Today I had 3 new emails in the inbox, I can actually see them marked in bold in the email list within the inbox, but the unread count was 2, I killed the Gmail app, logged in again and the same thing, do yo know why ?, thanks
It's happened to me also. What I did was to log in on the PC, marked everything read. Then re-sync the gmail app. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.
This was happening to me after restoring some apps using Titanium backup. Going into Settings>Applications>Manage Applications - Clear data/cache from gmail app.

+1 me either...
I fixed this problem by deleting the account and recreating it. Turning off sync and then back on again did not solve it.

Watch out Gmail 2.3.5 update seems to break widgets and launchers that show unread Gmail. Now I wish I had backed up my GSII Gmail with TB...
Yeah that kind of sucks. Will just have to wait fire the launchers to provide us with an update!

You can do a Google search for Gmail 2.3.4.1 and install that. Fixed my problem.

or you can just go back to market, search for gmail and click uninstall updates.

Just download the previous version from forum or custom rom that has gmail inside. Just take the gmail.apk then install

I had issues rolling back... Even after uninstalling the update, my notifications were still broken, ended up doing a factory reset (and good thing I do a daily backup!)
Was having all kind of other problems with the new gmail app too...auto sync wasn't working anymore so had to refresh manually, emails sometimes wouldn't send and the number of unread emails wouldn't clear. A complete mess really

I can't update GMail, I can't even see it in the Market? Does anybody know why?
It's not among all the Apps I have downloaded.
I can't even find it when searching for it, it just doesn't show up!?

Just search for "gmail" in the market. App is preinstalled so it won't show in the apps downloaded from the market, but if you find it in the market it will just say "update". And yeah, 2.3.5 gmail breaks all notification services that are supposed to retreive unread emails, no longer possbile for now, but i use Samsung Social Hub anyway.
Here is a link to explain it further.
"Basically, previously an app just had to declare that they use the READ_GMAIL permission in it’s Manifest and it would all work. Now though, they’ve added the androidrotectionLevel="signature" which means that only the Gmail app itself can access it’s DB (as that’s the only thing which will have the right signature).
Which means that all the Gmail notifiers, widgets, etc in the Market will not work. Ever. The same can be said for FriendCaster’s Gmail notifications feature.
Thanks Google…."
Yeah!!! Thanks Google!
Edit: Also, Google's competitor (Windoz Phone) shows an unread count on their phones, why can't google have the same native widget that does an unread count. We had to completely rely on 3rd party developers, BUT NOW it wont work!
STUPID GOOGLE!

just don t install de update , or unistall it from market , it breaks , popup , missed reminder , etc.... i won t install untill the other app works with the new gmail
Gmail v2.3.5 seems to break ADWNotifier to. Because that can notify of e-mails from Gmail.
ADW Notifier can no longer do a "count" but can put up the question mark bubble, at least in Chuck Norris mode. Latest update fixed the FC issue it was having.
Google probably though they were helping increase Android security, as I imagine they changed the permissions to prevent potential privacy problems.
I unlocked Gmail 2.3.5. Pure messenger widget can read Gmail 2.3.5 (modded) if you follow 'solution 3' ... http://bit.ly/ph4T0a

Would be nice to try Social Hub, but it will not accept GMail as an account on my phone. Gave up on it.
Tried the uninstall update method. No go.
Google's starting to develop some of the M$ bad habits. Maybe they ARE getting too big.

But does it work?
Hey all so I've been using Gmail and this only happens every once in a while, and idk I clear data and everything works again but this time it isn't. The mails I send are stuck in outbox abs don't send no matter what I do. I've cleared data multiple times and uninstalled and reinstalled the app (for some reason it's not a system app in my Rom even after I flashed gapps), and still didn't work. Anyone know how to fix this, cuz it's really annoying.
Thanks!

It's something to do with the app.
There's been times it's jammed and stays in outbox and appears to not have sent but in fact it did.
Seems I remember clearing the cache in the Google app fixes it.
...... I just went and checked mine... There was 12mb in there.
Go to system settings, manage apps, scroll to Gmail and open, clear cache

Only wipe data as last resort it takes out all of your personal information as you now know! Removing the cache takes out residual leftover files that you were sending or receiving
If the cache button is ever greyed out that means there's nothing there to remove its already clear.

wiping data for the gmail app doesnt really get rid of your personal data, as it reappears when you open gmail and it syncs. anyways, wiping the data for the gmail app also clears the cache.

yes. only wiping data goes a step further by getting rid of any possible corrupted data in the app, not only cache.
Like the tiltle says it, since i update my nexus 4 to 4.3 , when i receive an email in gmail, i dont get the gmail icon in the notification bar to notify me that i have a new message.
I double checked if everything was synced and it is, and inside gmail the notification option is checked.
Its kind of anoying to have to go inside the gmail app everytime to see if i have a new message, because yes i receive them but no sign of it in the notification bar like before.
Just Gmail? Clear data on the app and see if that fixes...have you tried any troubleshooting other than checking the settings?

I cant be sure its just gmail , but i noticed gmail because usually i receive a lot of messages during the day.
Same problem here. After clearing Gmail app data / cache it seems to work now but not 100%. I get notifications but they're delayed by 3 - 5 minutes.

essentially the new gmail app has a separate setting for each label and such for everything in gmail so if you have certain labels or categories set up each of them has a different setting for syncing and notifications that you have to set up

So you mean everything is back to normal (as they were with 4.2.2)? Or are your notifications coming but still delayed? I ask because I just updated to 4.3 and while notifications for everything else seem fine, Gmail is not behaving. Trying to clear data/cache and see if that helps.

Okay, notifications seem a bit slow but they are now working for Gmail. Data/cache clearing also seems to have opened up Google Play Store notifications (which I had not noticed were not working). I guess I'll have to keep an eye on stuff for the next few days to make sure things are working after the 4.3 update.

Possible, yeah, although I had the label notifications on since Gmail was updated before the 4.3 update rolled out. Anyway, I am getting notifications and I am unlikely to notice them being a bit slow. Maybe they were always a bit behind and I just didn't notice and now since I am testing I am noticing more. Thanks for the update.

I was also having issues with Gmail notifications and was afraid it was a bug or something. I went ahead and cleared the data on the app and followed your instructions. That seemed to have solved the notification issue.
I am having the same exact problem on ALL 4.3 builds & have tried clearing app data & cache (which didn't help)
& also Label settings for the inboxes but its still not working!! Anyone figure this out?
So when you go into your contacts list, the first one listed is "Me". If I try to click on myself I get the following message (screenshot) every time. However if I click and hold, I can go in and edit my personal details. Just wondering if this is normal?
