System backup...consfused...?!???

Hi i have a question. Is there a way to perform complete system backup BEFORE rooting my phone. ...that i can have total system backup like the mobile came with? tnx for answers...

I can't remember for sure, as I've only ever seen it a couple of times, but I think you can backup and restore from the original recovery mode, just like in CWM recovery.
Turn the phone off and then press and hold volume up, home and power. Keep them held till the menu appears. If you can backup and restore from that menu then that's what you're looking for. If you can't then you're probably not gonna get anywhere until you get firmware with CWM flashed. Despite what other people will no doubt say, Titanium Backup will not backup and restore your whole ROM the way it currently is. It's perfect for apps and associated data, but not whole system backups.

yeah im not sure...i will try. But to have CWM you must have root...so again is rooted and not original...

you can't, all you can do is note the exact rom you are presently using and download it in case you need to go back.
When the phone is rooted and a custom recovery is installed, then you would have the ability to back-up your phone

Just root, install cwm and make a backup although the backup will have root you can just remove it if you ever need to restore the back up

i am asking all this because i buy mobile on provider network. so i dont know if they put some settings inside,that canot be undone when root/flash...

Aslong as you backup straight after root i cant see you having problems its only the kernel and recovery that changes that i can gather.

ok many thanks...i didnt know that only the kernel changes...but on other hand im not sure which vodafone original kernel put back when i need it...or deosent mather.???

New Nexus Questions

Bout to get my nexus 4, will be dropped off by UPS tomorow. And i have a few questions, if anyone will be kind enough to answer.
Would it be a smart idea to unlock the bootloader and root it with TWRP recovery like the second i take it out of the box so that way i dont have to back anything up?
And then, when i decide to switch to a non stock ROM i will just need Titanium backup to backup my stuff and then im good to go?
Also, one more question, since nexus's dont have SD cards, wont my titanium backups get wiped when i flash a rom?

1) Yes it would probably be a good idea to unlock and root right away. That's what I done with my Nexus 7. I didn't install recovery though because I wasn't interested in custom ROMs. If you're going to be flashing things right away then yes install the recovery aswell.
2) Titanium Backup will do that perfectly for you but you could always just make the backup through recovery. As you said you'll be using TWRP it means you can restore data separately from a backup anyway.
3) You don't need to worry about backups being wiped because they're stored in the internal SD. It's essentially just space to make sure important things can still be safe even if you factory reset.

Btw I would recommend Helium instead of Titanium Backup for backing up your stuff. Works much more efficiently, at least for me. Helium backs up everything, apps and app data, launcher, WiFi settings, user dictionary, launcher setup, and all your SMS data. I really like it and I've fully replaced Titanium Backup with it.

After you root & unlock the device I strongly suggest you play around with the phone for a few days and see how battery is and its performance as well. After those few days if you want you could just install any rom or kernel you want. You'll thank me later. Lol

[Q] Need to re-install official MF3 after rooting and deleting applications.

Hello xda-dev,
I'm having trouble finding somebody else with a similar situation as mine:
So I picked up my new I337 from Costco this week. While using it throughout the week, I was very unfortunate as to allow the MF3 update from ATT to successfully update on my device. (This is the part where I cry because I can't install GE or custom bootloaders)
While doing some more research, I finally used this method to get root access after which I got Titanium Backup to remove the stock ATT bloatware.
I then proceeded to carefully un-install about a dozen or so applications most of which were ATT garbage.
Now maybe I uninstalled something crucial, or maybe certain applications need the ATT bloatware to run correctly, but my problem now is that Music and S-Voice both crash moments after starting them, so I would like to re-install my OTA MF3 update.
I understand that I have no shot downgrading or installing custom boot loaders at the moment, but I know that the MF3 rom seems to be available here.
Is there any risk in me getting Odin and attempting to install the rom using down+home+power way? (Sorry don't know the name for this procedure yet.)
I have come to peace with being stuck on MF3, but at the same time I would like to regain full functionality of my S-Voice and Music.
How would I go about safely re-installing my OS?

Using titanium backup, set both programs to be user apps, reboot, and switch back to system apps. Worked for me with Svoice, Smusic, and a few other programs. No more "Unfortunately xxxx has stopped" messages.

This works for me... to an extent. S-Voice will only continue to run if I keep it as a user app.
Still no luck with the Stock Music player.
Will check the other threat now for a solution regarding a complete OS wipe.

Have you tried wiping your dalvik cache yet?

I have tried wiping the "cache partition" as well as "wipe data/factory reset" from the stock recovery boot menu with no result.
Also I'm not sure, but I don't think I can wipe the Dalvik without a custom bootloader?? (Even after reading around, I don't understand the difference between Dalvik and what I have tried.)
EDIT: I really think, the reinstall would be my best option. I'm most curious to know if I'm at risk of bricking my device if I try to restore the MF3 rom from the earlier thread.

I could be wrong but I don't think you could flash that without a custom recovery.

