Is it so common to receive a faulty N4? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I'm about to buy a new phone in two weeks time and I'm pointing right at the nexus 4. I've seen a lot of reviews and read a lot of threads here in this forum. Well, I have a doubt now... Many users are lamenting problems with the screen (blue lines) and the general build quality of the phone (creaking of the volume rocker or something like that). So I'm asking you: is it so common to receive a faulty nexus 4? If I buy the phone, I will have to stick with it for about two years, so I really have to make a good choise. Thanks in advance

Think about it this way bruv logically speaking threads titled My Nexus 4 Is Working As Advertised won't be posted anywhere near as frequently as help/troubleshooting/complaint threads. It just isn't deemed newsworthy by most
But don't let that put you off, haha--the N4's the best phone I've owned so far (I've owned all the greats One X, Maguro, S3, S4 etc) and after checking it out myself I bought a couple spares for me, one for the wife and another for my brother. None of us have had any problems whatsoever after months of constant rooting/flashing/tinkering in general
In short you're not going to find a better phone in terms of price to performance--by all means go for it

Honestly you won't see any real world difference between the different CPU types.

I just received my Nexus 4 yesterday and I see no issues with it.

That would be because not all chips are created equal and yes, afaik only fast binned CPUs can get up to 1.9GHz--I've been lucky enough that all five of the N4s I bought can get up that high.
However I personally use stock freqs (384GHz min - 1512GHz max) because I don't do any gaming & have no need to go higher. Always nice to have the option though

Sure mate go for it, i think devices with build quality issues are isolated cases, as someone already mentioned you won't see threads about everything working as it should.
From my experience, and i had htc and samsung phones, so i know the difference between plastic/metal housings and different build qualities, believe me when i say the nexus 4 has a really unique premium feel to it. You won't regret getting it.

Xperia Arc S or HTC Sensation XL ?

Hey guys!
I'm planning to buy a new phone in 2 weeks ..
I'm confused between these two .. Xperia Arc S and Sensation XL ..
Any recommendations or guidance from the users of these phones
What i like about the XL :
Massive 4.7" screen
Easier to touch-type
Beats audio
What i like about the Arc S :
Sharper screen (233 ppi) despite the small size (4.3"), comparing to the XL's 4.7" and (199 ppi)
The cool looks !
The upcoming official ICS will look great on the that phone
Both processors are fast .. 1.4 and 1.5
Taking into account that I lOVE the new ICS look and i'd love to have it on my next phone .. While i can only have it on the Arc S because of CM support .. And i don't know how to get that look on the Sensation XL because of the lack of suport and the too little ROMs availablity
By what you said, get Arc S, or wait a little more for Xperia S. Both will get ICS until june. Arc S is going to get stable CM9 soon, and I'm sure there will be some guys from FreeXperiaTeam (who work with CM in 2011 Xperia devices) working ASAP on Xperia S.

You ask that question in an Xperia Arc forum? Are you dumb or something?
i had just pick up an arc a month ago..i just take it primarily because of it good looks other than that sony promise of official ice cream samndwish and a remote chance that the arc get Playstation store outside of japan..
but i don't see if both arc and sensation gonna be relevent by the 3rq quarters of this year.as i change phone every year, the arc fits the time frame..but if u wanna kept your phone lots longer, get a dual core
I'd say Arc S
Has a micro sd slot which the XL doesn't have.
If the XL had dualcore I'd go with that but it hasn't and 100Mhz are no difference.
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
+1 to arcS... HTC is too expancive... What are you paying for? Half of inch? Wright question is arcS or Sensation XE... Dual core, great display, Beats Audio... And looks great to. I would prefer SE because I am a BIG fan of it... And you can go to the store, take both of them in yor hands and decide...
Seems like the Arc S is a winner for me. The charisma and charm of this phone is irresistible. However, I'm considering the upcoming Xperia S too .. Just Hoping it won't be too expensive
this HTC comes with a internal 16G memory and 768 MB ram - these are more critical factors for performance. correct me if i am wrong?
Ok, RAM is a big plus.
But for me the 16GB non-expandable memory (?) are too less, so no-go. I have ~23GB on my phone.

