Nexus 4 help with setting up T-Mobile $30 prepaid plan !! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello xda!
Okay, so I seem to have some very very bad issue with my brand new Nexus 4. It is currently on the latest JDQ39 radio, unlocked and rooted. So here''s where the actual issue lies.
So to make it a long story short, I bought the $30 prepaid plan on the walmart website. You know, called up T-Mobile activated it, plugged in my SIM card and all, I dial #BAL# and everything's how it should be! BUT.. I decide to send a text to inform a friend of my new number (coming from US Cellular) and it takes a good long while for it to actually send.. about 2 minutes.. I think to myself," Something's wrong.." so I decide to call a random person to make sure I've got my service. It says dialing, then "Call ended" every single time! Can anyone tell me if it's an APN Issue? Or what do I do! I am panicking! I need to have service..!!! My signal strength is -91dBm and 8 asu
It's set to WCDMA preferred, and I'm honestly lost and helpless.. HELP PLEASE!

I've also restored my stock nandroid!

Bump..

They put up a ticket, refreshed me on their tower, reconnected and disconnected, still not working. The only workaround was to use 2G only instead of actually taking advantage of the HSPA+ data. It bothers me but at least it works..

Try calling 1-877-789-3106. This is the T-Mobile porting department. I had a delay of 3 days trying to port my number from Verizon to T-Mobile. I called this number, and they were able resolve the issue right away.
Although the rep said it could take 24 hrs, I got a text msg that my number had been activated on T-Mobile as I was ending the call.
BTW, I am very happy that I switched! $30/month for 5GB of 4G data!

ditch verizon for nexus with straight talk?

Im thinking about ditching Verizon and paying the $350 bucks! but i can probably make that back from selling my S3. But what are your guys thoughts about getting a nexus 4 with straight talk? has anyone used Straight Talk and is it really worth it or is it one of those deals that are either "too good to be true" or "you get what you pay for"? cause just buy switching even if i dont sell my s3 ill still be saving $500 a year. Also whats the speed difference between hspa+ and 4g lte?

I don't have experience with Straight Talk, but that's what I plan on doing with my N4 except I'm gonna try T Mobile prepaid instead. If I don't like it, I'll switch to Straight Talk AT&T. I have $200 to pay for my EFT from AT&T.

I switched from Sprint [SERO Premium] to Straight Talk on my Galaxy Nuxus, & its been good so far (about three months so far). I'm in NYC, and i get about 5Mb down, sometimes slower and sometimes faster. Overall, the service is better than Sprint.
feel free to ask any specific questions.

Did you port over your number? If so was it pretty easy. I don't know anything about gsm phones I've been on Verizon for about 7years. do you just but the phone pop in the straight talk sim and activate like you would on Verizon?

Got 2 more questions if you forget to add more time to your account will you automatically loss your phone number and have to get a new one? Also if you decide to switch back to a carrier can you port your number back? I've been told that you can't port a number if you have a pre pay phone back to a carrier like Verizon or att.

What about Solavei? Anyone with any experience with them? I heard they use TMO's network.

The Galaxy Nexus was my first GSM phone, & I was with Sprint for over 10 years (my first cellphone was a Motorola Timeport).
I ported my number to Straight Talk, & it was simple*. My number was ported in about 24 hours, but it took about 48 hours to be 100% complete. During the process, I received a text message from at&t (I ordered an at&t compatible SIM card). I could make calls, but not receive any, & my friends couldn't receive the texts I sent. But after the second day, everything was ok. The phone showed 'no signal', for the first few hours (I started to think that my phone or SIM was defective).
Porting your number to Straight Talk effectively activates your SIM card with your old number. Just make sure you set your APN :Settings > Wireless & Networks > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names (I left the "Proxy" empty)
*I was scared that I might lose my Sprint number to Straight Talk, so I ported it to Google Voice. Then I ported a custom number from another Google Voice account to Straight Talk.

1. I'm not sure, you'll have to ask customer service. But I read somewhere that they'll give you a day or two to add time to your account. They'll send you text reminders two weeks before your service ends).
2. This seems odd, you should just ask Verizon if they can port a number out from a pre-paid carrier (or just port to google voice).
I had one problem with Straight Talk: I couldn't see my service end date on their website, or add time. I called customer service and they deactivated & reactivated my account, fixing the issue. The call was pretty painless.
Hey OP. Take a look at this thread from the Galaxy Nexus forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
It has all the info you would want to know about GSM Pre-Paid options.

Nexus 4 drops all service when entering HSPA+ area

Hey guys lurker here finally registering to get some help.
I have a nexus 4 with T-Mobile. I bought it unlocked through Google and have it on the same plan I had my G2 on.
My problem is every time I get into a HSPA area my service just drops. Like completely drops. I cannot even make a call. It will come on then off then on then off. It makes the phone useless. When I'm on edge it's perfectly fine.
I went to T Mobile and got a brand new sim car and that did not help my problem.
Much appreciated any help I can get.
Factory reset first and see what happens.

That happens when the radio on the N4 switches between 3G and HSPA doing a factory reset won't affect the radio. In other words its the carrier coverage in your area. Try Straight Talk with At&t

I've got a Nexus 4 on AT&T and i've got HSPA (no +, i've checked in settings). It seems when my phone switches between towers i lose service until i go in and select AT&T from a list of available networks. On other phones in this area i always have Tmobile and AT&T, but with this one i'm getting two AT&T's. I usually select AT&T, but the last few days i've tried selecting "automatically select network." It doesnt appear to have made any changes. Just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before i factory reset this bad boy.
Factory reset, reflash of the stock ROM using the nexus toolkit, unroot and custom Roms cm10 and paranoid android. Nothing has helped my issue. I have the LTE plan and the WAP APN gives me hspa+. Still getting a signal drop every time I move more than a mile or so.

