Pretty sure ASUS repair are morons - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I had this annoying light leak on my N7, a circle of light on my screen. I tell ASUS about it, they tell me to send the unit back to them for a new LCD.
Okay then.
I get it back today, and there's this massive light leak on the right of my screen, pressing down on that part of the screen sends ripples though the display.
I am not impressed. Looks like I'm sending my device back to them for a second time?

Hey Macmee. Where are you located? Canada? If so, shoot me a PM with your RMA number and let me see if I can look into this for you. Maybe we can find out exactly what they did.

Wow
Wasn't aware the board was viewed by the company.
Now if only I had a problem (besides social skills)

I've sent a PM with my RMA. If it helps, the light leak last time was more white and circular, this one is a large yellow stain of sorts, that looks like it's coming from the right of my screen.

That's unfortunate that you had problems with your repair. I was experiencing the screen separation on my N7 and they fixed it in about a week for me.
Its nice that someone from Asus is watching these forums IMO.

Nexus 7 defects?

How many of you are having manufacturer defects out of the box?
Had a dead pixel on mine that I picked up from GameStop
Also it seems the screen is coming up on the left like if the adhesive is giving out already.
I spoke to GameStop who referred me to play store but then play store said any warranty claims have to be done through the retailer. Obviously GameStop is out of stock but they said they were emailing corporate for me today to ask for another unit to be sent. So I should have mine replaced around Wednesday hopefully.

I got so used to amoled screens I forgot about dead pixels on LCD. Is it possible it being an LCD it might just be stuck?
Anyone ever have any success with one of those stuck pixel fix apps?
Either way I'm doing an exchange because of the screen not being recessed on left side properly. But hopefully no dead pixels on next one.

Lol. Looks like trolling but I did read in another thread a guy had issue with his screen stating to come off his I/O device. I noticed mine while I was holding it on the left side the screen was giving in and making some creaking and such. Upon closer inspection I noticed on the left side/middle area the screen was actually sitting above the frame. Everywhere else it was sitting nicely and recessed under the frame.
Anyway the risk of defects is always going to be higher with the first runs.

Download a dead pixel test app on play store. Its basically solid color backgrounds you alternate so in some cases you'll be able to see the pixel in a red background etc.

Sure...its a bit difficult to see on a picture but its basically the screen rising above the border in one area so the edge of the screen is exposed. That same area is soft as well where pressing on makes the screen move in and out with creaking. The rest of the edges are sturdy.
Dead pixel I'm not posting photo since I'm sure everyone knows what that looks like but its located on the app drawer button in portrait mode. Shows up the most in white backgrounds.

Mine has a similar issue, its on the left middle section. Whatever is holding the screen down is coming loose like the adhesive. The screen works fine but you can see the screen is raised a couple a cm or so. Makes a slight creak sound.
Might contact Asus for warranty and see how they do it or just give Gamestop some time so i can exchange it.

Bet this is going to be a known issue all around. I was able to push it down but i figure its adhesive so its eventually going to happen again and again until the adhesive isn't sticky anymore. Sad days but other than that this tablet is solid.

Well according to ifxit, they are small retaining clips that hold it so i hope its not a broken clip. I could easily put more adhesive down a it looks like it just pops up.

I really appreciate it and thank you. Now I know what to look for once my N7 arrives.
My Gamestop doesn't have any extras, calling Google to see if they can do anything. I would like to see if i can get a replacement sent out and then send this one back but we shall see.
I returned 3 transformer primes for screen defects. Asus qc isn't the greatest. It's probably why they're prices are so good for what you get.
On mine when the brightness is on the lower end the screen starts to flicker a little. I think it's software related. But once you set the brightness higher it stops doing it.
Oh and it only does that on white backgrounds like google voice search.

[Q] Is this normal?