I read somewhere, and it has been an "aaaaah yeah..." moment for me,
that we shouldn't compare SE phones with Samsung and HTC phones.
They are not at all about the hardware or the Android version.
They fill in the gap between the people who are hardcore users and spec enthusiasts and those who have no idea about smartphones.
They are targetting people who are OK with having a really beautiful phone, advanced camera function and good hardware, not necessarily top-of-the-top.
And even though XDA forums are normally not a place for such people, you can't deny the very existense of such target group.
Seeing it like this, you can understand why they haven't joined the hardware race that Samsung and HTC are running atm.

I was tempted by Note because of it's size and power etc. as I could eventually get one for free,
but this device is NOT impressive.
The screen - again - looks like oversaturated **** and the UI is actually disgusting.
I quit after 5 minutes of playing with it.
BTW the performance when just fiddling with it was actually mediocre.
Xperia S is worth wait, as far I have seen after AOSP Sony has one of the best UI and they aren't in the race for great hardware spec like other which just made Dual core devices without software support for it. Sony waited to release dual core when it's necessary i.e. As far as I know ICS is optimized for Dual core. So when they started rolling out ICS update they started to make dual core devices. But if you looking to brag about the spec then sure go for SGS 3 that might out
My 2 cents

Xperia Z - Over Hyped & Over Priced Device

Sorry to all Sony fanboys here but I used Xperia Z for 2days and I can say its just ok mobile with good design, nothing special. Once S4, M7 will be announced XZ is dead.
Below are the points:
1. Its very expensive
2. Not really premium built, still plastic feeling. Power Button flimsy, not as attractive as shown/hyped in videos.
Try it, you will come to know
3. Poor viewing angles, Butterfly screen is far far better than XZ
4. Audio output poor via speakers
5. Only camera quality is good
NOTE - Iam not trolling its a good phone but not the Best !!!
Sent from my Nexus 4 - True Android
Obvious troll is obvious. How expensive do you think the M7, S4 etc are going to be? In Australia the XZ RRP is *less* than the street price of the SGSIII 4G (a 6 month old re-design of a 10 month old phone). Sounds good to me.
The rest is basically down to user needs.

I somewhat agree though, the Xperia Z is launching in a month with outdated hardware. Well... not outdated but the S4 Pro and Adreno 320 has been out since last year.
The new HTC M7 and Galaxy S4 will be much more powerful and they are also launching soon.
So the Xperia Z will be overlooked again.
I'm still getting my Xperia Z though, cause I'm a Sony fanboy and also love the design.

I think the point being raised here is that specs aren't everything. The Z won't be the most powerful phone this half, but it's still incredibly powerful all the same. I used to think my desire was good and it only pulled 4K in antutu compared to 20K for this phone!
What *does* sell the phone for me is that Sony are the only manufacturer to openly cooperate with and encourage the developer community. None of us would be here on XDA if we didn't care about modding/custom roms etc and life is going to be much better for the sony than it will be for upcoming Samsungs & HTC's. Samsung release broken kernel source and no source at all for exynos - what good is an 8 core CPU if you can't even get hardware UI accel working on anything other than a touchwiz rom. HTC are just dead slow, another GPL violation with kernel source for the latest HOX update, that and it still took some light modification for it to actually work. Don't forget they don't fully unlock bootloaders any more either and kernels have to be flashed via fastboot every time.
On the other hand, Sony have published source for the Z weeks before it is even available! Not only that, but they've chosen the chipset with the best open source support and also a massive dev community to pull from via the N4. I'm fully aware this won't be the biggest selling phone this year, I'm also fully aware that it won't be the most powerful.... but I just don't care, but it'll do what *I* want much better than the upcoming HTC/Samsung releases.
M
this topic reminds me of me with my S3
Another fanboy of some company trolling the threads. He doesnt even give detailed explaination and picks up some random points and says its over-hyped. And what was the need to make a thread on this? You could have written the same thing in the main thread comments section. Obvious Troll!
M7 has the same APQ8064 just clocked higher. So its only going to be on par with the Z as Butterfly is behind Z in terms of performance. Extra 200mhz clock in the M7 might help it perform on par with the Z.
SGS4 will of course be more powerful than M7, Z and all other phones.
And the purpose of this thread is what exactly ? Xperia Z is not the 'bestest' and ultimate phone ever ? You don't say...
Mods, please close this flame bait...

