Gallery app - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I set all images to be stored in external card and I can see there are about 17gb images data in external drive. However when I check the usage of gallery app why it is taking 4gb space from the internal storage? I only have very few images in internal which are mainly from apps such WhatsApp or other default video, and those are not more than 100mb in total.
Anyone else having the same issue?
Does the gallery app size grow as well (eg. For thumbnail purpose perhaps?) if the more I put images in external card?

then there has to be some thing related to gallery like image etc which is still at the phone memory and u are not aware
Connect the phone to the pc and check all folders which are there in phone memory u ll see some thing if its there
The last option will be reset which u can decide to do or not :good:

No nothing that I can find so far. I decided to try clicking 'clear data' and now reduced to 320mb. I assume that is for the thumbnail. Although that was showing 4gb before I didn't get about 4gb back on the available space now. This is weird, It is more or less I'm getting the similar available space as before.

Less space available than there should be.

I'm having a problem where my device thinks there is only 3.7GB available when actually there should be somewhere around 8 or 9GB free,

Sorry can't help you but I just noticed this today too.
I did had a large video on here but deleted it , seems it hasn't freed up the space...
Have you looked for a folder called "LOST.DIR" ? if you have one, delete it and then see remaining space.
also try sd maid

SD Maid is a really cool app, thanks for recommending that. It got me back about 1GB but still seems I have a lot of space lost in the ether :crying:
I wonder if the storage graph counts app data that is downloaded seperately like games that download an additional 500MB or some such to the SD? I have at least 4 games on my device that did that which could account for some of the missing data if that is the case.
I'm missing space as well, but using DiskUsage showed a lot more detail of my memory usage.
I think the storage display is being a little too simplistic.

Disk Usage is a great app too! it did show me where most of my data has gone. I have 2GB in comics on my device I totally forgot and the rest of the data is "Android data" such as all the additional game data like I suspected.
I appreciate all the app suggestions and help guys. I feel much better now knowing what all is using up my space. (wish there was a 32GB version of the N7 but oh well)
Hold the power button till it shuts down, once it restarts the memory should be back as available. At least it was on mine.

Factory reset with Nexus 7 toolkit. I did the factory image thing and it fixed it up.

One of the thumbnail files in /DCIM/.thumbnails/ was 1.27GB in size. This is a file that doesn't show up for some reason on that DiskUsage app by the way (even with root), so that's worth checking out with a file explorer.
I deleted mine and put a .nomedia file in my movies, wallpaper and DCIM folders, hoping it'll stop making thumbnails.
Thanks!

This freed up most of the space that was reported in DiskUsage as "System Data" but I still have almost 1Gb used and can't see what's using it. Anyone know of an app that breaks down System data usage?
Bit of a pain having to reboot the device each time I want to free up system data...

Galaxy S4-I9505-Half of the photos i took appear corrupted

Half of the photos i took appear corrupted and display the same photo whereas in the preview, they display the correct photo. Is there any way to fix it?
Here are some examples, the preview and the photo displayed is different, and the 3 photos are the same:

Now this is rather strange, what kind of a memory card are you using and are you using the stock firmware?
Yes I've had this too. It is rather weired issue. I think it might be thumb nails issue. If you delete thumbnails I'm pretty sure it fixed it.

How do you delete thumbnails? Not quite sure how to do it.
Tried to find a thumbnail file/folder, can't find it though.
open 'My Files' app, click menu, then settings, then tick 'show hidden files', then back, then 'All Files', 'Device Storage', then 'DCIM' and delete the folder named '.thumbnails'

Nope still does not work Deleted thumbnails file, cache and data and rebooted phone. Still shows the same corrupted pictures.
damn, can you try a factory reset, do you have a lot of data on it?

