~9.72GB after custom rom installation - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello,
I recently installed SlimBean and still only have 9.72GB left. Can anyone else confirm that after installing a custom rom that they only have ~10GB of space left? Is this due to the way that the sd card is partitioned?

The ROM doesn't change the partition table, thus the same amount of space is allocated to firmware. There is a way to change the table to give users some of that space back, but it is difficult and dangerous to test on a device. No one has attempted modifying the s4's yet, but time will tell. Get a good external SD to make up for the lack of internal space

That's what I had suspected. Maybe we can figure out an optimized partition table when the Google Edition SGS4 comes out. Thanks.

Does this have anything to do with the fact that the bootloader is still locked? Can the partitions be changed with the current loki exploit?

I'm curious about this as well. i was looking thru the root folders and i noticed that the vendor folder reserves around 3gb of space. I'm on AOKP atm and am only using 500mb of space in the vendor folder. would love to be able to reclaim at least 2gb of the remaining space.

Hmm, so what do developers need to repartition?
Feel free not to answer... I'm just confused as to why we need the bootloader unlocked considering we have an exploit and an ability to freeze the update files.

At the moment we simply circumvent the boot loader and something along the lines of us scripting in the placement of 0's in the appropriate areas for official when the header checks kernel and recovery. You'll have to check the Loki threads for the exact specifics...just working off memory. We don't have a true unlock. We can flash yes, but we don't have the necessary permissions to change the table currently

I read your post above wrong and thought you were saying the locked boot loader was why we can't currently change it. Misread. I don't know for sure on whether you need a fully unlocked boot loader or not for this, but as stated it is certainly a difficult task

Although I'm not sure if we need our bootloader unlocked in order to repartition, I will say this - for the seasoned dev it is not a hard task, the Samsung infuse partition has been changed numerous times due to its stock partition being too small for cm10.1, as have other devices...if my understanding is correct, it requires kernel/ramdisk edits...as well as a few scripts in the Rom zip to apply the new partition
-I'm no dev, but based on what I've seen in the past...that's my conclusion

[Q] Questions about SS and my current setup

I never OTA'd to MF3. Instead I installed the Unadultered MF3 ROM that somebody put out awhile ago and retained root/recovery.
Does this mean I'm still on MDL essentially?
Would it benefit me to use Safestrap to side load different ROM's instead of flashing back and forth?

Yes it should still be MDL.
Do you still have a custom recovery? If yes, you are still on MDL.
With MF3 OTA it included the locked bootloader. This is what you don't want (and if you still have a custom recovery you don't have it, which is good).
Awesome. Thanks, guys!

Safestrap is nice for us that took the OTA update for whatever reason we did so . However when you use rom slots it absorbs your internal memory according to the size partition you create per slot . We all know how much it bugs us already to only have say 8 or 9 gigs available as is . than again it's kinda like duel boot.i can't wait till this bootloader gets hacked to h?ll.

Does anyone know why it is saying I don't have 32GB? I have a MF3 S4 and I rooted it and put safestrap on it. Then flashed a ROM.

Like Avi said, two totally different things. There was an update in May and it also blocked root and the unlock method. They were able to gain root again, but the BL is much more involved.

You can install SafeStrap and install another stock ROM on slot 1. Then, you can use Xposed to add all kinds of customization and you can flash a mod that allows init.d to allow you install init.d tweaks. Doing all of this on your safe slot will keep you from messing up your stock slot. If you get everything set up in slot 1 and it runs well, there is a way to restore it on your stock side, but I won't go into that now.

Confused on rooting

First off sorry if I have missed something but I have been doing some reading but am slightly confused.
I am looking at a Verizon Note 3 on ebay to keep unlimited data since I just sold my Note 2 which was rooted and running a custom rom which is kinda a must for me. Where I am confused is I see tutorials on how to root the note 3 but I also see a petition to have verizon unlock the bootloader. When I hear locked bootloader I think no rooting and custom roms. So did verizon just recently lock the note 3 down like they did with the note 2 4.3 update? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
Basically I just want to be able to root my Note 3 but am not worried about voiding any warranties with verizon since I'm buying it on ebay or something. Feel free to post links to this answer since I'm not opposed to reading just kinda overwhelmed right now.
Thanks for answering my stupid question and have a great weekend!!!

