Imagine an Xperia Z 2 or whatever other name someone comes up with. This device has no slots at all, not even SIM card or SD card (has 64gb internal memory), no 3.5 mm jack, no microUSB slot. It has proprietary pogo pins (like the metal pads on the XZ except a few more of them) for USB connectivity, QI charging, latest WiFi, latest Bluetooth, maybe IR and FM but who cares really when its main feature is water proofing down to 20m depth for continuous submersion. Perhaps this hypothetical device is slightly larger and thicker (not much) than the XZ, and it comes with a special stylus allowing usage underwater and while wet (not attached, it wont fit on this scale, you'd have to carry it around yourself when it is needed/wanted).
To sum up, the device would feature the following:
NO audio jack
NO SIM card (solved some other way)
NO microUSB
NO microSD
[*]NO slots at all
64gb internal storage
Special pogo pins allowing USB-like connection to computer
Wireless charging (Qi or whatever other solution, obviously possible via the pogo pins as well)
Latest WiFi tech
Latest Bluetooth, with apt-X
A-GPS, GPS, GLONASS, whatever the other devices have at the time
Killer feature: Continuous submersion to some ridiculous number, like say 20+ metres
Roughly same size as XZ, maybe slightly larger
Same, maybe slightly worse (or slightly better but in that case definitely a few mm thicker) battery life
[*]*Magic stylus allowing usage underwater and while wet
(*) Maybe, I haven't decided yet if this one is completely unrealistic because I don't know enough about capacitive screens
The, non-Bluetooth, speakers probably sound like crap but are extremely durable. Ideally, while not playing in a pool or diving off waterfalls, you would probably be using Bluetooth headphones connected at most times.
The question is, if the above mentioned device existed, and assuming you could use it on your network through some magical built-in SIM or through MEID registration or whatever, would you be interested in buying one? Assume the price to be around the same as Xperia Z at launch, perhaps a little more.
You have big imagination

Awesome idea!!
since most of the stuffs now can be wireless.. it's a brilliant idea.. I would definitely buy 1..
it should include a Qi or better wireless charger... and we can also do miracast nowadays.. so why do we still need ports/slots??

I agree, but only if you got a pair of Bluetooth headphones, etc. But you'd always need a SUB port anyway wouldn't you, for large updates, and of course rooting, BL unlocking etc x)
Ps: It's not like the touch screen doesn't work under water. It starts clicking everywhere. So the stylus wouldn't help

The pogo pin for usb connector would be enough.. right?
Sent from my GT-P6800 using Tapatalk HD
PogoPin only does charging! no data Connection
you surely can acces ADB and Flash wireless, but its not secure, if you brick your phone it's done!
Btw, Touchscreen will be the biggest problem. Capacitive Touchscreen uses the energy in your hands to control the screen, because the poluted water is electrical conductive you can't use them under water.
If you would old school restrictive touch screens that would work... but it feels horrible ^^

I haven't seen any pogo USBs. I guess everything is transferable with WiFi/nfc/bt now anyway, so it wouldn't be a must, but Sony, would probably need the USB to install their software etc x)
For me I'd love a fully waterproof Smartphone, but I think the average person dont even know how to connect NFC or Bluetooth, hell my girlfriend needed help connecting to Wi-Fi. So they would simply not bother with this phone. That's why iPhones are still popular. Android is "complicated"... tututu
Read up on USB. For USB 2.0 compatibility, 4 channels are required, 2 for power, one RX and one TX. An additional ID channel is used in the USB 2.0 micro spec.
Besides, the HTC One X has USB pogo pins.
Verizon band support would be nice. Just take my money already, Sony...

Hey guys, I got a product for review that I thought was really cool.. not only is it a 3.5mm adapter but it turns any headset into a handsfree kit as well. and it's cheap, from my time with it I've found it seems to be good quality and should last quite a while..
While the title is 'HTC', it's not an HTC branded product.. just can be used for them..

Snippet:
"The HTC Stereo Handsfree with Volume Control is from our friends at USBFever and it's really three things in one, a mini-USB to 3.5mm jack adapter, volume control and a microphone. This little gadget essentially lets you turn any headphones or earbuds you have into a handsfree setup. There are many choices out there for handsfree sets but really most have sub-par headphones included with them, and it's usually only one earpiece, with this gadget from USBFever you get to use your own headset. Being able to use any headset is very nice indeed, also you can get this for about $15.00 shipped to you from USBFever, so not only is it very useful but very inexpensive and well worth it..."

