[Q] goo manager problems - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'm running smoothrom and Franco kernel, I have goo manager and wanted to try a few different ROMs. When I go download a ROM from goomanager , it always says grouper instead of tilapia. Should I be concerned? What should I do?
Thanks!

Depends on what device you have. You should just download them from here on XDA.

Hi, GegRobinson....
You don't specify what type of Nexus 7 you have, but reading between the lines, I'll assume you have a 3G+WiFi 'tilapia' Nexus 7.
In which case, then yes, you should be concerned.... a WiFi only 'grouper' custom ROM will lack the the necessary 'radio' component to make it work properly. (You won't have 3G).
This question has been asked before, here, which is worth a read.
For some reason, there appears to be a paucity of custom ROMs for the 3G variant of the Nexus 7, but there are some here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2022
Having a WiFi only 'grouper' device myself, I can't make any comments on the merits (or otherwise) of these custom ROMs, so I guess you'll just have to try a few out for yourself.
Good luck.

[Q] Risk of flashing Grouper ROM/recovery to Tilapia

Can anyone explain the risk of flashing a Grouper recovery image and a Grouper ROM to the Tilapia? I hardly ever use 3G and there are a lot more ROM's to choose from for the Grouper.
So it this safe to do or is there a chance I damage it?

Hi, I also like to know about the effect of this as well. I assume I can simply flash a grouper rom, then just flash the tilapia's radio.img separately, I know the recoveries are also different. But can grouper kernel work on tilapia too (looks like it from my search) and are the partition scheme 'similar' on both so I don't damage anything?
In anycase, I'm settled since there are plenty of roms for the tilapia, but I still like to make sure.

No big risk because a well designed ROM for grouper will never install on a Tilapia device. Useless you trick prop files?
What's for? A well designed Tilapia Rom should have the same features and behavior as a grouper one....
Just install grouper version of TWRP. This will allow u to flash grouper roms. I have no need for 3g so this is what I have done. No problems

[Q] Help a complete noob flash Nex 7 please ;)

HI All,
Long time lurker
I get a bit overwhelmed with rooting / flashing and such but yesterday i received my RMA Nexus 4 and decided to give it a crack as it was a fresh start.
Used CF-Root on my Nexus 4, then i flashed Paranoid Android (v3) using Rom Manager (both excellent bits of software and really easy to use) i was so impressed with Paranoid Android (love the tablet mode) so decided to give it a go on my Nexus 7
Used CF-Root again and unlocked boot loader and rooted ok, installed Rom Manger and booted to recovery but it gave me errors when i attempted to load Paranoid Android so i exited and now back just stock software.
I used the same ROM for Paranoid Android that i used for the Nexus 4, i wasn't able to fine a specific build for the Nexus 7 so assumed that they use the same ROM? i now think i was wrong but cant find a specific ROM for my Nexus 7
Would someone be kind enough to tell me if i do need a different build for the Nexus 7 and also if i need a different GAAPS download?
Thanks in advance and sorry if this has been posted before, so much conflicting information and out of date links around the web, i just wanted to be sure.
Cheers
Steve

All I did when I got my Nexus 7 was downloaded the Toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
Use that and run the "All-in-One" unlock, recovery, root, busybox etc.
Note: Technically all you really needed was a custom recovery to stick and you can flash a custom rom, but I like to run the All-In-One just in case.
As for the rom, you should not flash another device's rom. Only use the one designated for your specific device. Flashing another device's will likely brick/bootloop your current device.
To make things easier, think of it like this:
Custom Roms likely already have root privileges, so flashing them automatically gives u root access. In order to flash a custom rom, you simply need a recovery like CWM or TWRP. You can achieve that however you like, but the Toolkit is easiest in my opinion.
When you flash a rom, read the requirements on the thread. It should be as easy as wiping Cache/Dalvik/Data, Flash Rom, Flash GAPPS, Flash Kernel if you want to, Flash Multi DPI Play Store if you change dpi of your apps, then reboot.
Paranoid android thread of nexus 7 is HERE, ROM is available for both grouper and tilapia.
+1 on aria807. Nexus toolkit is great for beginners and is very error proof. I've since moved onto fastboot and abd command line, but I still use the tool kit to restore to stock because its fast and easy. Damn program even downloads the images for you.

