Dell Venue pro 11 windows 8 - Windows 8 General

I plan on picking up a dell venue pro 11 tablet (Baytrail) and was wondering how hard is it to dual boot these tablets? Id like to get android on. Is there a general thread out there?

The asus t100 thread might be relevant. The hardware is near identical.
In its current state, its not looking good. But unlike on the RT tablets and the clovertrail tablets, things do actually attempt to boot, so there is promise for the near future. Android you can get to boot fully, but its unusably slow and buggy.

One of the most used software is Bluestacks which is alright but not excellent, and it runs it sort of like a VM. Not sure you can actually Dual Boot it unless you buy a Dual OS device such as the Asus Transformer Book Trio, there was a Dual Booting software in the works which look promising but there's no news on it.

give me $450 to buy a dell venue pro 11, and I'll get started on it as well
wait for someone with some technical skills and try and post their results... hopefully it's not as bad as the T100

with the t100 you can get into an efi like in this video too boot linux from an usb stick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsp8XFcAS7o
so it should be possible to install different OSs maybe one with a bootloader. shouldn't be to much different on the venue pro because win 8.1 kind of recommends it.
Does anyone know if the venue pro 11 baytrail version has soldered emmc memory or a msata solution for internal storage? i also would like to upgrade to 4gigs of ram to use it as replacement for my old notebook (2gig with no dedicated memory for graphics are really not what i'm hoping for)

Memory on all the windows tablets so far has been soldered.
Storage I dont know.
Storage != Memory.

It will most likely will come with a soldered memory making it really hard to be user replaceable, as far as I'm aware the Bay trail configuration only comes with 2gb RAM, but that might change in a couple days (November 7th) when this tablet is released. I'd suggest you check prices over at Amazon and Walmart since they're offering the 8 Pro at cheaper prices than Dell.

Hey guys so I have been working on a way to fix our android issues. Currently this is still a proof of concept thing, but I have a sort of dual boot going. I have made a video of it in action.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyLgvlgpExY
Basically it is still really crude, but it is running in virtual box with a program called Genymoiton. It is decently fluid, but the 3D acceleration does not work (I am working on a fix) and the click and hold is still a little buggy because it does not register the tablet as a touchscreen, it does only clicks. This is also being worked on, but hopefully my goal here is to have both systems running inside of each other, so that we can have quick access to both. I will keep you guys posted with what else I can do, and I will probably put up another video sometime soon.

I got the i5 version of the Dell Venue 11 Pro
I'm dual booted between Windows 8 and Android using:

Noob: Intel Android tablet to Windows 8? Possible?

OK, couldn't find a similar thread, so I will make a new one. I am a Noob when it comes to tablets and their OS restrictions (I've heard of boot-loaders and stuff but don't know exactly what they are).
So to the question - say I get something like this: Lenovo Ideatab K2110, which runs on an Intel X86 architecture.
Then when Windows 8 come out, can I get a license and run it on the device? Will that be possible? I know it is sort of early, but I am thinking about tablets and evaluating the options. Not really a fan of Android and iOS as I've always used windows, so I was just wondering if I get an Intel-based ICS 4.0 device, whether I can upgrade to Win eventually if I am not happy with it.
Also, I haven't found anything on the net, for convertable Android Intel-based tablets (like the Transformer) - anyone read anything on the topic? As if I upgrade to Win 8, I'd prefer a keyboard-dockable device.
Any help will be much appreciated!
To clarify - I am asking because of affordability - currently Win 7 tablets are very expensive. But if I get Android and decide that Win 8 is worth the money eventually then I will probably invest in it. I know the switch from Win 7 to Win 8 will be easy but Win 7 is crap until Win 8 comes out AND it is more expensive than Android so I see no reason to buy such a device.
And while on topic - how much would an Android shave off the price of a similar system with Win 8? Are Win 7 tablets so expensive because of the hardware or because of the software?
Edit: Just saw a similar thread in the Dev forum! I guess someone else has the same idea as me and it sounds plausible! Just waiting for an appropriate dockable device then Still, anyone heard about any convertible tablets with Intel chips?
You may be the first one in XDA say that Windows 7 sucks.
yeah, it can be suck for Tablet because it is a platform which Windows 7 wasn't aimed for.
And i don;t have a clear answer for the question because they can have the same hardware but install an OS on it is a different story.
For an example, in order to install Windows on a iMac is a stupid progress, even other PCs can use the same specs.
On a tablet it isn't good as far as I am aware. On my laptop - I love it. Anyway, are we going to know for sure when the Win 8 beta and some Intel Android device is out? I mean, would guys around here work out whether it will be possible at that stage?

