S4 Screen cracked in front jeans pocket! Galaxy S4 is very weak! - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been so careful with my S4, never dropped it. Looking after it. Today I put my phone in my front jeans pocket like always. Got in the car and after a 5 minute drive got out and the screen is showing funny colors and its cracked ;(
I have had many phones in this front jeans pocket (They all lived) and somehow a slight bend has done this. Very weak, if you ask me we are going to see a lot of this as it seems the phone is not the strongest at all. Time for a unibody HTC I think. I've had it with Samsung's plastic crap.
My phone will be up on ebay if anyone wants an i9500 for spares.
Edit: The gorilla glass is fine, its the amloed behind that cracked.

you must of sat on it or something because mine is always in my front pocket (screen facing my leg) and no problem..

As you see the glass didnt break... so it is definitly a thing to worry about...

It was in my front pocket, that is all. I did not sit on it. Many phones have lived in my front pocket. My S4 did not like it. Yes its my fault of course. Just saying that in my experience its weak! Very weak. Infact this is the first phone I have broken ever.
Yes im mad...Just saying this phone is weak. I'm no HTC fanboy, just going to get a unibody that will survive front jeans pocket better than this.
And its very strange that the glass did not break. Just the top of the amoled.

My point exactly, should not have broken. But did. Its weak, or my S4 had a weakness of sorts. 799 usd down the drain....

Call samsung and your cell phone carrier and see what they can do. Google for replacement parts and fix it yourself. Also should always get a protector case for this multi hundred dollor phones. If you can spend $200-$600 for a phone spending $50 for case is nothing. Wish you luck.

This should be covered under warranty imo, assumung there are no marks or damage caused by dropping the phone or something similar. Call a repair centre and turn it in for warranty repair, i think they will cover it.

This has happened a few times now to people on here and is clearly an issue with this phone. The phone glass screen cracking is one thing. The Amoled itself without the glass being damaged is something else and a clear design fault. I'd be f*****g livid if this happened to mine and would expect a replacement or at least a repair.

I searched around and yep. It seems i'm not the only one. The phones amoled can crack that easy has to be a design flaw. I'm thinking maybe it was heat changes too? But my front pocket, come on. Its BS. I will call Samsung tomorrow and see what they can do. I hope this has a happy ending.

Mine did this too, but i didn't even sit down, put it in my pocket after getting out of the car walked into the house took it back out my pocket, cracked amoled, glass undamaged!

How many have to report this before people start taking it serious and start to believe there just might be a build/quality issue!!

Let us know your results good luck! Think you might have issues proving it is design fault and you didn't drop it etc (i do belive you but these companies are A holes)

Ouch so Samsung will not fix it! I will see what they say tomorrow. Its clearly a design fault. Because I have had many phones in my jeans front pocket and no issues till know. Its stupid that this happened. Hopefully Samsung will do something about this! Did you manage to recovery your files of the phone?
Edit: Maybe its the heat in our pocket that made the screen crack. I did have it glass facing my leg like always come to think of it.

Almost all reports of the LCD cracking have been caused by stress with quite a few people mentioning "pockets." It's pretty clear the SGS4 because of its thinness and near bezel-less display is more prone to stress damage than the SGS3 was. But since Samsung never published a stress guarantee for the SGS3 or said the SGS4 would be better or worse people with damaged panels have acted as scouts warning others about stressing the SGS4. I'd be shocked if any of these cracked panels were repaired under warranty and if they are it would be considered goodwill. So with what's known either don't subject the SGS4 to stress or buy another phone if it's a concern. Samsung's not going to change the design or repair damaged displays carte blanche because it's too hard to tell what's been caused by user damage and what's a stress crack which, in a way, could be considered user damage also (it didn't crack by itself ). And with no implied durability guarantees from Samsung it’s going to be awfully hard fighting them as what’s “weak” or “strong” isn’t defined so everyone’s expectations are just that; expectations. I'm sure this isn't what people want to hear but it's pretty much the state of the union.

