Mod-abilty of the razr M - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, my verizon contract is expiring and that means time to get a new android device! I previously had an xperia play, and I probably won't be missing it very much since it never got anything official past gingerbread. Anyways I really wanted to know is how moddable the razr is, like if I were to get on with my new contract would the current root and bootloader exploits work? I've read a little about motorola devices never having an unlocked bootloader and motorola didn't seem to be a modder friendly company. I've built some android for my xperia play, up 4.2.2 and I want to make sure whichever phone I get, I can play around with the software on it if I don't like it.
phew, what a mouthful.

The RAZR M is very mod-able. The bootloader is easily unlocked now, and it is also easy to root. However, there aren't as many roms for the RAZR M compared to other phones.
I own a RAZR M and I like it a lot, but at this point with your upgrade discount, I might recommend the Galaxy S4 if you're concerned with modding. I'm sure the bootloader will be unlocked for it very soon if not already. And I'm sure it will be rooted soon as well. And the kicker is that there will be a lot more roms for the GS4 than the RAZR M.
At this point, I like the stock software a lot since it is very close to vanilla Android AOSP. I am currently using a custom yet stock rom that has all the verizon bloatware already removed.

I would recommend the RAZR M.
Bootloader unlocked able, and you can root and mod to your hearts content.
I really appreciated the work you did in the R800x forums.

Hey cj! I also remember your work on the Play. I went with the Razr M and have had zero issues and zero regrets. It's sweet even running stock, especially after you kill the bloat

Cool, I like the roms in the development forum I might be getting one. And hi guys funny seeing you here

Only issue is internal memory its 8gb but moto has it partitioned down to 4gb unless I'm told you buy the dev edition otherwise its a great phone

No reason it would be different on the Dev edition. They're the same phone except that on one of them, fastboot oem unlock doesn't fail out...

I'm upgrading tonight. HELP!

I'm upgrading tonight and finally ditching the Droid X. I'm either getting the HTC Rezound or the Droid Razr Maxx. Both have tons of pros and cons. I need your opinions. Please help!

Maxx from a prior owner of one should of never got rid of that thing

Have you tried the rezound as well?

Yes from a friend

I went from a Droid X to a Razr Maxx... what a great phone. I can't say enough good things about it.
Is it easy to root the maxx? Or has Motorola made it a pain in the ass to deal with the bootloader?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA
I haven't used either, but from a pure hardware POV, the Rezound dominates. Dual core clocked at 1.5, better screen PPI IIRC, dual LED flash, better FFC, plus the unlockable boot loader allowing for a much larger, more active dev community. If it hasn't received official ICS yet, I believe some leaked ROMs are out there and like the Razr, it's going to get official ICS sooner rather than later.
If you're looking to rom and tweak the Rezound would probably be the better bet.
But if you're just looking for great battery life and a solid stock software build, go with the Razr Maxx.
Or you could always get a Galaxy Nexus.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I am on Verizon - the only reason I would like to root is to avoid the tether fee... would like to occasionally hook up my laptop or android tablet through the WiFi... like a large screen... Thanks - Dan
If the Razr is at all like the D3 (and newer Moto phones IIRC), tethering is blocked and even the apps don't work without first manually rewriting the radio's hex signatures. The Rezound can most likely take custom kernels and thus have native tethering.

Someone pm a mod. Atrix_Owner is hacking into accounts now.
Also, it looks like it's only unlocking just a few phones. For now.

Now you guys see that Motorola is not that bad?

i think that more devices will be added as they get updated to ics because maybe right now the locked down gb bootloaders dont work with this tool so they are putting supported bootloaders in the ics roms.
Promising news for non AT&T folks! Finally be able to use an unlocked bootloader without the ramfix step. That is if the Atrix gets ICS with this magic bootloader.
Cheers!
Well hells yeah. Wish I knew more about boot loaders. I'm sure there is probably a way to reverse engineer unofficial ports. I'm greatful and awaiting Droid x unlock. I miss customized kernals
Such a relieving news giving a new ray of hope! Hope older devices like the Defy/Defy+ gets updated soon!
1. The site says its at your carriers discretion. so if you're on VZW, forget it.
1a. Already read somewhere else that if VZW discovers your phone has been unlocked, it will be removed from their network.
2. A lot of phones are getting Kexec builds, which is better than unlocking the bootloader anyways.
They can go blow themselves for not including the original Razr, that was my first and last Motorola Device and it will get replaced at the end of the month.

