[Q] Chinese Car DVD GPS Double Din Head Unit Upgrade? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I bought a Chinese DVD GPS head unit for my car running Windows CE 6.0. The unit has every feature under the sun and works remarkably well, much better than I had thought it would.
There are 2 main things which annoys me. The first is the media player playing music (SD or USB). There is no random/shuffle function, and when you have thousands of songs and it takes 2 - 3 seconds to skip to the next one, it gets annoying really quick! The second is also related to the media player. It plays a very limited number of video formats (avi, 3gp).
I figure the easiest way is to replace the media player with a better one (which I'm sure exists for CE 6).
So my question is can this be done? If so where do I start? How can I access CE operating system/firmware on the unit? It has a USB port, but that acts as a host so you can plug flash drives and dongles into it.
Has anyone played with these types of devices?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

AFAIK there is no third party player especially written for CE 6.0 around. All players written for CE are years old, i.e. outdated. I'm pretty sure your AIO doesn't use a rudimentary CE-player.

I'm a bit confused. The unit runs CE 6.0 for the GPS and IE. I've updated the gps software on it to run a different one. If my unit doesn't use a CE player, what is it using?

If really added by OEM to CE 6.0, the Windows Media Player control is built on top of Microsoft DirectShow. Consequently, the DirectShow codecs included in the OS design determine the exact list of media formats that the Windows Media Player control can play. OK. So it looks like I can't get it to play other codecs easily, that's fine. How about the other issue? Is there a way to replace the media player that the unit is using to another one which has a random/shuffle function? (Assuming I can find a media player with a random function)

Your device has an SD-card slot, correct? If so and if OEM implemented an SD-Autorun feature - means at boottime a specific named file located on SD-card will be processed, then you can "abuse" this SD-Autorun feature to modify the WinCE portion of your unit according to your needs. Most people do so using MortScript herefore

Yes my unit has 2 micro SD card slots. 1 is used for music, 1 is used for the GPS navigation. Interestingly there seems to be 2 different subsystems running on the unit. The GPS part acutally has a media player and IE which seems to only see 1 SD, and the music system which only sees the other SD card.
What is the easiest way to check if either has an autorun feature?

Then you alternatively might try: Put any WinCE-executable (currently recommended TotalCommander for CE6.0 - google for it) you want to run onto this SD-card and make unit's GPSPath and/or NaviPath point to it.

Update: It's a long story, but I'll give the short version.
I found out MioPocket which was supposed to turn my WCE GPS device into a fully functional unit ... Well it broke my WCE. Luckily my unit seems to have 2 units in it. 1 is the radio/dvd/bt/sd/usb etc, and the other is a WCE unit for the GPS. The actual radio still worked fine, but the WCE wouldn't load.
After a few days talking with the supplier in China, he sent me the recovery files. I put the recover file into the SD card and it flashed the WCE and it's back to normal.
So I'm not going to touch it anymore. Because even if I was able to get a CE media player working, the system doesn't actually use CE to play music. So I'll just have to live with my built in media player without random/shuffle function.

Do you still have the recovery files? Is there any chance you could upload these for us somewhere. It seems to me that this is the way for you to add/alter the software on the system?

Reviving this thread.
How do I run or reflash the unit? Do I just put this on the micro sd and it will auto run when I turn on the head unit?
Actually the problem is more on the GPS part of my head unit. I also have 2 micro sd card slots (1 for music and the other for gps). I was able to use the navi before but it suddenly stopped working (I am using Papago X8). Now I don't know if I should reflash Win CE or get another compatible gps software.
Thanks!

please if anyone could help i also would like to know how to access wince on these Chinese head units so that i can modify the gui.

Try this method:
http://www.austech.info/gps/84958-gps-ce-6-0-rescue-disk.html

Accessing the Windows O/S should be pretty straight forward on most of these units. You should be able to find in the unit settings a setting that allows you to point to the GPS software location. Instead of the gps software, download Total commander (google it) for windows CE, put it on your sd card, and then point the gps software link to total commander. Then press the gps button and total commander will pop up. This will give you access to the Win CE file system.

