My s4 could do this. now it gives an offline error. What the hell is wrong with the s5? It's like they hired someone from iPhone genius product team. This is a step backwards. Also phone never connects to 4g. Probably a personal problem

Sounds like the problem is one in the same because if you aren't on 4G (or wifi) you can't simultaneously talk or text and use data.
Do you know if other phones in your area get 4g? If so, try roobooting/ re inserting your Sim card. You could also try to change your network from "global" to "LTE/CDMA".
My RAZR had this problem all the time and usually a reboot helped. Or 4g could be out (was out for a week in my town).
Did the geniuses at Verizon give you a new SIM card with your S5 our use your old one? When I got muy S5 they tried to use my old one and it had all sorts of problems, the next day I went back and a guy who knew what he was doing asked the very question I opened up with and I told him the reused my old one, and here told me the came with a new one for a reason! He switched it out, all little bugs gone, worked great until the camera gave out, but that is a different issue!
Thank you all for the replies. costco rep advised me to call tech support so I'm giving that a try before taking back in for 2nd return (first return for defective bluetooth)
They originally had me use my Sim card and took mine out the phone that it came with. Then the NFc didn't work because of sim. So i go there and get a sim they pulled out of another s5 like they did mine and told me to call Verizon to activate it.
Thing is. 4g was working fine on that phone. Bluetooth was the problem and now on this device the 4g. I think it's the 4G hardware...
Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Right.. Hardware related.
but yes.. you can only use data while on the phone if your phone has 4g or on wifi since 3g uses the same signal as your calls do so fix the 4g and you should b good to go

hey guys, i got my GSIII for Bell about 2 weeks ago (and Bell has an LTE network). so a few day sfter i got it, i got no service at a place where i always get 3-4 bars, i rebooted the phone and the problem was gone. it happened again the same day and i rebooted again and it was fixed again. nothing has happened since, until yesterday. i was on my way to work and took a glance at my phone and it said unregistered SIM, so i rebooted it and it took a few minutes for it to gain access to the network again. today it happened again and i rebooted again and got LTE and HSPA back. has anyone else had this problem at all? it kinda sucks seeing as i paid full price for it and its acting up like this. any help would be appreciated
thanks
Get a new sim from Bell before you swap out devices.

ya ill try that, hopefully its just a faulyt sim or something
I have this problem too. Think it may be the device as I've had two Sims (first one wasn't lte) keep us posted might try another sim to be sure

ya im going in tomorrow to get a new SIM, hope they dont charge me, ill def keep u guys posted
this has nothing to do with the SIM. I have the same problem (also with Bell) and I called them. They are aware of this situation and are working on a solution. Usually happens when you go from LTE to HSPA.
They told me to switch my settings to GSM/HSPA instead of GSM/HSPA/LTE until its fixed. My SIM is new btw.
Have you tryed doing a battery pull? There is sometimes temp data that causes issues and a battery pull fixes it. When I got my S3 on launch day they said there was a delay in the network so it will be about 30mins before it shows registered SIM and works for me almost 3hrs later still no service. Went to my rep and asked me if I did a battery pull said no only tryed rebooting. Once I pulled the battery wait 30sec and put it back all was well. Try that if the issue is still there them most likely a SIM card problem and you need to go to a Bell store and sort it out.

and by changing to GSM/HSPA has it stopped the unregistered SIM problem so far? cuz LTE isnt a huge deal for me to have right now
that would be unfortunate as LTE is something that I really use now that its turned on at my workplace. If thats the case I hope an update comes soon.

of course, like I said , they are aware of the problem.
I change it back to LTE when I need speed (tethering).

