The first smartwatch which inspired others? - Other SmartWatches

Anybody still remember this guy...
Sent from my HTC Desire C

I, personally, don't remember that guy, but, maybe, if you'd give us more details, we could talk about it. Maybe somebody even has it.

It's the iPod nano 6th generation that came out in 2010
Sent from my HTC Desire C

I'm sorry to tell you, but that didn't start anything.
Starting from wikipedia, I found out the Seiko Data 2000, which is probably the first smartwatch.
If you dig deeper you can find that this whole smartwatch idea is pretty old, it's just tat now it turned into something else. And, as somebody around here was saying (don't remember who, can't quote), I'm waiting for the day when a tiny device in my ear will signal me that my watch is showing me a notification from my phone.

Hahaha....
Sent from my HTC Desire C

I think the iPod Nano really brought the idea into the mainstream - just like Apple did with tablets. They didn't invent it - but they got it enough speaking time for people to get interested.
I had a Nano watch, but that was before I had a smartphone. Now that I have a smartphone, I don't really need a tiny music player since the phone serves as one.
"Smart watches" are a solid idea, but I don't see any reason to add another gadget back in that I've effectively gotten rid of and no longer need to carry. I'm sure they'll work for some people, I've just never been a watch person.

i think that the perfect smartwatch will be perfect with google glasses

When is google glasses releasing?

I'm afraid I have to disagree. I think Sony Ericsson really made them popular. I always wanted one of these but could never justify the cost. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Ericsson-MBW-150-Bluetooth-Executive/dp/B000YD9MFM
One day I'll have the smart watch I've always envisioned.

kinda suspicious that it looks a lot like this doesnt it?
engadget.com/2009/10/16/lg-gd910-watch-phone-review
in my opinion the first legit easy to use touchscreen smartwatch. It even functions as a 'james bond' style phone =P
all apple is good at is marketing, and scraping ideas of the internet together in a nice cover.
'bout the tablets, the company archos had 'ipads' before the ipad.

Only thing I heard that didn't come from the rumor mill was "before the end of 2013". I'm actually wondering more about the price than the release date. For the sake of staying on topic...
I never owned a nano/nano watch but I agree with Pennycake. Apple is good at making ideas mainstream.

I wouldn't classify an mp3 player as a smart-anything... And I've got one!
It also did not come with a watch band initially (you had to buy it separately), meaning it wasn't intended to be a watch in the first place. I hope that makes sense.

Smartglasses... No comment... The name itself is a joke...

Why have a watch that tells you when your phones ringing, when you can have a watch that is your phone.
For under $100 some of these have the same features as my old LX600 LG Lotus multi-media flip phone(one of my favorites).
They have also gotten down to a reasonable watch size.

You beat me to it!
As you said, having the ipod nano on your wrist is like having an mp3 player on your wrist, period. It doesn't connect to your smart phone, it doesn't do anything a smart phone does, and it wasn't even sold as a watch. I know exactly what it does cause I still have mine, except it's now a part of my ~$250 alarm clock setup (yes, that's right, although that wasn't the original intention..)

Can u exactly tell me watt is your alarm clock setup?

Off Topic = What do you think of the new dual screen phone engadget was previewing?

I thought it was kinda neat at first. I almost wanted one then I started thinking about it and looking at the pictures and video. I saw the hinge on it and how thin it was and I knew that might break easily.
I don't really know what new kind of phone would make me want to get another one. A tablet seems like a neat toy, but after my epic experience, I will not buy another samsung device. I read that there was a rumor about htc getting into the tablet market. That might interest me. I don't want to get another account for it though. I would want a wifi only model. If I couldn't get that then I guess I would get a regular one and only use it on wifi and not 3g.
I saw the new motorola tablet too but I ain't paying around 800 for that! Yeah I could get it cheaper on a contract but I don't want to go that route. I'd just use wifi tether from my shift for the tablet and maybe just keep the phone in my pocket.

