Teenager beats tech giants to launch world's first smart WATCH - Other SmartWatches

I assume everyone saw this article - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencet...art-WATCH-makes-calls-comes-built-camera.html. What an achievement ahead of the main companies fighting for this area of the market. The watch looks like it has been designed well from the images, allbeit perhaps a little large. The price of £150 seems extremely reasonable. Let me know your thoughts.

That's the Z1 Rock watch, or a clone of it. Literally almost identical. Check the specs on my site here. It's very very old news, and was not the first device to run a standalone OS, or even the first to run android.
Is it neat? Sure. It's also HUGE though, and runs an older version of Android than the ACTV, which came out before this one. As for the price, currently, 150 pounds equates to about 227 US dollars, and for that price, I'd rather have the actv I think.

"Teenager tries to take credit for someone elses Smart Watch"
There, fixed the title. This is an open source (I guess that's what they call it) watch body. The chinese company makes the watch, buyers who commit to massive quantities can choose color, logo, and name to sell as their own.
This watch in the past has been branded as the Z1 watch and the Vega Watch. It's not new..at all. And it's quite frankly not a very good watch phone. As ClearD was talking about the Motoactv just slays this thing in terms of power.

Is this the same as Neptune Pine? http://www.neptunepine.com/product.html
Eitherway, its a wrist phone, not a smart watch. The whole idea of smart watch is to be a remote extension of the smart phone, not a replacement of it. You get notification, and decide if you want to act on it. In my opinion, wrist watch is a different category. Beside, I'm not sure if I would find it too healthy to wear most of the day 3G receiver/transmitter on my wrist with all that electromagnetic waves circulation At least with my smart phone its either on a dash board mount in the car when I'm driving, or the desk away from me when I'm at work, or somewhere on a table at home. Smart watch is just a bluetooth gadget

Nah, the Neptune pine is way better. Like... In every aspect. Lol
Sent using XDA-funded carrier pigeons

I would not mind trying it out if a developer helps out. Not on AT&T so how useful the phone would be is something I am uncertain about.

Arrogant iPad 2 Commercial: "We Believe"

Now that Samsung is faster, thinner, and lighter than the ipad 2, apparently that doesn't matter to steve jobs any more.
Thoughts?

Honestly, isn't it the case now that Jobs isn't spearing the marketing campaign anymore? The commercials lack the douchey weird quality that they had and now almost seem boring, cold. Maybe it's just me...
But yea, when one marketing strategy doesn't work you shift to another.
Ipad 2 strategy up to now has been mostly about speed, weight, size, and to a much lesser extent, apps. Now that the first three are not theirs for much longer, apple is doing damage control marketing to go back on what they said before... Speed, weight, and size are nice... But it's all about the apps... Standard apple douche move.
Sure it sounds bad, but I cannot wait for jobs to die. Then some of the dislike I have for apple might go... But I doubt it.
Haha well I don't Llke Steve jobs either but I don't really want him to die but to each their own I guess haha

Are you serious right now? You want someone to drop dead because they know how to market their products properly? Apple is a business. Business is about money. If you have to bash your competition, and make your product seem like a god compared to all the others, you will do it. Hate him if you will, he knows what he is doing. He is a sleezy business man making millions with a cult like following for his brand. However, his attitude is a major flaw. He doesn't seem like the nicest of people.

Yes, I think jobs is a prick and an elitist arsehole since I became aware of him in the 80ies. It's mostly his personality (snobbish commercials and lack of choice in hardware also) that keep me from giving apple a fair shake when evaluating their products. With him truly out of the picture... The choice in hardware is better...
Like you said, cult of personality. I can't stand cults
Isn't Jobs on medical leave still? Since I haven't read news about "OMG, Steve Jobs is now back and doing well again!" But then again, I don't know the process these big companies go through.
What apple has over any android tablet is availability here the the uk, you can walk into any electronics retailer and buy an ipad, but if you want an android tablet (example asus transformer, acer iconia which are both for sale) 'can i buy one today, over the counter'? no you'll have to order one which takes a week
What's the point of having electrical retailers that don't know what retail means?
The basics of supply and demand
If i wanted to buy online and wait a week i would buy from ebay
In here the Netherlands, you must wait a month to get an ipad2.