Am currently watching the HTC One announcement of their new phone. Have to say, looks pretty awesome, seriously considering cancelling my xz order and waiting for the HTC. Sony z Pros
Better looking (i think)
Water/dust proof (not really something I need)
SD-card
Better dev support
less customized version of android, so possible faster roll out of new versions
HTC One pros
Newer SOC / faster/ less power
Better Screen
More internal memory
probably better speakers (not that i care)
infrared (not that i care)
As for the camera we don't know which will be better, and I don't really care as in the end all camera phones are rubbish
I'm not sure what to do, but looking at the hardware spec list the HTC is the one to get
looking at the software and design I favor the Z
Darn why could HTC just make a ****y phone
edit:
The presentation veld a bit like a teenage phone, that is holding me back as well

Like I said, to me it looks better, no sense in arguing about taste
HTC is famous for being late with the release of kernel source and when they do it is often in a non compilable state, Sony is quicker and better in this respect .
Saying things like "please" isn't an argument.

I guess it is where you after for most post xperia X10 devices you can get nightlies from CM. and the free xperia guys are doing excellent work to make that happen. You are able to get Android 4.2 on your arc (early 2011) possibly older devices as well, but I don't know as I don't have one. If you count the number of cooked roms it might be less than the one x but that doesn't say anything

Unfortunately, and by all accounts the M7 leaves the Z far behind. A superior screen, Camera, Sound Quality and Loudness, not to mention build quality.
I don't see why anyone would purchase a Sony handset unless they are a fanboy, in which case it would be pointless arguing with an irrational person.

Too much hate on the Samsungs. In my opinion get the Galaxy Note II or wait for the Note III. If not get the Galaxy SIV. The features included in it are amazing and also if they are all going AOSP then what does it matter. New TouchWiz is great. Also are you looking at the Samsung Galaxy SIV GTI9505 or GTI9500
It will be very biased here.
I say Samsung Galaxy SIV is first choice, then HTC One tied with Xperia Z. Both were great phones.
I havent tried the LG but they never update their phones. But its you call at the end

If I had money to throw away I will go for the HTC one. I am assuming you have really high income to be considering moving from a nexus 4 to get any of those.
Just watch this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3uFFNNBhMc&feature=youtube_gdata_player
(HTC one is ~= SGS4 in performance)
Nexus 4 is a TOP phone performance wise...
So the question is: is it worth spending ~600$ for build quality, better screen, better speakers and better camera?
It's not for me.

Too much hate on the Samsungs. In my opinion get the Galaxy Note II or wait for the Note III. If not get the Galaxy SIV. What features? You mean gimmicks.. Most people who buy the S4 just want to showoff and don't really use their phones features.and how can you say touch wiz is great its froyo-ish and lags all the time with the S4 and eats up to much space on the S4 storage

Obviously I'm a noob. I just need a few people to help me find the perfect phone. Between these 4:
Lg Optimus G pro
Sony Xperia Z
Samsung Galaxy S4
HTC One
I have T-Mobile or else I would have a rather larger amount of options.
I'm more of a media type person, but I use my phone to browse the web, shop online, listen to music, and Use Google Now to get directions and such
The reason why I put my question in the Nexus 4 thread is because I HAVE A NEXUS 4. I would like to know if I should just keep it or buy one of those phones above! Please help!