Just recieved my Nexus 7 today and when going to turn it on, I was greeted by a fantastic grey, washed out screen. This can't be normal can it? Has anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have attached an image for people to inspect, and the only reason I am creating a new thread is because I don't think this is the same issue as the other 'screen washed out' thread. Thanks!
Oh wow. There is no easy way to say it but, no, that is not normal. It may be just that the display cable is not connected all the way or that there actually is something wrong with the screen itself. Either way though, I would RMA that. Tell Google to overnight it like the rest of them that are shipping and you want it advance RMAed.
The problems with these devices is unacceptable.

Hmm this is going to seem VERY weird, but just two seconds ago, I got up out of my chair quickly while holding the device and now the screen looks fine. What is going on with the QC with these? Would you reccomend still RMAing it? I am not even joking, I simply stood up with the device and it fixed itself.
EDIT: Well guess what. I left the device off for the duration of just writing this post and it is back to its washed out self. Looks like it's time to RMA!

Yes, definitely. Just because the problem has(or so it appears to have) fixed itself for the time being doesn't mean that the problem won't creep up or just full blown come back right out of warranty/return window. Also, if something like that got through quality control, what else could be wrong with the device? I would still RMA to be sure. Since this problem appears to be coming and going, I would try to send a picture of the problem in action to someone at Google and have them attach it to your RMA. Maybe even try to put your Google email address in there on a piece of paper or something so that they know that you indeed did take the picture because if they recieve it with no apparent problems, they will assume that you are just returning the device and charge you a 15% surcharge.

Your not the only one that has this problem looks like first batch shipments have alot defects and bugs
Thanks very much for your replies! I have used the Google Play 'contact us' page (not sure if this is the best way but it's a start!) to get this RMA going. Very annoyed at the QC on this device and this many glaring issues really doesn't give me high hopes about the replacement either.
Already sent mine back to ebuyer. Had light bleed. So annoying. Rushed them out I think.

Questions go in the Q&A section

Stuck pixel driving me nuts.

Hooray. Until today I thought everything was ok with my new tablet, but then suddently I used it a little with brightness maxed out and I noticed that I have a stuck pixel. Initially it was white, then, after running some random "stuck pixel fixer" app (the ones flashing your screen with different colours) it turned to green. So now I have a nice green pixel showing off on every blackish page. When the screen is very dim I can't really see it (that's why I didn't notice it at first), but when brightness is maxed out it's very noticeable.
I already had similar issues on my laptop, with a couple of white pixels appearing after a while I had it (not presumably out of the box, like with this one), and those luckily went away after a few days. I heard that in these cases there's not much to do about it, and I also guess that most of the tricks used with with regular LCD panels (pressing it, shooting it with pressured air, tapping it and all the funny stuff) don't apply here, since the panel is under a slab of glass. Some say that stuck pixels will eventually start working back again after some time, but I really don't know what to think.
Sending the device for repair it's not an option because 1) It's not worth it IMHO 2) I guess they won't replace a screen with a SINGLE defective pixel 3) I got it off ebay so things may get more complicated and I don't wanna stay without my tablet for the rest of my vacation.
Have your ever had similar issues on your devices? Please share yours, that will eventually make me feel a little better
Also, if you have some tricks to get rid of this stupid pixel feel free to share as well.
Damn this is driving me crazy, I'd try to ignore it but I literally can't! I keep turning on the device just in order to look at it and cringe, I think I'm going insane.
Btw, I attached a super zoomed, super blurry macro of the pixel, it's shot with my Lumia at a very close distance, sorry about the horrible quality. It should give you the idea tho...
Well, I had a dead pixel back in the day when I had PSP. It was almost in the middle of the screen and I can tell you, it was driving me insane .... but give it a week or two and you will get used to it
Now on my TF300, I have some tiny piece of dust under the screen and it kinda looks like dead pixel. Havent figured out a way to get rid of it but I dont care much about it.
I know its not much help, but theres not much you can do about it.

Does it look bright on a dark screen, like eg the app drawer? Also, a dead pixel will always be black, even on a white screen, what I have is a stuck pixel, and by stuck I mean it's stuck on a single colour regardless what the screen is showing...a dead pixel can't be fixed in any way, while a stuck one may eventually be fixed using some tricks or simply fix itself with time. If the dot isn't bright nor black then it's probably a simple speck of dust underneath the screen.

