ASUS Taichi 21 - Windows 8 General

Hey guys, just wanted to share with you that I picked up the ASUS Taichi 21 for $1,497.00 + tax even though it seems a bit steam, but its a great machine
256GB SSD / i7 / 4gb / IPS so not too bad. Comes with a nice slip-in case, vga adapter, stylus, usb modem.
Great computer for anyone whos interested in a new device that doubles as a small laptop + tablet.
The fact that it has TWO screens, makes it very cool And I figured for that price, im getting two devices, but thats just in my head lol

I just picked this one up also .I got mine from dealfisher.com for $1049 w free shipping and no tax. Love it.

[Q] Apple or Not?

hey epic users! i have a question not completely about my epic 4g but related. In a month or so i will be in the market for a new laptop. so my questions is should i go windows or mac? im asking in this forum because i love modding/theaming/flashing and so on to my epic. i spend a lot of time on these forums and on my epic as im sure mostly everyone here does.
so i figured a lot of people in this forum are tech savvy and would be able to give good informative opinions and insight to which way i should go.
i would use my laptop for all media purposes. music/movies and of course my epic 4g.
so any feed back about what others prefer, windows or mac, and why would be awesome and would definitely help me make an educated decision on which computer to buy.
thank you very much.

the same applies to the Android vs Iphone idea.
Most, well 97% of us that are on here for our android phones use systems that are either windows or linux.
You'll have a easier time with a windows if your reaaally into your Epic. I own a Macbook Pro (1yr old) and I love my windows better since, you can do more =)

What he said. If you're that interested into your phone, a PC makes things MUCH easier. But, having a Macbook Pro, you do experience better speed on your computer and don't have to get any virus protection lol. Macs also don't require drivers, which is nice.
Basically, if you're already rooted and know what you're doing, get a Mac. Because after you root, you can pretty much do everything on a PC on the Mac. The only thing you can't do is use Odin, so if you're phone gets bricked, you'll have to rely on a friend's PC.
It's your choice though. I'd go to Best Buy or something and test out both computers; see which one you like more.
Macs: Aluminum case, fairly thin, good battery life, OS X, pretty.
Non-Macs: Many equally well-built, many thing, many with good battery life, Hackintosh, looks are subjective. Often literally less than a third of the price of comparable Macs.
If you want a high-end Macbook Pro, you will pay $3,000. A comparable Windows notebook will run you $1,000. Really.
Also, Macs do require drivers - what they do support is often built-in, but by no means always - and they are no faster than Windows machines. If your malware protection uses has that bad of a resource drain... you need different protection! Windows Firewall + NOD32 = win. And keep in mind Macs still don't properly support TRIM, so forget lasting performance on an SSD.
I wouldn't exactly put it at 3x the price but macbooks definitely cost 2x the price of a pc for the same hardware..
I will tell you this, don't buy HP, if you buy a Dell make sure to get 2 years inhome warranty minimum...their inhome warranty works really well..they come and fix it next day..
If you are looking for good quality hardware..ASUS is the best..followed by probably Toshiba...
To note, ASUS netbooks are sub par but their laptops are top of the line in terms of quality...
IF your looking for media purposes though you may want to get one of the new laptops that will come out this month with the AMD LLANO APU..its effectivly a CPU with a merged GPU thus gives better battery life, less heat and slimmer designs.

2.273x the price. You gain some screen resolution, .2ghz (who cares), battery life (moot point, swappable on the HP), and OS X (Hackintosh, $30 or free) with the Mac. There are regularly coupon codes on the HP and similar that bring it down to $899 or less - and note the HP has 2gb more RAM, a larger/faster HDD, and a video card that isn't **** on a plate.
With coupon, that's 2.77x. Apple tax?

