Looking at the Anandtech review, I saw them mention that the Optimus has a Micro SD slot, in addition to the 16GB on board.
Is this correct?
No ti doesn't. It is a rule from Microsoft that all new Windows Phone 7 MUST have a built in memory.

Yes, but a SD card is a built in memory! All HTC WinPhone 7 devices have "just" SD cards as additional internal memory, it's cheaper thand NANDs!
On engadget.com or pocketnow.com you can watch some videos about this. One user plugged a 32gb sd card in his HD7!!!
But I don't know if the Optimus 7 has a sd card or a NAND...

As the other guy said, false, look at the focus!
Seeing as the focus isn't being released outside the USA, the optimus is the best bet.
Anyway, the device is out, somebody must be able to confirm.
Actually the Focus is now available on Rogers in Canada as well...
And Samsung is quite generous when you describe your needs to them on their Direct phone line, and they provided me with an unlock code...

Yeah, this would be pretty important to me too, since its the only device with internal memory + microSD. If its easy to access this would be a very interesting phone since I need at least my 32GB of storage, better would be more.

I have this phone, the SD slot isn't presente becuase it's a Microsoft dictat for ALL Windows Phone 7 cellphones!!!!!

Where did you hear it had 4GB NAND and 8GB in the SDcard slot? I believe you, I'm just curious. I am pretty sure all WP7 "have" to have an SDcard slot because the SD Card Association said WP7s support SD cards across the board (just not necessarily consumer accessible). Like I said, someone needs to tear this guy down.

Sorry to disappoint guys, I do not possess screwdrivers small enough to open this thing up. I have a set of electronics screwdrivers going all the way down to Phillips Head PH000 but it would need to be at least a PH0000 to open those small little screws. Love the device though! I will pick up a proper screwdriver, but I don't even know where to go about looking for one in Canada.

I have bad news...I took the phone apart completely, all the way down to its component elements and there is no SD slot or card. The 16 GB is NAND and soldered to the board. I will post pictures I took in a different thread for teardown purposes.
I am picking up a 16GB A500 from Staples today (only $300 w/the coupon, woot!), and would like to upgrade the internal memory to 32GB. I'm certain that the memory is soldered to the board, but am curious if the existing memory requires replacement or if there is an empty location for another 16GB memory chip.
Has anyone tried this, and/or are there any photos of a torn-down A500? TIA for any inputs.
There is no vacant slot for another flash chip. There are plenty of pics of the internals, and even some teardown videos if you care to google.
This like most all imbedded devices is what you have is what you get monotonous mentioned to be updated. So that software major ones willbforce youbto buy a new tablet sooner its the price we paybto have the next best thing
I recommend just putting in a 16GB or even 32GB microsd. They are a little weird the way you access them though. To save you some digging:
Your 16GB internal storage will come up under /sdcard/ while the external card is /mnt/external_sd (or something like that).
So if there isn't an open location on the board, that would require removing the current 16 GB chip and replacing it with a 32GB chip. No big deal.
I've already got a 16GB microSD, but some programs are stubborn about not moving to micro SD. This tab is a replacement for my gTab, I'll be rooting it soon and am not scared of internal upgrades.

I think you're confused...
There is 16GB internal AND you can ADD a 16GB memory card which gives you 32GB total. That is not 32GB internal, per se, even though it's all contained within the device physically.
Changing from 16GB to 32GB would require physically tearing apart the A500 then putting in the 32GB chip, which is an on board chip, not a simple micro-SD card.
You could also just add a 32GB micro-SD card and end up with 48GB total.

To answer your question from what I have seen you are correct you would have to de-solder and remove the 16gb chip and solder the 32 in its place . you are either very brave or have some good experience lol

I see that in the post as well, but I mean if someone really understands the impact of that then they probably wouldn't be on this forum asking questions about it. They would know that there's not an open slot... maybe that's a bad assumption on my part.
Just seems that the knowledge/skills necessary with replacing the onboard memory did not match the question being asked...
I'm aware that the memory upgrade involves teardown of the unit, and is not a simple plug-in like an SD card. My main curiosity was if it would require simple soldering of an additional chip, or removal and replacement of the existing one. Many boards (mobos, latops, tablets) have upgrade locations on the board layout, and only populate them based on what options are ordered. On my gTablet, the layout was on the board to accomodate a GPS circuit that was never populated. Some enterprising folks here on XDA figured out the components and code required to get it functional.
If it is a remove and replace upgrade, it can definitely be more challenging. As wolfman mentioned, the ROM is in the current chip. Hmmm, more research before jumping off this bridge ....

