Video Out on N1 is Possible ? - Nexus One General

It turns out that even with ExtUSB gone, which someone else pointed out prevented video out in the old fashion, HTC has figured out how to incorporate video out.
http://androidandme.com/2010/04/news/droid-incredible-does-tv-out-video/
This article says the Incredible, unlike the Evo 4g, does not use HDMI to do video out. It just uses the regular micro USB port, with composite ends on the other side.
Like the other person said before, thats not exactly 1080i, but it's gonna look fine in my car.
By the way.... THATS what I'ld like to see someone develop. Take the Incredible ROM, go through it, find whatever makes the video out work, and port it over to the N1 roms! Is that even possible?
And please, don't ten people say well don't demand of the devs, learn it yourself... if its impossible, or will take a long time, or whatever, I will wait patiently.

I'd be very surprised seeing as how the usb output on the nexus is very low (2MB/s), unless this is strictly a software stop.

Pretty sure that's impossible. The port is different, so the cable that connects the Incredible to a TV wouldn't fit in an N1.
What kind of TV setup do you have in your car by the way? In the dashboard, or a TV in the backseat?

I think the ports are the same , just software or the cable enable the output ....I hope

but, composite out? bleh. composite can only carry 480i, not even 480p, i don't think. i know it can't handle anything higher than 480 lines of resolution

Good find.
I did a search for HTC ACT100 and found this one as well:
http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Cable-ACT100-Verizon-MyTouch/product-reviews/B0022JHOYM
This one actually has some reviews.
I don't think it will fit.

From wiki:
HTC manufactures Windows Mobile and Android-based Communicators which have a proprietary connector called HTC ExtUSB (Extended USB). ExtUSB combines mini-USB (with which it is backwards-compatible) with audio input as well as audio and video output in an 11-pin connector.

=( That sucks, we only have a micro usb - B, pretty sure they are incompatible with each other.

irrespective, i have an hdtv. most composite video looks like hammered poo on an hdtv

yeah totally different connectors, I still have mine, sucked when i first got my N1 to see what connection it uses.

this seems pretty interesting, unless the icredibles usb port has more connections then i think it could be possible. as far as i can see the only hardware limitation would be the port, i dont think the phone needs special hardware to output analog video does it?

The connectors from the board to the port are different than a standard charge/data connection.

only issue i have with believing that, is that the hd2 has a different usb port than ALL the other phones it mentions in 'compatibility', yet it doesnt anywhere mention having a mini to micro usb adapter included.....
I suspect (as happens a lot) they have released it as 'compatible with htc phones' and then just found a list of all htc phones to put on the website.
Be great if it did work, mind!
i also agree that this is a simple case of the seller not completely aware of what he is selling!
why? even the ancient HTC Touch is listed as compatible! now surely that can't be true!
its very likely misleading specs, but you're welcome to try and report here if you still feel like it!
Ugh, I hate how retailers are becoming less and less responsible for posting the right information on the products they sell. I would also hope that it can stream from the HD2 (as what I've read how the Droid is able to stream tv out now), but who knows. So many devs here are saying it's a hardware specific problem. I'm wondering about buying one and just returning it if it doesn't work.
I agree, Yes the cable will fit all these phones and therefore it is "compatable"
But the seller seems to fail to mention that your phone might not support video out.
In fact its complete crap, cos he goes on to list things like XDA 2, which didn't have a mini USB connecter, although it did do video out but only with the optional backpack!

Oh no, please, be my guest and try it, and report back
I believe this has been addressed on the forums a few times.
Although the snapdragon processor does support tv out, HTC did not implement this in the HD2. What this means in layman's terms is that there are no video channels going from the processor to the USB connector and therefore you will not get any tv out no matter what cable you plug in there, unless its a magic one.
The listing clearly says it is for the touch pro and touch pro 2 devices which do support TV out through the usb connector.

HDMI out cable doesn't seem to work

I bought a microusb to HDMI cable (Samsung P/N ECC1HU0BBE but not from Samsung, from some other random place) to see if it would work. It does not appear to work on my phone. I'm running the stock ROM, just rooted with the bloat removed.
I plugged it into an HDTV here at work, checked "TV out" in settings, and nothing. TV said it didn't see any input. I was dubious about this, especially since there's an option in there for NTSC/PAL which AFAIK doesn't apply to HDMI. This leads me to believe that maybe the TV out option is for something more like the classic ipod style analog video out through the headphone jack cable.
I tried: just checking the "TV out" box, switching between PAL and NTSC, restarting the phone with the cable connected, etc.
So, there's my anecdotal report. I'm guessing that our phone doesn't support this cable. I thought I had one of the latter (analog video) type in a box of cords somewhere but haven't been able to find it yet. Has anyone tried one of those cables?
(I'd post links to the cable I'm talking about but it won't let me! D
drat.

