Cant get ROM's flashed... I've been demoted to a noob... =/

So I rooted and switched ROM's many times on my MT3g, and now that i'm trying it on my MT4g, I'm having hella trouble.
So I got to S=off and its perarooted now, with ClockworkMod Recovery image: 3.0.2.4. I tried to update the Kernel to KB-Kernel-2.4.8-108-CFS-SV... put my phone with the stock ROM into a boot loop, so i restored it. Tried to update the Kernel then immediately install CM-7.0.0... again put it into a boot loop, and had to restore. What am i missing here? Should be partitioning like with my MT3g? Should i be wiping? Is there something else I should be installing?

That's your problem. You can't flash a kernel before the ROM, because the ROM's standard kernel immediately overwrites it. Try wiping all 3 items in the recovery menu, flash CM7, and then let it boot. Once CM7 is stable, try flashing your kernel. Just make sure it is compatible.

It will work.
1. Flash Rom
2. Wait 5 mins so everything loads
3. Reboot into recovery
4. Wipe cache then in advanced...wipe davlik cache
5. Select zip from sd card and flash new kernel
Follow this and you will be good to go everytime! Happy flashing!

But I did mention wiping, and that was my main thought as to why it's not booting.

Wipe factory data
Wipe catche
Then go into advanced wipe dalvik
Should take 30 secs max to wipe, 5 mins max to install and reboot
Then flash your Rom and reboot. Once its rebooted then try flashing the kernel. There is no reason that won't work assuming you do have s-off

If what Mark said doesn't work, I'd look to a corrupt recovery image, or more likely a bad download or SD card.

Aww... I'd be hella sad if I had a bad sdcard. My problem was that I wasn't wiping the correct things, but now thanks to you great people I finally can flash again! Thanks!

Glad you got it working. If Mark or I have helped you, maybe you could hit the thanks button.

Make sure when you do a kernel you wipe cache and than davlvik and than flash the first time kernel and than repeat the process and than flash your desired kernel.

Possible Fix For 4.1.2 Battery Drain

Hi guys
I came across this thread by "galchristian" in the Verizon SIII subsection, and thought I would share it here in the hope it might help someone. I myself haven't tried it yet as I'm at work, but I will be later on or tomorrow. According to the OP though, this seems to sort out battery drain issues for Jelly Bean.

"For all of you who have a JellyBean ROM already installed and have the battery drain skip to Step.8
1. Download your JellyBean ROM of choice
2. Place on SD card
3. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP of your current ROM
4. Wipe data, cache and dalvik cache
5. Select ROM of choice from the SD card (Most ROM's these days come with an Aroma-Installer so remember what you picked to be installed and what not.)
6. Boot device
7. Set up the phone and let it restore all apps. Set everything you will use (facebook, e-mail, flipboard etc) -then ReBoot
8. I used TitaniumBackup and removed "Media Storage" and I also removed "Downloads 4.1.1"
9. ReBoot into Recovery & wipe cache and dalvik cache
10.Dirty-Flash your ROM of choice which you chose @ Step.5 and chose the same features if possible.
11.Install your prefered Kernel optional (I personally chose Ktoosez 3.0.49 just because it gave me good battery life)
12.Wipe cache and dalvik the last time and also fix permissions.
13.ReBoot the last time and enjoy!"
Please share your thoughts and feedback as I'm sure a lot of us are very peed off with losing 20% battery overnight.

My first question will be, how can I convert a .tar ROM to a suitable format to be flashed via my SD rather than through Odin? Unless, of course, flashing a ROM via odin without wiping first is exactly the same as flashing a "dirty" ROM via recovery?

Thanks to OP. But this guide is something like how to drive your Ferrari on 6th gear without mentioning how to start it! What is 'dirty flash'? How will you flash the ROM, Mobile Odin or PC Odin or what? Also not everyone knows what Aroma installer is.
Besides, I don't think even after doing this battery life could improve. Imo, if 4.1.2 had good backup then it'll be just present there normally, like 4.1.1.

Dirty flash is flashing the rom over your current one without wiping first.
From what I deduced I assumed the OP is saying to flash via your SD card and not via odin. Also that aroma is not necessary, but if you use it then to keep all settings the same.
If any newbies have any question we'll try and help them, but I don't think it terribly overcomplicated for most people on this site.
I am not sure whether this works as I haven't yet tried it, but the OP certainly seems to think it does.

Well for an upgrade there is basically no meaning doing a wipe, but if you want to make sure and wanna do a wipe anyway, then you should do it after flashing the ROM, not before.

So what consequences will removing media storage and downloads have?

Guys first thing first about battery draining is your mobile network not configure properly.. just realize it after I install configuration message from provider.. I drain 1% all over night.. and get 2day standby battery with medium usage.. 10 hours screen.. and leaving the phone with charging all night is weaken your battery.. first time I forget to unplug and everything change.. battery drain 5% after sleep 6hours..and only last for 1 day with medium usage.. 6hours on screen now I dont know how to make it back like it was.. using note for 3weeks anyone knows how to increase batt life without changing rom or kernel ?? Im still runing stock 4.1.1

[Help] Just formated everything

As the title says... i just formated my ****ing whole system
wanted to change roms and used this crazy complete cleanup script
didnt know that it would format EVERYTHING
so now im standing here with a phone with only a twrp recovery... no system no backups ... nothing
i somehow need to push a rom to my device and install it
problem is im totally blank when it comes to these adb shell things
could someone give me an advice how to get a file to my phone?