ThatGeekGuy, did you go thought with changing out your internal memory? I've been doing alot of research on how to crack the tablet open, swapping out the internal memory chip and adding a SIM card reader.

Mine has a 128gb with the pro.XE700T1C-A01US. just updated the OS to Win8 Pro via my technet key. I was surprised that it had standard win8 installed. also installed the Media center aid on.
Loving this Unit so Much.... Ebay has my Asus infinity now.. ... I could go on and on about it.. but I won't. To answer your question I did see a link from someone that opened it up. I will try and locate it. I was wondering the same thing and would like to put a 256 micro ssd.. think that is what you will need. Don't forget to remove all the bloatware from Samsung.. runs very fast now.

It's the ATIV Smart PC Pro (which is a tablet) and it came with a 64Gb SSD. Long term, SD card or external HD are not the answer as I need a bigger system drive. I've found the link on opening the unit now:

How have you gotten on with the upgrade?
To those of us who like to store hundreds and hundreds of full album MP3's encoded at FLAC would love to have more phone storage.
With the NOTE being such a large phone, I sure hope Samsung designs the NOTE III or IV to have "normal" SD Card capability. Not Micro. Since the normal (or next size up) cards have twice the storage capacity.

While it would be nice to have more internal memory, you can put in a 64 GB microSD and it will likely be read (the Note 2 can already read them). MP3's don't necessarily have to reside in internal memory, so why not just use a 64GB micro-SD instead? ;The price is down to under $50 if you shop around.

won't happen !!! by the way Samsung has invented a technique which will allow sdcard to be as large as 128GB or more...and faster than current technologies..maybe wait for Samsung S 5 and Note IV maybe..I doubt if note 3 would come with it

Why would a bigger SD card physically have any impact on what can be read by the phone? Samsung's devices support exFAT and a 64GB max SD card. It's not the micro (vs. standard) SD card that's imposing that limitation. Some other manufacturer's devices don't support exFAT at all and can only handle a max 32GB micro SD card.

For that, you'll probably need otg. Meaning a short cable or adapter with micro USB male at one end and female USB at the other end and that will give you the ability to connect a 512GB USB to your phone!

Dude that is crazy. Wanting to 500gigs. Even if I had that much music I would carry it on a 512gig sdd or HDD. The note 2 has otg so it is easy to swap info as needed. I carry drivers and other miscellaneous because I do free troubleshooting and fixing old people's computers. I would to have 128 or even 256 SD cards but I wouldnt mind a 64gb note3 with 64gig micro SD. That would be great and less compromising.

I am 100% with you although it's not just music I would fill 500GB with.
I have a 500GB SSD on my laptop and ideally I would be able to carry ALL OF MY FILES on my smartphone. Android, unlike the other toy mobile OSes, can do practically the same things a regular PC does and the Note II's display is big enough (still small for me though) to ENABLE taking advantage of all of the Android's capabilities.
Plus, there always are Allshare Cast, HDMI out, BT keyboard and mouse and USB OTG. In a pinch, Android smartphones can perfectly act as PC replacements (god I love this stuff and god I hate the guts of crap like iOS and other such dog sh*t!). I travel a lot and live abroad for several weeks at a time, on shorter stays I am not even carrying my laptop anymore.
I am one of those who always buy the biggest internal storage variant and the biggest external memory card which fits, at the moment I have a 16GB Note II with a 64GB Samsung UHS-1 card, if 64GB or 32GB Note IIs were sold in Europe I would have gladly paid for the biggest internal storage option available (plus, of course, the biggest fitting memory card).
The cloud is GREAT but ONLY for backups and quick syncing of SMALL files across different devices. Using it in place of local storage is for non-powerusers...
I hate it so much when I am out and about and I need some less-used file which I am not keeping on my Note (for lack of space...) and I have to retrieve it via Samsung Link (which, BTW, itself is awesome).
As for your idea of using full sized SDs, I would be all for it especially since I advocate 6"/6.3" smartphones and we are saving "so much space" with "wonderful ideas" like micro and nano SIMs (...) so I believe they would fit but that's not going to happen. We are going to have to wait for the normal evolution of micro-SDs' capacity.

