How to identify fake and genuine nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hell all XDA members!
Next week I'm going to purchase a nexus 4 (16GB) version. Play store hardware market not supporting my country. Therefore I have to go for a 3rd party seller.
I'm not a newbie to the Android world. I already have an Android phone.
I want to know, how do I identify fake and genuine Google Nexus 4 (16GB)? I suspect there may be fake chines Nexus 4.
Apart from that, are there any way to view hardware specifications by using dial pad?
Any help really appreciate.
Thanks!

if the phone is slow then you know it isn't the real deal xD

Yes friend. Its a good point, but I think it's not a accurate test.

You could do an IMEI check. Once you get the phone press *#06# and IMEI number will show. Then google IMEI checker (http://www.imei.info/) seems like a good one. That will tell you information about your phone. Also, once you get the phone just go to settings-about phone, theres some info there.

Can i send apk files to Nexus 4? If i can, then i can perform a benchmark test.

Go to the following URL: http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/auth_model_check2.jsp?esn=111111111111111111 (substitute the IMEI number for the 1's) -- it should return manufacturing information about the device.

fake nexus 4?
Greetings,
Did you get that nexus 4? Hope it was original. Who did you get it from? I am also waiting for one myself and will check if it is fake as soon as it arrives
Thanks

Another tipoff is the screen. I've seen knockoff phones before (Note II for example) and the screens aren't in the same league as originals. LG put a decent panel in the N4.

CPU-Z -
Know the specs.. Good clones will usually have the stuff people will look for on the surface.. Working wifi, cellular data, camera, speakers. They will usually skimp on things people wouldn't normally check ~ have lower res screens, less ram, missing sub features ( GPS, LED for camera, Gravity Sensors, sometimes even a microphone etc) and less RAM. Some also have really crummy touchscreens, have difficulty detecting touches around the edges ( try typing with the keyboard or using an app)
As a side, is the N4 a popular target to clone? It seems like it would be a low risk considering its price point vs the competitors.. Also it seems like the target audience for this phone would be more capable to spot a fake ( again vs the mainstream phones)..
Seems like I always see the grey markets flooded with Samsungs and Apple, can't say I have ever seen a Nexus phone or tab. At least in Shanghai / Hong Kong

Contact me. I'm in UK. Will order and ship it to you. ( will open a secure connection between you're machine and mine ) you can order and despatch it

--> I traded my HTC One for a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 with someone through Craigslist. Unfortunately, I was so excited to get the phone I only used imei*info to verify the phone's authenticity and checkesnfree*com to see if the phone was blacklisted. (new user so can't post links)
Results from both sites were a "go" so I did the trade.
With T-mobile (or any carrier) I knew I wouldn't get 4G or LTE speeds with this model phone, which was fine. However, it was impossible for me to get off EDGE (pure H3LL after having LTE with the HTC).
Did the research I should have done before doing the trade and found out at least one easy way to ID a fake i9500: Check the phone's serial number. It shouldn't be "123456789ABCDEF" - obvious enough, if you know where to look. If it is you absolutely have a fake.
They may get smarter and this not work to check the i9500's, but for now it's good enough.
POINT: Don't be an idiot like me and fail to do your research first . Checking a couple websites isn't enough.
[Placing the post in Galaxy S4 section also]

Just download "os monitor" from any market and it will tell you everything from the number of cores to chip set, CPU e.t.c that should do the trick along with the imei number.

I have the same question but my question is how do i spot a genuine lcd digitizer with lcd from a fake one?

Nfc on gnote n7000

Hi Gurus,
Is there any possibility that we can get NFC feature on GNote in near future?

Nope.
It needs hardware that the N7000 doesn't have.
Buy the LTE version if you want that.

I was sure NFC was built in the Note. I'm surprised it isn't. I bought the Note thinking to keep it for a long time but now I'm disappointed because I'm sure I saw it advertised almost everywhere that the Note has NFC. %@C*//

Buy the LTE (AT&T) Note for NFC.
BTW if they do release a sim card capable of holding a NFC chip, your after market Alloy back will block it from working...
Also that Moneto link looks scammy to me, "Booster stickers" are complete bull****.
In fact If the sticker has any metal in it it'll make it harder for the NFC Arial to pickup any signal.

lol, you have no idea how NFC works do you?
The NFC is NOT built into the battery, Its a part of the main-board and Snapdragon architecture
see pics here:

this is simple.
you either buy the Korean Model (not recommended)
or you buy the LTE Snapdragon model
or you live without NFC and buy the N7000 (Exynos chipset) International version.
I gotta ask, what exactly are you guys using nfc for? Trying to figure out the hype. Please be as detailed as possible.
What the heck does the NFC battery do since the "NFC enabled" ones have the the extra connections for the anntena

Basically:
-You can store your information like for say your credit card info on your phone and if you find a NFC enabled payment device like seen in Toys R Us or Best Buy you can just scan your phone instead of having to pull out your card all the time. This replaces your card entirely.
-Android Beam: Let's you exchange information by putting two phones with NFC in them to exchange info like videos, pictures, links, and making payments(It's not made yet, but probably in the future).
These two are the only uses I could think up of right now that is right now available in the U.S. In other countries you can use them as bus passes too like in South Korea.
Android Beam only works in ICS at the moment..

Sony is going to push this hard - look for sony nfc smart tags on Amazon.
Are you guys really that comfortable to store all that personal information on a smartphone?

Well, If your using the Android pattern lock you should be safe, as even FBI can't break it
The NFC ready battery I think is that it has a NFC antenna, the chip is on the phone itself I believe...

[Q] What can i do with this replica ?

Hi, a friend received from his cousin, as gift a "galaxy s4" but after he asked me to take a look at it, I said him that phone is a fake one.
Now I want to ask you what can I do for him, because he doesn't want to sell it.
Can I flash the official firmware and ROM ? what about the rooting method ?
The phone is smaller than the real one, has the air gestures but they work only on the home and app screen(not in webpages, etc), is micro-sim also.
Also you can see from the pictures the result of Antutu Benchmark test and other pictures that may help you.

If its a knock off s4 you can't use ANY ROMs or mods that were designed for the s4. Its got different hardware so any s4 ROMs won't work and could brick it.
There likely aren't rooting methods available because there isn't a big developer following to create rooting methods.
The software it has now is the software the device will have forever.

Bin it. Tell the friend to slap his cousin.
Thanks, he thinks even his cousin didn'nt knew the phone is fake.
I thought flashing other firmware would make sensors to work better.Thank you for the answers.
The IMEI number belongs to NOKIA 1661. lol
Why not let him use it if it's a gift. It's not like who purchased it got cheated. May be his friend knew he is buying fake one.
Wow that's the best fake product I've ever seen. Find out where he got it and beg to import a lot
Wow antutu scores not bad for a replica if its a real score. I've seen some knock offs with modified antutu scores. But if that score is real, its actually not bad, Galaxy S3 range.

He means the phone is forcing a fake score, not that you photo shopped the image and changed the numbers. A phone can manipulate benchmarking scores by over performing in the tested areas briefly, without giving any real world performance boosts.
Even TouchWiz does this.
Its one of many reasons why benchmark scores are utterly pointless and meaningless.
As for the device and what to do with it...again...you won't be able to modify it without figuring out how to root it and build custom roms for it yourself. There won't be any ready to go software for it. Use it as is and enjoy. Could make a great backup phone, or spare to use when you are going somewhere a more expensive phone might get broken. (I always keep my last phone handy for when I go to the amusement park or something)

Because its a fake. Its not a great phone. Things don't work right on fakes. There is no way around this. No matter how much you try to convince yourself this thing is as good as a real s4 its not. Accept it and see the phone for what it is...a decent wifi device for web browsing.
Also I suggest not using any banking apps or going to bank websites on it because god only knows what the software is recording and sending to someone.

[Q] How do I know if my friend's device is a fake?

Hi.
My friend recently got a brand new phone as a birthday present from her parents. It's supposed to be an S4, but there's something fishy about it.
I don't know where it was bought, either, but I suspect it might have been bought online somewhere.
As far as I can tell, the hardware looks exactly like it should (the correct dimensions, battery etc.) and it's definitely running TouchWiz, but it still seems kinda fishy because:
The serial number, as reported by the system, is 0123456789ABCDEF, which obviously isn't correct.
Some features, like NFC, cannot be enabled and when I go to its settings page, it just shows the message "Empty".
Google apps (like Gmail and Google account sync) are missing (I don't know if all are missing or just some)
I found at least one system app with a seemingly Chinese name, which I don't think should be there.
I don't have any other devices to compare it to, but what would you think of this? Does it seem like it's the real deal or just a very well-crafted fake?
Why not try 1 of the device identifying apps in the play store?

Or show the device information from settings > about device.

I don't have access to the phone since it's not mine, so I can't post any screenshots yet, but I looked at the device information screen and it did report as being a i9500, the only suspecious-looking thing was the weird serial number.
I've never heard of a fake device that is this identical to the real deal, and that's what makes me so unsure if it's real or not. Personally I'm leaning against real, but possibly with a version of TouchWiz that's not normal (at least not for my region).
I'll probably post some pictures and/or screenshots once I get ahold of the phone again.
do this download antutu from play store or apk from Google and install it run dir score and device info and you should pretty much give all of the info required, by the way 'm sure it's a Chinese make s4
check benchmark
Or use a few of the Samsung dialer codes. They don't work on the fakes.
It sounds like a clone..
Just look at the screen quality.
A fake one would not have that gorgeous Full HD Super AMOLED display. That simple...

Prototype Build TP with HDMI

So I just snagged a prototype/developer model Play that does have HDMI out on it and I'm wondering in advance what the best choice of bootloader and/or firmware to use for maximum performance and battery life without interfering with the HDMI out functionality.
I did my best to sort through the ten million "I wish my Play had HDMI out" threads and what I could glean from MAYBE legit prototype discussion threads sound like it probably has parts of its modem removed to make room for the HDMI (which is fine since I want it as a portable/dockable game device) and that battery life might have a problem, which I would guess is from constant signal search that can probably be disabled.
But does anyone here actually have one of these? I'd love to benefit from someone else's experience with them instead of having to make all the mistakes myself and figuring everything out the hard way!
Thanks!
Mind posting some photos?

