[Q] Need to re-install official MF3 after rooting and deleting applications. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello xda-dev,
I'm having trouble finding somebody else with a similar situation as mine:
So I picked up my new I337 from Costco this week. While using it throughout the week, I was very unfortunate as to allow the MF3 update from ATT to successfully update on my device. (This is the part where I cry because I can't install GE or custom bootloaders)
While doing some more research, I finally used this method to get root access after which I got Titanium Backup to remove the stock ATT bloatware.
I then proceeded to carefully un-install about a dozen or so applications most of which were ATT garbage.
Now maybe I uninstalled something crucial, or maybe certain applications need the ATT bloatware to run correctly, but my problem now is that Music and S-Voice both crash moments after starting them, so I would like to re-install my OTA MF3 update.
I understand that I have no shot downgrading or installing custom boot loaders at the moment, but I know that the MF3 rom seems to be available here.
Is there any risk in me getting Odin and attempting to install the rom using down+home+power way? (Sorry don't know the name for this procedure yet.)
I have come to peace with being stuck on MF3, but at the same time I would like to regain full functionality of my S-Voice and Music.
How would I go about safely re-installing my OS?

Using titanium backup, set both programs to be user apps, reboot, and switch back to system apps. Worked for me with Svoice, Smusic, and a few other programs. No more "Unfortunately xxxx has stopped" messages.

EDIT: This should be the link for the original thread about this problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282959

Thank you so much, Doymecca.
This works for me... to an extent. S-Voice will only continue to run if I keep it as a user app.
Still no luck with the Stock Music player.
Will check the other threat now for a solution regarding a complete OS wipe.

Have you tried wiping your dalvik cache yet?

EDIT: Here us a thread about wiping dalvik
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752390

I have tried wiping the "cache partition" as well as "wipe data/factory reset" from the stock recovery boot menu with no result.
Also I'm not sure, but I don't think I can wipe the Dalvik without a custom bootloader?? (Even after reading around, I don't understand the difference between Dalvik and what I have tried.)
EDIT: I really think, the reinstall would be my best option. I'm most curious to know if I'm at risk of bricking my device if I try to restore the MF3 rom from the earlier thread.

I could be wrong but I don't think you could flash that without a custom recovery.

Apparently I cannot post outside links...
Google what is dalvik cache, also check out system tuner app in the play store, this app has a feature for wiping your dalvik cache along with a ton of other things.

Just so its clear, you can NOT flash the rom in your link. Luckily, you won't be able to since you don't have a custom recovery. Trying to put a recovery on and flashing that rom could cause irreparable damage to your phone. You're mf3 and are severely limited to what you can do.
If you continue to mess with tibu, freeze the apps, don't delete them. That way if you mess something up you can get them back

You extract the contents of that ROM, and a manually add in the missing apps until your problem dissapears (will prob have to change permissions on each added app to "rw-r-r" and reboot for apps replaced apps to take effect)
That should work...and next time use titanium back up to actually back up, than freeze apps reboot see if there's any problems...if none than uninstall

Thanks for the quick replies, everyone. I appreciate your help.
After much more research, I do see that there is no MF3 factory image available yet. I guess I wait til then.

Just to add to their arguments, absolute no flashing with odin on the MF3. Period. You will definitely mess something up. I'm thinking you altered the system recovery by getting rid of some stuff. You are going to have to wait until the devs come out with something.

[Q] Switching ROMs

I have a quick question. When switching ROMs should I also in addition to factory reset, also perform a system/wipe to wipe the already installed custom ROM? Thanks.
It is generally unnecessary, but not a bad idea to do so. Most devs have their updater script format /system, but you'll find the occasional one that omits that one line.

Alright. So I shouldn't worry about performing system wipe?

I think it's better to wipe the system. As I've faced many kind of froblem because of a dirty flash. And I've seen many bug reports on several ROM thread and it just came out that it's not the ROM but the dirty flash is causing the problem. It will probably take 1-2hr to get back to the previous position so what's the big didfference??

OK. So when switching ROMs I should perform factory restore, wipe all caches, as well as system/wipe to erase the ROM currently installed. I have done it that way before but I always get nervous when I wipe system, cause now it has no ROM installed at all and I don't want anything to happen in that case. But thanks for the quick reply

What could happen?? Hardbrick?? A little chance..... Here's what I think when I do something risky. Just Think like I don't have any device if I can get this device back it's bonus for me.
You can always flash a rom whatever it has one or not untill your device can be booted into fastboot. So don't be afraid if something bad(!?) happens and you can boot into fastboot mode. Once I even had no boot just the fastboot it took less than 5 min to get a system on it.
And dirty flash is always an option. I myself had and seen many people having problems with it.

