Would "Google edition" S4 help us?

EDIT: Well its here. So what do you all think. It comes with at&t bands so we should have access to a lot of important aosp info.
OLD: So u know nothing is confirmed as of yet, and I know that it seems the thing is spring t-mo bands, but wouldn't this device being available be a major win for us as well? I'm figuring most of the docentation would be identical to ours, so we'd have full access to the phones resources, and all of us could just merge proprietary info from our respective carriers into ROMs and the like. Am I off on this or would this be great news, even for those of us without the major funds to buy the "google" version.
Just trying to learn and going for a discussion . Any insight would be associated.

Not a dev so I can't say for sure but I would think that there would be some benefit for AOSP based ROMs, at least for models that share the same chipset as the "Google Edition" though if there is no new source code released it would mean you'd need to rip binaries from the stock image of the new device to benefit and many devs don't want to go there.
If it turns out that Google (not Samsung) is doing the development work for the device, that it's more like a non-gimped nexus, it could be HUGE but that's not the case for most unskinned ROMs.

If this does happen...I think it would be more like the international version...
Although, either way this would hopefully give us code/drivers for new sensors such as the ir and others...allowing us to possibly bring support for those sensors to aosp...maybe, I'm no dev my self but that what I believe

Well, its here!! I really hope our bootloader unlock gives us access to some of the great features the google edition will provide!! Im mostly curious about the IR Blaster. Id love to be able to keep my remote control without all the samsung bloat.
Anyone else excited about this?

Yes I am, assuming that the Google model uses Snapdragon chipset and not the Exynos it means that we could flash the Google Edition ROM on our phones and that potentially there will be a lot better support for the hardware for AOSP based custom ROMs.

Bloatware is OEM and Carrier installed apps that takes up precious memory and you can't delete.. OEM= Samsung

I don't think this phone will come with Bloatware. If that were true, my Nexus 10 would've came pre installed with a bunch of Samsung software.

I understand the development communities interest in this phone. I love flashing and enjoying, with my beer contributions, the dev's hard work.
I was excited and planned on waiting for more news on this phone before deciding which phone I am soon going to buy.
But, after I/O today and being told 16gb only, I think Google/Samsung failed again. For me, a 16gb Flagship phone is unacceptable. I have a One S and find it hard not to run out of memory and I don't game.
Sad news today for some of us. Hopefully the memory size will change before June 26th. But, I doubt it.

Well it definitely wont have bloat, as a "pure nexus experience" has been confirmed. I think the previous poster say providing clarification and/or enlightening the self-proclaimed "noob" who asked about it earlier.
Man I'm not even concerned about the bootloader u lock anymore.. I'd rather wait til the Google edition drops anyway, we're talking near-immediate and near-flawless cm/aokp/pa support.

I wonder how much of that 16gb will be usable without the bloat though. The stock TW ROM is immense. AOSP is going to be much lighter, giving you more of your 16 gigs.
This is great news for anybody with an S4. The devs are going to have a field day with an AOSP ROM designed for this phone, and we will all profit.
When Dans glorious unlock is released, and the Google edition is released, it will completely change this device for the better for anyone willing to take the romming plunge.

Can the ATT S4 be converted into a 100% Nexus S4?

If the ATT bootloader becomes and unlockable and when the Google version is released will it be possible to turn an ATT S4 into a Google Nexus version 100% and get all the updates from Google once that ROM is loaded? I was tempted to return the ATT and wait for the Google but since I got it though an upgrade I will prob just keep it.

I think maybe it can be. If you look at the LG Optimus G you can convert it into a Nexus 4.

I doubt you will be able to convert it into a device that receives updates from Google, because those updates are pushed based on your device's ID. The Device ID will always be a AT&T Galaxy S4.
However, that doesn't mean that the community won't create their own distros and OTA's that can be applied to any Galaxy S4 whenever Google pushes updates to their Galaxy S4.

I'm sure the day after the rom is released it will be available for us to try out

Thanks guys. I am coming from an iPhone 5 which I prefer and will keep as my primary device. I love the S4 as it is full of features (gimmicks) and eye candy but is no match for the iPhone 5 in terms of robustness etc. Yes iOS has become stale but even at half the cpu power as the S4 it still feels faster and more solid hardware wise. Just purchased the nano to micro sim adapter for $2 so i will be swapping back and forth and enjoying the best of both devices.

I did that for a while and then just stayed with android. I liked iPhone but os was boring quick and biggest issue was trying to type on a small screen and use it felt weird quick as I was used to bigger screen and could never go back to iPhone again. This phone lags big time but with cm10 it will fly and the note 2 or HTC one flies also so you can't compare this crappy Samsung rom on sgs4 to android phones in general.