Sorry if someone thinks this is spam or whatever, but I get quite a few things for review for my AT&T Tilt and there are a few that really stand out as being useful and this is one of them that I thought I could share
That looks pretty interesting. I was looking into buying the Seidio version, which has one of those spring-wound cords, making cable management easier. That being said, I like the button layout and clip mechanism on this one more... I think these are much better than the regular USB to miniplug adapters though, as it means you can essentially make your own earphones/buds a 'headset' thanks to the built in mic. In-line volume control is also a godsend...

No, that's ok.. just curious.. but it's just like the TytnII all kinds of stuff comes with it, but nothing comes with the Tilt, even though it's basically the same phone
don't know why ATT decided no to include the same things, it's the same price

I thought the Tilt came out to be cheaper, unless service charges add up to the same price eventually...
The only thing I don't like about both the Seidio and this one is that because the USB connector end is L shaped the stylus becomes harder to remove and insert while this is in use. The straight ones, on the other hand, have a tendency to dislodge and/or break eventually. I think I'm going to go with the Seidio one though, even though it costs around 3 times the price, mainly because of the spring loaded cable control mechanism.

The stylus clears the jack fine for me, the end is flexible and just bends out of the way.. as for retractable, I personally don't like those retractable cables that much especially for something like this.
I've got the retractable Boxwave mini-sync cables and those are fine for that use but I don't care for them when used like this, it's too easy for you to pull on it accidentally and it to spring back in

That makes absolute sense... now you've got me reconsidering what to purchase... any chance of finding one of these on Amazon? I need international shipping to be specific, as I live in Turkey.
While obviously due to the direct connection the volume on these is bound to be better than a bluetooth headset (which is what I currently use and also why I want a wired headset), does the in-line volume control degrade the volume or quality even at its highest setting? I ask because I used to own a headset that I used on my PC with an in-line volume dial and even at maximum volume, I could tell the difference between one with in-line volume control and a headset without one...
USBFever sent it to me for review, and they run all items with $2.99 shipping worldwide, so I assume that means $2.99 to Turkey as well
so it's $12.99 + $2.99 Shipping = $15.98
http://www.usbfever.com
direct link: http://www.usbfever.com/index_eproduct_view.php?products_id=301
as for volume, I personally don't crank it to the max but I hadn't noticed any distortion, I used it for about 6 hours yesterday actually while working outside my house and did have it up loud to help drown up noise, but not to the max setting... as for the two separate volumes you need to adjust each one independently of the other, like I would set the inline to max and then adjust my phone itself to comfortable max volume, and then I can lower and raise the volume in line without problems

Thanks.. I try my best.
It turns out that even with ExtUSB gone, which someone else pointed out prevented video out in the old fashion, HTC has figured out how to incorporate video out.
http://androidandme.com/2010/04/news/droid-incredible-does-tv-out-video/
This article says the Incredible, unlike the Evo 4g, does not use HDMI to do video out. It just uses the regular micro USB port, with composite ends on the other side.
Like the other person said before, thats not exactly 1080i, but it's gonna look fine in my car.
By the way.... THATS what I'ld like to see someone develop. Take the Incredible ROM, go through it, find whatever makes the video out work, and port it over to the N1 roms! Is that even possible?
And please, don't ten people say well don't demand of the devs, learn it yourself... if its impossible, or will take a long time, or whatever, I will wait patiently.
I'd be very surprised seeing as how the usb output on the nexus is very low (2MB/s), unless this is strictly a software stop.

Pretty sure that's impossible. The port is different, so the cable that connects the Incredible to a TV wouldn't fit in an N1.
What kind of TV setup do you have in your car by the way? In the dashboard, or a TV in the backseat?
I think the ports are the same , just software or the cable enable the output ....I hope

This one actually has some reviews.
I don't think it will fit.
From wiki:
HTC manufactures Windows Mobile and Android-based Communicators which have a proprietary connector called HTC ExtUSB (Extended USB). ExtUSB combines mini-USB (with which it is backwards-compatible) with audio input as well as audio and video output in an 11-pin connector.

