S4 (i9505) arriving soon, problems to look out for? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Finally got to order my very first smartphone, the S4 (i9505 Black Mist)! It's going to be here in a few days, and I couldn't be more excited. However, browsing through this forum and others, it seems there's been a number of problems people have pointed out, or hinted at. I was just wondering if anyone had a compilation of them to look out for, so I'll know whether to return a defective/bad unit. Some of the issues I probably won't notice at all, however, if they're and I can test for them, I'd like to do so and return the phone if they are present. I'd rather not have my first phone come out of the box already having problems, especially since I'm paying full retail price for it.
Thank you very much in advance to whoever can list the problems and means to test/look for them.

....or at least a link to a site that lists the common issues.

One of the biggest problems seems to be dead pixels or random green/purple tints on pure white. There may also be some smearing problems.
You can search for these using Dead pixel tester.
Please press thanks if I helped you!

Read about that as well. Weren't there some other graphical bugs/issues that indicated a faulty unit? Such as "smearing" or the AMOLED display not going completely dark when it's supposed to?

I was just about to say the same thing!
@ OP - No point in failing the phone before its even arrived. A 'problem' to someone else may not be a problem to you, and you probably won't have any hardware issues either.
Just open the box and set it up and use it your way, and enjoy it.

Oh I totally will enjoy it, and I do realize a lot of problems tend to be nitpicks. But I just have a thing about me to where if I have even a tiny defect in the electronics I buy, it bugs the hell out of me. For instance when the Xbox 360's launched, I must have returned about 5 or 6, all for issues stemming from RRoD, to a horrible "scritch" sound in the DvD drive, to a faulty fan that would cause the system to overheat a bit faster than usual.
This is my first smartphone and I'll probably have it for a good 2 years (I'm not under contract though), so I want to be sure it will go that length without seemingly small problems at first becoming larger problems later, especially since my warranty would probably expire long before the 2 years is up.

I've had 3 i9505 replacements and every single one of them had 'banding' across the screen at low brightness in a dim room. My 3rd handset was the best so I have no just left it but it's still visible and bugs the hell outta me!

There aren't that many problems as these forums make it out to be. What you could look for is a tint on the screen, sometimes there is a green or yellow tint. You can compare with a friend's S4 or go back to the store. If you want to play it safe you can just open the phone right there and then, and check. However, DO NOT mistake this for the natural AMOLED yellow tint that you won't even notice if not comparing to a LCD display phone. Also, make sure both phones have "movie mode" enabled in the screen mode settings when comparing, other modes might produce a small tint on whites. There's also an option that dims whites when browsing the web to save energy, uncheck that.
Anyway, if there really are problems, they should be glaring obvious and you shouldn't worry about it. Enjoy your new phone!

Yeah that's the kind of thing I was afraid of. I bought my S4 online and it's shipping now, so checking it out immediately for defects won't be an option. Hopefully it doesn't have any such issues, but I've gotten a good idea thus far of what to look out for. Thanks for the help; can't wait to try out my first (hopefully in good condition) smartphone!

Things to check when my google nexus 7 arrives to make sure everything is fine in it?

Hya,
I'm new on here , so please be easy on me with my question  . I recently purchased Google nexus 7 tablet from some local website who asks the customers to report any defect with in one day, only then they will ship new product :crying: , So I'll get one day for checking . Since Google hasn't launched Google nexus 7 tablet here (India) officially, so I'm getting the imported one, website support peoples even ain't aware of how to get warranty if product gets turned in to black box .
I saw some q/a here and I found many peoples having problem with product (related hardware ones) . I'd be thankful if you guys could list some basic things to check pertaining to hardware of product to make sure everything is fine
Hi, I'm on my 5th replacement and everyone had a different fault!
First you want to check round the edge of the screen to make sure the glass is flush with the case and not raised up so you can push it down with your finger, If anywhere the problem is normally down the left side. (DON'T TRY TO REPAIR IT YOURSELF WITH THE SCREW FIX TUTORIALS!) In most cases the fix is just temporary and the problem returns. This is a defect!
The next thing you want to do is check for dead pixels & white light bleed out around the edge of the screen. This app is perfect for the job.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.ujacha.deadpixel
Next you want to check the speakers by cranking them up to 100% and play several video or audio files to check for crackling/distortion/popping.
It's well known that the speakers are very cheap but they should still be crystal clear with the volume at it's highest.
Now you want to check the touch screens response. There is an issue with the screen not responding after heavy processing/game play where the screen becomes unresponsive down one half of the screen and only locking/unlocking the screen solves the problem.
First I would advise hammering the N7 with a game that is Tegra 3 supported for example Dead Trigger or Shadow Gun to get it nice and hot if at any time the screen becomes unresponsive then you have the same issue.
To double check run this app, you should quite easily be able to detect all ten fingers on the screen at all times.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.the511plus.MultiTouchTester
The last thing I would check is the connectivity through Wi-Fi & Bluetooth, this is the least common fault as far as I know. Just check you have nice strong signals with no drop outs.
So after all that if you have managed to put a tick in all the boxes I reckon you have a sweet device!
I hope this helps you and any one else out there and that you have more luck than I had finally getting a perfect working N7.

