Hi All,
So I just got an Xperia Play recently for a bargain price!, and Im loving it!
Just looking at it this way with Mario running on it, makes me feel good:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
By the way, I work at Nokia MEA, showed it to some employees here, and they were impressed! o_o
I got it because few years ago I thought about a similar form factor for a Mobile device, even designed one on my own...
So, as soon as the rumors were confirmed about the Play, I decided I MUST get one.
I wish they included a Dual-Core CPU in it, I know the current is enough for gaming, but more is better, specially for emulation.
Other than that, it is awesome...
Oh yeah, about the speaker sound quality, It is phenomenal!!! It is LOUD and CLEAR, I was amazed when I listened to some songs, they did a great job on the speaker.
One major let down is the built quality, I think its abit cheap, specially for this price tag.
Those were my thoughts about the Xperia Play for 2 days usage, can't wait to play on it more!
BR everyone!
Yea, tis a cool phone. Emulation is second to none on a mobile phone at the moment.
You should take the shipping screen protector off your phone. There is another screen protector fitted underneath.

I must agree with you, before the play my only non HTC smartphone was the Toshiba TG01, i hated it and swore i would never buy another non HTC device, when the play came out it thought **** it, and ive never regreted it, playing games on the play is awesome even compared to my friends SGS2, It's a shame sony decided to include such little ram though, im not too bothered about dual core CPU's to be honest, cause i think the quallcomm scorpion/adreno is a more than capable CPU/GPU combo, but i think with 750mb+ of ram the play would fly
I love my Play but I don't play nearly as many games as I thought I did, so I'm trading mine for an Atrix.
I ship it tomorrow. *sobs*
adb shove iPad2post.apk to /forum/thread
I love the speakers in the Play, best I've heard out of any cell phone. And I love the emulators, I love playing those old games, they really are the only ones I can keep playing over and over again. I honestly don't game a whole lot, but when I do, I absolutely love my phone. It'll be extremely hard to upgrade to a newer but keypadless phone, let me tell you.
yeah, some of the build quality isn't that great, and I really would have appreciated some more internal storage and a bump to 768MB of RAM... but even so...
I can see myself keeping this device long past the point where I have moved to another phone as my mainstay. I'll turn off the radio data, just use WiFi and play all the emulators to play my old NES, SNES, Genesis, GB/GBA, and PS1 games (I still have a couple dozen discs around as I never sold them off. I still also have dozens of cartridges around, and an old GameGear sitting around too). I certainly wouldn't mind replaying FF Tactics a couple times. Let alone Chrono Trigger and the old FFs. Maybe some Contra and such...
So this will be one of those devices that I will keep for emus and other fun long past when it is outdated otherwise.

Same here, i feel like this one WILL stay for a long time, at least until they release Xperia Play 2
;-)
I absolutly love my play yea some of the build quality is nt great but nothing else touches it or even comes close to it in terms of mobile gaming .i had to to a 3 hour train jerny so I slapped on resident evil 3 on fpse the next thing I new I was 10 mins from my destination the time flew by love the experia play
I have been noticing it has some amazing battery life to it as well. I played Chrono Trigger on it with the SNES Emulator yesterday while I was at work for about 6 hours straight, it was a dead day at work, and when I was done I still had 45% battery life left.

Game support from Android devs is not that bad either...
Gameloft alone has 17 games that support the Play controls, I'm hoping very soon the 18th game will be Order and Chaos

Wanna know the real kicker???
I sell Verizon Wireless products... Boss sold me this phone because of the higher profit margin she makes on it compared to the other devices. Got it at her cost of like $400 (since I have to provide my own phone when you have a dealer plan.)
Yeah, as you guys mentioned, the battery is damn good.
Many of my friends were impressed with it, specially gamers!! ;-)
Find this deal in slickdeals, and that is really impressive.

bought mine and got it a few dys ago, it works very well so far and doesnt get too hot
using it for productivity it works well, not doing any gaming on it
only thing that is terrible is the battery, but i am sure i can open it up and upgrade that later on
cant complain about anything really for the price
i'm a tad bit apprehensive buying from people that spell capacitive, capacitance.
LOL

Umm... they got it right.
That's a diction error, at the most. And you should be able to let that slide seeing as capacitive screen technology rely on capacitance theories.

EDIT,
I'm definitely interested. Its cheaper than buying a 5.0" tablet phone
If they ship with EMS then im all in
I just received mine and found it to be already rooted with several WiFi accounts logged in. all in all its very nice for the price. I am going to be letting my 4 year old use it so she will leave my Asus Prime and my wife's iPad alone. I am interested to see if there will be any development support for this device it uses a pretty common CPU and form-factor.