Doubt anyone is even watching this, but i called google and the rep says it sounds like a hardware issue. Getting a warranty replacement.

N4 and AT&T Service

What speed are you guys getting? I'd particularly like to hear from anyone in the Phoenix area. I routinely get .5 Mbps down, sometimes up to 4 Mbps, but pretty rarely. This with full bars, a verified 4G provisioned data plan (spoofed with GS3 and even tried Optimus G), and a multitude of APN settings. When I try and bring up questions regarding HSPA+ with customer service their mind explodes, so no help from them.
Any light that could be shed would be fantastic. I'm this close to jumping ship and fleeing to T-Mobile.
I'm no where near you (SE PA region), but I'm consistently getting 8-9mbps down with AT&T and no tweaking whatsoever.
Funny, I'm about to jump from the t mobile boat to att for spotty service where I am missing calls and delay texts. T-Mobile is fast but not worth the extra frustration.
What signal you getting? E, 3g, H?
I bet your getting 3g and need them to change your plan to preferred 4g and not Let plan. Google it and you will get some advice and tips for APN suggestion

No, I'm getting H. And I've clarified with multiple reps that my phone is on a 4G plan with an IMEI provisioned for 4G. As far as the APN, I've tried a couple with not much luck in getting faster speeds.

I don't think T-Mobile saves messages long after you keep your phone off for a week you don't get any messages. When I broke my old phone I know I got a few messages, but they didn't pop up when I put my Sim in the nexus 4.

Net10

Does anyone here use the att mnvo Net10? I'm looking to switch out from tmobile and straight talk is out of the question now how is the service? How is the customer service? How was the porting time?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Data is completely useless for me, so is their customer service. The only way to speak to anyone is to send them an email and wait for them to call you in a day.I hold a signal just fine and have tried all the apns I can find but its impossible for me to even get close to my 1.5GB limit when I can't even load a web page or refresh my weather. Gophone was much better for me and that's what I'll be going back to. I've heard gophone has less coverage than post paid att contracts, but I can't notice any less coverage where I am. I should note that these are only mine and my wife's experience, it might work awesome for you.
Ugh why couldn't straight talk just be available instead! Would make life so much easier!!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I was in the same boat. Att's gophone isn't bad if you are ok with using VoIP if you use more than 250 mins. If you find something else that works really good for you, I'd love to know, just so I have some usable options.
Well my experience was the opposite I think att sucks in Miami, dropped calls and data is slower and now you have a data cap no thanks. Only problem I see with T-Mobile and this is even on my postpaid is data is fast but sometimes you try to connect to something and it just never goes and times out. CS told me its because whenever someone requests internet you get pushed to the back of the list and best thing is to turn data on and off again. It sucks I know but att is worse in my experience and way better than sprint.

I appreciate the input... Here in new Haven ct att is awesome though, which really influences my decision... I love the T-Mobile speeds but the coverage is garbage at best...

St and n10 are owned by the same company I hated both of them so I went to tmobile

I'm seriously jealous of you tmboile guys, I was with them for 5 years and loved em, there's no coverage here though
I am doing this because i have seen many negative reviews for NET10 and would like to share my experience...Just ported over from the T-Mobile $30 plan to the net10 $50 unlimited plan for both my lines last night at around 6pm. Bought the sims at best buy for $15 (3 pack - 2 at&t, 1 micro and one regular, and one regular T-Mobile one) and the unlimited for two lines card ( I believe it was $90 there)... ported over my lines and took all of a half hour to port... Had to call customer service a few times with questions (once was my fault as I accidentally used the T-Mobile Sim instead of the at&t Sim) and they were super helpful. The service is fantastic, not one dropped call or dead zone and I'm getting 2-3 Mbps, which is a fine trade off from T-Mobile. I could get 12 mbps with T-Mobile but never had any service indoors.
I give net10 two thumbs up so far... Will update with any new info or bad news.
Edit: I would also like to say that I traveled the northern corridor of CT today with a branch out to Bristol and almost full bars HSPA the entire time... My battery is in heaven.

Can't use Internet while on phone

My s4 could do this. now it gives an offline error. What the hell is wrong with the s5? It's like they hired someone from iPhone genius product team. This is a step backwards. Also phone never connects to 4g. Probably a personal problem

Sounds like the problem is one in the same because if you aren't on 4G (or wifi) you can't simultaneously talk or text and use data.
Do you know if other phones in your area get 4g? If so, try roobooting/ re inserting your Sim card. You could also try to change your network from "global" to "LTE/CDMA".
My RAZR had this problem all the time and usually a reboot helped. Or 4g could be out (was out for a week in my town).
Did the geniuses at Verizon give you a new SIM card with your S5 our use your old one? When I got muy S5 they tried to use my old one and it had all sorts of problems, the next day I went back and a guy who knew what he was doing asked the very question I opened up with and I told him the reused my old one, and here told me the came with a new one for a reason! He switched it out, all little bugs gone, worked great until the camera gave out, but that is a different issue!
Thank you all for the replies. costco rep advised me to call tech support so I'm giving that a try before taking back in for 2nd return (first return for defective bluetooth)
They originally had me use my Sim card and took mine out the phone that it came with. Then the NFc didn't work because of sim. So i go there and get a sim they pulled out of another s5 like they did mine and told me to call Verizon to activate it.
Thing is. 4g was working fine on that phone. Bluetooth was the problem and now on this device the 4g. I think it's the 4G hardware...
Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Right.. Hardware related.
but yes.. you can only use data while on the phone if your phone has 4g or on wifi since 3g uses the same signal as your calls do so fix the 4g and you should b good to go
