How to identify the correct ROM or Kernel? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just recently got a Nexus 7(2012) 3G: Asus Tablet. In CPU-Z it shows that it is called the "grouper"
What should I look for or how will I know which ROM to flash for my 3G version of Asus Nexus 7(2012)?
In the "Nexus 7 Android Development" section their are ROMs which mentions "grouper" but how will I know if it means the 3G version or the non-3G version?
I know that their is already a separate section called "Nexus 7 3G Android Development"
I am trying to understand if flashing the ROMs from the "Nexus 7 Android Development" instead of "Nexus 7 3G Android Development" will disable the 3G function or will it work like it does using the stock ROM?

Grouper is the wifi, non 3g version.

That is exactly what I was thinking. If grouper is the non-3g one and my Nexus can use a SIM card for 3G, shouldn't it be called "tilapia"?

Yes, sound's like someone flashed the wrong ROM, or they didn't have a sim anyway.

@pleomaxell I have the same Nexus as you. I haven't done much with mine other than root the device and force it to stay on 4.3. At one time I had L on it but it ran so miserably slow I backed it down. I'm wanting to resurrect mine and start using it for work. Development has mostly been for the Grouper model, even the one's that say Tilapia. Maybe we can exchange info.

I just flashed the [ROM] 6.0 Android MarshMallow Pure AOSP for Google Nexus 7 2012 WIFI+3G ROM and 3G is working properly without any problems. You can give it a try.

ICS on 9020A

I'm considering buying a used NS 9020A and was wondering if ICS will officially be supported on this model.
Is it possible to manually flash ICS if no OTA is ever available ?
Possible, but you'll need a custom recovery. Either way you will need that as you'll be wanting to change the radio driver.

It is definitely coming so you don't need to install custom recovery unless you don't want stock.
Just hold out a touch longer. Now that 4.0.4 is in the pipe I have a feeling real updates will resume soon.
How to find NEXUS S model#
Someone offered me a used NEXUS S originated in the UK.
On the box the model is listed as I9020. no A nor T.
How can find the actual model ? I need to know if 850 band is supported by the hardware (UMTS)
In my case the i9020a model number is found on a label under the battery compartment.

I don't think 9020T supports 850, just 1300/2000(then again I could be wrong)

If it does not have 9020a on the label under the battery it does not have the 850 band for AT&T.

I have this model and as you can plainly see I am running a custom ICS* ROM. I don't understand why you would want stock ICS. It is buggy, slower, and the battery drain is significant. Flashing custom ROMs would be much better . There is a port for the 4.0.4 version already available
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
CyberGR Hybrid ICS (v6)
Eugene's Kernel (Speedy-7)
OC 1100/100 (ondemandx)

[Q] newbie

Hi guys, Just made it after 6 Years with an iphone and iOS i moved on to Android got myself a nexus 4
im still struggling with the android.
just wanted to know what is the latest pacman rom for nexus 4? and where can i download it?
cause i could only find packman rom 23 for note II.(maybe i can install this one on my nexus 4?)

This is where PACman rom is. Stick with Android. You will never look back. And if you BADLY want IOS back, MIUI gives a similar experience.

Before doing any modifications to your phone, get to know android, read the wiki's about terminology and how stuff work around here. You'll be doing yourself a big favor, and escaping a potential "Help-i bricked my device" thread. You can't flash roms from other devices.
One more tip, post questions in the Q&A section, you'll get better support and answers there.

[Q] goo manager problems

Hello,
I'm running smoothrom and Franco kernel, I have goo manager and wanted to try a few different ROMs. When I go download a ROM from goomanager , it always says grouper instead of tilapia. Should I be concerned? What should I do?
Thanks!
Depends on what device you have. You should just download them from here on XDA.

Hi, GegRobinson....
You don't specify what type of Nexus 7 you have, but reading between the lines, I'll assume you have a 3G+WiFi 'tilapia' Nexus 7.
In which case, then yes, you should be concerned.... a WiFi only 'grouper' custom ROM will lack the the necessary 'radio' component to make it work properly. (You won't have 3G).
This question has been asked before, here, which is worth a read.
For some reason, there appears to be a paucity of custom ROMs for the 3G variant of the Nexus 7, but there are some here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2022
Having a WiFi only 'grouper' device myself, I can't make any comments on the merits (or otherwise) of these custom ROMs, so I guess you'll just have to try a few out for yourself.
Good luck.

Hi, neo45215...
I think you're good go to directly... the only thing that flashing a Custom ROM won't update is the Bootloader. This currently stands at v4.23... if memory serves me correctly the Bootloader with Jellybean 4.2.1 was either v4.13 or v4.18. I strongly suspect it was v4.18.
Anyway, whatever the Bootloader version number is, I'm not sure it matters that much when it comes to flashing Custom ROMs.
I'm surprised though, you haven't received an OTA update bringing your Nexus 7 up to date with Jellybean 4.3 (which will also update the Bootloader to v4.23).
Anyway, good luck with PA... (was never much of a fan - too 'overcooked' and gimmicky for my bare-bones minimalist tastes)... but, as they say... each to their own.

Ahh... you have a 'tilapia' Nexus 7... and it won't allow OTA downloads over a 3G network. Did not know that. I have a 'grouper' Nexus 7 myself, so everything I do HAS to be done over WiFi.
I'm not sure if one can extrapolate from a completely different device to another... but on my Samsung Galaxy S3, there is an option in...
SETTINGS>>ABOUT DEVICE>>SOFTWARE UPDATE>>WIFI ONLY
The WIFI ONLY checkbox is 'ticked' by default. By clearing this checkbox, I can now receive OTA updates on my Samsung via the 3G cellular network....
Maybe there is a similar setting/checkbox on your 'tilapia' Nexus 7.
--------------
And as for PA.... give it a try! Lots of people like it, and it's up there with Cyanogenmod as being one of the most popular of Custom ROMs. Just saying it wasn't to my taste. And that's the thing about Custom ROMs - what appeals to one person, will most decidedly not appeal to another.

well ....flashed PA....and it was overwhelming!!.....ended up flashing stock 4.3....:silly:...and about that wifi workaround..cant seem to find that option in my device...
Also 1 more question ...everywhere i read it said that to get into bootloader/recovery i had to press both volm + and volm - with the power botton .....but funnily for my device it doesnt work.....i tried many times and today i accidentally only pressed the volm - with the power and voila!!...into the bootoader!!...is that normal...any ideas??

Nexus 7 3G 2012 doubt

Hello all,
I'm on the forum for a long time, now, in the beginning in the HTC Desire forum, then on the HTC Sensation and now here.
I just bought from a friend an used Nexus 7 3G (Tilapia) tablet, which I really like.
I realized too late that the 3G model has far less developmnent activity with regards the Wifi only model, probably due to its far less distribution.
Now, I rooted my tablet and installed CM11, but I'm not completely satisfied.
What I'd like to have is a Kernel with the possibility to overclock the tablet, but I can't find any for the Tilapia.
Moreover, the available ROMs are not too much, and all based on CM11.
So, my questions:
1. Is there a stable Kernel I can use with CM11 (Kitkat 4.4.2) with which I can overclock the tablet?
2. What would happen if I install a Kernel + ROM designed for the Grouper model on my Tilapia? Would it work (with the exception of 3G, of course)?
In other words, is the hardware the same on Grouper and Tilapia, so I can use the saem ROMs and/or Kernels?
Thank you in advance.
Ciao,
Giovanni

V1.4 is what your looking for. Unsure if it will work on the tilapia though, if you wanna try it make a backup prior. If you bootloop/hang at boot hold vol down and power that will get you back to bootloader where you can access recovery

Hello,
At the end I installed SlimKAT ROM, which is very slim (pune intended) and fast, together with the Faux Kernel.
I'm running the "Ultimate" version of the Kernel, running the processor to 1.7 Ghz (actually, 1.6Ghz): I cound't be happier!
Ciao,
Giovanni