Hi, neo45215...
I think you're good go to directly... the only thing that flashing a Custom ROM won't update is the Bootloader. This currently stands at v4.23... if memory serves me correctly the Bootloader with Jellybean 4.2.1 was either v4.13 or v4.18. I strongly suspect it was v4.18.
Anyway, whatever the Bootloader version number is, I'm not sure it matters that much when it comes to flashing Custom ROMs.
I'm surprised though, you haven't received an OTA update bringing your Nexus 7 up to date with Jellybean 4.3 (which will also update the Bootloader to v4.23).
Anyway, good luck with PA... (was never much of a fan - too 'overcooked' and gimmicky for my bare-bones minimalist tastes)... but, as they say... each to their own.

Ahh... you have a 'tilapia' Nexus 7... and it won't allow OTA downloads over a 3G network. Did not know that. I have a 'grouper' Nexus 7 myself, so everything I do HAS to be done over WiFi.
I'm not sure if one can extrapolate from a completely different device to another... but on my Samsung Galaxy S3, there is an option in...
SETTINGS>>ABOUT DEVICE>>SOFTWARE UPDATE>>WIFI ONLY
The WIFI ONLY checkbox is 'ticked' by default. By clearing this checkbox, I can now receive OTA updates on my Samsung via the 3G cellular network....
Maybe there is a similar setting/checkbox on your 'tilapia' Nexus 7.
--------------
And as for PA.... give it a try! Lots of people like it, and it's up there with Cyanogenmod as being one of the most popular of Custom ROMs. Just saying it wasn't to my taste. And that's the thing about Custom ROMs - what appeals to one person, will most decidedly not appeal to another.

well ....flashed PA....and it was overwhelming!!.....ended up flashing stock 4.3....:silly:...and about that wifi workaround..cant seem to find that option in my device...
Also 1 more question ...everywhere i read it said that to get into bootloader/recovery i had to press both volm + and volm - with the power botton .....but funnily for my device it doesnt work.....i tried many times and today i accidentally only pressed the volm - with the power and voila!!...into the bootoader!!...is that normal...any ideas??

What recovery to use?

Hey. I am relatively new to the nexus 7 atmosphere, but have plenty of experience with the original kindle fire, and Android workings. My question is do I want TWRP or do I want CWM as a recovery. On my kf I had TWRP because I don't like the look of CWM, so I was wondering which I should do for the N7. It appears that some ROMs are built specifically for one or the other, so I was wondering which is a more popular/better choice.
Also, as a side note, I see lots of posts on kernels. I never had to deal with this on the kf, so can someone give me the lowdown on what a kernel does for a ROM?
Thank you in advance.

i am using twrp recovery at the moment on N7 altho i hav used the cm recovery on my older phone...both worked fine for me....also i have never come across any Rom specifically requesting any recovery...altho i have heard that the new kitkat roms are working on twrp ryt nw...
about the kernel..think of it as the conduit between your hardware and your software...put simply it helps your software (android) to interact with your hardware (n7) to give the output.

How to identify the correct ROM or Kernel?

I just recently got a Nexus 7(2012) 3G: Asus Tablet. In CPU-Z it shows that it is called the "grouper"
What should I look for or how will I know which ROM to flash for my 3G version of Asus Nexus 7(2012)?
In the "Nexus 7 Android Development" section their are ROMs which mentions "grouper" but how will I know if it means the 3G version or the non-3G version?
I know that their is already a separate section called "Nexus 7 3G Android Development"
I am trying to understand if flashing the ROMs from the "Nexus 7 Android Development" instead of "Nexus 7 3G Android Development" will disable the 3G function or will it work like it does using the stock ROM?
Grouper is the wifi, non 3g version.

That is exactly what I was thinking. If grouper is the non-3g one and my Nexus can use a SIM card for 3G, shouldn't it be called "tilapia"?
Yes, sound's like someone flashed the wrong ROM, or they didn't have a sim anyway.
@pleomaxell I have the same Nexus as you. I haven't done much with mine other than root the device and force it to stay on 4.3. At one time I had L on it but it ran so miserably slow I backed it down. I'm wanting to resurrect mine and start using it for work. Development has mostly been for the Grouper model, even the one's that say Tilapia. Maybe we can exchange info.

I just flashed the [ROM] 6.0 Android MarshMallow Pure AOSP for Google Nexus 7 2012 WIFI+3G ROM and 3G is working properly without any problems. You can give it a try.