Great question (although I don't know if it's a dupe). Thanks for all the info mr_tris. That sucks you're having so many issues. I haven't noticed anything wrong with mine since I got it yesterday, but I'll check all the things you mentioned when I have the tablet in front of me.
Billy
@mr_tris jeez!! 5 replacement means something and very horrible so to speak . I really appreciate help and advises you posted. I'll make sure to check them out .
The only problem I'll have if found any problem in device is that I'll have to wait another 20 days since the new product will be imported by website peoples for me to make replacement
One other thing to check: the gyro.
Does the screen rotate normally or do you have to turn the device so the screen is practically vertical (assuming you choose to unlock rotation via the notification panel).
If you are into gaming, try a driving game or something to make sure the cars don't veer left or right.
I had this trouble on my second one and have read of quite a few other people having the same problem.
The only real issue I've heard about is the screen raising above the bevel some. Yea this is a defect as the screws are too long and pushes the screen out. Returning it 50 times isn't going to fix it. Only by chance may you get one where the screw is slightly smaller (1mm). The solution is to make a little washer out of some plastic and put it under the screw. It doesn't need much to fix it. The cover pops off just like a regular battery cover and the screws are right there. If it is a problem for you, why NOT try to spend 2 min and just fix it yourself?
You wouldn't even notice unless someone pointed it out. You literally have to turn the N7 and look across the screen to even notice it. Hardly anything to freak out about.
Some people have blown their speakers already too. Most have been after a long session of movie watching or music. I suggest to not blow your speakers out (using at Max volume for extended periods) right out of the box. Let the speakers break in first. Honestly the speakers are so loud anyway that I normally have it at 50% volume Max. Probably not an issue either but its good usage practice.
I've also heard of one or two screens fritzing out with lines and fades. Probably nothing to concern yourself with.
I haven't heard of anything else but I guess it would always be best to check it out thoroughly.
I do recommend unlocking first thing because it wipes all data including storage and saves. I'm using EOS rom and its heavenly. Trinity kernel is also awesome because he tweaks the colors of the screen to pop more.

Most important things are:
Screen - check viewing angles and color reproduction in the dark. Best reference is to use a site like GSMARENA for high res photos and screen reviews.
Body - Look for cracks or scratches, especially around ports and the headphone jack.
Things to disregard:
Slow system - this is just something you will have to deal with in an android environment.
Warm after prolonged use - again, normal.

No I don't have money to burn lol but I just don't think its worth the stress of over examining for defects. If you look hard enough you will see that something isn't 100% straight or a tiny spec of plastic is sticking out or whatever and then it will stand out like a sore thumb once you've noticed it lol. Give it a glance over and if it looks good to you then enjoy your tablet.

Is nexus 7 quality that bad?