Tablets are nice. I've got an iPad from work, and it's replaced about 80% of my laptop usage. The Motorola Xoom looks like it'd be REALLY nice, but the price is just too outrageous, not to mention it sounded like there was a requirement of getting at least a 1 month plan on Verizon in order to use WiFi at all. I'd love it if HTC got into the market with a nice, solid tablet. Something with plenty of metal on it the way most of their phones are.
Bulky
Looks nice, but a bit bulky. Looks to be several inches deep and not comfortable for everyday carry, at least for me.
As for tablets, I have an unofficial 7" Chinese android tablet that I love. The processor is a bit slow, but I bought it mostly for Internet surfing and book reading which it does well.
the new Echo is an interesting idea, but i think most of us who went with the shift won't give up a physical keyboard for two displays.
as for tablets, if you want a cheap and functional tablet, see if you can get your hands on a Nook Color, then head over to the nook forums and see about rooting it, turning it into a fully functional android tablet
$249 for the nook and a few hours getting it set up and off you go.
I am personally not impressed with the dual screen phones. I think they look stupid and I will never trade in my HW Keyboard. I have big hands and the keyboard makes it so much easier to type.
Total garbage.

I won't go that far as I'll never play with one to formulate an opinion.
Kyocera + Nintendo DS clone...
To hell with it. Since when has Kyocera EVER made a phone that was even enjoyable for anything besides phone calls (if even?)
Although, video calls could be pretty sweet if they actually take advantage of both screens. Actually have a big enough preview of yourself to see if anything embarrassing is laying around!

Agreed, I see it as much more of a gimick than anything.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
To me it looks awkward and I just wouldn't trust Kyocera.
Very interesting concept and if it shows promise I'm sure HTC, LG, Moto, or Samsung will give it a go.
Apple will probably come out with it and act like they invented it. Then all the Appholes will parade around with dual screen iPhones.
I just happened to stumble across info for the nook color and rooting it and adding stuff to it. It looks kinda interesting. 250 for a wifi version and I'm guessing some time rooting and adding programs. Not too bad. It seems not as powerful as a regular tablet but you can't complain about the price.
Hmmmmm
I did consider getting the Echo by trading in the Shift within the return period, but meh. Too late now anyways. I have a feeling there won't be that much dev work on it if for no other reason than it's made by Kyocera which has little to no third party support as it is on their existing line.
Kyocera is a joke. This phone might appeal to a small market but holy **** it's ugly. And to think it was Sprint's big announcement... an even bigger joke. Wow. It's like Sprint WANTS to lose customers (bumping prices, cutting benefits, no amazing phones to lure people in). Sad, really.

Switch to iPhone 4?

Good day all,
I've had my Galaxy S II for about 2 months now and I love how it works.
But still, it seems that my hands are a bit too small to type good with just 1 hand..
Therefore I was thinking of getting it replaced with an iPhone 4.
Now I was wondering if you guys think I would regret it?
The thing I'm most worried about is the speed of the web browsing. Is it really that slow on the iPhone that I will have to wait much longer than on Galaxy S II?
Also, does anyone know if I can get text reflow on iPhone when I jailbreak it?
Thank you very much already for any answers.
Kind regards,
Hybbie

If you really wont to switch to iOS i'd wait till the iPh*** 5/4s comes out, rather than buying the old model...
EDIT: in terms of web-browsing, it isn't that much slower! (if you can live w/o flash...) iOS runs DAMN fast, even on bad hardware! (i compared my lovely SGS 2 to a friends iP4...)
Try Swype and you will forget about iPhones all together....
Yeah, I think you should switch.
To be honest only you can answer this. I personally would regret it. But that's because I've owned 3 android phones. I had the zte blade first, then the awful wildfire, and now this! Certainly my best phone. When i look at an iphone i think yeah it does some good stuff but is so bland.
No widgets and your rammed with apple stuff and forced to do things the apple way if your not willing to jail break the device.
Android devices are customizable out of the box and allow you to play about with how it looks straight away.
Like i said its solely down to you we are all going to favour each device in some way and the majority likely to follow the good ol S2! Anyway regarding the size surely its of a similar height/width?!?

Why would you ever switch from the Blade to the Wildfire? That's a straight downgrade.
iOS is great if you're fine with having only icons on your screen... iPhone 4 still wins display clarity IMO... but GS2 has richer colours.
browsing isn't that bad on iPhone but it is noticeably faster on GS2... antenna is better.
I agree... wait for iPhone 5\4Gs whatever they call it.
Apple products are all overpriced pieces of Sh*t. Don't bother with it.
You will lose a lot of normal functions (Bluetooth as an example. Has to go trough Itunes or something like that -.-'')
Just get a keyboard that suits you better. Swype should be included.
As a person that sells phone here's my thoughts... iPhone stunning design and well easy to use. But this is where it ends as HTC etc have android now its easy to use but look at the way it does things... syncing android is instant with Gmail, plug it into pc it turns into a external hard drive/memory card drag and drop any file you want to it from any pc of Mac.
Bluetooth isn't just for audio.
You can customize it all day and all night uses a micro USB cable everywhere has one. Memory cards not built in memory. Give you a idea in the shop where I work we sell around 55 contracts a week and since the first week of Jan we have only sold 4 iphones. That is a very low number as of android handsets we have done say 75% of all contract sold