[Q] Rooted, CM 10.1, clean rom, now stuck...need help!

Hey, I could really use some guidance here. I'll present the information as simply as I can:
I bought a Galaxy s4 AT&T a few days ago. I've been interested in rooting and flashing different roms, but I think I may have done a bit too much.
I rooted using the motochopper method - great, worked like a charm.
I made a backup of my original rom using CWM. I even took that backup and saved a copy of it on my Mac - perfect.
I thought I'd try Cyanogenmod 10.1, so I downloaded the latest nightly build and flashed it using CWM - so far so good.
Everything was working fine, but my LTE (or any data) was not working at all. I could use Wifi, but once I turned wifi off, I had no data, no gps, no 3g, no 4g, no LTE. I tried the *#*#4636*#*# method, the LTEOnOff app, and changing my APN based on the recommendations provided in this thread - I just couldn't get it to work.
I thought I'd try restoring my original backup, but when I went into CWM to do so, it said that my backup could not be found...(I still have a backup on my computer, just in case)
I needed my phone to work, and badly needed LTE to do so. So, I downloaded this rom: [ROM] CleanROM 1.0 -★| Clean and Smooth! | The Way Nature Intended! |★-
So far, this rom was working fine - it's just a debloated version of TouchWiz - which I like. But, here's my problem now - If my phone reboots, it stays frozen on the Samsung logo (with unlocked lock logo underneath), and I can't get past it. I'd have to go BACK into recovery, and flash the CleanROM all over again, and set my phone up as new with all data wiped.
I really need my phone to work again, and I don't know where to go from here. What options do I have left? What can I do to get out of that frozen Samsung loading screen? Can't I just reset my phone to the way it was? Can't the CM10.1 rom work with LTE?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Your best option is to flash the stock MDB firmware via odin . After you get the PASS on Odin go ahead and manually boot into stock recovery and wipe data factory reset again then reboot. You will have to re root and reinstall recovery but this will take care of any issues you had from a bad flash.

Having the same issue so I figured I'd give these steps a shot. Followed them exactly and phone (AT&T S4, TWRP) would won't even reboot the first time into CleanROM. I'm stuck on the Samsung screen with the lock.
edit: I've noticed that now, when I reboot into TWRP, it prompts me for a password. Hitting cancel takes me to the regular home screen, but I had not been getting the password prompt before attempting to install CleanROM. A permissions issue, perhaps?
edit 2:
I've just spent some time trying a bunch of things with bits of good luck surrounded with tons of bad. Below are the steps I've taken to try to get CleanROM to boot (and reboot) without any issues. Hopefully they help figure out the issues we're having.
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Wipe /system
Flash CleanROM

I can't speak for OP, but I was hoping there was another way to rectify what has already been done without flashing stock seeing as how I'm on OSX. If that's the only option, then so be it.
Hey. Thanks for the feedback in this thread. I flashed factory through Odin, and everything is working fine. I then factory reset my phone through factory recovery. I'm back to standard touchwiz with all the bloat lol.
I'm going to wait until there a more stable release of cm10.1 - that was a good rom.

As I mentioned before starting over is always the Best and Safe way to go. Shortcuts will only cause you headaches and possibly get you a brick that is why you see Odin stock threads. [Q] Backup option not available after flashing CWM?

Hey guys, if anyone can help me with this, please reply.
I am on an At&t Galaxy S4 MF3 1337 and just recently installed Rom Manager, then flashed CWM recovery. It was successful, but when I reboot to the recovery screen, I do not have any options to "backup and restore" my stock rom, which I'd like to preserve in case anything goes wrong. I would like to flash Cyanogenmod, but will not attempt it without having a backup saved. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to show up. If it helps, I rooted my phone through the simplest way, with a one click root. My only options are things like:
1. reboot system
2. apply update from ADB
3. apply update from external storage
4. wipe date/factory reset
5. wipe cache partition
6. apply update from cache.
Please help me out here guys, I have googled this problem endlessly, and a few have the same problem, but they aren't making the solutions on how or if they fixed it clear enough for me to understand. Yes, I am a noob, if that wasn't obviously already! If there is any other information I can provide you to help me, please let me know. Thanks in advance!
I'm not an expert but I don't think you can do that if you are on MF3. You have to use Safe Strap and then your limited on what you can flash. I would suggest more reading before you brick it.