Jelly Bean Update for VZW Xoom coming "Q4 2012"

The official Motorola Android Update page has been updated and it lists the VZW Xoom's Jelly Bean update as Q4 2012. It claims it'll be an upgrade to "Android 4.1.1" but I highly doubt that. I guarantee it'll be 4.1.2/JZO54K.
Owning a Verizon Xoom and a Verizon Galaxy Nexus is so frustrating from an update standpoint. Even though updates come directly from Google, Verizon's testing and approval requirement takes forever. We know Verizon had been testing the JRO03H ROM (the same 4.1.1 ROM that the WiFi-only model got) as far back as early August. Obviously they couldn't get it approved before 4.1.2 came out, so I'm sure now they're testing 4.1.2 instead. Regardless, assuming Verizon can't find anything to ***** about with the update, we should have it soon.
Once the update rolls out, I'll update the first post here with a link to the OTA file so we can all flash it manually and not have to wait.

I don't like any of the custom ROMs available for the Xoom. They are all full of customization and features that I don't need or want. Plus I get squeamish about custom kernels written by people who have little to no documentation on the hardware. The stock ROM is simple, clean, and stable. As a daily driver, it's perfect for me. Less is more.

well, your opinion is yours opinion I prefer custom ROMS over the Stock (just don't know if will keep thinking like this after I get a HTC One X). Even Brazilian Stock ROM coming with some apps very useful (like the best file manager I used, quick office HD for free...), I think Stock ROMs are too slow and don't satisfy my personal needs of development

Yeah see I am a developer in my day job so I have no interest in doing it outside of work. I have my Android devices to use them in my day-to-day life and for me, the stock ROMs work best for that.

I am with you on ROM preference, Custom ROM run out of system space and stock don't. I turn my verizon 3g into a WiFi only for a pure jb experience. When the mood hit me I use cm10 for a custom feel.
On the bright side, we are already in the fourth quarter, so it could be any day.

Any unlock news for latest Verizon update?

I updated my RAZR m to the latest release from Verizon, and since I had not unlocked my bootloader yet, I know I cannot unlock it at the moment. Even if I rsd to the original 4.1.2 I still will be unable to unlock, correct?
Is there any work being done on a new unlock? I'm relatively happy with stock for now, but once cm10.x is more stable, and motors stops updating the RAZR m, I'd like to be able to flash something cool.
Thanks,

Yeah, here's your news; the new update blocked the ability to unlock. You can't unlock, even if you downgrade, but you can still root. The unlock exploit came out in April and people were told to do it, before it was locked up. Dan also said he probably won't ever run another exploit. You can root and use SafeStrap to run older SS compatible ROMs. You're SOL for the AOSP stuff, though. Don't say you weren't warned.

If your on Verizon and got the phone through Verizon do what I did before the time runs out... call them request a replacement device go through all the trouble shooting for your "issue"( I said the ear piece speaker intermittently goes out, yet works on speakerphone thus indicating its hardware related) after trouble shooting and problems still occur you get the green light for a replacement. request that they make a note to the warehouse to send you one without the update (I said because the new update caused data drops that didn't happen prior to update)... I hated having to give up my brand new device for a "like new" one but its better then having a locked device... the CSR in the chat said all devices in the warehouse will be updated 2-3 weeks after the update push so... act fast you may still have time left... if you get one with the update call them tell them your phone is working fine now and send the replacement back... or say something like the replacement is defective and again request a note to the warehouse... where there's a will there's a way....good luck

Not feeling like doing that. And i am not a Verizon user, I am with T-Mobile on the RDS/RadioComm Mod.
So I am just gonna suck it up and use it on stock, nothing wrong with it it works i like it. (Bugs me a little bit that i f up =( )
Next phone will be a stock Unlocked Phone so i don't have to worry about this, Been eyeing the HTC one Mini.
Or the Razr I. We will see... too many projects at the moment not enough money to buy a new phone.

Dual Booting ROMs

I came across this thread while browsing around and was wondering if it might possibly work on our phones? I'm not very trigger happy when it comes to flashing ROMs because this is my main phone with high uptime required so can't really try it out myself but maybe one of our more adventurous users could try it out and post feedback?
It works not only on Samsung Galaxy S4 but on some LG phones as well since it's Qualcomm specific so possibly might work on our phones as well

Seems to me it's kind of like safestrap. You could have multiple Roms installed with it and switch between them anytime.