Drowned my blade in coca cola...
It was a sad day! Insurance couldn't give me a new blade and i unfortunately chose a wildfire all the while wishing i had tried my luck for a desire!
Thank you all for your answers.
I think I'm at least going to wait until the new iphone comes out then.
After that, I'll have to see like everyone else hours it stands against GSII.
Thanks again!

I agree with everything above. Again, it boils down to what is important for you. I also thought about iPhone 4, but SGS II prevailed big time, due to things I do with it. You can copy music, videos, pictures any time, hassle free. Really. I never really felt comfortable working with iTunes, never knew what stuff would be deleted. Big argument for me also was the ability to copy and play divx files without needing to convert. I watch loads of movies; just copy to phone and you're good to go. It's a cheesy line really, but think what you plan to do with it.
I went with SGS II and do not regret.

If you dont mind the boring walls of icons then youll be fine with the iPhone 4 which has better battery life and gps and the apps to boot.
You'll be missing things like the filesystem and the tweaking on the SGS2 though
Don't forget the loss of flash and better media playback.

Something that made me mad today

I was in my anatomy and physiology class today, and I had my iconia with me. I was on Google body and splashtop hd, when a kid behind me asked what tablet I had. So I told him and then he said oh and then pulled out is icrap and started messing around with it showing the person next to him all the things it does. About 20 mins later, the guy that he was showing his pad to asked him, "why is the kids( my iconia) is faster and what is the difference". And then I hear the guy with the I pad say, "oh that's a android tablet, its for poorer people who can't afford an ipad. Its like a cheep mockup. Its not faster it just seems like it because it only runs simple corny apps." He knew I heard him, he said it deliberately. I wanted to blow up after I heard him say that. >:-o

I would have either stalked him after class in order to kick his ass, plugged my thumb drive into my Iconia, or simple said that iPads are for people too stupid to use Android.

Why lower yourself to this persons level? If he wants to believe his iPad is the bees knees, let him. Just show those same folks the difference when he's not around and let them decide for themselves.
It has been my observation for some time now that while there are some people who use Apple and iOS purely for functionality, so much of the time it is about having the "in" thing and being able to show off to others. It is not that the iPad is better at all, it because it is like a fashion statement. This anecdotal tale reveals just one more example of it. People think they are hot snot on a silver platter but in the end they just show they are nothing more then cold buggers on a paper plate.

This happened to me, although unintentionally. I was somewhere with my cousin, where he already had wifi set up on the local hotspot, but I didn't. Someone else asked us to look up a web page, and naturally it took me a little longer cause I had to put in the wifi credentials.
Well, it turns out, he couldn't load the page cause it was mostly flash. I could. I wasn't smug, because he had already acknowledged that android was the superior product. Back when he bought his, iPad was the only viable option. He is also the type to technologically draw within the lines, so ipad fits his needs perfectly.
I've had the Mac vs non-Mac agrument before with other people, though. The sad thing is, you will never win this argument with reason. Mac addiction is akin to religious zealotry; they will go to any length or rational to justify the position that a Mac product is superior.
In addition to that, Mac simply has better brand recognition. You can build a tablet that is faster, thinner, lighter, better in every way and half the price; people will still walk right past it at the store because they want the one with the Mac logo.
They want to be able to tell their friends they have an iPad.
I've noticed that android phones are getting a little more public recognition now, though. This is anecdotal, but I've noticed that when I pull out my Samsung phone, most people know it's an android and can draw the distinction between android and iphone. I don't imagine it will be long before android tablets get the same treatment.
Give it time.
I don't know about you guys, but I don't have any problems finding apps on this thing. Sure there aren't as many as the iPad but after a while all you get are 50 versions of the exact same thing.
One thing I should point out is that there STILL isn't a facebook app for the iPad. There is one for the iPhone but no tablet optimized version yet, and after how long since the first iPad came out?
If I were you I would show him a random cool flash site and ask him to go to it on his ipad so we can see how it scales up(or smth like that) and when he fails at loading it I would laugh my ass off.
If I were you, I will not care at all. My Tablet serves me fine and I don't care about what others are using. I use the tools I need, not the tools others need, and for me Android is being fine. I use to have an iPad and it wouldn't adapt to my needs, so I got ride of it. Nothing wrong about the iPad, simply it didn't fill my needs. I'm not married to an OS, whatever it will be iOS, Android, WebOS, Windows8. I can't switch easily to another table if I find a reason to do it. I don't care about the OS but about the applications and be able to use all my potential with the tablet.
So enjoy your tablet, continue with life and don't pay attention to the background noise.