I heard directly from Asus today. They told me that for tablets and phones a single defective pixel is enough to be eligible for warranty purpose. However they told me to contact the vendor first, because the item is still under their responsibility (I bought it a week ago). The vendor told me to send them an email with a copy of the warranty certificate/product code and report of the issue, possibly with a picture. If Asus validates the instance they'll send me a courier. However I guess I'll have to wait for a while before I hear from them, because next week everything is frozen due to holidays here in Italy. Oh well, no big deal. I'll just go on and use my "flawed" device while I wait
Edit: hmm, now that I think about it...my boot loader is unlocked right now. I know that this is supposed to void my warranty, but I've already heard of people succeeding in their claim when the fault of the product was obviously hardware. This should be the case as well...what should I do about it? The Asus guy checked my serial and didn't mention anything about my bootloader apparently, so I could be fine...

I would try and send it in anyway. The 'worst' case would be they send it back without repair/replacement, but I think there's a good chance that will not happen, because the error is hardware-related as you said.

hello,
I have a stuck pixel on my padfone 2 tabstation
I still can return it within 10 days, no questions asked.
According to your experience with asus do you think i should just return it to the shop without mentionning the pixel, or try to have a replacement with a warranty (that may not apply)
My wife got me a TF300T off Craigslist for Christmas with a similar problem, I have a group of bright pixels, it is with a white background. I'm going to try and contact the seller and see if I can get info on where he bought it and see what Asus will do.
I have noticed a lack of contrast on the screen, but I'm comparing it to a DROID CHARGE witch has way to much saturation on its screen.

Well the picture is showed by that thread that i provided on another site but okay I guess.
As you can see you saw the dots but they aren't different colors and don't sparkle. The second picture is in the sunlight.
I have the same "issue" as TC, it doesn't sparkle like in the videos or pictures I've seen. The effect is very weak but perhaps it does require strong light like sun rays.

No, it's a good thing you posted pictures. It is definitely because you still have the factory plastic on the back. It really, really dulls the effect. I had the same disappointment when I first got my N4. I was actually going to post a topic about it but then my full body protector arrived and I peeled off the factory protector and applied the new one and now it sparkles beautifully. Peel that plastic off and then report back.
LOL he got a replacement phone anyway? you can just keep your charger, then you have 2! 2 usb cables are nice for a usb car charger or something
anyway, if your phone is flawless, you might be better off cancelling that replacement because what if your new phone has issues? You are unable to send the new phone back because then you will be charged again. Always that fear... then you'll have to deal with another RMA but this time you have a faulty phone in your hands.
also remove that plastic on the back as suggested.

It's like it's a dent under the screen that's only visible when light is reflected on it. And it's only visible from the side.
I'm really confused because its not really affecting the screen when it's on and dosent seem to cause any problems.
I've found a video on YouTube were a guy filmed how nexus to show how it looks.
He has he's phone up side down sp you have to look at the top off his screen on the video. It's most visible at the end of the video.
Can you guys please look at the video and after at your phones and look if you have the same problem.

Even if you don't see it, please write and let me know.
Replacement
I don't see the problem, but I'd definitely call Google and explain what's going on. I bet they will send you a replacement.

Okay. But I live in Sweden so I can't really call Google. But I will try to go to the store where I bought the phone to get a new phone.
But the thing is that I do think that many people have this but haven't noticed it. I mean, it's really hard to see. But now that I know it's there. I see it all the time when the screen is off and when the light hits the screen.

I don't know. I guess it bothers me that the screen is dented.

I have this too, top left corner, you can only see it when the light hits it at a certain angle. The thing is the screen is unaffected by it so i'm tempted just to ignore it as the rest of the phone is perfect :good:
Okay. It seems like I'm not alone at least. You haven't noticed any trouble with the phone?