There are already custom aosp roms released for the phone that are working good...only thing holding back att users is the bootloader. But the fact they exist tells us that we will have a nexus like experience on our s4...idk why everyone thinks it relies on the google edition...because it doesn't. Nearly every phone here on xda has the ability to run aosp aka nexus software
The only benefit of the google edition is it will hopefully bring good source code allowing devs to fix bugs much more easily and incorporate the new sensors into the roms

let's hope the stock android version on the google gs4 is not the same stock android on nexus 4. because if it is, then there will be no gs4 sensor support in the google gs4.

the reason the lg optimus g was able to take nexus 4 stock android and use it is because 1.) the lg optimus g finally got upgraded to android 4.1.2 which gave it the same rmp/tz as android 4.2.2. 2.) they share the exact same hardware since they are both made by LG and the models copied each other. the same wont be able to be said for the gs4, so it will take alot of modifying. much more than it does for the lg optimus g to run nexus 4 roms.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus Edition

What's everybody's thoughts on this new phone? I got a little aroused when it was announced (although it's unclear if it will be released in the UK).
In theory it should be the perfect marriage. Top of class hardware with the best version of Android, vanilla AOSP. It will be easy for CM and MIUI to work with, I guess, and should allow developers the same freedom they get with the other Nexus devices.
Is it making anyone else slightly erect and will you be cashing in your S3 to buy one as soon as they're released?

Actually, given that this is the thread for the phone that precedes it, then it would be interesting to understand what S3 users think, considering their next natural choice of phone would be the S4,assuming they had a good experience with the S3. As most people haven't had a good experience with the S3 due to the Exynos driver debacle, I wonder if this is a step in the right direction by Samsung. So that is why I'm asking S3 users like myself specifically. Don't comment if you don't feel it's relevant.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus edition could cost as little as £479 if it arrives in the UK. This is based on the current pricing structure of the Nexus 4 when looking at UK/US price differences and then applying it to the US price of the S4 Nexus which is $649.
Taking into account Google will no doubt want to undercut Samsung's current UK price which is as high as £579 at Phones4U one could assume they'd offer this as a way of beating the competition.
Unveiled at Google I/O the Nexus edition is essentially a 16GB Samsung Galaxy S4 but with a few subtle changes including an unlocked Bootloader and a completely untouched version of Android 4.2 with Google promising full software support.
The hardware is the same as that found on the US version of the 16GB Samsung Galaxy S4 which means you'll get a quad-core 1.9GHz processor along with the 5-inch Full-HD display.
There's the same 2GB of RAM found in the Google Nexus 4 along with the same GPU so it's likely you'll be choosing the Google-flavoured S4 for its screen and grunt.
On top of that the S4 has a distinct advantage in the memory and battery department with a larger replaceable 2,600mAh battery and the ability to expand the memory by up to 64GB.
Of course the big advantage is the fac that it comes with a completely un-skinned version of Android 4.2 which means no TouchWiz and of course none of the extra software features such as 'Air View'.
Google has only unveiled one version so far in the form of a white 16GB variant and it's not even clear if the handset will be arriving in the UK, but for those who want an uncluttered Android experience it'll be fingers crossed when the handset is due to land at the end of June.

Google: No Factory Image Or Proprietary Binary Hosting For Google Play Edition One

There's been a lot of speculation about just how Nexus-like the Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition phones will be, particularly from a technical / software update standpoint. Now, we have some relatively concrete information that sheds light on these issues.
First and foremost, Google will not directly handle software updates for Google Play edition devices. This has been reported as true, false, and generally disputed quite a lot in the lead-up to the launch. We know for a fact now (thanks to Anandtech) that while Google will supply the necessary Android builds to OEMs, the OEMs will be responsible for maintenance of kernels and all the various drivers and firmware pieces necessary for their specific device. The result is that Google gives the OEMs the Android build, and it's then up to the OEMs to make that build work on their Google Play edition device and perform the act of actually updating the phone. Google has issued an official statement that works very hard to not expressly deny that they won't be handling the updates (Droid-life):
What's this mean for you? It means that at the end of the day, the onus to update these phones will still be on Samsung and HTC. They will be able to circumvent the carrier certification runaround, and will in theory have much less work to do in maintaining these devices, but the responsibility still falls to them, not Google. This could mean any number of things. It could mean these phones will get updates within days of their Nexus counterparts. But more likely weeks, and possibly even months depending how much attention these phones are actually given by HTC and Samsung. I wouldn't say months is what we should expect, but I'm also saying such a gap is entirely within the realm of possibility. You have to remember, these phones will sell in miniscule quantities compared to their skinned brethren, and that means they aren't as high up on the value chain for software update attention. While it's certainly worth being optimistic about the update process, there's still plenty of reason to temper those expectations until we see these devices receive their first major Android release update.
he second thing we've learned is that Google will not host factory OS images for Google Play edition devices (see JBQ's post on this topic here). This will be up to Samsung and HTC, if they choose to do so. Google will also not be hosting any proprietary binaries (essentially, drivers) for these phones (again, see JBQ). Release of any binaries is, once again, up to Samsung and HTC. Taken together, all this information - as you may already have guessed long ago - means there is very little chance we'll ever see these phones supported in AOSP. It's not impossible, but it is extremely unlikely.
So there you have it: that's basically the nuts and bolts of what doesn't make the Google Play edition HTC One and Galaxy S4 Nexuses. Does this put a damper on the situation, or is it immaterial? Let us know in the comments.