ya the guy at the bell store told me to do the same thing today, said their LTE network is messed up right now and its not just GSIII's that are having these problems..on an aside, this morning i had my phone fully charged and had a 4 hour shift at work, at the end of the shift, after barely using it, my battery was at 7% ridulous, he said it was prolly cuz the phone was constantly searching for an LTE network, hopefully switching the network now increases my battery life!
I have not had any issues that i've seen other have on the forums but there is one issue i am having...
After the first few hours of use the antenna has either cut out completely and I see "no service" or only Edge is available.
Rebooting + open/close sim tray does not fix the problem. I am on T-Mobile.
I had to call in and have them "reset" the data on my line in order the get h+ speeds again. Also my buddy said they told him the Sim card that came with the phone, if from t mobile, could be a different type and if I keep getting issues they recommended to go into the store and request a new one. He also is having terrible speeds on t mobile. We are both seeing about 600kbs down and 1000kbs upload speeds. Used to be much better with my galaxy nexus....so I will check with them tomorrow again

I have a similar problem but for me the H icon never goes away. It works for a good time but then all of a sudden it doesn't load anything. It comes and goes and it's really annoying.
Did you guys cut your sim card into micro or is it a real micro sim card?
My reception is pretty poor. It drops pretty randomly at times which can be frustrating, something that my Galaxy Nexus never did. I typically only see 2G speeds though due to my area.

I cut my Sim and having the same issue... Guess I have to get a real micro sim
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I am using a microsim ... the one that came with the phone since I purchased through T-Mobile online.
I think it is the sim card because it looks like there are scratches on it after I had swaped it back to my vibrant with a microsim adapter.
I will go to the store today when they open and get a new sim. Hopefully this will fix this issue. It was working perfectly fine earlier.
My N4 is dropping calls and losing network connection like crazy. I'm using the same Sim that was in my SIII. It had no such issues.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I haven't had your problem, but I did cut my SIM to a microSIM, and the first 2 times I put it in, the N4 would not recognize it. Since then, I've put it in 2 more times and it's been fine. Did you cut your SIM into a microSIM? Maybe the phone is extra picky about placement.
SOLVED
Got a new MicroSIM and It works perfectly. My original microSIM did get scratched too hard when using a MicroSim to SIM adapter (i was testing the microsim on my old phone)
I'm happy now

NVM. Same b.s just happened again with the new sim. Idk whats going on here. The antenna is randomly choosing to be on HSPA, EDGE, or nothing... I'll wait it out for a day or two.. see if things change
Why would I have to?

Ugh. That sucks. Sorry to hear.
what really sucks is that I dont have any other issues with it. Every problem that i see on the forums is not existant on my nexus. I am scared that if it ever gets replaced that the new one may not be as perfect as this one is
I'm Having the exact same problem, except on AT&T. Coming from an Atrix 4G, cut the sim down to micro size, only had a network connection for the first 30 seconds after a reboot. I just got off the phone with a AT&T CSR to activate a new micro sim i picked up earlier today, he said IMEI showed up in their system as Unknown, according to him because "it's an unlocked device, so it shows up on our systems as unknown." After doing the switch anyway, connection held for about 5 minutes, and now i'm back to square one. Maybe APN settings? Is this a problem with the N4, or the service?

I would think it may be an issue with the N4 since some people are perfectly fine with their connection, but then there's others like us who can't get it too work all the time =(
i think its a manufacturing defect
I'm thinking definitely manufacturing defect now, I went into a t-mobile store and tried one of their sim cards - same result. I even tried flashing everything completely back to stock, but the problem remains. Am I the only one experiencing this? I can't find any similar results..
EDIT: You guys think I should hold off on sending it back in until they have more in stock? So I'm not completely N4-less for 3 weeks?
Hey guys lurker here finally registering to get some help.
I have a nexus 4 with T-Mobile. I bought it unlocked through Google and have it on the same plan I had my G2 on.
My problem is every time I get into a HSPA area my service just drops. Like completely drops. I cannot even make a call. It will come on then off then on then off. It makes the phone useless. When I'm on edge it's perfectly fine.
I went to T Mobile and got a brand new sim car and that did not help my problem.
Much appreciated any help I can get.
Factory reset first and see what happens.