I realize this is an extremely old post but I'm hoping I can still get help. I have tried to download Total Commander but they only offer it as a windows xp install file that uses active sync to load it into the unit or as cab files. Neither of which I can put on an sd card and run from my windows ce 6 unit. Is there a way to just get the install files on an sd card from the computer?
Thanks

Cheers man, your a star...
2 birds with one stone, so you or anyone running the 1.1preview version ok or shall i just stick to installing 1.0?
I think I just plumped for the new beta, but to be fair, I have had little cause to actually use it yet - I just thought it's one of those things that should be on my XDA2.
You got a specific purpose in mind for using it, or some good links etc lined up like?

Well I own a nokia 3650 as well and have some movies in 3gp format that i wouldnt mind trying out on my xda2 - also think realplayer should be on a pocket pc if it can be on a nokia
Philips MPEG4 player is the best:
Main Application:
http://www.rarewares.org/files/mp4/platform4_player_for_pocketpc_3.0.exe
Patch:
http://pessoal.onda.com.br/rjamorim/M4A_PocketPC_patch.zip
also visit this site for other software:
http://www.rarewares.org/mp4.html
Patch doesn't work with the file in the first link.
Seems a good program still though.
Any ideas?
Scratch that - I've worked it out, so for the benefit of everyone else, this is what you have to do.
Install the application on your Pcocket PC.
THEN, you need to copy the actual Program file itself, from the Philips folder on your Pocket PC (once it has installed itself), back to the PC proper, and patch THAT file.
Then you simply copy the Program file itself, back to the Philips folder on the Pocket PC.
If you read that again, that should make sense.
You DO NOT patch the installer file - you patch the actual program file itself, once it is installed, but to do this, you need to copy it off the PPC, then back ONTO the PPC, once you have patched it.

Kinoma Play on TG01 (touchflo3D killer)

hello all
kinoma Play looks really impressive in this video. http://www.wmexperts.com/next-release-kinoma-play-features-its-own-home-screens
are there any toshiba tg01 rom dumps floating around?
i hope people here are interested in porting this thing to our ''htc devices
This is just the next update ok Kinoma Play, which can be dowloaded on ur HTC.
Just wait few weeks for the update.
It's a good soft indeed.
wow this is very good!
the thing feels like its running on a 3GHZ machine with a geforce 8800
too damn impressive on the tg01
As this software comes bundle with TG01, Toshiba might shared the API for hardware acceleration to Kinoma Team. Remember this is a entire new processor platform (named Snapdragon). This software would never perform like this in ours old MSX7200 processors.
truly impressive
twice as smooth as the iphone with 2.5x the number of pixels so that makes it 5x as immpressive
its hard to tell where the constant 60FPS is comming from. is it from the cool coding tricks or from the CPU specs of the TG01. looks like both
I just love the Toshiba TG01
And Kinoma doesn't seem to be so bad either
Sascha
greatttttttt
I've tried this program, but there are a few hangups that really keep me from using it.
The first one is that it will only "intelligently" scan your device and storage card. There is no option to setup what folders to scan or leave out of a scan. They're only response as a "fix" to this is to put any directory you don't want scanned in the Program Files folder on your device/card. This means I have to redo my entire storage structure to work around their smart scan.
Also, they don't support .avi video files. They say "It's not used for legitimate content distribution" and that "it was always a poorly-defined format with many undocumented mutations that make it a mess to implement and support".
Well, one can argue the legitimacy of certain files, but that's not up to the video player to decide IMO. I have purchased several legitimate programs that convert my DVDs into avi files for mobile playback.
And as far as a mess to implement and support, hell, my very first Casio Cassiopeia supported avi playback with TCPMP. So that's just a cop out as far as I'm concerned.
Yes, the program looks great and has many awesome features, but it just falls short in trying to think too much for me. If I wanted to be a "dumb" user and have a "smart" media player, I'd buy an iPhone.
the new version was just released maybe these issues were sorted out. how about you upgrade and let us know