[Q] Massive Contacts Storage app size

I have a Verizon G2, regular root method and stock rom. Under application manager, under All apps, the largest app is Contacts Storage at 4GB. What's taking up so much space??
Edit: I don't have the Facebook app, and I use the stock messaging app, contacts whatever. Also I have two google accounts tied to the phone but only syncs with one. Anyone have any idea why it takes up 4GB? (shows as data in app)
Anyone have the faintest idea? I can post a screenshot if that would help. I only have around 200 contacts synced to my google account.
You cab try and see if diskusage from the store gives you a more detailed view on what this is.
Thanks for the reply. I installed diskusage but when I expand contacts, all I see is a 4096mb data file. I imported all of my old text messages using SMSbackup, could that be what's taking up 4GB?

The bible is about 4MB big. As long as you don't have messages worth a thousand bibles that can't be the reason. You could try to backup all the contacts that aren't on Google to your sim and then clear data for the contract storage in settings-apps-all-contact storage. But i don't guarantee that you won't miss any contacts. Maybe back it up with titanium too begotten clearing data?
I'll do both before I wipe the data and I'll post what happens after. Thanks!!
So I backed up Contacts Storage with Titanium Backup and Super Backup. Then I cleared Contacts data in Application Manager (it warned me that it would delete data, accounts, and some other things). I lost all my contacts but a minute later they all appeared again from my phone syncing my google account. Now Contacts Storage app says 1.71MB! I wonder what took up all that space though. I don't seem to have lost anything else but maybe I'll find something later as I keep using my phone.

Contact photos maybe? Still a ton of storage for only 200 contacts even with high res photos.
Definitely not contact photos. I only have photos for like 10 contacts and they are blurry as heck, haha. Been poking around on my phone for a day now and I still haven't found anything missing after clearing the 4GB of contacts storage.

IndexService files using up all my internal storage

Is anyone else getting this issue?
Recently, my phone has been telling me that my internal storage space is running out. I have hardly anything stored in my internal storage.
I used an app called DiskUsage to find out what was using up the space and I discovered a load of files in the folder called .MyFilesContentSearch. There are several files with the extension .prx that can be up to 3GB each, and some .frq files that can be up to 1GB each. There are also several cfs files measuring just over 400MB each. What on earth is this app doing?
The full path to this folder is /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.samsung.indexservice/files/.MyFilesContentSearch

I know there have been threads complaining about CPU usage, overheating and battery drain related to IndexService, all of which I experience whenever IndexService is running, but I haven't seen anyone else mention this specific issue of excess storage space being taken up.
I did try resetting my phone and reformatting my 32gb storage card, but the problem won't go away. Even if I take out my SD card, the folder fills up.
I have seen claims that this has to do with a corrupt pdf file, but I'm not convinced. I deleted all the pdf files that I could find on my device, but the problem remains.
I have found that I can delete the files without any problems, but the folder will just fill up again after a day or two. It's not the end of the world, as I have a spare battery and can close down IndexService and delete the files, but it's an annoyance to have to do this so often.
I know there are things I can do to solve this if I root my phone, but I am not willing to do that just yet, so please don't offer suggestions that require rooting. I intend to send a bug report to Samsung, but before I do that I would like to know if anyone else has this specific issue.
My phone is a UK n9005 from Three and the ROM is XXUDMJ6.
Has this affected anyone here? If so, does anyone know if it gets fixed in later ROM editions?

You might have a file on your phone that crashes the Samsung indexer service.
Get Android assistant or even without it, force close applications you downloaded around the time the problem came out and just see when the problem goes away, since I also think it's something interacting with indexer. Come to think of it why not wipe cache first and if not fixed, factory reset? If factory reset doesn't work I would send it back for repair.

Why not just try deleting apps you don't use, clearing cache, and or moving pics and videos to SD card?

This has been covered many times for anyone who searches. For those that don't: Tap Internal Storage. Then on the next screen you'll see the word MORE in the upper right corner of your screen. Tapping that will present you with a menu item that says Migrate Data. Tap that and follow any instructions.

Did you go into your Internal Storage? Did it bring you to a different screen? I am referring to your screen shots above. Get to that screen and then follow my instructions. I'm also assuming that you followed the instructions in the video and you now have your extSD set up as adoptable storage.