PLEASE HELP. Boot loops to recovery

I installed the HORSEMAGEDDON ROM and it worked - for the most part. But it kept giving me annoying errors about different apps that were attempting to update every time I turned it on. So I tried to restore my backup that I had made with CWM 6.0.2.8. However the backup apparently did not restore properly because it now boot loops back into CWM any time I try to start it. I get the errors:
E:Can't open cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open cache/recovery/last_log
So I tried to reflash HORSEMAGEDDON but it still loops back into the CWM recovery screen.
I have wiped everything according to the instructions on the HORSEMAGEDDON thread.
HELP!! This happened to me on another U8800-51 phone and I wound up hard bricking it trying to get back to stock.
Anybody???
Does anybody have any ideas on how I can fix this?

Okay. Here is what I did step by step:
1. I was on Stock 2.2.2 Froyo and flashed HORSEMAGEDDON successfully. But I had some errors related to updates since it was such an old ROM the updates were all for much newer versions of the apps tied to 4.x.x.
2. I attempted to restore my backup made with CWM 6 to return to the stock. It said it completed successfully but when I rebooted it just looped into the recovery screen with the error messages posted in my first post.
3. So I tried to reflash HORSEMAGEDDON and it said it completed successfully. But it still bootloops into recovery.
4. I can access most of the features of the recovery. I can access the pink screen and swap recovery versions. I can access my SD card from my PC when I mount it from recovery.
5. Yes, I did do full wipes with each attempt to reflash.
The ROM was not the problem. It worked and worked well other than update issues for apps. It was only after attempting to restore to stock I ran into issues.
The problem appears to be something was corrupted when I tried to restore my backup, even though it said it completed successfully.
So if I try to flash yet another custom ROM, even if I could find one I trust given all of the version issues etc., I don't think it would act any differently. But if somebody can recommend one I am all ears. Keep in mind I have a -51 phone so it will have to be for that or the PRO.
Given that, how can I get back to stock? Am I the only person who has ever had this problem? I don't believe that is the case, so somebody must know how to fix it or can point me to a procedure to repair the internal memory.

None of the fixes on this link seem to apply to my situation.
When I said "bootloop" I may have misused the term. What happens is I power up, it goes to logo screen for about 10 seconds, shuts down and restarts to logo screen then goes into recovery after about 5 seconds. From other info that I have found it is due to a corrupt bootloader and I need to reflash the bootloader. Problem is, reflashing the bootloader i.e. CWM, does no good at all.
I am also hampered by lack of info specific to the -51 model. And I cannot find a copy of the stock ROM anywhere that is for the -51.
So essentially I am screwed. All of that said, I have found a new phone for $40.00 so all is not lost. It's a U8800 but not the -51 or PRO. I don't plan on customizing it, I'll just stick with stock. After trashing two phones even after following the advice to "BACKUP" I think enough is enough. Backing up did me no good whatsoever in both cases.
In my estimation, the culprit is CWM, or at least the versions I used.
If anybody has any advice I'm all ears.

How long has it been since youve cleared your ROM's cache/dalvik cache. Somethimes cached settings can muck things up. If clearing your caches doesnt help, try using Odin to flash a different modem meant for your device.
What ROM are you on? What version of Android is that ROM based off of?

I'm pretty sure I can't clear my devlik with my stock recovery. Is there a way to load twpr, clear everything then put my stock recovery back in place without losing all my data?

You can install busybox, then install SafeStrap. SafeStrap is based off of TWRP and has the majority of the same functions.

Safestrap will allow you to clear cache & dalvik without wiping data or messing with your stock system. You can always uninstall via the app you use to install Safestrap. You can get it and instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610.
To clear your cache/dalvik only, in Safestrap go to Wipe > Advanced > Select Cache & Dalvik Cache > Swipe > Reboot. Your phone should show Android upgrading apps message upon boot and then you're done.
If this doesn't work you could try flashing a modem via odin as asrah suggested, but I would be doubtful that would fix anything as it sounds like a system file issue not firmware. The modems ccan be found in the following post.
If this doesn't fix your wifi you may need to wipe your system and reflash your stock rom. You have a couple of options:
Start fresh via odin and reroot. Stock files here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524572.
Or
Flash a stock, prerooted NC4 rom. Instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787627.
The latter would be the quickest route if you still have Safestrap installed.
If you have any questions just ask.

That ROM/Firmware/Kernel (some part of one or more of the three) have been responsible for two SIM locks. I highly doubt Beans is to blame. Hes a great dev. However, sometimes issues arise that are no ones fault. Just weigh your decision to flash that stuff against any need for prepaid carriers.