PC world have never heard of the Asus transformer, and the iconia is mail order only
Buyitdirect won't have the transformer until may.
On the television news today they're stating that retails sales are lowest for 11 months!! is it hardly surprising. If you read a review about something that's ****, and would spend twice the time being repaired than what you would using it, then we've got loads of those, but if you want something that's remotely decent we don't stock it in store.
Might as well live in outback Botswana
It may be going about it different but usually big corporations tend to try something new if the first doesnt work. I can't blame Steve Job...but then again I'm not a super hardcore wish someone dead for making a ipad commercial android fan.
You can get a vega, xoom and one or two other android tablets at pcworld.

Ahaha, I love how apple, having nothing to show except scaled up iphone apps is forcing into the ad "medical professionals uses of the ipad".
Not only this looks elitist and even colder but it is also completly unappropriate for medical use. I do work into the field of radiology and hell a 1080* res screen is way way way too much fail to look at radios or CT scans. You'd have to zoom in all the time and miss the bigger picture. Another point is also that a iOS device cannot plug into a classic medical environment that is 99% of the times using windows computers or remote servers without even a WIFI connectivity for security reasons.
Too long didn't read : Apple ipad2 makes you a doctor and allows your spoiled children to draw numbers with their fingers while their brain and cerebellous white matter is wiring, so that obviously, they won't even be able to handle a pen later on. Technology is not enough, you just need the smug.

Yea the whole medical app thing is a bit comical to me. I guess it's nice to have, but so what? 99.9% of the people who own an iPad don't buy one for the functionality mentioned there. Apple touted "thinner, lighter, faster" until none of those were true anymore and now it's "all about the apps". Outside of Netflix, there's nothing that it has that I want.
Title Changed
Thread title changed to something a little bit less... aggressive.
While I agree that the commercial is excessive, what marketing isn't. Let's keep it friendly in here, as many users here on XDA also happen to like iPads.

The first smartwatch which inspired others?

Anybody still remember this guy...
Sent from my HTC Desire C
I, personally, don't remember that guy, but, maybe, if you'd give us more details, we could talk about it. Maybe somebody even has it.
It's the iPod nano 6th generation that came out in 2010
Sent from my HTC Desire C
I'm sorry to tell you, but that didn't start anything.
Starting from wikipedia, I found out the Seiko Data 2000, which is probably the first smartwatch.
If you dig deeper you can find that this whole smartwatch idea is pretty old, it's just tat now it turned into something else. And, as somebody around here was saying (don't remember who, can't quote), I'm waiting for the day when a tiny device in my ear will signal me that my watch is showing me a notification from my phone.
Hahaha....
Sent from my HTC Desire C
I think the iPod Nano really brought the idea into the mainstream - just like Apple did with tablets. They didn't invent it - but they got it enough speaking time for people to get interested.
I had a Nano watch, but that was before I had a smartphone. Now that I have a smartphone, I don't really need a tiny music player since the phone serves as one.
"Smart watches" are a solid idea, but I don't see any reason to add another gadget back in that I've effectively gotten rid of and no longer need to carry. I'm sure they'll work for some people, I've just never been a watch person.

I never owned a nano/nano watch but I agree with Pennycake. Apple is good at making ideas mainstream.
I wouldn't classify an mp3 player as a smart-anything... And I've got one!
It also did not come with a watch band initially (you had to buy it separately), meaning it wasn't intended to be a watch in the first place. I hope that makes sense.

Why have a watch that tells you when your phones ringing, when you can have a watch that is your phone.
For under $100 some of these have the same features as my old LX600 LG Lotus multi-media flip phone(one of my favorites).
They have also gotten down to a reasonable watch size.

As you said, having the ipod nano on your wrist is like having an mp3 player on your wrist, period. It doesn't connect to your smart phone, it doesn't do anything a smart phone does, and it wasn't even sold as a watch. I know exactly what it does cause I still have mine, except it's now a part of my ~$250 alarm clock setup (yes, that's right, although that wasn't the original intention..)