I was wondering about development too. It is really what is stopping me from picking up one.
i saw a video on youtube of the location where they develop the actual chip, can't say it instilled a lot of hope.
At worst flash a different rom and do a little cleanup and its good to go.
OK I'm 2 hours in and i have ran into a few issues. First of all the stock software is horrible. they load a bunch of weird stuff on to it before they ship them out. While my daughter was playing Bouncy Mouse it locked up the screen went non responsive and the music continued. I had to hard reset it buy long pressing the power button for 15 seconds. at that point i figured what the hell. ias soon as it came up i reset it back to its factory setting. this seems to have improved it a bit. we will see. I will keep you all posted.
that just makes me more worried, lol
maybe you'll have some luck with a different rom.
Well resetting it helped a ton. You have to more sure you don't try and over work it. I kissed mx player onto it and it plays video flawlessly. Netflix works great. I am very happy with it.

Screen protector and rubber/silicon case
Planning on getting a couple of these for my kids. That way I won't cry too hard if they do get broken!
Anyway, since they are for kids, does anyone have any idea which screen protectors and silicon/rubber cases may fit these?
Thanks!
I read that in actuality 1.5 hrs is the actual battery time, is that what you guys are getting?

I have the Samsung Ativ 500t SmartPC, which has the atom processor and is running window 8 pro. I have to say love it. I had a Sammy 7 series slate which was running win 7 and I did the upgrade. While I can say the 7 series was faster (i5 processor), I really like the 500. The atom is way better than I expected, really snappy. Having the s-pen built into the device, and a keyboard that docks similar the the Asus transformer series are really great options. Just wanted others thought etc, and just get a discussion going on this tablet. :highfive:

My Note 2 killed your phone.
I have been looking at full win 8 tablets and seriously was thinking the Ativ 500 but when I heard of some issues I kept searching. I found the Dell Latitude 10 that I have my eye on. Removable battery, full size SDXC storage, on top of what the Ativ has. The only thing lacking is the pen with it and inside the tablet. It does have a digitizer so if get a proper stylus like the s pen you can do handwriting as well.
I think they both are great, and I am torn on waiting for Bay Trail which allows more than the current 2gb memory. I am worried that the current Atom won't be able to run Polycom CMA Desktop/M100 video client.

I love my Samsung Ativ 500T. I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro and got Windows Media Center on here. Put in a 64 GB micro SD card, so I have 128 GB storage. So far its made great laptop replacement. What do you guys use to watch mkv files? I downloaded vlc player to watch mkv files. Most of them play ok but some of them just lag so bad. My phone can play any files just fine without any lag. Is there any other video app or anything I need to do to be able to watch them without any lag? Some of them are 720p and some of them are 1080p mkv files. I did factory reset and updated all the drivers on this tablet to see it that help but still no luck.

What is "CDA" and how is it used to dual boot Android? I did some basic searches and couldn't find anything about it. I'd be willing to give it a try. I love Android and on this hardware it'd be pretty cool.
Thanks,

Well I tried the incipio case I mentioned, but returned it. It fit on the body of the tablet well, but the flap had edges that are kinda sharp. Also, it has no way of locking in place when closed so it sort of flops around. Not worth imo 60 bucks. Took it back to Att. They had a Belkin portfolio case in the store for 70, however I didn't like the build quality of it. Incidentally, neither have a hole for the spen. The Att version doesn't an spen. So, right now I am using a sleeve for an 11 inch macbook air. It actually fits perfectly. I am now waiting to get a portfolio case. I sent an email to Samsung asking for a book cover case. Hopefully they will make one. I always like theirs the best.

I've had this for 2 weeks and can't get it to work or figure out how to?
Also I've had it hang up and reboot a few times or have had to hard reset it because it locked up, anyone with these experiences?
I'm thinking of taking it back unless this may be a one off machine that I should just exchange it for another.

There are currently 4 different models of the 500T and it looks like only one of them actually has NFC:
http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/samsung/53961-samsung-ativ-smart-pc-model-difference-features.html
I have the XE500T1C-A04US which means no NFC. It would be nice I suppose, but honestly I almost never use it on my phone which does have NFC.
As for cases... man there's a serious lack of options out there right now. I don't like either of the ones sold by AT&T, but those are the only ones I'm aware of at any price. Seems weird that Samsung still doesn't have anything for their own product.