Oh I don't doubt it for a second!! That's why I was confused saw plenty of custom ROMs but didn't really pay attention to tw or not. Not really an issue since I've been having crazy battery draining issues on everything I put 4.4.2 on. Haven't done my research but I'm sure it won't be long till 4.4 tw hits the note 3 anyways.

What is "locked" on the retail device is the recovery and boot partitions. They are crypto-signed and verified early in the boot sequence. Until the phone is hacked, it means it is impossible to boot a non-Samsung kernel or non-Samsung recovery. Even if you intentionally blow the Warranty flag on the phone, this behavior will not change.
So, while you can root, whatever "ROM" you want to try and use must play nice with a STOCK kernel (& ramdisk). So, no CM for example.
Also - because of "version upgrade locking", if you upgrade a stock kernel (let's say MJ7 -> MJE), you might not be able to use Nandroid restores of previous ROMs you formerly used any longer... depending on how tightly the ROM depends on kernel & ramdisk behaviors.
And one more thing - the Safestrap "psuedo-recovery" actually boots the beginning of a stock ROM (or whatever you have in the "stock slot"). One consequence of this is that you no longer have a separately bootable recovery to fix up mistakes or restore backups from. If you wedge the primary OS somehow, the consequence of that will be a loss of all data on the phone which is not backed up, and a trip to Odin to restore a pure stock firmware ... and starting all over from square 1.
(If you buy a Note 3, you might want to consider a BIG removable SD card - then you will have room for media/backups/etc that is not vulnerable to an Odin flash)
So basically, you have a limited form of rooting available.

I can't say I have ever heard of anyone messing up the installation process before. It's load the apk to your SD card, install it to your phone and then tapping the install button once you open it. That's it.
As long as your root method installs busybox and your SU app disables Knox, you should be fine.

Trying to load a custom recovery on a locked bootloader could mess up your phone. Safestrap was made for our phones. Read up a bit you'll see we can't do normal custom recoveries and we can't flash normal roms cause we're locked. Only thing we can do is root and safe strap. I'll suggest odin nb1 update to nc1 root. The reason I say odin to nb1 is because right now you don't have a recovery at all due to you trying to install cwm or twrp.

Do you have an AT&T S4? If so then no. It will not load if you try. Until someone figures how to crack the locked bootloader, we are stuck with ROMs that use stock Samsung (you'll also hear them referred to as TouchWiz or TW) kernels. I believe CM uses their own custom one.
I am able to use the Google Edition one because a user modified it to work on aTouchWiz kernel, and even then things like USB file transfer does not work.
I do not believe anyone has done the same for CM.

Yes I have the at& t s4. And that sucks I was really looking forward to flashing cm 11s. I don't care for the knox being ticked off being that I'm on no contract. Odining back to NB1 will not trip Knox. Also, I believe downgrading to 4.2 will not touch your bootloader, if it were that easy we'd all be rocking CM.
You could run this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2767026
Its technically not a TW ROM, but it has its quirks. It was never intended to work on locked bootloader phones, but it has been retrofitted on to them.
Wrote this if you would like a guide on how I got 4.4.4 version up and running, it's kind of tricky.

Nb1 and nc1 are the same. Nb1 is just a small update over nb1, there isn't even a tar file for nc1 because it's such a small update. You won't be able to odin back to anything prior to nb1 unfortunately without bricking. Now I do understand the hatred of touchwiz but once you're rooted you're able to delete a lot of the garbage bloatware put on by Samsung and AT&T. This makes the phone so much better along with super long battery life. I've been able to get 4.5 hours of on screen time and about 16 - 17 hours of off the plug time like this.
When deleting bloat you can easily Google and find lists of what people have deleted off their phones using titanium backup (amazing app, let's your freeze or delete what you don't want). Also one thing I found out which is dumb. Deleting Samsung hub breaks auto rotation (what one has to do with the other I'll never know) but you can download the file needed to fix that here

Nope. Bootloader and knox are completely different. Knox will just give annoying messages once tripped. Bootloader without unlock we're pretty much dead in the water. There has been some talk about ways to possibly unlock the bootloader so it's definitely being worked on. I've also read that the black hat even (hackers convention) might have something promising. Also anything that is done on the s5 could very well apply to the s4. It's all just a matter of time