Apparently I cannot post outside links...
Google what is dalvik cache, also check out system tuner app in the play store, this app has a feature for wiping your dalvik cache along with a ton of other things.

Just so its clear, you can NOT flash the rom in your link. Luckily, you won't be able to since you don't have a custom recovery. Trying to put a recovery on and flashing that rom could cause irreparable damage to your phone. You're mf3 and are severely limited to what you can do.
If you continue to mess with tibu, freeze the apps, don't delete them. That way if you mess something up you can get them back

You extract the contents of that ROM, and a manually add in the missing apps until your problem dissapears (will prob have to change permissions on each added app to "rw-r-r" and reboot for apps replaced apps to take effect)
That should work...and next time use titanium back up to actually back up, than freeze apps reboot see if there's any problems...if none than uninstall

Just to add to their arguments, absolute no flashing with odin on the MF3. Period. You will definitely mess something up. I'm thinking you altered the system recovery by getting rid of some stuff. You are going to have to wait until the devs come out with something.

I just had my S4 rooted w TowelRoot. This is my first rooted Android. I installed titanium pro and have backed up some apps then Uninstalled said bloatware. I have been trying to find out how to do a Nandroid or complete backup so that I can move forward with my learning in safety. If anyone can guide me with the steps to do next I would greatly appreciate it. The videos and info I've seen has not been on point. Thank you

You have to flash a custom recovery first before you can make a nandroid backup.
But notice that this will increase the Knox counter

I'm not concerned about the warranty. I thought you're supposed to backup the system before you flash anything. I wasn't in a hurry to flash a new rom or os because I'm a novice on rooting and I wanted to see what apps and freedoms I have in its present condition. But before I attempt to Delete something like ANT I wanted to do a system backup because the warning said ant is tied in to.....

Just chose "backup all user apps + system data. This its a complete backup from all apps and their data. So you can delete system apps you won't use and don't have to worry about the function of your devise, because you still have a backup.
A system backup or nandroid backup is something different and you can only do one if you flashe a custom recovery.
But then Knox counter will increase

Copy all of my apps from my S3 Mini to the S5?

Hi there, I'm new to the Galaxy S5 forum and don't actually own the device itself yet, but I'm planning on getting it in a few months so here goes my ? :
Since I've got around 300 apps on my current phone, I don't wanna download and update each apps's settings all over again when I get my new S5 and I was wondering if doing a nandroid backup of my S3 Mini containing just the "data" partition and restoring it on the S5 will work and all of my apps will be copied over with all of their settings untouched, BUT I also won't lose any of the preinstalled apps on the S5 itself?
Or maybe I can try this app and make flashable zips of my apps and then flash them on the GS5?
This has always been the main trouble I have had when switching phones before, though I never switched from Android to Android. Hope someone can shed some light on my question and make me buy the S5 sooner Good night all!!

Will do, but will any of the methods I described work? I just don't wanna install an app if it is possible just with TWRP.

I have used titanium backup pro for 5 years and even more phones. I have never had a problem with any of the backups or restores.

+1 for Titanium backup.
Other method, google for nandroid manager (need root so).
Just copy your (previous) recovery backup on phone, and restore via nandroid manager all that you want.
Be aware of system apps not to restore of course.

Won't this actually work just by hitting restore in TWRP and choosing only the "data" part of my backup (why an app)? Or maybe TWRP won't recognise my S3 Mini backup, because it's from another phone?

No, I don't think so.
AFAIK, restoring data will restore all data without restrictions, and it could be bad if you come from another phone or ROM.
With nandroid manager, you can choose what you want to restore (app or app+data) for user app or system app, for every app you want.
You have to copy your last backup from old phone to new one, choose it by nandroid manager then navigate for options of restore.
You can restore bluetooth-wifi pairings, sms, mms, call logs, and apps (app or app+data).

I think that choosing Advanced Restore in TWRP settings gets you to this window and then you choose what to restore. It's the same with backing up, you choose backup and then select with "x" the partitions you wanna backup. I just didn't know if restoring just "data" will break my phone, but now I know it won't, because when the phone is new there aren't going to be any apps installed in the "data" partition (all are pre-installed in "system"). So I'll just have to go to TWRP, choose advanced restore and only select "data" with "x", then swipe to restore. If something goes wrong I can always go back to recovery and wipe "data" (I'll still have all of my system apps) or even flash a stock ROM with Odin

My S5 arrives next week I'm gonna use this app, because I don't want to restore all of my apps (gonna flash Alliance 5.6 so.. xD). Will report if it works, as promised

A word of caution.......
Your new S5 will be preinstalled with KK.
If your old phone has a different version of Android, be VERY cautious about installing app data.....There is a very good chance that doing so will cause instability and force closes of your apps.......
Restoring the apps themselves this way shouldn't cause any issue......you'll just see a message that says something like "android is upgrading.......1 of xx apps" before your phone starts.....but as I said, data *may* prove to be a whole other issue.......