Possibly, but I am not losing my IR blaster and camera app for half-supported stock Android. If HTC will push out the update within a week or two after it comes out for Nexus devices, then I will definitely flash it, if not then I don't see the point of it. I would rather do S-OFF + Super Cid and still enjoy all these things than losing too many good things for basically just stock Android.

Did you really expect more? Google never said they would be Nexus devices or supported by AOSP. They are Nexus "Experience" devices... hence they offer the same feel without being the same.
Sorry to burst your bubble.... that said I think there will be dedication on the part of HTC and Samsung to get updates.. there isn't any excuse and you know if the device is on Google Play then el'Goog will be pressuring them to not delay

Yep, OP...sure this is stock AOSP, but if anyone thinks the S4 and One will be updated the instant the Nexus line is, they are smoking some serious ****.
Samsung and HTC still have a role in this, ala Verizon (CDMA) Galaxy Nexus. It will slow things down. It's on HTC and Samsung to instantly update their proprietary apps to play well with AOSP. We've all seen that movie before, now have we?
Sigh. Can of worms. I called it. Once you integrate manufacturer specific features into AOSP (Beats, Zoe, etc) it WILL slow down the instant (expected) release of AOSP to "OMG PURE GOOGLE) phones. Psst: they aren't Nexi.
Just deal with it. I cringe for the blasting posts from those who got the One/S4 AOSP editions once the newest Android OS is pushed out...to the Nexus line first.

I don't see the point of these devices anymore. You lose out on the few customization that OEMs provided that weren't useless (fully functional Beats, camera software, improved text messaging and browser apps, etc.) for a vanilla experience that is nearly indistinguishable from the OEM version running a custom launcher. And no guarantee of fast updates.
You'd have to be a dummy to buy these phones from the Play store.
Thankfully I have an unlocked T-Mobile One. I'll just use it or flash whatever, whenever. Paid $450 for it and am very happy with my gamble.

So the question still remains, could someone possibly take whatever HTC releases for the GE version and put that on a carrier locked or Dev edition phone? Sorry for my lack of understanding here, but I'm just trying to figure out which phone to buy at this point.

Automatic = sent directly to the phone.
Updates = it'll be updated.
Latest Android version = it'll get newer versions of Android.
The key words that are missing are "when" and “from whom.” I guess people can read in to that statement what they want but nothing in it makes what OP posted untrue. With so many phones orphaned on old versions of Android that statement could be as benign as "your phone will keep up with Android releases."

The first post says it isn't an AOSP device, Google isn't managing the proprietary drivers, they aren't posting the s/w images, and they aren't responsible for pushing out updates. So your statement is true; for Nexus devices. "Play Edition's" aren't Nexus devices.
The fact that it doesn't say the below which Google says about their devices probably means what OP posted is true.

I say get the phone with the most bands for resale and every day use. Hint. It isn't the Google or Dev one.
Unlock it for $7 and never look back.

Not true..
This situation has been done before. The OG Droid (Sholes) was not a Nexus but ran vanilla software. Updates came but abit later. They came from Motorola.

it is taking a while. I played with the 10.1 tab pro or whatever with the same specs and it runs much smoother.

It's odd. Here's the press release Samsung U.S. issued dated February 18. Not a single device on the list except for the N3 and SGS4 which were already in the process of receiving KitKat has received it.

Since Samsung literally floods the market with devices, I'm sure they're having a tough time keeping them straight to update. I'm sure we'll get it sometime soon. I hope.

The new Samsung tab 4 line-up are all loaded with KitKat...

Samsung says all carrier variants will get the update.

I actually sent them an email a few days ago. Got a reply although it wasn't very helpful. Here's what they said:

Still waiting for a higher version of android than 4.1.2 on the Samsung galaxy note 10.1 - N8000... It's only been 1 1/2 years since I got it but we're still stuck there on 4.1.2....

My tablet still works fine so I have no problem waiting. The latest leaked firmware does help tremendously though... it'll come eventually so relax yourselves

I'm assuming in that they will hold off as long as possible to release the update. They want to sell the new tab and note pro lines which makes sense. I'm shocked to see the new low end tab 4 lineup has it. Seems very fishy.
I think it's the same business tactic Verizon is using for the kitkat update in the bite 3 which annoys me. Mark my words they will release 4.4.2 to Verizon on day 15 post S5 release. Maximize their sales on the phone. So April 26 kitkat is released to those of us including myself with a note 3 on vzw. Sorry for the rant.