Mine is always in my pocket and my jeans are not that loose wt all. I wear a tight fit

Also had over a dozen phones over a dozen yrs and never ever broken one before!
Used kies to back up the phone, as it still starts up fine

I will just have to be very careful with my S4

Screen cracked when in pocket

Hello All,
Took my S3 out of my pocket today and noticed that the screen has a crack all the way from the bottom left corner to the home button (picture attached). I have had my S3 for about two weeks now and am really disappointed with the quality of the product. I always keep the screen facing inwards towards my leg so am really at a loss as to how I managed to crack it.
I bought the phone from Amazon UK and am wondering if I can get a replacement stating manufacturing defect or should I contact Samsung directly.
Any ideas?
TIA.
Ouch feel sorry for you mate. No insurance I take it?
If you can prove it was a defect you have a good leg to stand on. They might realize if they can't find and marks or impact points. Good Luck as you will need it..

You can always try to get it replaced but I think the chance will be small they will replace the phone as it is cracked, they will definitely blame it on force from outside. Are there more phones cracked this easily as you described it that you are aware of?
Sorry to hear you cracked the screen, imo the phone is quite strong, mine dropped by accident from three feet high without any damage. But that doesn't get you anywhere, I know that...
Now I look at the cracked screen it looks like something pressured the left side of the home button strongly.
Verstuurd van mijn GT-I9300 met Tapatalk
Sometimes this just seems to happen. I've only seen one other person who had this happen with a Galaxy S3, but I've heard stories like this since the Nexus One came out.
I'm guessing some devices just happen to have structural integrity problems with their glass, I don't really know if much can be done because of how extremely rare it is.
You should have got insurance or been.more careful. It is **** when this happens buddy.
They (Samsung/amazon) will not exchange it for any reason as it will be seen as damaged caused in your possession and that when it was sold there were no cracks or anything.
I work for a phone retailer and deal with this kind of thing at least once a week.
Try protect your bubble or something like that , then make a claim.
Hope you get it sorted.

It looks like the glass underneath the home button is not very thick only a few mm, and looks to be the weakest point on the phone screen, see how it`s broken on the bottom left corner of the home button.
John.
Nope, no insurance unfortunately. Forgot to mention that the phone was protected by a gel tpu case...
Really bummed!
wow that sucks... feel your pain.. every time I read a post like this, the more afraid I am of getting this phone..
I've sent stuff back to Amazon within the 30 days they have for returns that were broken. Just stated return under poor quality, faulty and they just asked if I wanted another or a refund. Not £500, under a ton. But they are pretty good with returns.
Don't bother with Samsung.. they are a waste of time. Contact Amazon.
Funny thing is I`ve been not only reading, but also hearing lots of reports about the fragility of the S3. Bad thing is that I got mine last week. I am being extra careful with it.
I wonder if Samsung realizes they have delivered such a fragile product.
I've also heard that. But here's some sort of consolidation I have had 4 people come back into my shop with cracked screens on their HTC one x's, some claiming it just happened , others that they pressed hard on the screen etc. (Regardless how it happened the screen is still cracked)
Some had insurance (so only insurance excess to pay) and the others who didn't, HTC only charged them 79.99 for either a replacement phone or the screen fixed. ( which in my experience in a new £500 expensive smart phone is amazing)
So there you have it. **** happens. No phone is perfect and mistakes happen.

Thank you all for your replies.
I contacted Amazon today and they were quite open to doing a refund/replacement. I went for a replacement as I am quite happy with the phone overall. Glad I bought the phone through Amazon.
Will most definitely get insurance on this puppy second time around!
Great news man. You are one lucky fella.

the screen is still working i take it... no reason why you couldnt still have taken insurance out and just claimed in a few weeks? but hey ho... good news amazon replacing for free i suppose:good:
I too would do an Amazon return/exchange. You can do it through their site and never even have to talk to someone. I think you'll be fine as it doesn't look like it was dropped.