I bet most people here would buy off a tablet which run Windows 8 on a Second Gen Core i series.
ASUS seem to be a great deal over this.
does it use the regular BIOS when turned on? if so then yea it'll work. Im not so sure about that touchscreen though, there might not be drivers available for it. It really depends if the controller has been used regularly in windows, or if its some obscure chip that is only now being used in that device.
Based on little knowledge,Win 8 needs 'bios' , be it tablet or mobile.
OEM have to customise the hardware architechture.
I guess win 8 should run all the apps of win 7, based on the excellent backward compatibility of win o/s in general. again certain apps depend on the hardware architechture and the customisations the OEM offer. I may be wrong
As of now, the chaces for such porting seem low, unless some developers here in the community come up with another solution.
as long as it can have BIOS loaded, and drivers can be created, then the answer is yes, it will be possible

Thats exactly it,and with the cheap intel based android tablets coming on the market now,2 years later, this takes on more importance. I do wonder what boot loader they are using for the android tablets. I see that AMD is going to start getting into the mix,and that could be interesting because I understand that AMD has been supporting coreboot. If coreboot is ported to the chipsets in use,it might make an easy path to putting windows or linux on those tablets. Basicly, core boot handles low level hardware initialization, then loads an EFI or OpenBIOS payload, then your off and running In fact,if coreboot is ported,we might even see some RUN coreboot as the bootloader. With android,I can see simply using coreboot to directly boot into the linux kernel, and into android. But if they use it,its open source,so they need to release the code, and your good to go.

[Q] Which tablet to buy for windows 8 cp?

Hey guys,
i want to buy a tablet with 3G connection soon and planning to spend not more than 350€ / 460$.
Which tablet would you buy to install windows 8 cp ?
Thx for your help!
Cheers
TOmatoe
Do you know the WePad or ExoPC?
Just google a little bit & find out if it is soemthing for you.
I bought it one week ago and upgraded it with 2GB ram + 80GB SSD.
Win8 works quiet well on the pad, and it has the necessarry resulution for the split screen function where a second programm is shown on a third of the screnn size.
thx for the hint. I read very good and very bad ratings for the WeTab. Battery Life has too be very weak and the touchscreen is not very reative i read.
Does 3G / WLan work on WeTab with Windows 8?
I am looking for a reactive, snappy Tablet.
deleted
The first post was written with my WeTab under WiFi.
And this post using my mobile phone sim from my HD7 (3 Austria)
The touch behavior under W8 is excellent in my opinion.
Only the g-sensor isn't working correct at the moment and the light sensor is a bit strange sometimes. Haven't tested Bluetooth & HDMI so far.
I'm using Windows 8, Android 3.2.2, Android 4.0.3 and Ubuntu 12.04 Beta on the tab for testing and application development at the moment.
[Edit]
Changed back from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS ==> 11.10 due to touchscreen driver instabilities
I also have to buy a tablet and I would like to have Windows and Intel compatibility with Microsoft's worldwide, recommended buying now a windows 7 compatible with windows 8 in the future, or wait for the release of Windows 8? I saw the hp 2, it recommended? know other tablet?
suggest
I suggest you wait for the final release before buying a tablet.
Have tried it on HP Slate 2 , only not working properly is the N-Trig and it cannot detect your Sim Card for 3G connection.
for now windows 8 is in beta test, i think this problem there are because windows 8 are not final.
i would like to buy hp to use for now with windows 7 and after with windows 8 but i don't know if this hp will be ok for new windows 8.
at the moment which tablet would you recommend to buy to use with windows 7, 3G, Wifi??

But which is better? Exopc or wetab?
Personally I wouldn't buy any tablet hardware currently out, especially for a consumer preview. Wait until fall, when things are finalized and there are some good tablets at reasonable prices, specifically designed for Windows 8. Then you'll be in a far better position to get the best hardware with native support, the features you want, at a price you'll be comfortable paying. Patience is a virtue

Asked the same question myself.
dhgate.com have some great value tabs. ~$300 US (with $30 off at the moment) for a 1.66 atom 2gb ram and 32gb ssd.
In my opinion for the price why not go for it, in fact i'm about to.

you can always run android on it or whatever you want if win8 doesn't work out.
I'm going to have a play with one of these then maybe invest on a WoA version when they come out. The Nokia one sounds pretty cool.

