I have a quick question. When switching ROMs should I also in addition to factory reset, also perform a system/wipe to wipe the already installed custom ROM? Thanks.
It is generally unnecessary, but not a bad idea to do so. Most devs have their updater script format /system, but you'll find the occasional one that omits that one line.

I think it's better to wipe the system. As I've faced many kind of froblem because of a dirty flash. And I've seen many bug reports on several ROM thread and it just came out that it's not the ROM but the dirty flash is causing the problem. It will probably take 1-2hr to get back to the previous position so what's the big didfference??

OK. So when switching ROMs I should perform factory restore, wipe all caches, as well as system/wipe to erase the ROM currently installed. I have done it that way before but I always get nervous when I wipe system, cause now it has no ROM installed at all and I don't want anything to happen in that case. But thanks for the quick reply

What could happen?? Hardbrick?? A little chance..... Here's what I think when I do something risky. Just Think like I don't have any device if I can get this device back it's bonus for me.
You can always flash a rom whatever it has one or not untill your device can be booted into fastboot. So don't be afraid if something bad(!?) happens and you can boot into fastboot mode. Once I even had no boot just the fastboot it took less than 5 min to get a system on it.
And dirty flash is always an option. I myself had and seen many people having problems with it.

yeah ive used odin a bunch to flash eugenes roms and stock rom if i get a soft brick. But weird thing is it doesnt wipe my internal sd. BTW this ISNT like a serious issue and i NEED to erase everything...but ive flashed so many roms over each other i thought it would be good to give my phone a breath of fresh air. haha
okay so just about an hour ago i was trying to install the 2825 radio. i flashed it onto the phone in recovery mode and now my phone wont go past the boot screen. (tmobile g1) i can still get to recovery and fastboot and all of that but even when i tried to restore it, it still wont go past the boot screen!!!!! what did i do wrong, and is there any hope for me?? please help!

Hopefully you will not accomplish your objective. "Everything" includes the Primary Boot Loader, in which case your phone will be permanently bricked, for all intents and purposes.
You will not be able to access the phone by any means other than an expensive tester after you delete USB drivers from the phone.
To erase everything...you need to go settings.phone & sdcard.umount...under phone storage.format....it will mount back on its own

you'll lose everything on the rom including apps that the dev added. only thing you wont lose is stock apps, but no it shouldnt matter what rom your running.

I have seen people say before that you should wipe partitions a few times to ensure they are clean, so I made this zip for myself to make things quick and easy. This zip wipes boot, system, data and cache 5 times each. Whether there is truly a benefit to this I don't really know but I would rather just use it anyway as it is extremely quick.

yes it wipes everything. It's suited for a fresh clean rom install. If you flash this zip you must flash your new rom or your phone won't boot.

I am a noob to flashing rom's, I am running paranoidandroid 1.99. I followed the guide wiped everything (once) and installed Zip and Gapps,
I am running Matr1x Kernal on ONDEMAND, But i am lucky to get 4 hours out of the battery with normal useage and today alone it has restarted and rebooted several times.
Gonna try this wipe zip and hope that solves my problems.

As the title says... i just formated my ****ing whole system
wanted to change roms and used this crazy complete cleanup script
didnt know that it would format EVERYTHING
so now im standing here with a phone with only a twrp recovery... no system no backups ... nothing
i somehow need to push a rom to my device and install it
problem is im totally blank when it comes to these adb shell things
could someone give me an advice how to get a file to my phone?

So, assuming you can mount to your computer, download a ROM. Try the chemistry ROM? Or the stock rooted one. Whichever. Got to recovery, find the ROM and install it.
This is assuming you can mount with twrp. (Its in mounts)

If it won't mount, use adb to push the zip(s) to your internal storage.

Don't use a wipe script next time...

Next time, do a factory reset and wipe system. That'll do you and keep you from having those little issues that are caused by doing dirty flashes. Sometimes they work just fine. Others, they give you hell. It's one thing if you're upgrading between builds of the same ROM. Even then, though, it's a risk.

That's like saying never ever drive because if you steer into a pole, it's bad. Don't steer into things and it's fine. If the OP learns to correctly wipe, this won't be an issue ever again.

I wipe cache, dalvik, factory reset, then wipe system every time I change Roms. I've done this for years on every android I've had and never had a problem. Don't wipe internal storage though.

On what? If I wipe data on TWRP I lose everything on SD. Wiping system wipes the system partition. There are many reasons I don't use CWM, poor backup locations and inefficient menu layouts are among them. If wiping system wipes the SD, I'll add that to the list.
TWRP all the way! Way better than CWM in my opinion.