Not really. The only device(s) more expensive than the N10.1-14 are the 12" Pros. From a margin perspective I can't see the Tab Pro 10.1 making Samsung any more money than the N10.1-14.
I'm shocked to see the new low end tab 4 lineup has it. Seems very fishy.

Google's finally started to exert themselves in leveraging "free Android" against access to Google Apps (Play content apps [movies, music, books, etc.], Google+, Google Play Services, and Chrome). They recently published requirements that, in order to get access, OEM's had to use the latest version of Android on new devices. In addition, the Samsung/Google cooperation agreement seems to have affected Samsung's s/w direction. Magazine UX went from a replacement UI when it was announced with multiple pages pre-configured including being featured as the primary home page to "Content Home" at launch. Half the widgets have been removed, the tiles that could launch any installed app are gone, and it's now one pre-configured page of news set as the last of the home pages. Samsung Hub which probably annoyed Google most as a competitor to Play Content is also gone with the Pros. Leaks of major changes to TW for the SGS5 never came to fruition either.
So something's fishy but my guess is it's more of a political realignment between titans than something to do with any singular device or series of devices. And if as part of the agreement Samsung's adjusting the content in future s/w releases and updates it could explain the delay. This is all supposition on my part but it's odd that a company with Samsung's resources hasn't pushed updates to over a dozen devices they've committed updates for in over two months.

I think that I'm not stretching when I say that probably more than 90% of phone and tablet buyers have absolutely no ideas what version of the operating system is on their device. Holding off on KitKat for a Note 10.1 has nothing to do with sales. It has to do with priorities and resources. I know from experience that good developers are put to work on new products and so-so developers are put on maintenance projects. I'm sure that Samsung is no different.

What I really want is a CM 10.1.. much better than any stock Samsung ROM. But I also see no development in that direction. There are too many devices out there. It's becoming chaos and just very few can catch the time and resources of the developers. Samsung products get worse and worse in quality, Android messier and less truly "open" while Goggle itself more and more controlling.. the whole thing is a mess. I am tired and disappointed. My first original Galaxy Tab 7 was and is still king. Surely getting slower by all current measures but STILL working like new. Amazing build quality, almost 4 years of development and still going.. I'm running 4.4.2 on it, flawlessly.. how ironic this is..

Well you can always try and start development for yourself.
The hardware in the note 10.1 is used in a lot of other devices that are already running KK so all necessary software and drivers should be available.
In theory it wouldn't be all that difficult to port the note pro 12 rom for example. I'm thinking about maybe giving it a go but I'm not really sure where to start.

Same here.. totally agree with you. A 10.1 build should not be so difficult to get together as the hardware is so similar to other machines. That would solve all problems once and for all. But like U, I have no idea where to start.. alone I can't do it. Small team would be great. I'm even willing to pitch some money to get this started and everyone motivated. I am a few days away from selling this tab and giving up. It's useless like it is for me. And I need make the dpi higher because all too small and badly formatted as it is with some of the apps I use at the default 320dpi.. but "darling" Samsung has done something further to this tab's main apps and framework so it will positively NOT boot at higher dpi settings (lower values OK, just not higher).. I tried all possible ways, dpi changing apps and ROMs (I have a P-605). No way. This tab is totally useless not me.. and not to mention I have a disastrous yellow tint on the display and no way to adjust or calibrate that either. Samsung is on the way out of my life.. we get s... t software, no updates and impossible to even try fix it.. is glorious.. I'm done and done..

I'd be up for giving it a try with some people.
I have a strong background in IT and software and have some limited programming knowledge so I should be able to get all this.

I'm totally up for it. Count me in and let's do it. But remember there are 2 fundamentally different machines.. the Exynos and the Qualcomm/LTE (like mine) are different animals in many ways..

I totally agree, howerver I hope the porting process will not be that much different.
A succesful port on one model will probably make the porting process for the other a lot easier to pull off.

Let's start a new thread and can some talent gathered and together to get this done! And U want developan overclocking kernel for the P-605. Qualcomm CPUs can go very high.. my HP TouchPad with a venerable Dual-core 1.2GHz running KitKat is overclocked to 2.1GHz stable. I've had this machine for 3 years.. First Gingerbrea, then ICS, then finally CM 10.1. Initially overclocked to 1.7, later 1.9 and finally 2.1 wwith KitKat. Yeah, it runs hot.. but who cares? Rock solid for 3 years and going strong. I bet the 2.3GHz Snapdragon can go easily past 2.5 or 2.7.. and this Tab is large.. plenty of space to dissipate heat.. If we can get CM 10.1 running and push the CPU, this will be an amazing machine..