I did not drop the phone thankfully. And it was not like I was wearing tight skinny jeans or sumthin, the phone had plenty of room to breathe in the pocket but somehow I still managed to crack the screen. I have had a Nexus One for 3 years and I was able to keep that crack free without a problem. I understand that it is one of those things but I am not feeling the quality love from Samsung on this one.
maybe it was a bump from human traffic etc etc that you might not have noticed?
since you already said your pocket has lots of breathing room, the only time that pocket is going to be tight is when you're sitting down. i don't think the pressure from that would be enough.
Gorilla glass or not it looks like the GS 3 has extremely fragile glass on the front. I have dropped both my nexus one and my sensational xl a couple of times without problem. Neither of those devices had gorilla glass! Also several users in my country even reported cracks on the plastic back cover. This comes as a shock considering the first 2 galaxy s devices are well known for their toughness. why this sudden regression in durability?
Just a postive side, i have nothing but great things to say about the make of the phone.
I, though it sucks to say....have dropped my sexy Gs3 6 times already(this is a first for anyone phone i have owned) the silver bumper is completely ate up, looks like i dragged the edges of the phone the concrete ALOT...lol
but the Glass after all six drops.....FLAWLESS, no scratches no cracks. and all six were from waist up. lucky or not, i am impressed to say the least.

Nexus 4: How's that glass back holding up?

For people who have the Nexus 4, I'm wondering how that glass back is holding up?
The review unit at The Verge already has a small crack, from when it was accidentally knocked off of a table. And Android Central, in their review, said they were already seeing hairlines scratches on the back. I was also in a T-Mobile store today looking at their demo unit, which had a few hairline scratches on the back (even though they just got the phone today).
The glass back is one part of the build of the phone that I a bit worried about in the long run (after all, it didn't work out so well on the iPhone 4).
Thanks for any comments.
This should be in Q&A thread.
Apparently one of the people on this forum that got the device early, dropped it and the back broke
omigosh, maybe I'll just wait for the next Nexus.
Ouch.... I ordered screen protector for front and back, and a soft case but they won't come until later this month.
I guess I will have to stick with my old g2 for a while?
Why is everyone so worried about the BACK glass breaking? If I dropped the phone I'd be a whole lot more concerned over the front SCREEN breaking. The glass on the back cracking would be annoying, but it won't hurt the function of the phone. The front breaking obviously would, and every single smartphone has a glass screen.

if it breaks just get a case or skin for it lol
I'm curious how well it'd hold up with a Zagg Invisi-Shield on it...if it would still crack simply from shock or not. Either way, i'll still get a bumper case for the phone simply out of paranoia, lol. I drop my phones like crazy. It's amazing how crazy I am over gadgets and protecting them, yet they still seem to slip from my desk/car/hand
I think i'm going to give this phone 2 months before I invest any money into it. I'd rather play it smart and wait than to be "cool" because I was the first to get one (which honestly, nobody really gives a **** about, lol). I had friends who were all "hey, hey look. I got the new 'insertnewphonehere'. I'm one of the first people to get one" and everyone else was like "......um, ok. You want a prize or something?" lol

Yes, every single smartphone does have a glass screen, which is why there would be no point asking this question about any particular phone. It's a necessity and it's not a reason one is going to choose one phone over another.
But there's no reason the back of the Nexus 4 has to be glass, so it is relevant to consider how durable it's going to be when comparing it to other phones. Why effectively double a risk (of a glass part breaking), if it's not necessary?
It's also possible that the back of the Nexus 4 is not as durable as the typical screen. It is interesting that all of the stories of breaking and scratches, so far, are on the back phone.
thing is ..its simple... google heard all of last year how samsung screwed up the build quality of nexus with plastic..so they thought what material while cheap can provide a lil if not lot more premium feel...(the 4s pops into their head)..lg presents a similar phone..and voila nexus 4 is made.. im not saying its bad quality..to be honest its the best quality phone im gonna buy...

Holy, Deja Vu. I swear I saw this post somewhere before. Maybe I was dreaming of you...
Anyways. Screen protectors won't hold the phone together from a drop. A case will. I'm getting a bumper.
Personally I love the glass back. I will not drop this phone and I will be using a case like I do with any expensive smart phone..
Sure, drop it onto a stone, cement or tile floor chances are it will crack. Many phones would.