Not working on Nexus 7 (2013) and Galaxy S5 (native and with GLTools).
has anyone tried it on a Tegra 3 Device? Ouya anyone?
Just ordered a Shield anyway but it won't arrive in the next 2-3 weeks. (Shipping from Hong Kong) ...
They ie.portal/half life 2 for tegra 4 are a waste of time for now on the mad catz m.o.j.o,they are not telling anyone next to the game icon on the list that they are only useable with android 4.4 kitkat, therefore i bet loads of these upcoming and current games are, also the shadowgun deadzone game i tried and says only for tegra 3 devices,it's a right @rse to list games but not tell you what they do/do not work on,bounty arms isn't working with the m.o.j.o controller either,so it does beg a big question that is why are mad catz selling the C.T.R.L as an android phone controller as a seperate item if the compatability is all but none existant in the current games, they really need to get to it and release 4.4 kitkat for the mad catz m.o.j.o and a controller compatability update to flash with software via the usb port under the batteres.
A friend of mine is supplying me with Portal from his Shied to test on the Mojo tonight. I will let you guys know if it works...I am very curious.
any chance for this to run on a non tegra device?
like the last hack made by chaineFIre wich was awesome and enabled me to run dead trigger at its full on my aging mali 400 :<
I really need to upgrade to a snaodragon 805,810 or an Nvidia K1:crying:
I really cant decide weather to get an Nvidia device or not since im in love with the galaxy note series but sadly they never come with tegra cpu's
maybe I should just get a vita and keep my n7100 for a long while since im in dire need for a gaming handheld
I wish somewhere in an alternate univers we get to see a note 4 with a k1 processor:cyclops:
but that will never happen lol

running kitkat and no luck on mali 400 gpu
so surprisingly borderlands 2 gets ported to the vita but we cant run HL2 on a snapdragon 801 ?????
hmmm seems like a driver hack should do the trick
The problem is that Nvidia worked on it and optimized it for Tegra 4.
I'm not sure whether it performs just an GPU ID check or it actually does require Tegra 4-only features/extensions.
I don't think we can get it to work on other devices without a wrapper.

Can anyone confirm if the crash is due to lack of RAM? Remember our Tegra Note 7s only come with 1 GB of RAM while the SHIELD and M.O.J.O come with 2 GB. It could be crashing because it couldn't load the entire level into memory.

Well half life 2 doesnt load maps like that. Its loads it section by sections so i seriously doubt they changed it for android to load the entire level that would require regretting alot of the engine. Online multiplayer games it will load the whole map but for the single player it did not thats why you got that loading bit while running or driving around.

Now whatever your thoughts are on gaming on a Mobil device you have to face it these devices are built for this very thing. These phones don't have all this horsepower and big beautiful screens for the internet and Facebook.
So i fire up Gta Vice city...it won't load a game, try the new one Gta Sa, and menus don't work can't save and load when in game. Tried the new Xcom Enemy Within game and graphic artifacts everywhere games completely unpayable. Over half of all the games i own don't work.
I have a brand new $700 device sitting on my counter while i have to use my nexus 5 under 4.4.4 to actually do the things i want to do! Something is wrong with this picture. Sure some of these problems will be fixed by devs over time... But who the hell knows when. Some companies have 30-40 games across multiple platforms...it could take forever (and usually does) for them to make updates...Now knowing that why does google not have a backup plan to make sure older software works on newer devices?
Why should google care about what developers make? Google rules, developers have to adapt and change the code based on Google decides to bring in each new version.

Because the developer has already made their money... The consumer is the one who is stuck with a product that doesn't work.
Let's see Google crack down then and pull every grand theft auto game from the market till rockstar updates them...But we all know that's not going to happen.
I have no issues playing GTA SA on my Nexus 6. Mine is rooted and unencrypted but otherwise stock 5.0.0. I actually am really enjoying this phone for gaming, something I've never really liked on phones before.
I'm not sure what has been done on your device so I can't give any instructions on how to fix your issue other than to not blame Google for issues with a few apps, especially when you're not using the device as completely stock/as intended by the manufacturer...

Menus become laggy after a little while of playing, cant load/save game. I checked reviews on google play many others on a nexus 6 are complaining of the same
That's weird... I've played probably 3 hours over the weekend of GTA SA and never once noticed a problem. I'll watch for issues as I continue playing it though.