Assuming you're talking about the Z1 (Rock) watch, there's a comparison for that right here.
A "true" smart watch runs on a smart phone platform. 99% of those chinese phone watches run feature phone platforms, in otherwords, they're dumbphones. The one and only chinese phone watch that uses a smart platform (Android) is the Z1. It's ok, but crap screen, slow processor, and huge physical size are major downsides. Also, it's closer to $250, definitely not under $100 (or I'd have one right now just for ****s and giggles, lol)

Not to say they suck or aren't neat, they're just not what people would consider a "smart watch"
I used one of these watches in the past and it was pure junk. Didn't think I'd go for another 'smart watch' but I decided to try out the Pebble watch. Of course the difference being the Pebble only connected to my main phone, which I preferred. The Pebble is just good enough to view notifications. I chose the Note 2's large screen for a reason... so I wouldn't have to dial on a small screen.
Would love to have a pebble watch

I funded mine a couple of weeks ago. It's a nice looking watch, my only concern is that it did not get anywhere close to the funding of the pebble which might limit the amount of Apps that will get developed. Any thoughts?
You may be right about app development. That's one thing I didn't consider.
It does offer most everything I want in a smart watch and in my opinion it's the better looking of the ones that I have seen.
Which one did you place a order for? I put one in for the Curve.

I like them but I think I will wait as I reckon they will release one soon with the coloured e ink display like the Qualcomm Toq. I do like the idea of private calls though just wish they had used a coloured display that will give days before charging.
I ordered the Curve also, it looks more sleek than the others and you have to admit , at half the price of the newly released Galaxy Gear, it's worth it. The galaxy gear is very nice looking , does it all but with a charge that will only last 24 hr and a price tag of $300, I think the Hot watch will be more than a good purchase . I will definitely consider Apple's smart watch when it comes out. It will probably be the priciest of all the mainstream smart watches but hopefully it will last longer on a single charge and look great.Cant wait!! Should be interesting. Does anyone think this is just a fad or will smart watches be around for awhile. Smart phone display screens have been getting bigger, can we live with a smaller screen?
I originally funded the curve as well.
I reduced my pledge to no reward yesterday however.
I feel that the Qualcomm Toq is a better smartwatch, and will be getting that instead.
The color always-on Marisol display is superior to the black and white of the HOT. And the purported UI of the HOT looks primitive compared to the simple yet functional of the Toq's
And the private calling of the HOT feels more like a gimmick that a practical feature.
There appears to be better overall design thinking on the Toq; real practical features designed for real world use.
Wishing the HOT team the best of luck.

I think they are here to stay and will start catching on like wildfire over the next few years. Especially once the technology starts mature and we start seeing the flexible OLED screens make a appearance.
I don't see it ever completely replacing the smartphone phone, at least not in the near future. I think it will stay a device that merely compliments your smartphone.

This is my first Kickstarter funding and will be my first smartwatch. I'm getting the Edge. Being 8mm thick was the selling point for me. Most of the others are at least 20mm thick, which seems unwieldy. I hope the company pulls it off and the watch is what we want it to be.

To me a smartwatch should be able it interact with your smart house, smart (insert appliance here) and various other host smart devices. Until it does it's a remote for your phone and not much else.

You are right, I was way off about thickness. I was thinking of some of the ones that can make phone calls that are huge. Nevertheless, the Hot Watch is still the thinnest. Galaxy Gear is 11mm.

Why would you say that the Hot watch is feature limited, it has more than the Pebble which has had huge success . Granted it is not a stand alone like Samsung which has its own disadvantages , and if you ask me, having a camera on your watch is just creepy !!

I did fund the Pebble on kickstarter and was one of the folks whose pebble got bricked after a firmware update.
Sure, they sent me a new one, and I gave that one to my boss.
I didn't consider the pebble a true smartwatch either. I have had lots of wearables through the years; Sony's LiveWatch, 5 Spot watches, 2 SonyEricsson Bluetooth watches.
The Toq is closer to being an all around smartwatch. Low power, daylight legible display, touchscreen, no gimmicks, and a phone companion.