=( That sucks, we only have a micro usb - B, pretty sure they are incompatible with each other.
irrespective, i have an hdtv. most composite video looks like hammered poo on an hdtv
yeah totally different connectors, I still have mine, sucked when i first got my N1 to see what connection it uses.
this seems pretty interesting, unless the icredibles usb port has more connections then i think it could be possible. as far as i can see the only hardware limitation would be the port, i dont think the phone needs special hardware to output analog video does it?
The connectors from the board to the port are different than a standard charge/data connection.

only issue i have with believing that, is that the hd2 has a different usb port than ALL the other phones it mentions in 'compatibility', yet it doesnt anywhere mention having a mini to micro usb adapter included.....
I suspect (as happens a lot) they have released it as 'compatible with htc phones' and then just found a list of all htc phones to put on the website.
Be great if it did work, mind!
i also agree that this is a simple case of the seller not completely aware of what he is selling!
why? even the ancient HTC Touch is listed as compatible! now surely that can't be true!
its very likely misleading specs, but you're welcome to try and report here if you still feel like it!
Ugh, I hate how retailers are becoming less and less responsible for posting the right information on the products they sell. I would also hope that it can stream from the HD2 (as what I've read how the Droid is able to stream tv out now), but who knows. So many devs here are saying it's a hardware specific problem. I'm wondering about buying one and just returning it if it doesn't work.
I agree, Yes the cable will fit all these phones and therefore it is "compatable"
But the seller seems to fail to mention that your phone might not support video out.
In fact its complete crap, cos he goes on to list things like XDA 2, which didn't have a mini USB connecter, although it did do video out but only with the optional backpack!

Oh no, please, be my guest and try it, and report back
I believe this has been addressed on the forums a few times.
Although the snapdragon processor does support tv out, HTC did not implement this in the HD2. What this means in layman's terms is that there are no video channels going from the processor to the USB connector and therefore you will not get any tv out no matter what cable you plug in there, unless its a magic one.
The listing clearly says it is for the touch pro and touch pro 2 devices which do support TV out through the usb connector.

Not quite true.
While a metal shield decreases the coupling between the primary and secondary coils, there are now wireless charging methods that work even with a metal-covered device.

These are not available yet, QI is the mainstream now, and at present QI cannot work with metal in between, may be in the coming years when QUALCOMM gets this right, we'll see them available.

There was a rumour (can't find it now) that the 6P would support Rezence, which I believe could work even with a metal-backed phone.
I don't know if that rumour has been confirmed, though.
Aww man. I've just bought a new qi charger too. I'm guessing one of the adapters should work fine though.
I just want the damn thing to work with my Air Dock. This is by far the best mounting solution for a car if you have Qi
Rather than wait for QUALCOMM with wireless charging through metal, I would rather like to see QUALCOMM or A4WP to release their Rezence standard product into the market, they have products available for the past 1-3 years, but none has made them onto the consumer market, I was offered a test sample a few year back, but I rejected it due to the contract associated with the test, I was told that because of certain reasons, that's why it was never allowed to be released on to the consumers market as of today.
Hopefully they can get their stuff out soon.
No Wireless charging..

I'm losing interest in the new 6p by the day.
Hopefully there will be some wireless adapters available soon for USB type-c.
Not gonna happen - http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...6p-and-5x-wont-have-wireless-charging-either/ which is fine by me I never use it on my current N6
Wireless charging gets my Nexus 6 waaay too hot. Waking up to a smoking phone was the last straw. Goodbye & good riddance to inefficient charging.
It heats up a bit, but not too much. I love the convenience of just putting it down every night.
Cant believe both handsets are not getting wireless charging. I think its great, esp being able to charge your phone in a coffee shop without needing a plug and charger cable!
I use my TYLT charger to read all day in the office while I'm working. I don't understand why the lack of such a great feature. With the USB C addition it might take a while for wireless charging receivers to be available. So glad my current Nexus 6 is awesome enough to be worth keeping. Maybe the MotoX Pure might deserve a second look...

The reasoning is the device charges faster with USB-C cables is lame.
Go home set my Nexus 6 on my Qi Pad and it charges, do not really care if it charges fast.

My Nexus 6 NEVER gets hot while wirelessly charging. Its a great convenience and a big mistake not having this feature on the 6P. This is one of the reasons I cancelled my order for the 6P.
CC
I agree and I'm keeping my order for me. I've been on M previews since day one daily driving. Once the OTA hits I'll still have a month to test and use this one and if need be I can cancel before they actually ship. If the last releases are any indicator we can probably keep it and sell for a profit. Win win

There will be some wireless adapter soon, but it won't look good, if you want something good, and works similar, consider magnetic charging adapter/cable, they are not wireless.
