugs?
Screen flickering ,random lags when accessing settings or apps.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I've seen none of those problems at all. No screen flickering, no lag, nothing.

U must be the lucky one, I been searching and seems many have this problems. Do u use the Google services like all the sync features??? What about drive?

Chrome seems laggier than it should be, hope there is some issue there than can be fixed to improve performance.
Every Nexus 7 I've had so far (that'd be 4) have all had washed out looking greens and yellows and over saturated whites. Hoping that is something a patch can fix.
Tegra 3's Prism smart dimmer feature causes the screen to look over exposed while and after videos play (fades away after a few seconds). I've disabled the smart dimmer, so it's okay for me, but seems like an issue that needs a patch.
I have seen nothing in JB 4.1.1 that would require an update at this point.
Might as well expect an update for dark pixels.

Screen flickering is a known hardware issue
Mine lags bad from time to time. I wonder if it has to do with google now because my galaxy nexus lags just as bad if not worse when i tap the google now search bar. I was trying to find and app (shazam) and thought it would be faster to look for it through now, but it lagged and lagged and lagged. By the time I got the app open, the song was over and I couldn't tag it.
My Gnexus is great, fast ,no complains at all,Google now is quick I got no lag, but on the nexus 7 it becomes a problem to the point that I have to switch it off and use the browser.

I use dropbox which is pretty much the same in terms of resources. I have play movies, music, currents, books. I have pandora on there, google now, generally everything you could need. I've done this on both stock 4.1.1 and on Paranoid Android (every iteration). Literally NO lag. Even being slightly underclocked.

Nope, it's from a poorly soldered wifi chip, that is drawing power away from the screen when wifi is low.
I had this issue, and called Google personally for support, and the person confirmed that the screen flickering was hardware, not software.

Never had any of that so I doubt its a "software issue". If it is its likely something you installed.
quick update about the lag on the nexus7:
i used Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.2 to root and install recovery about 4 times ,and in all this times i had problems with lag ,so two days ago i decided to restart again and root the n7 with Galaxy Nexus ToolKit v2.0 but without installing the custom recovery.
now it very quick and as no lag at all,and yes i loaded the identical apps all the previous time.

I think most of the lag is because of a bad app or a setting somewhere. Glad to hear you got it sorted out. I'm just looking forward to the update that fixes the bootloader issues with accessing recovery without the usb cable or using terminal commands/adb/apps.

huge mediaserver/audioout_2 wakelock hogging battery life

Today i want to work and put the device in a drawer. never touched it during the whole shift but one phone call. during a five hour period 30% of the battery was wasted. bbs showed audioout_2 wakelock took place for 5 hours. screen time was 30 minutes. I haven't kept any screen shots from bbs but i did capture on system battery usage.
what could have caused it?

I have no media files on my storage, all my music is via GOOGLE PLAY.
(the wakelock is not caused by google play because since I booted the phone I have not listened to any music)
There seems to be a fix for the problem, haven`t used it myself though. Link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050252. Its a init.d script at boot and you need root.
I wish to avoid rooting my device. when I bought the nexus I wanted to have a vanilla Google experience.
Also I don't wanna void my warranty.

and what of the audio out 2 wakelock? I'm still getting high wakelock times because of it
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I remember one time, I left a game without closing the game. 5 hours later my battery dipped and I tried to figure out why. I realized that the game was still running in the background and drained a good 30% of my battery because of the mediaserver. I know it was still actice cuz when I hit recent it picked up exactly where I left off with no lag jumping back into it.
I'm guessing the game isn't coded to freeze in the background when you leave it. I could be wrong, but this is one possibility I think.
I'm on PA, with the matrix kernel. The game is called PAD in case anyone wants more info. I say, just be sure to exit games or generally certain apps when you finish playing them.
This only happened once and since then never again since I started closing that particular app correctly. Also, I don't mess with any music volume booster mods. Just get some noise isolating earbuds/headphones. The volume booster mods definitely killed battery much quicker than it was worth with my first nexus 4
I close everything and still got 1.5h of AudioOut_2 and AudioOut_3 wakelock overnight . 20% battery drain overnight. normally my battery drains 5-6% overnight.
up
Maybe there is a corrupt file on your phone, it doesn't have to be music, could also be a ringtone or a video.
considering you don't want to root I would consider factory reset then reinstall 1 app at a time until you find the culprit. I know it's time consuming but it's either that or keep your charger handy

For some reason my Nexus 7 is strangely slow lately idk why, but I want to know if anyone else has seen there Nexus 7 lagging? And if anyone knows how to speed it up? Posting screen shot of my system info.

Exactly the same here. Typing's hard work, and tapping icons or buttons can take a couple of tries before it registers. All updated and tried a reboot.
You should upgade to 4.2.2, make full wipe and start from scratch. Then you will see if lag is still there.

[Q] why does the 4.3 update use all my RAM??

So I had pacman v22.0.0, and I used survival mode on superSU pro to keep root, and flashed the pacman 4.3 update. My phone started lagging, overheating, and taking forever to charge. On 4.2.2 I had a few apps always running but rarely used more than 800MB of my RAM, but oh 4.3 with all the apps running the same, my RAM usage is normally about 1.4GB.
I'm assuming this has to be 4.3 right? Is it just me that's missing something, or have other people had the same experience with this?
Either way, if you're not completely running out of free ram, you have nothing to worry about.
Nope its not an issue with 4.3. I have few apps running with 800mb used . I am using PA 4.3. Never noticed any lag or overheating problems. It could be certain apps causing the issue?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
Why don't you check in Running apps to see what apps are taking up your rams. I have been using 4.3 custom and now stock and its usually 400mb or less.
I assumed it was the fact that the pacman ROM had so many customizable options. I have the same exact apps running as I did before I updated, but my RAM usage has almost doubled. I know I have nothing to worry about, but when my phone is hitting 120 degrees on average, lagging, and the battery still drains while it's on the charger, I figured it's either the ROM or the fact that I didn't re root, I used survival mode. I checked my app usage, but the apps aren't accounting for most of the usage. Something else is, and I have no idea what.
With stock Rom and sometimes I can see 450mb Ram available.
So what?
Phone runs still flawlessly with no lags.
Don't get upset by numbers.

Guess it's rather the overheating and lagging that upsets him
You probably know this already, but it's not because of 4.3. Never had anything like that on PACman or CM10.2 - only once with a different kernel while navigating. But it just overheated, didn't lag or anything.
You should have flashed the factory images instead of just the zip;

But as was mentioned here before you should probably flash latest bootloader and modem. Either by flashing the factory image or by flashing a zip that contains both bootloader and modem.

Mine is choppy (low frame rate) occasionally - it was more noticeable during the recent halloween event. Seems ok now since the thanksgiving update.
It does crash quite frequently though - maybe one out of every three or four sessions.
I play daily and it crashes at least once every time I play it. Used to have sgs4 I337 running gpe Roms and it wouldn't work at all. Warrantied a bad headset speaker and here I am. The new sgs4 AT&T sent me had a locked boot loader and no root android 4.3. I didn't want a galaxy phone so sold it for 400 bought the nexus 5.
Level 37 now. Same as zulugod stated was laggy with Halloween update, better now.