Ok, IMO, if you are willing to pay $300 for a Toq, you might as well get the new Samsung. It is a stand alone smartwatch. It is said that Qualcomm is just putting its toe into smart watches to try to sell its reflective screen technology, which Ive read has been problematic. They are only introducing 10 000 units on the market whereas Samsung will be flooding the market with 500 000 units a much more serious player who plans on staying around for a while and will invest in their product. That's if you want to spend $300 for a smart watch. I believe that the Hot watches' nice style will be a wearable piece even after the smart watch fad is over, as per "them". Maybe " they " are right are right and it will be just a fad but no one can predict the future .

Now I've read the "stand alone" and "can make calls" about the Samsung in a ton of places. Has anybody seen anything official about this? You know, something like GSM/CDMA bands. I've been digging through every bit of info I can find (read- google search results page 20+) and have found nothing regarding GSM or CDMA support. That would be kind of key to be able to make calls and sync data on it's own.

To me a smartwatch should be able it interact with your smart house, smart (insert appliance here) and various other host smart devices. Until it does it's a remote for your phone and not much else.

IMO , I don't think it is so much of a smart watch issue as much as it is an App issue for the smart appliance people to put out to control their smart appliancets. We can control many appliances with our smart phones because the manufacturers have put out apps for them. When and if the smart watches get as popular as cell phones , then they will do what it takes to be compatible with their products, they will have to if they want to market their product properly

Apparently this was said at their release of the Samsung smart watch. I know of another smart watch that says in print that is is a stand alone, it will use 2g and 3g on American frequencies and European, it's called Omate.

I stand corrected , Samsung's Gear is not being marketed as a stand alone watch , but Omate is
Well, the Kickstarter campaign has ended and they raised more than 4 times as much as they sought, so it's been a success financially. Now we get to wait 3 months and see if they can really pull it off. My fingers are crossed.

Even more smartwatches to add to the confusion

Here is a list of smartwatches from SHENZHEN HOP INDUSTRIALCO.,LTD. It contains four Android based smartwatches (EC308, EC309, EC408 and EC409).
Google Docs does not format correctly so download for proper viewing.
I will let you know now that Orsto were trying to pass off the Dynamic (EC309) and Bliss (EC316) models as their own on a crowdfunding site. They are still trying to pass off the Bliss (EC316) as an Orsto product.
*I am not trying to sell any of these devices. This is the only full catalog I have for Hopu devices and posted it for reference purposes only.
Thats the one thing I don't like about crowd funding sites; too easy for some scammer to pass off these wholesale products as their own.
Here is the "A.I Smartwatch," aka the Ec308/309. Whats funny is their marketing images don't even consistently show the same watch
Is it just me, or don't these things look pretty hideous?
Ripping off windows mobile start screens, with a generous dose of kitsch added? The watch faces look particularly scary. I guess there isn't going to be an Omate style stretch goal face off, lol.

I don't even see Orsto X1 on IGG anymore. Was it even fully or partially funded?

I publicly posted on their FB page that it is an EC308/309. Also posted that it doesn't come with official Play Store support as the "inventor" claims.
UPDATE- AI Watch just deleted my comment and locked their FB post. Truth hurts

They got pulled from IGG. That's why Orsto is over on another crowdfunding site claiming another smartwatch as theirs.

Since they weren't on KS or IGG, which site are they on? But either way, what a scam! Hopefully by now consumers are more educated about smartwatches and these crooks will never get fully funded. Only those with true innovation get word of mouth which drives success of crowdfunding.
Thanks for that pdf info. For sure EC308/309 and EC408/409 looks interesting. What I noticed is their x09 versions add an option for tri-band WCDMA. I tried googling the subject and majority of answers point to not compatible with Verizon. Most likely its a same chipset as used by Omate. Kind of sad that I'm stuck with Verizon...