Assuming you're talking about the Z1 (Rock) watch, there's a comparison for that right here.
A "true" smart watch runs on a smart phone platform. 99% of those chinese phone watches run feature phone platforms, in otherwords, they're dumbphones. The one and only chinese phone watch that uses a smart platform (Android) is the Z1. It's ok, but crap screen, slow processor, and huge physical size are major downsides. Also, it's closer to $250, definitely not under $100 (or I'd have one right now just for ****s and giggles, lol)

Of course I'd end up going back to the motactv, because I mean come one, it's underclocked 1ghz arm v7 processor just slays the other two.

I used one of these watches in the past and it was pure junk. Didn't think I'd go for another 'smart watch' but I decided to try out the Pebble watch. Of course the difference being the Pebble only connected to my main phone, which I preferred. The Pebble is just good enough to view notifications. I chose the Note 2's large screen for a reason... so I wouldn't have to dial on a small screen.
Would love to have a pebble watch

I almost bought a MotoACTV... but got a 6th gen nano and watch strap because fashion.
Anyway, I've seen 10s of Chinese/Singaporean watches and most are BREW or JAVA. Smart enough for some. My current favorite is the sWaP Nova because you can wear it as a necklace.
Awesome

Read some reviews on Amazon...not the greatest generally

Those are really just feature phones, trimmed down to watch-size with small screen and a microscopic keypad (not to mention, a 250 mAh battery).
It's not very bad actually; but it is better to spend some cash on a real feature phone.

Tried posting this yesterday but XDA went down in between me browsing to this post, and pressing reply. Needless to say I said fack it and did other things instead.
But now I'm back browsing the net, so here you are.

They'd be good and cheap to try before spending any decent money on one.

Teenager beats tech giants to launch world's first smart WATCH

I assume everyone saw this article - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencet...art-WATCH-makes-calls-comes-built-camera.html. What an achievement ahead of the main companies fighting for this area of the market. The watch looks like it has been designed well from the images, allbeit perhaps a little large. The price of £150 seems extremely reasonable. Let me know your thoughts.

That's the Z1 Rock watch, or a clone of it. Literally almost identical. Check the specs on my site here. It's very very old news, and was not the first device to run a standalone OS, or even the first to run android.
Is it neat? Sure. It's also HUGE though, and runs an older version of Android than the ACTV, which came out before this one. As for the price, currently, 150 pounds equates to about 227 US dollars, and for that price, I'd rather have the actv I think.
"Teenager tries to take credit for someone elses Smart Watch"
There, fixed the title. This is an open source (I guess that's what they call it) watch body. The chinese company makes the watch, buyers who commit to massive quantities can choose color, logo, and name to sell as their own.
This watch in the past has been branded as the Z1 watch and the Vega Watch. It's not new..at all. And it's quite frankly not a very good watch phone. As ClearD was talking about the Motoactv just slays this thing in terms of power.
Is this the same as Neptune Pine? http://www.neptunepine.com/product.html
Eitherway, its a wrist phone, not a smart watch. The whole idea of smart watch is to be a remote extension of the smart phone, not a replacement of it. You get notification, and decide if you want to act on it. In my opinion, wrist watch is a different category. Beside, I'm not sure if I would find it too healthy to wear most of the day 3G receiver/transmitter on my wrist with all that electromagnetic waves circulation At least with my smart phone its either on a dash board mount in the car when I'm driving, or the desk away from me when I'm at work, or somewhere on a table at home. Smart watch is just a bluetooth gadget
Nah, the Neptune pine is way better. Like... In every aspect. Lol

I would not mind trying it out if a developer helps out. Not on AT&T so how useful the phone would be is something I am uncertain about.

The Neptune Pine looks too good to be true and smells like vaporware.