Thats not a fair comparison though,..if I add the .2ghz option on the hp it adds 150$ to the price..the comparison is for same hardware..
Also macbook has a:
Intel GMA 3000 + AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB GDDR5
So total is 1,274.99 for the HP to match the specs.. and apple is $2,499.00..which is half price..then usually you can get a 150$ off in coupons...
I dont see whether the ram is 1333mhz on the HP model but yes you get 2gb more..HD seems the same to me though...
By average though I'd still say its more like 2x more...either way must we really argue whether or not when Apple rips you off and takes all your cloth whether they steal your underwear too or not...they are overpriced either way >.> lol
--------------
PS..NEVER BUY LAPTOPS FROM BEST BUY.. whenever something is on "Sale" they raise the price rather then lower it >.>
The laptop that I got was this:
ASUS
17" 1080p FHD LED screen
Core i7 720qm
8gb 1333mhz ram
500gb hard drive 7200rpm
dvd rw +/-
ATI 5870 GPU
a/b/g/n + bluetooth
2 year warranty
$1250..and this was a year ago in feb 2010 >.> lol..it was an unbeatable price..heck 1 year later the laptop is still worth its value..
(at the time these ram chips cost 500$ by themselves..it was suppose to be 1066mhz but they gave some pple 1333mhz due to lack of 1066mhz supply)
Only laptop that matched my specs back then was the Alienware which cost 2800$

Minus some RAM, the MSI GX740 matched you (except screen res 1680x1050). Bit more expensive at $1,400 or so. I got it free because MSI blew my GT725 to **** when I sent it in for a DC jack warranty repair. Packing the same specs, except I've got a Blu-Ray/DVD+-RW combo drive held over from my GT725, and I've now got a 256gb Vertex 2 SSD in there, with an optical bay hard drive caddy for the HD.

I was actually also looking at the time I was also looking at the MSI GX740 but it wasn't out yet..that said I kinda was iffy about MSI cause I bought their first laptop and it burned out pretty badly (yeah I know my fault I shouldnt have bought a companies first)...couldn't resist due to the specs were really good for the time :/ (Your lucky..MSI screwed me badly on the warranty..they took 2 month to repair it and when they sent it back it was still damaged and they didnt wanna take it back cause it was already out of warranty WTF >.>)
Your ram is 1066mhz or 1333mhz?
The option to upgrade to bluray was around 50$ more but I didnt care for bluray at the time..there was also an option for a 2nd 500mb hd (The pc has dual bays).but I figured Id save the 2nd bay for an SSD..though after I bought the laptop it ran everything so fast I never actually bought the SSD lol >.>
I really lucked out cause I saw it at the cheapest price when it was on sale on newegg..every hour they raised the price by $100..it stopped at 1700$ and went out of stock for like a month..
I believe it's 1066, I'd have to look again. As far as warranty goes, yeah, they do that. They really tried to screw me, but I just wasn't having it. I escalated as far up their chain of command as far as I could go, and put the BBB on the case. I made it exceedingly clear that I wanted a brand new replacement, and... I'm typing on it right now. I need to send it in for some work, pretty much just cosmetic at this point (stress cracks in the plastic around the hinges; the hinges themselves are still nice and tight).
You won't be worrying about graphics cards on osx anyway unless your a 3d designer or something. Few games.

+1 Been running OSX86 for years, works great. Just recently got a newer Clevo x7200 (look it up, a true beast) that's running Raid 0 for the 1.5tb Win7 partition, plus Ubuntu + OSX 10.6.6 on a 500gb drive. You'll definitely save cash going PC and installing OSX on it anyways, although that's not why I did it. Apple doesn't make a machine as powerful as the x7200

I had to send in my Main gt627 because of cracks around the hinges, which actually caused the screen to almost come off. The replacement case has the same issue, so I'm very weary about their build quality even though I'm drooling over the upcoming gt780R.

I'm ordering a new 27" 3.4GHz quad-core i7 imac w/ a 2gb Radeon graphics card on Monday. I'm going to upgrade the ram to 16gb and add a second SSD to it myself once they upgrade it to support TRIM. This years refresh of the imac really is quite impressive. Mostly just gonna use it for porn with a little video editing and compositing thrown in for good measure. I got a buddy at Apple that's gonna hook me up with a little discount which is cool. I'm surprised at the lack of Apple bashing so far. I'm not a fanboy at all and own a low end desktop PC and a 10" netbook as well. I really like Mac products due to the more seamless workflows you can get away with vs their PC counterparts. Their products, especially their desktops are a bit overpriced but they make damn good products. I love their laptops as they feel much more personal than any other laptop that I have used.
If I were you, I would find the most reliable Apple alternative w/ identical or better specs to whatever you're looking at in the Apple realm, compare prices and buy whichever costs less. You can get OSX on most high end laptops regardless of manufacturer. If you don't care about OS X, buy a PC.

For desktops its better to custom build it...its not that hard and you can put together a pc for 50%-75% of the price of dell/hp etc...I mean I can easily put together a top end desktop pc for under $1k...I built a top end pc for my friend in sept 2009 for 850$ top end...
here is what I built:
motherboard = 165.18 - MSI Intel x58
cpu=257.19 - core i7 920
ram=69.28 - 3gb ocz 1866mhz ram
hd=74.25 - 1TB WD
dvdburner=22.61
case=74.09 - Thermaltake case
psu=44.29 - OCZ 700watt modular
GPU=140.00 - ATI 4890
------------
total: 846.89
Keep in mind I was not buying on a deal as he needed it fast...

Acer Iconia W700

Does anyone have one?
I can't see any new info on it on the net. I have preordered one, but this really seems fishy. I won't be getting one until mid November though so if there's something wrong at least I'll have plenty of time to cancel my order.
I noticed it's actively cooled, anyone know how loud those fans are?
I'm surprised with the total lack of reviews or information about this tablet. To me it looks like one of the best Windows 8 tablets currently available, specially for the price.
Yeah. I wondered why too
The prices is great!. They are selling it at what other OEM charging for the atom processors.
Even the battery life is good, about double of the surface pro. Heck. They didn't even try to cheat you on purchasing overpriced keyboard dock.
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
This device doesn't have a keyboard dock, only an optional cradle. It extends battery life and works great while working at a desk/table, but not so well while sitting up in bed, on a sofa, or anywhere else a laptop comes in handy. Maybe not an issue for some, but that's unfortunately a deal-breaker for me. The whole point in considering a hybrid to begin with. Not sure why they don't have one like the W510. Great device otherwise.

I"m using the Toshiba U920t, which converts from a tablet to a laptop. It is a bit thicker, and the battery is only good for about 5 hours, but it works well, and is only a couple hundred more than the W700 with 128 GB SSD.
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c...model=U920t&lid=CFAMsatellite_SeriesLinkU920t
I have been using a w700 for a month
I love this tablet. I have the i3 with the Intel HD4000 graphic card. I have many tablets, but here's a quick rundown:
Pros
1) runs full win8 which is pretty seemless with touch
2) Beautiful full HD screen
3) Fast SSD, boots in 7 seconds
4) Dock, keyboard and case included in 700 price
5) I run Photoshop with huge images from my Sony a65 24.3 mp camera. It runs almost as fast on i3/4gb as my Sandybridge i7 with 16gb of RAM. I use full MS Office Pro Plus, have a bunch of Metro apps and use Bluestacks for stuff like Google Books (which works great)
6) Bat life is 8-9 hours!
7) The Win store is criticized for lack of content, but some of the games are unreal. Toy Soldiers, Reckless Racing 2, Etc. they blow away the best games for my Asus Infinity/Ipad 3.
8) It's full windows with a beautiful screen and small form factor, what can I say?
Cons
1) SSD is small, 64gb in my case, going to replace it with a 256gb msata
2) No SD slot
3) One usb on device (3 on dock)
4) a little heavy for kindle/ereader usage
After getting this thing, I am going to sell my 2 Asus Transformers and my Ipad and just keep my Nexus 7 for reading.
This thing is amazing, close to full pc/tablet convergence.
I have an Acer W700 tablet as well but with tge i5 processor and the 128GB SSD.
Pros
- The price. The best tablet under 1000€ and it even beats a few of the tablets above 1000€ as well.
- The hardware is fantastic. No lagg or anything! ( this is NOT a gaming tablet but it plays smaller games without problems)
- The touch works great the only problems I've encountered arecaused by the softwares.
- The battery life is amazing beats my vaio every time.
Cons
- No SD card slot ( Being compensated by a 500GB 2.5" external USB 3.0 HDD)
- No 3G modem ( a pro for me since I don't gave to pay for a subscription)
This tablet is one of the best tablets on the market for the price.
I wrote a rather extended review on this Tab on my blog. I will be writing more on both Windows 8 and W700 in the new future.
Link to the review: Can't post a external link here, just go to my blog and click on "Devices" on the right side, should be the one on the top.
I saw pics online of a keyboard case for this tablet similar to the surface style. Should be coming soon.. too bad i couldn't wait..

Yeah I feel the same.. The cover is made by Acer so I think that they will release it for us who have already bought the tablet. Otherwise, ebay for a first / third party afterwards that it has been released. Swedish E-tailers do already have the tablet in their stores but are still waiting for delivery from acer.

The delivery is estimated to the 14th of february
I really love this tablet! I have the I3 version (Ivy bridge) and it is extremely fast. Wonderful screen (comparable to the retina from Apple). Im very impressed so far!

I got mine on January 14th from Futureshop in canada with the keyboard case...the case is very nice.
Only one issue...some times (mostly starts in google chrome but keeps on after closing it and resolves by screen off and on) my touch screen goes crazy and clicks by it self, I have not tried calibrating or other solutions yet and I am thinking of returning, but getting new one will be more trouble...any idea guys?

Yes, almost all W700's have WIFI issue as delivered, but easilly fixable with a driver update. Mine suffered from constantly disconnecting/re-connecting, installed new driver from Acer site, works perfect now. (Make sure to follow instructions about removing old driver, restarting, installing new driver)

I got mine from Amazon.ca, has the keyboard case, but the identical item on Amazon.com also came with the keyboard case. Was $50.00 cheaper on Amazon.ca, & only had to pay gst, versus ND state tax, plus GST and PST if would have ordered on Amazon.com. [HIGHLY RECOMMENDED]Asus Zenbook UX31A Touch

For christmas, I got an asus zenbook touch. Best ultrabook I've ever owned. For 1100 dollars, you get an i5, 128gb ssd, touch screen, and intel 4000 graphics. It is a little steep for those specs but the build quality and touch screen completely make up for it in my opinion. It actually comes with a bunch of accessories too, a folio case, VGA adapter, micro usb cable, and an ethernet adapter. I can write up a full review if anyone wants.
I can answer any questions about it, too
Available here
I was eyeing that exact model at my local Best Buy earlier this week. I'm really torn between this Zenbook and Lenovo's Yoga.
Couple of questions:
How's the Battery Life with casual use?
Wifi issues?
SSD speeds? Did you get the Adata SSD or Sandisk SSD (should say on the box)?
Light bleeding in the screen? This was a major issue with the previous non-touch UX31As.
Is the paint chipping off by any chance?
My main worry with this Asus is that it only has 4GB of RAM and it cannot be upgraded. I'm just not sure if it'll be enough, how does it perform with this amount of RAM? Any hiccups when multiple web pages are up?
I believe that's about it for my questions lol. Thanks if you reply, I haven't logged into XDA for like a year and luckily I happened to find this thread. I really am digging this ultrabook, I need something durable, quick, and light for school that'll last me a good 3 years minimum while retaining its functionality as it was on day 1. Damn you Lenovo and your upgradable RAM, this would've been an easier decision if the Yoga didn't have upgrade options lol.

I'm enjoying my Toshiba T925u. It has about the same specs, but an 11.5 inch screen (not as high in resolution). It has a slide out keyboard for typing, or can be used as a tablet. A bit more expensive at around 1100. Toshiba is expecting them in stock in mid January; they seem to be out of stock everywhere.

Don't get the yoga, there's a plethora of problems with it. Light bleed is present but not a big deal for me at all. SSD speed is lightning fast, boot time is like 3 seconds. 3 seconds for a cold boot. No paint chipping. Battery life is around 6 hours with causal use. I actually have no idea what ssd it is.

If only US Bestbuy shipped internationally
Does anyone else know of any vendors for this besides ExcaliberPC (it's on backorder/preorder - confusing status)
Hey buddy will you able to put some pictures up for it?
Reason I ask is because I am an international buyer and wanted to see how the all black really looks over the weekend press shots, thanks

My sister and I just picked up two Yoga 13's last week. We both love them. The only issue we had was the wacky SSD partition scheme they had on them, but there was a fix available, and easily found, on the product support page. I'm loving mine. It replaced a 2 year old HP DM3 laptop.
I am looking into this model. Very much like the design and specs.
Wanna ask you whether the Windows 8 installation files are located in the SSD? If so... Can I remove them and save the installation files in a USB stick to install the OS later? From what I gather.... The ultra book does not come with installation files...

yes you can, just press "windows key + R" and type recoverydrive.exe, the window will guide you through the rest!
I've got the australian model (silver) but it does seem to come with torx screws on the bottom, dont feel like unscrewing them but is everyone sure you cant upgrade the ram on the touch model? I thought the porblem with the prime models was that you couldnt detach the bottom at all..? (but you seem to be able to with this model... 10GB ram would be nice )
10gb of ram would also be a bad idea in general.
In a laptop you only get 2 slots. Usually each slot will have a max capacity of either 4 or 8gb. To get 10gb across both slots, well, they don't make 5gb sticks so you would have to go with an 8gb and a 2gb. However you get access issues with unmatched sticks, its computer building 101, wherever possible use matched sticks (capacity, access speed, timings, everything, for all intents and purposes just use 2 of the same model). You could do 8gb or 16gb easily enough.
I personally live fine on 4gb. I seriously don't see why the majority of people need more. Although a few of my games have occasionally pushed me past 4gb used so I am considering upgrading to 8.

I know, but with as with the UX32VD I assume that if the ram would be replacable (which it probably still isn't) it would be only one slot, the other dimm is soldered on. So unmatched sticks (2 + 4 or 2 + 8) would be the only way to go. Just googled a little bit and it seems that the normal UX31A was also openable (i thought it wasnt) but only the battery and the SSD is exposed then, so probably no luck for the touch model after all.

Can't really speak for the UX, but on my Yoga, there is only ONE dimm, and there is not another one soldered on it. It's either single channel 4GB or single channel 8GB (8GB is the max for the motherboard and dimm).
Finally got the ultrabook. Enjoying it.
Just wondering whether is there any reason I should keep the ASUS apps that came with the ultrabook? Are they considered bloatware?
Any major consequences if I uninstall them?
Just an update.
I'm running Mint Linux on this ultrabook now.
Quite like it.
There's no need for Windows.

New tablets from Asus

Asus is just about to release two new products, the "new Asus Transformer Pad" and the Fonepad 7.
I was surprised to see the Transformer using a Tegra chip, since it isn't a big deal against its competitor. Also, the camera has a lower resolution. The screen is really cool and the other props are great too. I think for now I'll stick with my TF300T. It still works without issues and Android 4.3 is rocking on here. But the Fonepad 7 have my attention. I wonder how does it go against the Nexus 7 with 3G.
What do you guys think?

The new transformer (TF701T) is the successor to the TF700 (not the TF300). Looks like a substantial improvement in specs, and Tegra 4 is (supposed to be) considerably better than Tegra 3, multiple times faster both in CPU and GPU performance. But unknown how it fairs against the best of the current competition. Unfortunately, the Tegra 4 GPU is a little behind the times in terms of API support (still at DX 9 level, OpenGL ES 2), the Tegra 5 will fix that next year. This may, or may not, be important with some games and modern graphics-reliant apps.
I am not replacing my TF300 anytime soon either. It serves me fine still. Holding on until 2014...
YOU FORGOT THE ASUS BOOK TRIO!!!!!
Well I'm tempted because of the higher resolution and the better ppi but not sure just yet. Wanted to buy the new S Galaxy also so I'm taking a wait and see approach here.
Having said that, I would never pay more than 500 euro for my tablet the Trio while nice will for sure be too expensive. Not a big fan of Windows 8 and the ehole swipe gesture thing.
I will go with tf 701 for android or the asus taichi if you like windows.

The asus Trio isnt a tablet, so putting a 500 euro price on tablets doesnt make sense. Its an actual touch screen laptop, with an i7, that also just happens to have android. I for one cant wait. If its under 1000 USD Ill likely pick it up I love the look / design ( although it would likely never be undocked ).

I understand where you are coming from, but paying around 1000 USD for a small screen and underpowered ultrabook doesn't make sense to me, I know it will run smoothly and featuring an i7 is impressive but: the battery-life will also be a big factor.
I know it may be a personal preference but I'd rather have a 500 USD tablet and a 700 USD ultrabook.

Not to pick on you, but I hardly consider anything with an i7 underpowered. The intel atom processor only powers the android system. The battery life specs are listed for each on their own. When combined, they also add power to whichever system is on. Ive seen speculation of 16/18 hrs docked on the android side, and 7-10 hours running windows. This device has more much more power and features than a macbook air. Any 4th generation i7 touchscreen laptop wont be cheap my friend.
Personally I love my tf300t and replaced my horrible asus prime with it. I had an i7 macbook pro but a friend needed something decent, and I wasnt using it since the asus became my primary device ( aside from my phone...a note 2 ). I also have a custom built i7 3770k / 32gb ram desktop at home hooked up to 2 - 26" samsung screens. Thats where the bulk of my work takes place whem im home.
There are always times while im out that I wish I had a windows device with me for microsoft specific tasks. Since I always have my asus with me. Swapping the tf300 out for something like the trio would make perfect sense. I would still have the horsepower to edit / render video and run photoshop on the fly and still not have to be plugged in all day as Android would be the main system in use. Also its a pain going to the desktop in the basement anytime I needed to use odin / fastboot / adb, or need to do something light but in a hurry.
You are absolutely correct tho, its all a matter of personal opinion.

I called it underpowered compared to "only" ultra-books of the new generation. Since I will never use a laptop, ultrabook without a DVD or Blueray option the Macbook was never of any interest for me. I've had a Vaio for a few years, but the battery life sucked (2 hours!)
I am not going to judge the Trio before I've tested it, but I am just a bit skeptical if Asus or any manufacturer at this point can deliver the promised Windows & Android experience at a reasonable price with enough power. Sure, the specs and datasheets are looking fine but we'll see.
Feeling with you I know especially when it comes down to doing office stuff I'd love to have a real desktop instead of my tablet to work on.
For now I am very excited for the TF 701 and taking a wait and see approach with the Trio.
// Edit //
Forgot to mention, that running Windows 8 will also enable you to dualboot Linux Mint, Ubuntu so that's a great choice I didn't think off.
I added the more tabs to the list

Wait and see is exactly what im doing. I am also interested in the new Padfone. It looks like an awesome combination of tech, minus windows 8. I always use my tablet and phone together anyway. The fact that I could use the phone to power the Tablet and still have a keyboard dock... just awesome

I really like some of the ideas Asus has and how they are putting it together, been a fan of this company since building my first custom PC their mainboards are just the best bar none by far.
Would be awesome, if Asus could find a way to make the battery removable and expand the RAM.
for me too

Dell Venue Pro 8 or Toshiba Encore

I have some trouble deciding between the Dell Venue 8 Pro 64Gb and Toshiba Encore, which one would you choose?
Dell Venue 8 Pro 64gb:
http://www.dell.com/us/p/dell-venue-8-pro/pd
Black friday / Cyber monday sale at 329$.Which ends up at around 460$ when shipped to swedfen
- No HDMI out (which means no chargning and output to a monitor at the same time)
+ Lighter
+ Thinner
+ More accessories
Toshiba Encore
http://www.toshiba.com/us/tablets/encore/8?src=MAKP&cm_mmc=TAI-_-Home-_-TopNav-_-TabletEncore
Available in sweden, around 380$
- Only 32gb
+ Hdmi out
+ GPS
- Thicker
- Heavier
- Logo in wrong direction when using in portrait mode
Primarly I will use it surfing the web, watching hulu (in web browser) outputing to apple tv via AirParrot, as well as some Visual Studio and surfing when hooking it up to a monitor. But I will also use it as a Kindle-reader when reading in bed, so the weight is somewhat important.
If the Dell is more expensive then I'd say get the Toshiba. I have one, its a bit bulkier than the Dell but it has HDMI, windows button in normal location, battery is a bit larger.
The size of the Toshiba isn't something that bothers you? I am a bit worried of that myself. I have a Nexus 7 (2013) and an iPad Air and you get used to the thin form factor
32gb is the biggest problem with it though, that can't be room for much applications? I need to have space for Visual Studio at least as well as some metro apps.

Its only 0.07" thicker than the Dell but is a bit heavier. Go with the Dell if thats an issue for you. My old tablet was a bulky HP Touchpad so anything else feels lighter. If you are going to install a lot of programs go for a 64Gb one. I have a microSD that I can install stuff to but r/w speeds will be better with the internal drive. Also metro apps will only go on the C drive.
Anything that costs that much for shipping is not worth it