Btw, the guy behind AI Swartwatch campaign is starting to spam forums with "hey, look at this cool new smartphone". Already been spotted on AndroidForums where his post got deleted and he was banned. I would not be surprised if he is going to show up on XDA lol!!!
Looks like he some how got a story on Engaget. Guessing one or two of you guys are on there. http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/29/ai-android-smartwatch-indiegogo/ He's trying to claim he is using the EC309 as a shell/prototype.
I already bought this smartwatch here http://www.watchmobilephone.com/vapirius_ax2.htm as a Vapirius AX2. It's not bad but it is missing a menu button pretty badly. There is some kind of soft menu button in the notification area but it is a gimmick...

Not according to my conversation with him. "the hardware are not close to the Ec309"
He also seems to be of the opinion that a custom ROM makes it a completely different device.

lol, thanks for the morning laugh.
I'm just here to say I just backed a new smartwatched called 'AI'... Haha just kidding, I actually pre-ordered the Neptune Pine.
Seriously though, with all the scamming surrounding smartwatches. I'm actually glad I held back from backing Omate. Sad but true. I haven't seen them immerse the omate in water. I haven't even seen them demonstrate "the running of various apps" to determine whether their claim that 90% of the play store actually worked with their device. I have the motoactv for reference, but even this device has flaws running certain apps, especially bluetooth related ones. In certain apps you can't see everything because of screen size, others simply wont run and force closes etc etc. Needless to say, i still love my motoactv.
Omate has shown a working prototype and has even done live interviews (cnbc), but I remain skeptical. Where is the hole for the microphone and speaker located? How well can the other person hear you? For reference, I know Omate did a demo of a phone call, but within the demo you could actually hear the caller nearby if you listen closely. I have faith in omate, but i cant say i have strong faith. I won't be surprised if the product releases later than expected. And if it doesn't release at all, I won't be surprised, but i hope that it actually gets released so i could get my grubby hands on this awesome concept of a product.
@savaged: Wait, with all the info and discussions about Omate vs Neptune Pine, you suggesting Omate is scamming us and thus you decided to fund Pine?!? Honestly, this is the first one I heard so far on XDA or anywhere else... Unless you pulling our legs, Good luck!

lol no, I'm not funding Neptune Pine, it was a joke. After observing the Omate discussions, I realize that Neptune Pine is highly likely to be vaporware. And well, from the looks of it, Omate isn't scamming anyone. I'm just a bit disappointed with them. They aren't showing off their goods properly. It leaves a lot of room for skepticism. Just like everyone else, I'm pretty anxious to see it.

Did you preorder via the website or pledge on Indiegogo? If you pledged on Indiegogo you can always cancel your pledge. As far as the images, here is a direct link to one of the original images.

I did a hands-on (in german) of the EC308 or Vapirius AX2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzbaRG8wslM&feature=c4-overview&list=UUjLvP7zL2M8-9AtRtQ4gUCw
If fact, a good SmartWatch. BUT the inpout is horrible. Using Fleksy-Keyboard is better, but does not work if you rae using german language
Will do a longer review soon.
I'd like to ask, does anyone have any info about the Hopu EC408/EC409 models? Do they really ship (or - from where - I only found something on alibaba.com with not much info to it -> anyone have any experience there?). I'm quite surprised that there is no review/no youtube demonstration of them etc. I've been looking into 'smart watch phones' for quite some time and these look the best for me - especially I like the fact that it can be detached from the strap (or so it seems from images) - unlike devices like O. Truesmart / Callisto 100... which have antennas in their straps.
So, pls, does anyone know something more to these 'watches'? (or do you know about sth. similar to them?)
(Maybe, is there some list of watches like this? I wrote down a few for my future reference:
with 2G/3G functionality:
omate truesmart
Iconbit Callisto 100
xTouch Wave
burg 17
zgpax S5
Hopu EC409
sWaP (Hopu?) EC308/EC309
A.I. Watch
Exetech XS-3
Pearl Simvalley AW-414/AW-420/AW-421
without sim slot:
galaxy gear
motorola motoactv
sony smartwatch 2
smartQ Z Watch
I'm watch
geak watch
uplay z3