The cable I have looks exactly like that, down to the little plug symbol by the microusb port on the side. Also you'll notice that the part number you list is the same as the one I did but with an "STD" on the end. The page you linked me is where I started my search for this cable. The cable itself doesn't have any part numbers on it that I've found.
If it doesn't work on my TV at home either I'll take it apart and we'll see what's in there. I can't imagine much.
So, who knows? Maybe I have a knockoff, broken or wrong cable. If so, bummer for me, but that means that we still have the possibility of HDMI out on this device. So, someone buy that cable straight from Samsung (whenever they decide to start selling it) and prove me wrong! I'd be very happy
I bought the same cable and tryed everything...
I am not sure if it is a software issue or what. But it definitely is not sending signal threw this port. Tried a many different programs/apps and settings.
I thought "TV Out" was only for the analog video signal through the 3.5 mm jack.
where did you guys buy the cable?
just want to know
Thank You
It could be the cable. I had to buy a specific cable for my Greddy Emanage since they did something to switch the USB cable to make it proprietary. They charged $30 for the stupid thing too! Bunch of BS, anyhow, they may have done the same thing with the Vibrant.
I dont remember hearing anything about the Vibrant doing HDMI out though
i used an old 3.5 to rca cables from a motozine i had and video worked just fine on my tv. it kind of looks like crap on my 52 inch screen. but it worked. so im thinking maybe the video out only works through the 3.5 jack.
The Galaxy S doesnt support HDMI output. That was a accident statement from Samsung. That cable is for the "mondi".

Hmm. I wonder if it works on the Sprint Epic 4G, or on the international I9000. (There are several Galaxy S features that T-Mobile and AT&T have disabled, but which appear in other variants.)
What is the quality of the 3.5mm tv out..is it horrible? On youtube videos it looks really good, but its hard to tell by youtube. Will it look quite good on a 46" panasonic plasma?...no hdmi news is quite depressing, was really looking forward to that.

Gold - All Ground connects on same cable.
And your done.. takes all of 20 secs
Note: Make sure to burn off coating on headphone cables, just take a match to each seperate cable.

DRM, and yes, it does suck. But you can work around it by encoding your own and deleting the one that came with the phone. There's even an app in the apps forum to provide the launcher.

lol, "extensive" testing? Seriously? These cables are composite, the quality will NOT be any better from one to the other. If you have signal issues, then the cable may be defective.
BTW, the audio coming out of the phone is near useless with the 3.5 out. I have to increase my audio on the TV to near max in order to hear comfortably.

There's a few reasons for this. Samsung is a Korean company, of course they'd give their own people things first. That dock is specific for the Korean phone, and in Korea there is a domestic satellite TV service, called T-DMB, their cellphones and other devices receive giving more incentive for a device like this.

Unless you are already bringing viewing resolution considerably lower, of course it matters.
What in the world do you mean by a statement like that that? NTSC video is 720 x 480 at 60i. 720p is 1280 x 720 at 30p or 24p or 60p.
You can do very well with component or even S video (if you can still find it, they have all but killed it off) out for 720p content, but if you are talking about composite ("yellow cable"), I firmly disagree.
The instances where HDMI can be substituted are fairly few, and exceptionally so in consumer video. It is digital, bundles audio on one cable, and is high bandwidth. The only thorn is HDCP.
Saying you don't need HDMI for HD content is almost like saying you don't need cinema when there is VHS.
But then perhaps I am missing your point. I have yet to try it, but perhaps thee most practical way to play video from these phones is to mount them as disks and play the file themselves through a player without involving video transfer at all. Is that what you meant?
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.
I've used the 3 RCA (2 audio, one video) into one 3.5mm jack cable on my omnia 2, and camera. 720P isn't THAT high resolution, and it can be displayed fairly decently through this cable. not only this, but most modern tvs can mount the phone as a USB drive and just play the video directly.

the tv dock is one of those "will be available with froyo" things.
being a cable guy i cant let the incorrect statements about video go un answered. you CANNOT get hidef out of a base band (rca, yellow) cable. period end of story. the limitation is the tv input. ALL base band inputs are 480i. s-video is 480p. component will dispay at 1080i and hdmi at 1080p. component and hdmi are the only inputs that will accept hidef signals. some cable companies and broadcast stations offer hidef which uses the f-connector. the reason for this aception is the tuner. rca, component, hdim and svideo are display inputs. the fconnector goes to a tuner.

That is truely awesome I Wonder if there are docking stations out that let you connect both å hdmi screen AND a mouse and keyboard?
I love this idea and it is clever of canonical to ride on the back of the success of Android.
But I'm not sure how I would use it. When I use my computer (which has oneric) I also want to able to use my phone separately.
Perhaps a better solution for me would be to have a standard Ubuntu install that gains phone powers when the phone is docked. It would make apps like airdroid obsolete.
I totally see how other people will have a use for this and I hope it's a huge success.

If you have the dock w/ hdmi out, just use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse or a keyboard w/ built in trackpad. Then pair up bluetooth headphones in case you get a call so you don't lose your desktop. That'd be the easiest imo.

Anyone with technical knowledge can do a test?
I searched and found this information from another phone:
Primary frame buffer:
/dev/graphics/fb0
Secundary:
/dev/graphics/fb1
Tnks all.
i was thrilled to see this, but would sure love to also occasionally run it while not docked (you know... like a laptop or tablet...). i realize they probably did this due to battery life concerns or something, but hey, why rule it out?
Is our note compatible with this? I do not see a HDMI out!

I suspect there probably is a secondary frame buffer given that when watching videos through MHL, the playback controls display on the phone screen but not the TV...
Is there a release schedule?
As much as I love linux, the idea of having to deal with unity again, now trying to spoil my awesome note, makes me shudder ..
great hope to see something huge in coming time

For mhl to work do you have 2 use the second USB port with AC adapter? Is that how it properly coverts USB to HDMI?