Samsung Fridge with wireless TV

This may seem like a strange request but I have this wireless TV, it just so happens that it is attached to a refridgerator. Its made by Samsung and the TV is called an "I.C.E. Pad" and it runs its own software called Popcon. Being the curious engineer that I am, I found a USB connector on it and decided to plug it in. After connecting I noticed that it's just Windows CE that runs this popcon software at startup. Is there a way that I can interrupt the boot process in one of the .hv files to have this thing come up into explorer instead of the popcon software? In the windows folder there is a user.hv, default.hv and boot.hv files, I was told that these are the registry files and the boot.hv is where they startup is. The reason why I want to do this is because the TV runs on 802.11b wireless and would be nice if I can use this as a tablet when not using the TV and I could just run the popcon software when needed. I am in no way experienced with windows mobile or CE and would like to see if someone could help me. I've been able to dump just about everything of the two partitions onto my computer to play with them, just a few DLL's that won't copy due to sharing violations. Thanks for any help.
you should check out some GPS forums, they have more experience with Windows CE devices since a lot of GPS PNA devices are build on Win CE. There you will be able to find some tools to interrupt the boot process I suppose. A lot of PNA devices can boot custom software by using special files and folders on the storage card, do you have a storage card?
good luck...
VOODOOS!L
There is a connector next to the USB connector but have no idea what is for but a storage card woudn't fit, no matter what kind.
I'll try the GPS forums, thanks.
I ran into similar issues with a post I made about my own WinCE device. The thing about this forum is, there are loads of people who can answer questions about Windows Mobile, which is based on WinCE, but actually a seperate OS, since they share a kernel but much else is different.
Good luck finding some help with your WinCE device, but it seems most people here are only in their comfort area when talking about the Windows Mobile OS, which is only *based on* WinCE and is otherwise a completely different OS.

Omnia 7 as a portable USB drive

- Open Windows Registry Editor by typing regedit in your start menu
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
- Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB (and not the other ControlSet01 or 02 if you have them) and then search for ZuneDriver.
under VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00
In Device parameters
- Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1 <- this enable Windows Explorer to show the device when pluged in
- Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
- Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1 <- this enables Windows Explorer to detect the device
Plugin the phone to pc, close zune and The result will be this:

Haven't tried this hack myself but with the zune software I think it's not really necessary and quoting once again joe belfiore:
"Windows Phone is not a mass storage device. It’s a Zune device. The data on the phone must be consistent, and needs to be able to identify items in storage. We don’t want the user to have to do that stuff manually. Yes, some may want to. But we wanted a synchronization system that was simple and easy and does metadata mappings automatically"

I have absolutely no problem with it, sync is working perfectly and it's something different at least compared to mass storage where you need to copy all data "manually". Nevertheless microsoft will probably implement a way to use WP7 also as such a device.

i do. i want to be able to transfer any file to/from the device. zune software can't help me, because it accepts just a few file types (like media and pictures).
what if any applications need to use files of a certain type? how can i supply it with files then?
i just don't understand.
I have a problem with it too. I don't use Windows on my PC, I use Ubuntu, so cannot use the zune software!
Either MS needs to realise that they can't force people to use their OS or at least give people an option.

most likely an app that needs such files knows very well that it can't get them over zune, and provides the way to feed it (most likely a cloud solution, or something).

A-sure Win CE 6.0 car radio

I have a A-Sure Win CE6.0 car gps radio. It works well but I am looking for extra software features to add to the head unit. Especially car monitoring for OBD2. I have been told you can get it and have it installed rather then just run of an SD card. But I have looked all over internet and cant find anything.
Hi Jason
The WinCE online presence is not very good, in my poor experience with WinCE car radio.
The first thing you need to know is:
1) How to run WinCE software from the SD card in you radio. It changes from one manufacturer to other, but it is usually done by replacing the Map navigation software on your SD.
2) Try to document the internal hardware of you WinCE radio. I used a software called RESINFO.
Free WR-Tools ResInfo Software Download
WR-Tools ResInfo - WR-Tools ResInfo shows the most important system resources of a Windows CE device, in a tab control dialog box as well as in the notification area of the menu bar. The Tool informs about battery life, program and storage memory, largest files and databases, processor...

3) I haven't used any OBD2 app on WinCE. But I found this one:
- http://hobdrive.com/ (Windows Mobile is WinCE)
Please let me know if you find any more OBD2 WinCE applications.
