Cant get ROM's flashed... I've been demoted to a noob... =/ - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I rooted and switched ROM's many times on my MT3g, and now that i'm trying it on my MT4g, I'm having hella trouble.
So I got to S=off and its perarooted now, with ClockworkMod Recovery image: 3.0.2.4. I tried to update the Kernel to KB-Kernel-2.4.8-108-CFS-SV... put my phone with the stock ROM into a boot loop, so i restored it. Tried to update the Kernel then immediately install CM-7.0.0... again put it into a boot loop, and had to restore. What am i missing here? Should be partitioning like with my MT3g? Should i be wiping? Is there something else I should be installing?

That's your problem. You can't flash a kernel before the ROM, because the ROM's standard kernel immediately overwrites it. Try wiping all 3 items in the recovery menu, flash CM7, and then let it boot. Once CM7 is stable, try flashing your kernel. Just make sure it is compatible.

Sweet, thanks. Hopefully it works.

It will work.
1. Flash Rom
2. Wait 5 mins so everything loads
3. Reboot into recovery
4. Wipe cache then in advanced...wipe davlik cache
5. Select zip from sd card and flash new kernel
Follow this and you will be good to go everytime! Happy flashing!

Wipe factory data
Wipe catche
Then go into advanced wipe dalvik
Should take 30 secs max to wipe, 5 mins max to install and reboot
Then flash your Rom and reboot. Once its rebooted then try flashing the kernel. There is no reason that won't work assuming you do have s-off

If what Mark said doesn't work, I'd look to a corrupt recovery image, or more likely a bad download or SD card.

Aww... I'd be hella sad if I had a bad sdcard. My problem was that I wasn't wiping the correct things, but now thanks to you great people I finally can flash again! Thanks!

Glad you got it working. If Mark or I have helped you, maybe you could hit the thanks button.

Make sure when you do a kernel you wipe cache and than davlvik and than flash the first time kernel and than repeat the process and than flash your desired kernel.

No recovery

I permrooted, and flashed cwm3.0.0.5 and flashed cm 7 build 23 on my glacier. It didn't work and would not boot post the animation, the animation kept looping. So I flashed the stock system since it would not restore my backups and did a factory reset. Now I have no recovery. I rerooted up to the s-on part (can't find the root file for s-off) installed rom manager and that says I successfully flashed a new recovery. I tried this with earlier versions of clockwork and each time I'm greeted with a black screen, and red triangle/exclamation point. How do I get my recovery back?

It isn't possible to install clockwork recovery unless you are s=off, so you will need to do that before you can get cw to install.

You can search for anyone of the "how to root" threads in the development section.
But to answer your question.... here is the link.

[Q] new to the forums

hey guys, Im new to the forums. I have an HTC Desire HD on Telus, joined to ask some genreal questions about rooting, Cyanogen Mod 7, etc.
Anyway, I recently got Cyanogenmod on my phone, and installed the Telus kernel thing at the end (following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954997). Anyway, the guide wasnt perfect here:
"2- Copy Telus Kernel.zip to your SD card from the "Step 2 - Telus Kernel" folder.
3- Run Kernel Update Utility (in the "Step 3 - Kernel Update Utility" folder) and click "Select a cwm zip", then click next, then click Go to fastboot, wait for the white bootloader screen on your phone, then click Flash. Once it's done, it'll reboot back into Android."
I wasn't sure what to select as a cwm.zip...so I chose the telus kernel zip in the "Step 2 - Telus Kernel" Folder. everything went fine until boot up. It just hung at the HTC turn on screen...and I couldnt even get into reboot recovery. Sent it in and now I have a new one...Still want CyanogenMod. Just dont wanna screw it up a second time. Thanks for any help
~Stu
What you should of done is hold vol- and power button and that would of took you to recovery.
Anyways, from personal experience i've flashed different kernel to try out a number of times, my advice is to copy the kernel into your sd card and boot into recovery and flash the kernel as you would flash a rom..
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
hey, ya I tried the down volume plus power, it did nothing. anyway, maybe Ill try it that way. boot into recovery and flash it from there. The Telus kernel is so that I can hear out of the earspeaker correct?
That's right.. Boot into recovery and flash the kernel. The utility is just an automation of that process as far as I understand.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
So why did my phone brick then? And can you tell me the process once in reboot recovery? Like what I should do before actually installing it? Such as wipe the cache, etc.

Technically if you phone booted into the boot screen , it wasn't bricked. whatever that was flashed caused a boot loop.
1. Hold Vol- and power button, wait for it to boot and release the keys.
2. select the option install zip from sdcard
3. Find the kernal and select it.
4. Once flashed select reboot system now.
All done
So that is for the ear speaker then?

What's it for then? Why would I have to put it on after I get cyanogen mod? When I had it on my last phone (before it got fixed) just the phone feature didn't work...texting worked though...i don't understand what it is meant for...i know it's a total noob question, but I have to ask lol

From your initial post
I wasn't sure what to select as a cwm.zip...so I chose the telus kernel zip

you flashed a kernel to your recovery partition, which will have at least stopped it rebooting into recovery, what you should have done is returned to fastboot and flashed clockwork recovery and all would have been working.
Oh...so I should just do the whole thing from sd on the card in reboot recovery?

Turn on wifi, download the version of SRF1.2 you want and any fixes you want to use. Boot into CWM 3.1.0.1 purple and (for best results) wipe factory 3x, wipe data cache 3x, wipe dalvik cache in advanced menu 3x. choose install from sd>choose zip from card>srf1.2. watch the magic happen. reboot. flash enable journaling to avoid problems, if you'd like.

The how to root vid shows how to root ur phone with CWM 2.5.1. Then you download the SFR 1.2, CWM purple, and what ever kernel onto ur sd card and flash them from ur CWM 2.5.1. Took me about 15mins to do all steps. Minus download times.

Help Please ='(

Hi Guys i was trying to install a rom but i got an error like this one on the wipe data factory it says Skipping format of /sd-ext.
and when i go to the restore part to flash a nandroid to restore my phone it says something like this after restoring cache i get this
sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext.
What can i do guys?? my phone its not working at all, i just got this yesterday =S
please help!!
What did you do exactly?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Umm, unless you have an A2SD partition on your SD card, recovery won't see it and therefore there is nothing to wipe.
Most problems can be fixed by flashing the PD15IMG.ZIP found in the downgrade tutorial, but that may not be necessary.
More details will help us to help you.

ok the last rom i used was InsomMIUI but i wanted to flash another rom, when i get to the CWM i was doing everything normal you know, wipe data/factory reset,
wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions, when i do the wipe data/factory reste i get this--> Skipping format of /sd-ext
and when im trying to do a restore with a nandroid i get the same thing
so i went to the mounts and storage and if im not wrong it have to be UMMU but the mount /sd-ext part doesnt let me change it to unmount i dont know if that's the problem cause the error that im getting its related to the /sd-ext
This is normal and expected. Ignore this. It's not an error.
Dude this is normal... Mine says this all the time.