I've ordered one and I'm looking around here and.. what happens with this tablet? 90% of them have an important screen / battery / software problem?
I am REALLY scared of what I am receiving after reading this section...
Don't be, the number of people on XDA are but a small percentage of those that purchase the tablet.
I bought mine very early on, my friend bought his just recently from a completely different retailer and he has no issues.
If you read enough and look hard enough, you may convince yourself something is wrong with your tablet when there may not be.
So get your device, enjoy using it, and is there something really wrong with it if when using it, everything is working as it should?
nope, i LOVE my N7! i use it almost everyday...more so than my acer iconia 10". the N7 is fast, light, and screen is awesome. the ONLY thing i dont like is the non-standard charging "mechanism" that it uses. i hate not being able to just grab a normal micro usb cord and charger and just charging it. other than that...no complaints.
Quality is great.
Go for it!
I've had mine since day one and no problems at all. Not only that, but I've installed it in the dash of my car and it's held up great.
No its no bad. There are defective devices out there. But the quality is not bad f you get a working one. That sorta contradicts its self but you know what i mean.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
When you have 1% of devices that could potentially be lemons... coupled with the fact a substantial amount of that 1% are XDA members... it's easy for a device to look bad when in the grand scheme of things, it's not. Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly a non-frustrated user. My screen magically cracked today somewhere between me holding it at the kitchen counter vs walking to my car, yet I never dropped it. That doesn't deter me away from buying another one since after all, mine was from the first gen batch, which if an issue is going to exist... it'll be there.
if you picky about minor issue, i think you should wait till at least October to be sure the problem is fixed. My has a minor screen lifted and there is a little static noise when turn the screen on/off. Other than that, it a good tablet. Yeah go for it.
Screen lift is ridiculously common, but that's the only really popular issue. Fortunately, there are flush screens out there, and it's not guaranteed to be a serious problem down the road even if you do get one that's a little loose on the left side.
Although there are fewer reports of lift in C8 units, the underlying cause has not been addressed. There was a big thread about this earlier today.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856203
I had three units with screen lift and was unwilling to tolerate it, so now I'm waiting to repurchase until they get this cleared up. If you read through the first two pages of that thread you'll find that I asked the first person who claimed to have a flush C8 unit for photo verification, and that photo revealed screen lift. That was disappointing. I was hoping these newer ones with updated packaging were mostly fixed.
Most people who claim to have flush screens haven't actually checked, but that says something about how minor it usually is. Since you ordered from the Play store, you won't have to deal with ASUS if the worst case scenario happens (a cracked screen), and a hair of separation shouldn't prevent you from enjoying an otherwise great device, so long as you're confident in the warranty.
It really is a great tablet. I wish I'd kept my second unit from the Play store, the one with the least separation, because I really enjoyed having it.

Well, keep in mind that when people who are not XDA regulars have a problem they hit up Google and XDA links are generally on the top of the list for ANY Android device, so they come here to ask and/or complain about it. Then you have XDA regulars who tend to be techie types who are VERY picky about having perfection in their toys. So things the average Joe wouldn't even know is a problem can come across like its the end of the world. Finally, as many point out, you only see the problems because people don't generally come here to post "everything's fine" unless they are being snarky (like a thread I posted a while back) or just that rare person who does that sort of thing...usually as a counter balance to all the negative posts.

It's like if you visit a new country and the first thing you do is walk into a hospital... "what's wrong with this country? Everyone here is sick."
This forum is where the few people who have problems gather to discuss them, and they are a very small percentage of Nexus 7 owners. It's just that people for whom the device is working fine don't post every day and talk about their experience, while people having problems do.
Okay, thank you everyone for your replies!
It's a shame but I think what you say is true: even if this is a hi-grade tecnology forum, only the people with problems talk and talk about them, while the people without problems only reply them maybe some times and never talks about that anymore.
Anyway, I kinda hate when you guys say "Mine is ok! only the left side is a bit loose", "Its great! only the screen fails after 2h of use", "Its amazing, yet the screen cracks everytime time I touch it on this sire.."
250~$ is not enough to expect a FULL QUALITY DEVICE? I owned an iPad and a Galaxy Tab and I had never had to expect or to suffer a minor problem, and you're talking about really important screen problems (a curved / loosing side / cracking side / etc. screen has A LOT of more % of cracking, or getting dead pixels, or having another problems).
I honestly don't understand that mentallity. We are not talking about a 5$ device (and even there we could have a discussion), ¡¡its more than 250 dollars!!
I think that if this problems happen is because people accepts it like that.

Does your Nexus 4 have a yellow tint ?