I'm gonna leave the orgional plastic on it until the BSE total body protector and my case from china comes in.
Bumper on it. Sides protected, weak points of the glass that is. Done
Why care about the glass breaking at all? There will surely be OEM back plates available for sale on eBay (just as there are for the iPhones) and seeing how easy the Nexus 4 is to take apart, you could just replace it yourself for $20-$30!
Although the Nexus 4 back plate may be a little more expensive as it actually has components on it...

Yeah, I imagine something like this was the logic. And it is a nice phone. Defintely a step up in at least perceived build quality. But there are certainly a lot of other ways to get there. The rubbery matte material on the side of the phone has a nice feel to it. If the back had been made from that material, I think it would have had an equally premium feel and seemed a lot more durable. It's also a little sad to think that the best idea Google had was to copy the iPhone.

Cracked and scratched on day 1 (even with review units) is not a good beginning. I suspect it's only a matter of time until we start seeing the image of shattered backs posted online. I hope I turn out to be wrong.

The back of the iPhone 4 is Gorilla Glass too. It didn't stop backs from shattering. Anyway, the point is that there is no reason to take the extra risk of having not just the screen as a fragile component, but also the back. It just doubles the odds of shattering something for no good reason. Sooner or later most people drop their phones. The job of a good designer is to mitigate (not enhance) the possible downsides of this.
*
By the way, I like this phone. I may still get one. I'm just not excited about having to treat something I carry with me everywhere, like a delicate piece of equipment. I'm not clumsy. I've only dropped my Nexus One a couple times in two years. But things like that happen when you're least expecting it and coming up with a shattered back, rather than a nick or dent is going to be really annoying. (And I hate cases and all that crap. I carry my phone in my pocket. I don't need to make a device designed to be as thin and pocketable as possible, thicker and more cumbersome.)

Is the S 4 too weak?

I just pulled the S4 out of my trouser pocket (front) and the screen has been broken. :crying:
It did not drop or so but I went some kilometers in the car and it got some tension in the pocket Apparently the plastic chassis is rather soft and could not save the screen enough.
Can you show some pictures

Here you are. You can see the crack only when you look very closely. Don't know how to photograph this. When the screen is off you don't see nothing.
Id say it is a bit weak, Ive cracked my front glass (digitiser is fine) between the home button across the menu touch to the side. Ok I dropped it from 4 feet onto concrete but I dropped my S2 about a hundred times before the screen gave. It (S4) is still fully functioning so doesn't bother me, It was the second drop- the first just dented and chipped the chrome effect plastic surround bezel that really should be made of titanium on this phone as its so light and fragile.
I wont swap it on insurance exchange until I break it proper and it is unusable, Orange UK are very good with insurance, £25 admin fee and courier swap the next day.
Ive only had it 2 weeks !

Buy rigid screen covering cases, pockets aren't safe they're either tight and exert pressure or they're loose and bang about, the phone is worth a lot of money and deserves protecting.

That's a cracked amoled and not the glass, which explains why you can't see anything with the screen off.
If you've ever seen an s3 / s4 amoled you'd know exactly how thin and fragile they are. Best way to explain it is like an egg shell. It breaks to bits when any pressure is exerted on it.
So it seems that pressure from your trousers has flexed the body and cracked the inner amoled screen.

Thank you for your reply. It might be that there were some keys in my pocket when I had to carry some heavy stuff around.
Now I learned how fragile it is the hard way. I just hate those flip cover cases but it is "highly recommended" apparently.
I purchased the unit two weeks ago. I will see how nice the return policy is.
Your not alone Tricki There are at least 3 other threads with the same reports of the S4 breaking in pockets!
Mine broke in my pocket also!
To all these people saying there must be more to this story, mine was taken out of my car mount, put in my front right empty pocket (screen towards leg) after I got out of my car, I walked into my house took the phone back out of my pocket to discover the LCD had cracked! No physical damage anywhere on the outside of the phone, digitiser completely fine! Phone has never been dropped and hasn't been knocked on anything! Every other phone I have ever owned well over a dozen, over even more years has survived being carried like this!
To say the Amoled is very thin and fragile in the S4 is an understatement!
This is not new. Happend to the Galaxy S3 as well: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/777720?start=0&tstart=0
Pro tip of the day, dont leave your phone in the pocket when you are sitting somewhere.
Phones are suitable for pockets but not sitting on them...

Thank you - but I don't sit on my front pockets. Anyway I thought a "Life Companion" would be a bit more durable

Actually, your report made me think about amoled displays. If they have this type of weakness, it makes them really fragile compared to LCD displays.
Also, my tip was meant to be general. I sometimes forget my phone on the pocket but I usually tend to take it out before sitting. Your report makes me think about this even more.
I wonder if this happens on other non-oled devices.
And one more thing, just because your pocket is on the front does not mean that a phone does not slide to the side.
Never heard of problems like this from the S2. I used to have one. I never took special care about it. It just worked fine and survived some drops.
I think a phone should survive some stress. Perhaps it is just the combination of size and plastic chassis.with the Galaxis which followed the S2.

[Q] 1 week old, Hairline crack, Probably no coverage?

So I upgraded from my Galaxy S3 to my new S4 with Telus last week.
Yesterday night I was sitting down playing with my phone. I put it in my front pocket, and then took it back out less than 30 seconds later, while still sitting. I keep my phone in an otterbox, with screen protector, and keep nothing else in the pocket I keep my phone.
When I took my phone out, I noticed the display wasn't working. Sounds, etc were fine. After careful examination I noticed 2 small hairline cracks, one from the top middle, going down/left to the side, and another from the left/middle, going towards the other crack - however there is a large space in between where it is not cracked.
The cracks are NOT on the outside plastic piece, nor on the screen protector. They are on the inside screen only. There is some pixelization on the "top" area past the crack, and solid black/not working on the bottom. Never dropped this phone, put any excessive stress/pressure on it - absolutely blows my mind how this could happen.
So I went to Telus today to speak to them, they looked at it and the sales lady confirmed theres no impact marks on front/back and it just seems strange. The manager told me if they sent it away it would be 99% chance not covered under warranty and I would have to pay. He told me my best chance of anything, is to call Samsung. I left more than unimpressed.
So I call Samsung this afternoon. I tell them exactly what happened, draw the scenario out clearly - He tells me physical damage is not covered under warranty and screens do not break themselves. I tell him I agree, but there was no negligence on my part and I feel this must be a defect of some sort. He tells me he has never heard of this happening before and there is nothing he can do for me. I tell him we are are a wall and not understanding each other and ask to speak to a supervisor. Supervisor tells me the best they can do is give me a USP parcel to send my phone in to get looked at. If it's determined if it's physical damage, then I will have to pay to get it fixed and they will send me a quote and the phone back, if it's a defect of some sort they will cover it.
Just by the language that was used in the conversation (IE: Physical Damage, not covered) I don't have very high hopes on this matter. I understand it's physical damage, but that is very broad language. It's not physical damage due to negligence, but can this be proved one way or another? If only the screen shows a hairline crack, but nothing else - could this be my fault? If they do tell me it's not covered and I am to pay - What more can I do? Aside trying to fight Samsung in court over this (High cost, time, chance loosing and paying more), what are my options? Has anyone ever seen this happen before?
I'll upload some pictures in awhile.
Edit: Wow i'm not the only one, this guy wanst using a case though but still! I had an otter box on mine.
TL;DR - Screen broke, never dropped it or used carelessly, Telus won't do anything. Good chance Samsung wont cover it. What do
I had the same issue with my s3 that was in a Otterbox defender... Tmobile and Samsung told me the same thing and I was very disappointed...
The cracks wasn't even visible outside the Otterbox

And the pictures...
Could the otterbox be putting compression stress on the phone edges?

I've noticed this device doesn't seem very sturdy. I wouldn't suggest trying this, but if you just hold each end long-ways and give your hands a slight twist it seems it's very flimsy. I don't doubt the gorilla glass 3 is strong as balls but the underlying screen isn't, which is what seems to be cracking a lot.
I think samsung made the phone so thin and poor choice of plastic grade that it can't withstand some normal wear and tear very easily. Had samsung choice an extremely tough plastic compound it may be a different story. Ever seen the plastics used on R/C cars? That stuff is tougher than nails! But hey, at least your screen won't get scratched!

I was thinking the same thing since my phone was never dropped or anything like that... In my case I would have never noticed my cracking if I didn't clean it

I'm not sure about the otterbox case putting unnesseary stress on the phone or not. I dug up a few threads on here related to simmilar problems with the S4 - Others have had "pockets breaking AMOLED's" have NOT had a case on their phone.
Tough to say. I guess the case helps from impact damage such as a fall, but the AMOLED screen is still too fragile from flexing, case or no case.

Screen cracks for no reason!

An hour ago, I was using my phone, surfing the web.
While I was scrolling down, a sudden crack sound appeared, I was shocked.
I saw a big crack! It starts from the top of the phone, near the earpiece!
Then I immediately went to the nearest Sony Authorised Seller. All they said was "your dropped the phone, so the warranty is not covered. " and they were acting very bad and arrogant. Moreover, I am told that I have to pay RM1150 / $350 to get the LCD changed!
I'm just a college student and don't have such a huge amount of money!
What should I do? I did a search and found our that I'm not the only one that has similar problem!
Just see links posted by wookie bear

Its a real shame that a oem like sony is not accepting the fact ....
U should them on fb or twitter wid the given linkz
Ask them a simple question. If it was dropped. Where is the impact mark ? Does it correspond with the crack ?

Funny how every forum for every phone I've owned recently has had claims of screens cracking for "no reason."

Oh! I didn't know that every watch with that design is called Rolex! Thank you for telling me that!
tbh it could have been the pockets of your jeans. Early days when the Z was launched, a guy posted that the front screen cracked (exactly like yours, the top ear speaker), cause it was caught in between something.
therefore, the top ear speaker and the bottom mic needs to be protected at all times.
solution 1: use a case and cover it.
solution 2: no case, but when youre putting it in your pockets try having the front screen facing outwards of your pocket. So when you slide your phone in, it would not hit the metal part button that most jeans has.

That would be my 2nd option.
Now after a strong argument with Sony Service Centre, they say they would like to take my phone for investigation.
Not sure if they'll repair it under warranty though. I'm worried that they would say some stupid excuses and refuse to repair it under the warranty.

solution 2 is the worst you could tell... with the screen outwards of the pocket you can easily damage your phone like knocking in a little corner with the pocket where is the phone

And ridiculous. Sony claim the phone to be very solid and durable. However, many people are facing the same problem, which the screen cracks without any sort of torture or damage. It's clearly a manufacture defect but Sony wouldn't simply admit. I pay so much money for that and I have to take care of it like taking care of a baby, until every little details can't be missed. Seriously? Sony?

As you said, videos, it can be edited or what, we don't know.
The defect of Z is clearly the worst ever, the display, one of the most expensive parts of the device!

I meant it may have weakened the screen by placing the phone inwards like that. Things don't just crack, obviously there is a reason behind it. Or could be a sudden change in temperature?
Placing your phone inwards is technically warming up the front screen, dont tell me it does cause it does. >.> and chances of you scraping the speakr and mic against the metal buttons near the pockets are high.

No dude, you have no idea how many people cracked their screen by placing the phone face in into their pockets. Search around and you'll realize how easy it is to crack it just by placing in like that.
There are flaws in every design, every product, everything. Dont expect things to work properly or as it should. Chances of you getting a non defected piece of technology is really low.
And like i stated, there are many reasons to cause a piece of glass to crack.
Ive been using my z without a case since it was launched and its still working fine. No cracks, never dropped it. Nothing. Im in a worst place than you are, my Z is from oversea, technically speaking it will be a hassle for me to send it to Sony. In fact, all my sony phones are and ive never seen any of them cracked before. Im not accusing of how you treat your phones, but dont jump to conclusions and blame it on Sony right away. and I DONT WORK FOR SONY. pce!