So, assuming you can mount to your computer, download a ROM. Try the chemistry ROM? Or the stock rooted one. Whichever. Got to recovery, find the ROM and install it.
This is assuming you can mount with twrp. (Its in mounts)

If it won't mount, use adb to push the zip(s) to your internal storage.

it does not mount... and i somehow cant get adb to work

Don't use a wipe script next time...
Even better, don't wipe at all. Just do a proper backup and dirtyflash.

Wow. Worst advice ever.
Next time, do a factory reset and wipe system. That'll do you and keep you from having those little issues that are caused by doing dirty flashes. Sometimes they work just fine. Others, they give you hell. It's one thing if you're upgrading between builds of the same ROM. Even then, though, it's a risk.

That's like saying never ever drive because if you steer into a pole, it's bad. Don't steer into things and it's fine. If the OP learns to correctly wipe, this won't be an issue ever again.

Factory Reset/Cache/Dalvik -> Flash ROM.

I wipe cache, dalvik, factory reset, then wipe system every time I change Roms. I've done this for years on every android I've had and never had a problem. Don't wipe internal storage though.

On what? If I wipe data on TWRP I lose everything on SD. Wiping system wipes the system partition. There are many reasons I don't use CWM, poor backup locations and inefficient menu layouts are among them. If wiping system wipes the SD, I'll add that to the list.

TWRP all the way! Way better than CWM in my opinion.

Agreed. I would sacrifice an infant to get 4EXT Recovery Touch on thus baby. It has a "Format all partitions (except SD card)" option that is amazeballs.

ive done this before. to fix it you need to download the stock google nexus 4 image. google has taken it down from its webste but there are people here in the forums who have uploaded it to help and have other people download it.
now download and install the nexus 4 root tool kit
to fix your phone your are going to put your phone into fastboot mode and connect it to your pc.
then open up the nexus 4 root tool kit program.
next find the google nexus 4 toolkit folder and go into it. (mine saved in my local disk C)
go into the "put google factory image here" folder and drop the google factory image in there.
once thats done go back into the nexus 4 root toolkit program and press number 9 (download, Extract + flash Facotry image"
since you already downloaded it and put it in the factory image folder you're going to click option number 2 (flash google image)
then type yes and let it do its thing
make sure that the factory image that you download is in a .tgz or .tar file or else it wont work

[Q] Switching ROMs

I have a quick question. When switching ROMs should I also in addition to factory reset, also perform a system/wipe to wipe the already installed custom ROM? Thanks.

It is generally unnecessary, but not a bad idea to do so. Most devs have their updater script format /system, but you'll find the occasional one that omits that one line.

I think it's better to wipe the system. As I've faced many kind of froblem because of a dirty flash. And I've seen many bug reports on several ROM thread and it just came out that it's not the ROM but the dirty flash is causing the problem. It will probably take 1-2hr to get back to the previous position so what's the big didfference??

OK. So when switching ROMs I should perform factory restore, wipe all caches, as well as system/wipe to erase the ROM currently installed. I have done it that way before but I always get nervous when I wipe system, cause now it has no ROM installed at all and I don't want anything to happen in that case. But thanks for the quick reply

What could happen?? Hardbrick?? A little chance..... Here's what I think when I do something risky. Just Think like I don't have any device if I can get this device back it's bonus for me.
You can always flash a rom whatever it has one or not untill your device can be booted into fastboot. So don't be afraid if something bad(!?) happens and you can boot into fastboot mode. Once I even had no boot just the fastboot it took less than 5 min to get a system on it.
And dirty flash is always an option. I myself had and seen many people having problems with it.

How to start fresh after trying lot of roms?

I tried so many roms and kernels and i have found my best pair which are psx rom v6 and franco kernel r183. But i think my internal storage is a mess.
I know the procedure to start clean but i just want to make sure before i **** things up.
I want to wipe the internal storage in my phone, is this the correct way?
1. Boot into recovery.
2. Wipe everything including internal storage.
3. In twrp there is an option to wipe usb otg, is it needed?
4. Sideload or push rom zip, gapps, kernel and superSU 1.65 zip files.
5. Reboot again in recovery and start the procedure.

Yep, looks like everything is right. One thing though: you don't need to flash the supersu zip if the ROM is already rooted. (And the majority of custom ROMs are rooted)

Yes it stays rooted if you dont flash other custom kernel, but if you do, sometimes it breaks root and even twrp asking you to swipe to install root. At least it happened when i flash matr1x or even franco.

Agree with your first post, should be no problem. Although in TWRP there is a big button that said Format DATA, that does a complete wipe including the internal storage, so you don't have to manually select each partition.
Also give Neo kernel a try.

I'll try neo first before doing this clean fresh system, but i dont think there is any other kernel that will make me jump ship. Performance and battery life is really balanced with franco's r183 nightly now.

I think im sticking with franco, because neo gave me antutu result 20917 while franco gave me 21450.
Numbers not important but in opengl 2.0 test in antutu, neo gave me lower fps and i can see choppines while franco's is smooth. For real world usage, i feel tapatalk app is stuttering when swiping right to open the left bar while it's really smooth in franco. Thanks though.