Maybe you should ask Sammy to make a note with multiple compact flash slots so you can put twice the storage capacity.
For me 64gb is enough. I just hope they skip 16gb models. To small for for my needs.
I don't do cloud computing because I don't have internet access everywhere.
Anyways I also heard and read about a person who modified his note 2 to have 288gb

So get yourself a 1-terabyte Seagate Wireless Plus drive and use that (or stick it to the back of your phone). 802.11g/n, 1TB capacity, rechargeable battery and, best of all it can act as a bridge to your regular wi-fi router so you don't have to keep switching access points. Comes with a USB 3.0 adapter so you can load up your music fast. Android app available at the Play Store (some people seem to think it's Apple only. It isn't).

What kind of thread is this really? From the title, it sounds like you have already established that the note 3 doesn't support "normal sd card" and then you say I hope it'll have normal sd card..... Makes a lot of sense.

USB-OTG... a great solution for keeping your storage in a particular location. Not much good if I want to suddenly have access to all my storage when I'm at a friends house though.

This thread is about hoping for future, BETTER options as far as storage goes.
And yes, multiple MicroSD cards in one phone would be a suitable alternative.
Better yet, multiple normal SD cards would be even better.

Why would a bigger SD card physically have any impact on what can be read by the phone? Samsung's devices support exFAT and a 64GB max SD card. It's not the micro (vs. standard) SD card that's imposing that limitation. Some other manufacturer's devices don't support exFAT at all and can only handle a max 32GB micro SD card.

The 64GB "limit" doesn't actually exist. It's just that there are no larger capacity cards. If you align the pins or use a correct adapter you can use a 128GB card without any problems.
OP, I hope you're actually ripping the FLACs from a CD or getting them ripped, converting MP3s to FLAC won't do you any good.

I'm sure Sammy would do it, but at what cost? The unlocked model of the Note 2 is already north of $600 ... even with carrier subsidies a phone with what you want would cost at least that, probably $2000 unlocked. All the fun and games that would make it possible just isn't worth it to me. No smartphone is.

$1400 more for a SD card slot compared to microSD card slot... sounds legit
A better solution would be a phone with 2 microsd slots. Wouldn't cost a small fortune.

I plan on picking up a dell venue pro 11 tablet (Baytrail) and was wondering how hard is it to dual boot these tablets? Id like to get android on. Is there a general thread out there?

The asus t100 thread might be relevant. The hardware is near identical.
In its current state, its not looking good. But unlike on the RT tablets and the clovertrail tablets, things do actually attempt to boot, so there is promise for the near future. Android you can get to boot fully, but its unusably slow and buggy.
One of the most used software is Bluestacks which is alright but not excellent, and it runs it sort of like a VM. Not sure you can actually Dual Boot it unless you buy a Dual OS device such as the Asus Transformer Book Trio, there was a Dual Booting software in the works which look promising but there's no news on it.

give me $450 to buy a dell venue pro 11, and I'll get started on it as well
wait for someone with some technical skills and try and post their results... hopefully it's not as bad as the T100

so it should be possible to install different OSs maybe one with a bootloader. shouldn't be to much different on the venue pro because win 8.1 kind of recommends it.
Does anyone know if the venue pro 11 baytrail version has soldered emmc memory or a msata solution for internal storage? i also would like to upgrade to 4gigs of ram to use it as replacement for my old notebook (2gig with no dedicated memory for graphics are really not what i'm hoping for)

Storage I dont know.

It will most likely will come with a soldered memory making it really hard to be user replaceable, as far as I'm aware the Bay trail configuration only comes with 2gb RAM, but that might change in a couple days (November 7th) when this tablet is released. I'd suggest you check prices over at Amazon and Walmart since they're offering the 8 Pro at cheaper prices than Dell.
Hey guys so I have been working on a way to fix our android issues. Currently this is still a proof of concept thing, but I have a sort of dual boot going. I have made a video of it in action.

Basically it is still really crude, but it is running in virtual box with a program called Genymoiton. It is decently fluid, but the 3D acceleration does not work (I am working on a fix) and the click and hold is still a little buggy because it does not register the tablet as a touchscreen, it does only clicks. This is also being worked on, but hopefully my goal here is to have both systems running inside of each other, so that we can have quick access to both. I will keep you guys posted with what else I can do, and I will probably put up another video sometime soon.