If you are looking for something good, then i suggest you wait until the official windows 8 is released or atleast the RC version comes out so that manufacturers and start building tablets optimized for windows 8 that will be snappy, responsive and have long sustaining battery life. It's too early to suggest one right now. Have some patience

Dell Venue q/a

Hi;
I have lurked this forum since the HTC apache days. I understand this is a windows 8 forum, however my question, or thought is regarding installing windows 8 on a tablet that runs android. Now before I get chased out with a broom. Hear me out, this particular tablet runs an intel atom cpu and has 2gb of ram. Makes it perfect for windows 8 and it has a good form factor. The two tablets I have in mind are the Dell Venue 7 and Dell Venue 8 which come loaded with android 4.2.2 if im not mistaken. They seem like a bargain at this point. After reading some reviews they are built nicely and have some impressive specs. Amazing what you can get for under 200bux these days. Now again before I get chased out the room, I love android, however I feel windows 8 would fit my needs much better in the long run. These tablets have better specs than my old netbook running windows 7 on it and that machine is still going strong for me, now running mint linux.
Anyone here exploited the boot loader on these tablets yet? I would love to test one of these with windows 8 on them. It looks like I may purchase two Venue 7's today (one for me and one for the wife), they have similar specs to venue pros offered by dell at double the price.
Thank you.

I know nothing about the device in question, but my chance have you tried an OTG cable and a keyboard? I assume that if it is an X86 it may have a BIOS.
The existing x86 android devices have all had locked out bootloaders preventing boot of anything but android

Dell Venue 8 Pro Android

Hi!
I saw this video http://youtu.be/1WrRngZ4giE . And there is my question: is it possible to boot Android x86 on Dell Venue 8 Pro from pendrive?
thanks!
I tried BlueStacks and Genymotion but performance was poor. It will be great if you provide tutorial how to boot android from pendrive.
You need to get into the bios and disable secure boot. Hold the volume down key while booting.

its only the clovertrail and ARM ones that have such restrictions. The venue 8 pro is baytrail so has a full PC BIOS.
You might also know thay many have dove into this and find what they get isn't very useful.

It's not a BIOS as we've known for the past decades of x86 CPUs.
It's an EFI. A 32 Bit EFI to be precise.
Which is unfortounate, because 32 Bit EFI has not been used since the first generation of x86 Apple Macs, IIRC. PCs usually use 64 Bit EFI and there are not many options, that play well with it. IIRC it's only WIndows 8(.1) and OSX 10.something
Hello guys,
here is a Thread in the DELL Support Forum to request a 64bit uefi.
The old 32bit uefi is the problem, if the uefi is switched to 64bit, we could use the Android Rom from https://01.org/android-ia (for bay trail).
More users, more priority on dell side. Please request the update too, and make the thread public!

[Q] Acer Iconia Tab W4-820 Android/dual-boot?

Hey guys,
I'm considering the Acer Iconia Tab W4-820 tablet (8" / x86 Atom Z3740 / W8 / 2GB RAM) since it's really cheap now. It could replace my netbook which would be sweet, but I also need an Android tablet for some work.
Is there a way to dual-boot this thing with both W8 and droid?
Even better, is there a way to dual-boot this thing with some reasonable Linux distro and droid, without W8? Honestly I weren't even looking into touch-capable Linux distros yet.
I've been looking but information seems very scarce or none for this particular tablet. I found someone dual-booting other Acer tablets, and found some Acer support article about being able to boot their tablets into another OS by using a USB-LAN adapter and booting from LAN, but not sure if either of those would work with W4. Also I don't have a USB-LAN adapter so something simpler would be nice.
Thanks in advance for any info.
Yes and no. It depends on what you want. If it's Windows 8.1 and Android, possible.
Do it with your own risk, I'm not responsible for any damage.
Lets get started...
First Acer W4 820 is Bay Trail based, i.e. Atom z3740 is Bay Trail (confirm by searching in Google and navigate to Intel website details on the processor). The tab has 2GB RAM, which is more than enough. An internal space of 8GB is required (to install Android). Backup the existing OS and valuable data as Android installation is slightly unstable (do not worry, very rarely goes wrong but no idea about camera). A laptop or desktop is optional but a good practise.
Now goto the following website and read the guidelines
01.org/android-ia/guides/quick-start
and read the guidelines, it's not listed for this tab, so read general guidelines.
Next goto the following website
01.org/android-ia/downloads
and download the required version of Android for "Bay Trail". Follow the steps in the quick guidelines website to install, and you're completed installation.
 An advise, Android is for light usage, not at all like Windows tab.
Thanks. I know the process but in the meantime I gave up on it and bought a cheapo droid tablet instead. I need droid for some work (related to mobile Chrome) and thought the win tablet could be a replacement for my old Eee 901.
But I couldn't find any report about anyone having success with installing an alternative OS on the W4 - quite the opposite in fact, someone reported that the method did not work on W4. And since I definitely didn't want to pay any money just to have a W8 machine, I didn't buy it. Every time I want to buy a mobile computer I decide upgrade of the desktop is a better investment. In this case SSD > tablet.
So my nearest project will be to install some proper Linux on that new droid tablet
:good:
