Prototype Build TP with HDMI - Xperia Play General

So I just snagged a prototype/developer model Play that does have HDMI out on it and I'm wondering in advance what the best choice of bootloader and/or firmware to use for maximum performance and battery life without interfering with the HDMI out functionality.
I did my best to sort through the ten million "I wish my Play had HDMI out" threads and what I could glean from MAYBE legit prototype discussion threads sound like it probably has parts of its modem removed to make room for the HDMI (which is fine since I want it as a portable/dockable game device) and that battery life might have a problem, which I would guess is from constant signal search that can probably be disabled.
But does anyone here actually have one of these? I'd love to benefit from someone else's experience with them instead of having to make all the mistakes myself and figuring everything out the hard way!
Thanks!

Mind posting some photos?

I actually -just- won an auction for one of these off of Ebay... So I like the OP want to know, what's the real story with these units? I know they were display units for the stores to show off but besides that I mean. Do they have functional cellular radios? Are they unlocked? If I do a system restore through the normal menus will it screw itself over and never be able to use the HDMI properly? Does plugging in the HDMI turn off the XP's screen or does it splits its horsepower between the two screens?
Couldn't pass up on buying one, seems like a piece of history. I will post pics when it arrives (like a week) if that interests anyone.
Seller posted: " This is a fully functional Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G R800AT - Prototype Build TP HDMI. This phone cannot be activated or used on ANY service. This is a prototype phone. Phone's hardware/software is fully functional."

LoL yeah me too! I'm not at all surprised the guy who bought the other one also came here straight away with exactly the same questions as I have. There's still one left, if anybody wants it. We haven't received them yet but you can see the pictures the seller posted on eBay if you just search for "xperia play hdmi". I agree it would be nice to see the actual mainboard and once I give mine a complete function check I'll probably open it up and take some pictures.

I think that you have something different in your roms/kernels what let your Plays to use hdmi. So there is probably now roms or kernels u can use without loosing hdmi. Only root and mods

I actually sold my Xperia PLAY about a month ago, sad to see it go but I moved on to a Nexus 5 in December and it took me all that time to let it go. Mine was not an HDMI model though, it was an early AT&T model without the branding.
For those curious I added the photos from my old prototype Xperia PLAY.

Would love to see some pics as well.
There are some ROMs out there that are meant for those without radios/cell planes, such as Xperia NXT Gaming, but your HDMI might not work properly.
There were stories a few years ago about someone who said they had a prototype unit, but not many actual cases. One guy even tried modding an HDMI in there.

Yep that's one of ours. I'm surprised we got them for the price we got them for, and that the seller described them to be "for parts" which would have been a shame. Unless I get some nasty surprises when it arrives I wouldn't sell it for twice the price I paid.

Always wanted to get my hands on a prototype play with hdmi never could find one:/
Sent from my LT28i using xda app-developers app

The phone showed up in immaculate condition, as if it had never been used. The HDMI port is very rough as you can see, with exposed circuit board. At this point I haven't been able to get the HDMI to work - I can't find any options for it in the settings and trying two different HDMI cables on two different displays hasn't worked yet. It seems the seller was correct when he said the phone couldn't connect to its network, as putting my valid ATT Sim card didn't get me signs of life. WiFi works fine. If anyone has any questions or any ideas on how to make the HDMI work, I'm all ears.

You can dial *#*#7378423#*#* goto service test - hdmi test. Few options there to test.
I'm also curious about this, such a presious gem you have

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried that and the video test did not display on the one monitor I have access to at this hour.
The HDMI status options all show as being "unknown"
The EDID reading option/ Edid Hex Data reads as "unknown"

Maybe someone who used this model before you flashed soft from other Play version and coz this u lost hdmi drivers in rom/kernel

yes
i had this phone with HDMI port 3 years age and used that for telecom exhibition
if you search on xda can find my post , i remember that i uploaded video and pictuesr both . but like always , some childish guys tried to say that was a lie ...
this is a real phone but is limited and just was for special offers to Sony-erricson like exhibitions .

I remember those posts everyone knew the phone was real lol they just didn't believe you had it because there were never any pics or vids that I remember anyway. But since you had the phone why aren't you telling him how to get hdmi working instead of sharing drama about how onetime childish people didn't believe you?
Sent from my LT28i using xda app-developers app

Well I finally received my phone, postage due I might add. It is indeed in practically new condition and mine came with retail packaging including headphones and a little dock but no charger for whatever reason. The HDMI output seems to be a Mac style mini display port aka "Thunderbolt". I'm a real Apple hater so I had to order an adapter. When it arrives, I'll post my results. In the mean time I am willing to pull the back off and take some pictures of the board if people are interested in that sort of thing.
It reports
Baseband version 7X30A-AAABQMAZM-1290_21-42
Kernel version 2.6.32.9-perf
Build number 3.0.1.B.0.270
None of which seems out of the ordinary for an early build I guess... Anyway, I definitely won't update anything - other than rooting - until I get my display port adapter. Hopefully it will simply send an identical 854x480p signal out the port as it sends to the screen and it'll be as simple as that - one can only hope.

[PROJ] Full UI Via HDMI Out (need a tester)

Okay I have a few ideas on getting this to work, none of which are that difficult. I'm writing up an app right now to try it out, I should have it ready within the next couple hours.
However, I do have a problem, I have no HDMI cable! So can someone who has one get into contact with me on Gmail.
Just send me an email and tell me you'd be happy to test and as long as you'll get with me on GTalk once I send the app to you to discuss whether it works or not and any issues you have.
I'll update this post with more info when I'm done.
EDIT: First alpha sent to my 3 testers. Waiting for a reply from them before more info.
You probably got some volunteers already.. but I do have an hdmi cable and can help if needed.
Thx for working on this

Actually I haven't had anyone email me yet, so if you wanna hit me up so I have your GTalk for later feel free.
Also, just a little more info, this will probably KILL performance while it is running, since it'll be a loop constantly copying frames from buffer to buffer, but it will probably still be usable. I don't know yet.
Be prepared, it may kill your cat, blow up your house, and then take over the world, all while creating as much heat as a nuclear reactor. (Or it may just work )
Added on Gtalk and email sent. Ready to help you test
Sorry for the delay. Even with the Android dev I've done I've never done anything multithreaded. I have to run the copier in another thread to keep the system from freezing, so I should still get it tonight, but it'll take a little longer than I thought.
Added you to gtalk. Just tested SlingPlayer w/ Evo over HDMI, no joy of course.
Eager to test your app when available.
Thanks,
LK

Mini HDMI and Micro HDMI are different.
Okay so the first release is an epic fail. It tries to copy the frame, but it doesn't ever end up over HDMI. Also it takes too long to copy the frame to get smooth video, I can copy ~ 3-5fps max, which is ridiculous. There has to be a better way. And I may have it. Uno momento

Capabilities of this type of device
Got mine its decent. Does anyone know if there will be very much development for this device.
I know they said they would put out some OTA updates and root was a possibility in the future.
This is my first device of this nature and I am clueless to any possibilities it may have. I know I like
to root any device I can and I'm hoping to do the same with this.
I'm just hoping their OTA updates fix the crashing, hell when some apps crash and it asks if you want to report it, the report crashes as well!
I ordered two of these. It is junk. Move along. Laggy and one of my units is broken. Company doesnt care. It is just a rebranded CX-01...

It looks to me like they do care quite a bit. They are answering all kinds of questions on the Kickstarter backer's page and on Facebook. I believe that they are working hard on an OTA update to be released very soon....At least I hope it's soon.

I bought mine for plex as well and no luck so far. It won't connect to my server despite every other android device I have being able to. Commenters on Kickstarter are reporting problems with it as well.
Got Root
I got this device rooted awhile back and downloaded some apps to help with
performance. It runs alot better now. I can't beleive they couldn't fix some of these
issues before it came out. I installed the beta updates they put out and it helped.
It seems like they don't want to give out the info needed for people to do developement
because they are afraid someone will get it up and running better then they can.
I'm just looking forward to running custom roms on this thing.
I've owned one of these, and also a bunch of the dual core sticks.
The Equiso is not worth the price. It is pretty much a cx-01 or c-77.
I found the video performance to be substandard.
I sold it for a loss after a week.
You can get a dual core for cheaper.
Even the original MK802(single core allwinner a10) is better.
If I had to buy a stick right now it would be the dual core MX1.
If I wanted to wait I would pick up the GK802 quad core stick(freescale soc!) or the uHost2 dual core stick.(more usb)
Let the buyer beware though! Check out everything you can before you buy!
Wow, that uhost2 looks really good. Would you happen to know of any good reliable retailers that have the Bluetooth capable one???

I have purchased this TV stick at Walmart the stock Rom is buggy until you root it and change the CPU governor. I have rooted it and removed the equiso update file from system/app now it doesn't pop up all the time which was kind of annoying. Check the edges of the screen, make sure there isn't a space between the glass and the bezel. Earlier runs have had this "screen separation" issue, fixable, but a pain to do. Check the colors on the screen, run a few tests to make sure it's not washed out.

The Complete Guide to 'Checking' a new N7
Make sure everything that should be in the box is in the box.
Make sure the N7 turns on. As it is booting up, do a 3-second visual scan of the whole thing to make sure you aren't one of the fraction of a percent of a percent of new owners who received an N7 with problems.
Check to see which programs you like to use.
Go to Google Play and use your $25 credit to buy other apps, games, or music that you enjoy.
Check to make sure that this new device is something you will enjoy using. Everyone has different needs and ways of working/playing with these devices... I enjoy the N7 so much I've almost entirely stopped using my iPhone and laptop, but my wife really just wanted something that would make playing and buying music easy without a learning curve or so she gave me her N7 and got a Kindle Fire (which is basically an Amazon sales vector you can hold in your hand, i.e. exactly what she wanted).
I'm serious above, but to be just a bit more serious: some small number of ANY new device will be faulty right out of the gate. This is why the term 'early adopter' was coined, to describe people who are willing to purchase a new device during the potentially-frustrating first days. This forum is one of the very few places people can go to get good information, so it is also one of the few places where people with problems can talk about them. This can make it seem like everybody has a faulty device, or like the odds are high that you will get a faulty device, when neither of those things are true. The number of people who do have faulty devices is small enough that it does not warrant a special "checking" of the device above and beyond what you would do with any new device. It's just that most people with perfectly fine devices are out there using them, rather than coming here and posting about how they aren't having any problems.
First thing to do it to check SSN Number on the box.
If it starts with :
C9O --> Built in September, All issues fixed
C8O --> Built in August might not be fixed
C7O --> Built in July, many has screen lift.
C6O --> Built in June, many has screen lift.
C5O --> Built in June, many has screen lift.

I have the MK808 which I bought after the minix g4 (micro usb issue...)
Looking back at it there are a couple of things which bother me going for a stick next time.
Most of the sticks have come with an internal wifi antenna which as you can read in most threads is a bad idea and can completely ruin the experience.
Now some of you will tell you to mod an external antenna, ... great.
Next is the ... lets connect a couple of things via usb thing like keyboard, usb drive etc etc.
In the end it is not a stick anymore. It is a device connected with a bunch of cables to other devices.
I really like to buy the minix n5, since it has alot more connectors already on the device but the only thing holding me back is the lack of an external antenna.

Hmm, in my opinion you have only 1 cable less (from usb to stick) so even with the Minix you still have
a bunch of cables !! Perhaps even more if you're planning to use headphone and mic !
And bad wifi connections is an occuring Android problem, this goes for phones, tablets and TV sticks.

Yeah for a part I can agree, but imagine how the price would increase when there's only the name of a well known manufacturer on the outside, while the inside still remains with parts of say Rockchip, etc..
I've got an MK808 now for 3 weeks, and must say I'm more than satisfied with it, it's working flawless and I
don't mind the lack of support because there are so many Forums about these Chinese gadgets that the answer

With that said, if any of you are interested, be on the lookout for some folks selling theirs since they do not want to keep the watch once it has been shipped.

Nice, didn't know they hit ebay already. Got mine in April and I can't complain too much about it, only problem I'm having is that my google account has authentication enabled so the gmail notifications don't work unless I remove the authentication, but otherwise it's pretty nice.
I've been in touch with the founder/owner and asked her if she feels the hardware is capable of carrying the Android 4.4w