Should i return it ? everything else seems to work perfect, the yellowness annoys me a little but at the same time i dont think its that bad but my screen is more yellow than the one at the t-mobile store. I wanted to know what xda thinks.
Does anyone else have the same problem ? did you keep your nexus or return ?
I have read some other threads but i havent seen anyone state whether they decided to keep their nexus despite the yellowness.
p.s that a galaxy s2 next to the nexus
I remember others saying they had the same issue and someone explained that the yellow tint is caused by glue within the display and another component, IIRC.
How long have you had the phone, since it's supposed to go away after a while.

the tint is probably normal, mine was like that as well. thats what people have called a 'natural display' on xda while the entire techblogosphere has bashed google for it. the good news is you can calibrate it. i have made my panel shine, i love it dearly. if you are rooted give it a crack.

Possible switch Gnex > N4. Issues still?

Hi guys, thinking of finally taking the plunge and convert, from Sammy to Ally :highfive: However, I keep reading about all the issues, regarding throttling and yellow tint/ spots, etc and this causes me to worry. My Gnex has always been great, built in July '12, white and grey values have been great throughout. I'm wondering, many revs further, if LG finally tackled all the known issues. Perhaps with the new white version it's finally taken care of? About the yellow tint, if it appears will it EVER disappear or will it get back every time the phone heats. Since glue heats, cools down and then reheats again?
What issues? The majority of the "issues" you see are OCD, whiny crybabies that try to find the stupidest, most insignificant **** wrong with their phone.

Not sure if serious. There were actually some major issues regarding these yellow spots/yellow hue on the display. Legitimate reasons actually to send phones back to LG. My question still remains, are these aforementioned issues still present?

I've had my N4 for a few weeks now, and notice no yellow spots/hue or anything hardware-related wrong with it.
Edit: Haven't noticed any throttling either (wasn't really looking for it), but to be fair, I don't put my N4 under any kind of stress for the most part (gaming is done on my N10).
I have to agree. I have not seen any of these issues and niether has a buddy of mine that got an older one from CL (mine is a new one)
many of the issues were blown out of proportion and are non issues. some if the issues are rare, chances are that you will never run into them nor anyone you know will run into them. and some of the issues really are just people not knowing any better.

I have had my N4 for about 3 weeks and my only problem is that when I have an app that has a white background in the upper left corner there are several spots that are whitre than the rest of the screen i don't really mind otherwise the phone has been great only other issue is not waking up from charging over night (only has done this once or twice) and sometimes the screen won't come back on after a call but this only happened once. If you do get it make sure to get 16gb version for plenty of space.

Notes regarding the June batch of Ones compared to launch

Hi all! Well I finally exchanged my One because of the red noise issue that has been well described here on xda, so I thought I'd post my observations on how a phone built in March compares to one built in June.
First one: manufactured in Taiwan, March 9th
New one: manufactured in Taiwan, June 25th
First of all, I'm happy to report the red noise is gone feels like freedom! Hopefully it doesn't develop again but so far nothing I've done has caused the noise (putting it down on a table, using when warm (<35 degrees) etc.) So hopefully this means htc changed their sensor in some way so as to prevent the issue which is clearly hardware and can't be fixed through software updates for most people. The new sensor was manufactured on June 19th. Considering 86% of users report the issue http//forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317507 it's pretty unlikely I just got lucky on this one (why I am optimistic new sensors are different).
The build quality is also better than my first. The first wasn't bad compared to many people who had gap and screen problems, but there were some overhangs and poorly machined parts. The new one is perfect... Completely. So again hopefully this indicates they have improved their manufacturing and QC processes. Considering how prevalent these issues were at launch, it's pretty unlikely I got lucky twice rather than them improving QC IMO).
The display is also better. This probably isn't a batch specific thing since they use multiple suppliers (2 that I know of - sharp with renesas controller and JDI with Samsung controller). The first was a JDI and had very good brightness, black level, and a cooler white balance. The new one is also a JDI. It has a Warmer white balance though (I prefer cooler, even though warmer ones like the new one produce more accurate colors) and the contrast has improved quite a bit. Brightness is roughly the same between the two. Normally warmer white balance is seen in the Sharp displays from what I understand http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2202869. Perhaps it's not as warm as a sharp panel would be though since they seem pretty rare and I've never encountered one.
They seem to have changed the vibration motor because this one doesn't shake the table when it goes off seriously the first one was excessive. It also made an annoying noise when it went off. The new one is much quieter and smoother. It feels more like how my old iPhone 4s was (if you've had one, you know this is a good thing!)
They've changed the usb cable - the ends are rubber now instead of the hard plastic that was on the first one. Small change, makes it feel better to me.
So overall everything seems to be a change for the positive. I'm not sure if I got the STM hdr mic or not, though since the judgement was passed in April I'd be inclined to think they would still have decent stock a month later at least. Hopefully stock holds out! So if you've been waiting to exchange for fear of getting one with poor build quality or a camera sensor that's just as bad, maybe these observations indicate that it's safe now. I really hope so...
If there's something else you'd like to know, I'd be happy to try and compare