I actually -just- won an auction for one of these off of Ebay... So I like the OP want to know, what's the real story with these units? I know they were display units for the stores to show off but besides that I mean. Do they have functional cellular radios? Are they unlocked? If I do a system restore through the normal menus will it screw itself over and never be able to use the HDMI properly? Does plugging in the HDMI turn off the XP's screen or does it splits its horsepower between the two screens?
Couldn't pass up on buying one, seems like a piece of history. I will post pics when it arrives (like a week) if that interests anyone.

LoL yeah me too! I'm not at all surprised the guy who bought the other one also came here straight away with exactly the same questions as I have. There's still one left, if anybody wants it. We haven't received them yet but you can see the pictures the seller posted on eBay if you just search for "xperia play hdmi". I agree it would be nice to see the actual mainboard and once I give mine a complete function check I'll probably open it up and take some pictures.
I think that you have something different in your roms/kernels what let your Plays to use hdmi. So there is probably now roms or kernels u can use without loosing hdmi. Only root and mods

I actually sold my Xperia PLAY about a month ago, sad to see it go but I moved on to a Nexus 5 in December and it took me all that time to let it go. Mine was not an HDMI model though, it was an early AT&T model without the branding.

There are some ROMs out there that are meant for those without radios/cell planes, such as Xperia NXT Gaming, but your HDMI might not work properly.
There were stories a few years ago about someone who said they had a prototype unit, but not many actual cases. One guy even tried modding an HDMI in there.

The phone showed up in immaculate condition, as if it had never been used. The HDMI port is very rough as you can see, with exposed circuit board. At this point I haven't been able to get the HDMI to work - I can't find any options for it in the settings and trying two different HDMI cables on two different displays hasn't worked yet. It seems the seller was correct when he said the phone couldn't connect to its network, as putting my valid ATT Sim card didn't get me signs of life. WiFi works fine. If anyone has any questions or any ideas on how to make the HDMI work, I'm all ears.

Well I finally received my phone, postage due I might add. It is indeed in practically new condition and mine came with retail packaging including headphones and a little dock but no charger for whatever reason. In the mean time I am willing to pull the back off and take some pictures of the board if people are interested in that sort of thing.

None of which seems out of the ordinary for an early build I guess... Anyway, I definitely won't update anything - other than rooting - until I get my display port adapter. Hopefully it will simply send an identical 854x480p signal out the port as it sends to the screen and it'll be as simple as that - one can only hope.

Did I buy a fake

I bought a phone off CL (yes I know) everything looked super legit
the model number though is a G9006V
Is this a real S5 or a chinese copy. Seems to be no way to root or install custom

Definitely FAKE. Samsung uses Snapdragon or Exynos chipsets only.

If your phone really has a Mediatek processor then it is a fake. But as already mentioned, not all programs correctly identify the chip. You should confirm the finding with another program and preferably provide us with a lot more details about your phone so that we have more confidence in the verdict.
Photos of the phone and any literature? In particular the top exterior, the label under the battery (you may wish to obscure part of the IMEI number) and a screen shot of at least the Settings menu > General > About Device. Particularly helpful would be installing the Phone Info app and tell us the results.

Good fakes fake the Phone info too.
..
If its fake, you should file a police report. Its fraud and illegal counterfeiting.

I'm also wondering the same thing. Running CPU-Z returns MediaTek MT6592, 8x ARM Cortex-A7 @ 1.66 GHz.
I've looked at some other videos and discussions online on how to tell a fake one apart, but for the most part it looks real, has waterproofing seals, a 16MP camera, heart rate monitor (though i have my doubts as to its results), etc. The Android version is 4.4.2. The fingerprint scanner doesn't seem legit, though, as i don't really need to slide my finger over the home button and any finger will unlock it. All in all i'm not really bummed as it was a third of the price of the other S5's listed online and still is much better than my previous phone. Really i just wish i could find a way to root it... I actually never really considered that it might be fake, though i was a little curious after reading about some of the things here:
ibtimes.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-s5-10-amazing-hidden-features-you-never-knew-about-1445367
...notably the touch sensitivity, which i don't have as a setting.
The battery life is also really weird, when opening certain apps (QQ, Anki) the battery life rapidly falls (completely gone within a couple hours) and i've got to restart the phone for it to stabilize again. I can watch movies or listen to music for what seems like days, though.
Try connecting via usb the phone to the PC and opening Kies 3
Hey, thanks for the reply. I just managed to root it using the tutorial here (though CWM is upside down??):
youtube.com/watch?v=s66e-kwvKUU
Also, KIES 3 doesn't detect it, should i take that as a good sign it's a fake?
I think it's fake
Does the fingerprint sensor work? If not then it's absolutely fake.
Next is how much was the selling price? Too cheap means probably fake.
Now about the processor, the second you see anything other than qcomm or exynos, it's already fake.

Try this: Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app > Menu > 'Refurbishment Check'.
Yep, it says that it can only be used with Samsung phones. I guess that settles it.