Here's my super biased opinion.
HTC One (because i've tried one yesterday, pretty good quality and it flies!)
Sony Xperia Z (because I used to love sony. Tried the phone, not much of a difference compared to the N4)
LG Optimus G Pro (because well.. We're using LG now aren't we? Not sure how their non-aosp devices would stand tho.)
Samsung Galaxy S4 (because it lags like a grand mother and i hate samsung for adding galaxy to the galaxy nexus and for their ****ty build quality.)

Where is the BEST of all - NEXUS 4. Its not in your Top phones list.
Looking at the 4 phones they all are same BUT Nexus 4 stands out and unique with its own pros and cons.
cause i have it

Because I already have it. I've even rooted it with cm10 , xenonhd(currently) and paranoidandroid 3.15. Its kind of boring. Maybe because last year I used to switch from different tablets and such. Literally have had 9. Im just trying to find a phone that won't get boring. Its really difficult

If nexus 4 is a boring smartphone, I'm Santa Claus.
If you try to learn something here on xda instead of change devices it's better. No one want to be a noob for ever.

Choose a phone based upon what you will use it for. Games, internet, movies, texting and calls? A smaller device might be suitable for you if you only plan on using it for texting/calls or a device like the s4 for movies/gaming.
The nexus 4 is a great device, decent screen size, amazing performance... even on stock.
your list doesn't even have nexus listed in it. I wonder why you posted this question here!
I'd say stick with the Nexus but if you're adamant about switching then
1. HTC One - unrivalled build quality, great performance, Sense is actually quite nice here, overall a great phone
2. GS4 - awful build quality and fugly TouchWiz but lots of development on XDA and outstanding hardware specs
3. Xperia Z - decent specs and great build quality/feel in hand (not to mention waterproof) but poor viewing angles on the display and if you're going to dish out money on a new phone you may as well get one with next-generation hardware rather than the XZ which is between the two generations
4. LGOG Pro - screen is too large IMO, cheap feel to the device and, being an LG, there's little chance of you getting updates and there's not too much development
We already have a phone comparing other phones.

Stay with Nexus or HTC 1.

Which smartphone to buy? Nexus 4, Xperia Z/ZL, Galaxy S4?

Guyz i have a budget of 30K and options i made out are Nexus 4, Xperia Z/ZL or Samsung galaxy S4.
Can you give suggestions??
My requirement is : Music like Xperia phones, Camera sensor like Xperia phones, Display like AMOLED or S-LCD.
My last device was Xperia SP and it totally sucked. Pathetic display. Pathetic camera. Sold out after 10 days use!!!
You have a budget for a phone for 30.000 dollars?
Well anyway, since you want music like xperia and camera like xperia I think we have a winner.
If you don't want to go with the xperia you can always flash xperia albums + walkman on your s4 or nexus I think.

No 30k means 30000 Indian Rs .... which is about 500 US$

I would seriously wait for the Moto X. It's perfect as per my requirement but sadly india is one of the last countries to get nexus products. Nexus 4 came after one year of release and i think so will Moto X.
Xperia Z has pathetic display other wise its good too yeah.

Is there any possibility of Motorola launching the phone elsewhere apart from the Americas? All blogs I read today specifically state that the phone will not be sold anywhere else.

There was something about there being a cheaper version for international prepaid markets, though I doubt that that particular version will retain the customization options. Not to mention it will most definitely have weaker specs, which aren't really top of the line now too.

Weaker specs?? Are you serious?? How much weaker? like single core?? 1GB RAM?? less than 720p display???
What is the source of your info? These are standards dude. And Google Nexus devices have never been any less. Though i agree with you on customizations. There may be two or three basic color white or blacks anything.
And yeah i too have not heard of anywhere except America. But i guess Google is one brand that has evolved out of experimentation. It won't be same as it was with Nexus 4. Let's keep expectations down anyways *sighs*

Why would you get a moto x? It's a lot weaker than the Nexus 4 and comes with a older version of android and the bootloader is locked. If it's locked down anything like Verizon then good luck with custom rom and kernel development.