How did you get a replacement phone? i sent mine to htc repair in the uk for the purple camera issue and am expecting it back on tuesday. They haven't said anything so as far as i know I assume i'll have the same phone with a new sensor?
Would love a replacement seen as some edges and the screen is not totally flush! Although would hate to lose my hdr mic!
Really hope they've fixed the purple tint though - feels like i'm missing a limb without the phone and don't want to send it away again if i can help it! :good:

Yours should be fine when it's returned (hopefully). Mine was a mess when I sent it in for repair (9th March build date). When I got it back, the screen was flush, gaps were gone, overhangs were gone etc.
Camera problem will be fixed, if they give you a new sensor (august build date onwards). Anything before that seems as though the problem returns eventually.
Happy to say that after 2 months with the replacement camera sensor, being heavily used, everything is still working correctly
Hope you have as much luck as I did with the UK repair center

Hey thanks for this, settled my nerves a little! I'm impressed they sorted out all the little gaps and problems on your phone! Glad to hear its in perfect condition man :good:. The repair guy just put on the form 'camera malfunction' so i wrote next to it '(purple tinting)' i hope they've taken it into account. I also noted beside that in pen the sim card not always detected issue that has been more prevalent lately - do you think they will fix that too? Is it proven they have sorted out the issue in the new sensors?
Also, they took received my device and returned it at the end of the day the next day. How long did yours take? Is there a form telling you what they fixed or did to repair it?
Sorry for all the questions! Thanks!

I exchanged mine through best buy since I got the product exchange warrantee. It couldn't have been easier actually, I just had to take it in, let them reset it and confirm it was still purple after and they gave me a new one 10min later. I've never heard of someone having it go so smoothly through htc so perhaps it's best to go through a carrier or store if possible.
Really really really hoping the problem doesn't come back since this is a June sensor...

Unfortunately because i bought mine brand new unbranded from ebay i can't take it to a carrier... However it seems that HTC UK do a decent job of repairs and haven't seen many complaints. spikeydoo2006 has given me hope as it sounds as though he's had a great experience! I wish htc would publicly acknowledge a hardware fault in the early models so that they can confirm the problem has been fixed! I love htc phones since i've had my desire hd and one x - its disappointing to have to send my one in for repair!
Well, that didn't take long...the noise problem with the camera is back and getting worse with time just like before. Also just like before heat is causing it and making it worse. I posted pics and a more complete breakdown of these lovely new developments here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47136748#post47136748
I'm beginning to accept that there is and never will be such a thing as a "good" sensor for this camera...
Took some good damn pictures at night when I first got the phone.
Now almost every dark pictures goes to full red mode. And if having it exchanged only reports the problem for another few weeks...

I'm really puzzled and confused by all these red/purple tint issues with people's one's. Although I don't think the night shots a're exactly great, I can't get my phone to show these tints.
What I have noticed on my replacement phone, is that the beats audio letters have started to run off just weeks after getting the phone and the screen isn't quite as good as my first one.

What did you do to get yours exchanged and with who - HTC or carrier? My Sprint One is new (had it less than 2 weeks) but manufactured FA37SS906etc (July 25) and has the red problem. Posted a thread about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2514330

I always try to avoid carriers as much as possible so I got it through best buy. I also made sure to get a product replacement plan on it so I only had to show them the problem, let them do a restore, then leave 10min later with a new phone. I've been following the primary thread about this issue and most people who go through htc seen to have to wait a long time to get it back.
Read through your post, and yup, that's the problem 85% of us have. If you think it will go away it won't. Your options are to replace the phone or the sensor but I have yet to hear of someone who did this and had it fixed permanently (the new sensor also eventually failed). Who knows, maybe someday they'll make a good one...