Any other games you have tried? Anther one of my favs is Segas Jet Set Radio... That game would look awesome on this big screen... Doesn't even start
Any time you hit a major OS update, you run into compatibility issues at first. I knew going in that I'd run into a few quirks.
But I ran into similar issues when I first got my G3... lots of apps weren't able to cope with the increase in resolution and needed to be updated. Waze had some serious map rendering issues, for example. But it got sorted.
It's the price you pay, sometimes, to be an early adopter.
I'm downloading a couple other games and will report back (though it may not be until tomorrow when I can report back). I'm downloading the following:
Baulder's Gate Enhanced Edition
GTA Vice City
GTA III
Dungeon Hunter 4
Asphalt 8
Modern Combat 4 (older but I haven't bought the newer versions)
I notice a lot of apps aren't compatible such as dead trigger 2. I side loaded DT2 works fine. There were others as well can't remember which ones. Mostly games

Made a post about wishing Google had some form of backwards compatabilty a few weeks ago and it was kinda poo-pooed

Ah well.
Welcome to the bleeding edge, OP. Someone told me iOS is better at this if you want to go there.
welcome to a new OS, this is what happens across the board for all devices when a new OS is launched.
on windows, when you get a new OS update, not all software is prepared for it, same as everywhere else.
I personally have not had any issues with any games i have running on 5.0 and i game with a lot of big RPG's
Bards Tale is gorgeous on here BTW

Lop. You should have seen the compatibility issues on iOS 8 and developers not being ready for bigger screens. They're still having problems!

Its actually kind of funny. Google actually tried to offer solutions to this problem this time around. They released the L preview builds and early api for app developers to have everything they needed to test and build their apps to support the newest OS version. Of course very few devs used those tools to get a jump on it . . .
Yeah gaming is hit or miss...clash of clans runs wonderful but my castle clash runs barely good enough to play.
however i do have the latest software and what already appears to be awesome dev support so I hope this gets ironed out. The phone has the power the run the games even on the high res screen.
As an application developer, it would be nice to actually have the device to test on. Right now, I have to rely on the emulator for the Nexus 6. I don't make mobile games, but if their engine relied on Dalvik, you may be waiting a while for the game engine to be updated to ART (I don't think this is an issue as I've never had issues with gaming on my Nexus 7 tablet). More likely, you are dealing with an issue with resources not matching the Nexus 6 DPI... therefore, you're stuff looks out of whack, or can't click on menu items. You'll have to wait for more devs to get a hold of physical devices. The emulator is good for a lot of things... but there are somethings that are just broken for development...
Some examples I noticed
1) You have to turn off "Use host GPU" to take screenshots/record video off the emulator.... Disabling "Use host GPU" makes the emulator run like crap... takes like 5 minutes to boot on my machine.
2) Cannot rotate device anymore. With Gingerbread, you could rotate the device and test out your layout-land resources... nope, not anymore... at least not on anything >= Ice Cream Sandwich
3) HAXM... not an issue for me, but I get a lot of questions on my YouTube channel about why my emulator is smooth. I use intel processors on my computers. Many use AMD and development with the stock android emulator is a nightmare. I don't know if Genymotion fixes this for those as I haven't had an AMD processor since before Android existed as a mobile OS.
4) Freezes up randomly. Its just not as stable as a real device. Obviously this could vary on machine to machine. For some reason, my Nexus 4 emulator freezes way more frequently than my Nexus 5 emulator.
5) I store some files I need to test my app's database in Dropbox. I used to be able to download the file and run it in my program to create my database. I can't do this anymore. It works fine on my physical device, but I don't think my Note II will be getting Lollipop anytime soon. I need to test SD Card storage options and the emulator just doesn't work for this.
My Nexus 6 was promised to leave the warehouse by December 3rd... even paid overnight shipping.... still hasn't even been charged from my account. My point: Improvements will happen... we just need devices before we can fix a lot of issues with lollipop. Motorola/Google have really screwed this release up.
Thanks for the post Rufflez.
And for the person who brougt ms Windows up... That's a terrible comparison.
I have 10-15 year old games on cds that still work on win 8/7. Windows even has a comparability mode built in. Would be nice if android had the same.
This happened last year with kitkat (except wasn't as bad) and now again this year with art/5.0.
Google thinks devs are going to update all their software every year??? Isn't that expecting too much.
modern combat 5 plays absolutely incredibly on the n6! graphic would rival any console game.

This may be wrong, but I think Google likes to make software not backward compatible due to security features. In Windows, having the ability to run a software made for Windows 95 is great, but with a built-in emulator, old existing security loop hole will exist in newer version unless they patch up. What Google is doing forces all apps to change to meet the security standard so this allow Google to have more control of the apps development vs having a large QA team to release security patches similar to what Microsoft is doing on windows. Not to mention having backward compatibility (not just KitKat) will increases the size of android l os, which is not ideal on mobile device