Agreed. I would sacrifice an infant to get 4EXT Recovery Touch on thus baby. It has a "Format all partitions (except SD card)" option that is amazeballs.
ive done this before. to fix it you need to download the stock google nexus 4 image. google has taken it down from its webste but there are people here in the forums who have uploaded it to help and have other people download it.
now download and install the nexus 4 root tool kit
to fix your phone your are going to put your phone into fastboot mode and connect it to your pc.
then open up the nexus 4 root tool kit program.
next find the google nexus 4 toolkit folder and go into it. (mine saved in my local disk C)
go into the "put google factory image here" folder and drop the google factory image in there.
once thats done go back into the nexus 4 root toolkit program and press number 9 (download, Extract + flash Facotry image"
since you already downloaded it and put it in the factory image folder you're going to click option number 2 (flash google image)
then type yes and let it do its thing
make sure that the factory image that you download is in a .tgz or .tar file or else it wont work

Okay, so I was listening to a YouTube video via Popup Browser BETA. When the song finished, I tried closing the window, but it wouldn't let me interact with the window. Not sure why. I just figured since the app was in beta it was just confused, so I went to the settings->running applications->I force closed the app. But for some reason, the little window still wouldn't go away. So I decided to reboot my device. Bad idea, apparently...
Now whenever I boot up my phone it'll vibrate, display the Google logo for a few seconds, and then... it goes to a blank black screen. Not a clue why. I've tried:
- Leaving it to charge and rebooting
- Leaving it in the blank black screen
- Booting into recovery, then trying to reboot the device from there
- Clearing cache partition
Nothing works. I still can't boot up my phone again.
I'm running Slimbean 4.2.1 (not the latest version). There really isn't anything that might have triggered this. I can still charge my phone (the charging animation still occurs) and I can still go into CWM Recovery. I'd really rather not have to install a new ROM or anything... but if I have to, is there a way to extract the data I have on my phone now while in recovery or something?
Any suggestions?
EDIT: This has been FIXED. Moderators, if you see this, you can close this thread. If anyone else has this problem, try reflashing your current version of your ROM, that's how I fixed mine. I'm not responsible for damage to your device.
Why haven't you tried reflashing your rom without wiping data?

I could try that.. but isn't there a chance it'll corrupt the data for certain apps or no? I'd just really rather not loose all of that.

It's not going to hurt anything. Make a CWM backup of your data if you want.

No way of corrupting your data, as long as you don't select to wipe data partition or data is already corrupted. But this is strange that your phone gone crazy like this. Try to reflash your rom without wiping data and see if your phone will boot up

I've not got enough free space on my phone I don't think (it's only 16GB, I got about 2GB free).
Unless I'm mistaken the backup will take more than that, yes? Considering I've got a few games apps that probably equate to about 4GB.

Reflash the same version you were running before this accident, as the newest version requires clean flash. If you want to run the latest version and have your data back, reflash the same version you were running before, then backup your data, wipe phone, flash the latest version and restore your data

WOO! Thanks a lot! Booted up perfectly, and no loss of data or anything like that. Only odd things is it seems to have changed my DPI... but I can change that easily so it's not really a bother. It also made me have to update the Virus Definitions on Avast!, not sure why either.

Yes either that or perhaps switch to a new one, I've been with semi-stock Android for quite a while now I'm really liking the port of MIUI V5...
After flashing MIUI on my N4 and going back to a nandroid of a previous AOKP rom, I am getting a "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped" message over and over. Also, I noticed that after going to another rom (either nandroid or clean flash), there are some files left from the previous rom (e.g., flashed Carbon then went back to nandroid of AOKP and had a PIE remnant, which I know is not present on AOKP). I'm figuring this has something to do with things not getting completely wiped (all this is after complete wipe in TWRP between flashes).
Anyone have any advice on how to get a complete wipe between flashes?

I did all those. Although, if I remember correctly, there's no option to wipe system in TWRP. Not sure. But I did wipe everything I could in TWRP recovery.

This happens if you have it set for your apps and settings to be restored by Google. I never advice this

After this flash ROM, then skip set up wizard and go to settings > backup and reset and do a factory reset from there. It will reboot. Then everything from the other ROM should be gone.

Doing that after a rom flash can cause issues. That is why I always suggest to doing a full and proper wipe before flashing. Though it does seem that MIUI for some reason doesn't always properly remove files when this is done.

What? A factory reset clears out user data and restores the ROM back to the way it is after a fresh install. It doesn't touch the system partition.
You do know that titanium can restore app data from a nandroid, right?

I never thought about the rom being left intact after a factory reset because I only do a full wipe when flashing a whole new rom (I've never wiped after flashing a new rom, only before). And yeah, I use Titanium Backup.

Google's built in backup can do that. Many custom ROM's custom settings can be restored as well if there are provisions in the ROM that allow that data to be backed up to the Google servers. Many of the custom settings I use on CM are restored by this mechanism in the rare event of a wipe. With "App Data" being able to be synced with Google's servers we'll see much more of this as well; I think it's great.
These are "non-essential" settings that won't/shouldn't affect stability, etc...