That happens when the radio on the N4 switches between 3G and HSPA doing a factory reset won't affect the radio. In other words its the carrier coverage in your area. Try Straight Talk with At&t

I've got a Nexus 4 on AT&T and i've got HSPA (no +, i've checked in settings). It seems when my phone switches between towers i lose service until i go in and select AT&T from a list of available networks. On other phones in this area i always have Tmobile and AT&T, but with this one i'm getting two AT&T's. I usually select AT&T, but the last few days i've tried selecting "automatically select network." It doesnt appear to have made any changes. Just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before i factory reset this bad boy.
Factory reset, reflash of the stock ROM using the nexus toolkit, unroot and custom Roms cm10 and paranoid android. Nothing has helped my issue. I have the LTE plan and the WAP APN gives me hspa+. Still getting a signal drop every time I move more than a mile or so.

Hello xda!
Okay, so I seem to have some very very bad issue with my brand new Nexus 4. It is currently on the latest JDQ39 radio, unlocked and rooted. So here''s where the actual issue lies.
So to make it a long story short, I bought the $30 prepaid plan on the walmart website. You know, called up T-Mobile activated it, plugged in my SIM card and all, I dial #BAL# and everything's how it should be! BUT.. I decide to send a text to inform a friend of my new number (coming from US Cellular) and it takes a good long while for it to actually send.. about 2 minutes.. I think to myself," Something's wrong.." so I decide to call a random person to make sure I've got my service. It says dialing, then "Call ended" every single time! Can anyone tell me if it's an APN Issue? Or what do I do! I am panicking! I need to have service..!!! My signal strength is -91dBm and 8 asu
It's set to WCDMA preferred, and I'm honestly lost and helpless.. HELP PLEASE!
I've also restored my stock nandroid!
Bump..

They put up a ticket, refreshed me on their tower, reconnected and disconnected, still not working. The only workaround was to use 2G only instead of actually taking advantage of the HSPA+ data. It bothers me but at least it works..

Try calling 1-877-789-3106. This is the T-Mobile porting department. I had a delay of 3 days trying to port my number from Verizon to T-Mobile. I called this number, and they were able resolve the issue right away.
Although the rep said it could take 24 hrs, I got a text msg that my number had been activated on T-Mobile as I was ending the call.
BTW, I am very happy that I switched! $30/month for 5GB of 4G data!

Ever since I took OTA update I cannot get the LTE to stay locked on it keeps going back to 3g. My wife has the same phone and hers stays in LTE. So I know it isn't the towers. She took the OTA update also. The only difference is mine is rooted on the new KK. Anyone else have that problem? Sorry I'm on Verizon Network VS980 4gG LTE
Well I downgraded back to Jelly Bean VS98012B and stayed stock without root and still have the same problem with LTE. I switched Airplane mode off and then back on and I get LTE with 2 bars then it goes back to 3g with 2 bars. I wonder if its the phone or if I am being throttled by Verizon?
Well I seem to be answering my own questions. Turns out my sim card is bad. I tried my wife's and the phone went to LTE and stayed. I put mine in her phone and it stayed 3g. So hope this helps anyone else that would experience this. Glad its not the phone.

I'm actually having the same thing... keeps switching to 3G randomly, after a reboot it'll go to 4G LTE and usually stay, but often if I make a call, or do something it'll switch back to 3G for some time, then maybe go back to 4G... stock KK rooted here too
Did the SIM card fix it for you permanently? I may try getting a new one if so.
I'll second this. Had the same problem. New sim card and bam, fixed. For some reason I think going to international ROMs (cloudy and optimus) caused this.... The 3g roaming thing.. which is a shame because their ROMs are freaking awesome.

Yeah I went to my local mom & pop Verizon store and the idiot behind the counter said my old LTE sim card wasn't NFC ( Near Field Communications) complaint. Why is he an idiot that's another story. But I don't know how NFC has anything to do with the sim card. Anyway I bought a new one because they weren't a official Verizon store, supposedly the official store will give you a new sim card. But now the phone works like it is suppose too.
