[Ref] Note 2 Dev List the Unofficial.

This is the unofficial thread to find the list of developers for the Samsung Galaxy Note II.
If you are a developer and or ROM maker/cooker would like to confirm that you are going to dev on this device please send me a pm, and I will add you to the list. In past experiences these types of threads have shown to be very helpful to build dev support for a device, and also to help people decide on a device.
What, actually is the list for?
Basically its for people and devs to see all the dev support the device will have. This sometimes is the deciding factor for getting a phone. If there's huge dev support more people will come. This makes it easier for people to find information on what devs will be supporting the note 2.

Thanks for starting this thread. I just want to ask "Do you think there be a lot of development for this phone?" Particularly for Note II, in general for future Samsung phones.
I just finished watching this video here or here and I just heard about some developers leaving Samsung altogether? Samsung locking bootloaders? Samsung getting too big for their own ego?
I currently own the Int'l N7000 and I found the development to be good for what I want. I didn't check out the i717 thread but I assume they are fair.
I'm not really experienced in rooting but I found Samsung Note to be fairly straight forward. I recently rooted an HTC Amaze 4G and the numerous steps plus the lack of info made me never to buy an HTC phone (even if I do like the HTC One X, my friend has the North American version and he said development is low there).
This is one reason why I'm holding out on the Note II until Feb 2013, maybe even Sept 2013 (in case Note 3) comes out because I want to see how the development plays out.
I know the phone just came out, but I assumed International Note development should be all hunky dory but I never know. Makes me not want to switch devices. I had an Int'l Galaxy S2 previously and development for that is great!
I hear Sony development is awesome. But then, I think I'll just go get a Nexus for ease of development (but the screen is so small!)
What do you guys think?

thanks leafsacc, I wasn't aware of this until now. I'm still not sure what's going on but I assumed there would be a way around a bootloader, as coders always find a way :highfive:
but reading the below, says it could have been verizon which was the cause of the bootloader, not samsung. so why is xdadevtv directing his video to samsung? is it because no open source was given for the s3? has it still not been released? will it be? anyone care to sum it up for some of us who aren't in the know? :>
Based on Samsung’s track record of always shipping devices with unlocked bootloaders, we can all safely deduce that Verizon is the one to blame here.

For starters cm will not support n7100 if samsung dont change their ways. atleast the current dev team in cm will not support newer samsung exynos devices. i9300/n80xx was the last. Only way to get n7100 supported is if samsung cooperate or a new dev join cm dev team.
Without cm support i cannot do my paranoidandroid from source as I do with n7000. Time will tell if some new dev join cm samsung team or samsung get their act together. Dont look good though.

Whoops not good news :crying: i need also sources...

Well I don't get it because it is sharing most of the hardware with S3 so the stuff should be at least ported easily.
Now I understand Samsung being a complete ass with their proprietary drivers

You still need one of the dev maintaining exynos devices to buy n7100 and then maintaining it... we can hope for someone to step up but its their freetime and money. Entropy512 told me he would be buying at&t version which is nearly identical if samsung would change their behavior. All we can do for now is to sit and wait...

This is a great thread. I hope more chefs will chime in.
I am considering a Note II but it is absolutely vital that CM is developed for it, together with Paranoid Android. Especially since Key Lime Pie (CM11?) is be around the corner.
I also think it is important with AOSP/AOKP development for it.
So I hope the issue will be sorted during this month. If not, I am afraid that I have to consider a different game plan.
Buying a device without proper developer support is a no go for me.

I Googled "verizon locked bootloader samsung galaxy note" and from what I understand that it was Verizon's request to lock the bootloader. Not sure what I would do if I was Samsung but my guess is, if it helps sell more phones on Verizon then lock the boot loader. Money talks, right?
But then I'm hearing news about Samsung not giving developers this and that, just like the example below.

And I also need a phone that will have Paranoid Android (and the odd CM here and there), but it must also a 5" phablet. I guess there is nothing wrong with my current Note, but again by searching on Google there's a possibility that the "next big thing" might be the HTC Google Nexus X+. If that has an expansion card slot, that's it, I'm not getting the Note 2.

Thanks for all the work the dev's put in. I'm just saying, my next phone is where the developers are. Samsung doesn't own us. :laugh:

For those that don't know, TW ROM, aokp and multi booting kernel (or at least 2 sesperate kernels )
Myself and utaka could probably come up with a aosp supporting kernel for the device if official CM does not materialise.

I've already ordered my note 2, but I would fully support the dev crew. even if that means selling my note 2 at a loss and buying what's being developed, pending though. I do like phablets and if the x+ doesn't have an exspansion slot then I probably wouldn't buy it.
I also hope aokp devs on the note 2. I certainly love their ROMS

Anyways, I think devving for this device would initially start with kanged TW based ROMs. With CM wary on supporting the device, it does seem a bit dark but hey, I am sure there are others to step up.
But then again, you can never be too sure.

BTW, next nexus device is perhaps open to all OEMs.
Might be an Optimus from LG but from what I've read other manufactures are welcome to jump in and join the party.

I am the same, an expansion card slot is a big plus.
development support is also a big factor.
I would flash aokp right now but i'm so scared of emmc bug (which I assume will not be in the Note 2 just like it did not exist in GB ROM Notes. But who knows if "Key Lime Pie/Kandy Kane" might have a similar brick bug) on ICS kangs that I just stay far, far, away.
My ultimate fav is CassiesXtraLite so it's good to see thering1975 on the list.

I might bring VillainRom to the Note2, but only if/when we can get our OTA update/optional mods app up and running to a high enough standard.

Would be nice to know for wich model is going to work each developer.

Without a memory card slot and a removable battery I will always pick S3 without any question not to mention Nexus 4 is LG.
Now why can't google for once release a nexus with a memory card slot :/ and hopefully next nexus will be released by Sony

It may happen. Looks like Google make rotation every time release new Nexus.

Because they want you to use their cloud storage and a fixed battery keeps the unit cost down. It's amazing that they've managed to produce the hardware for the price, but I still chose the S3 as I couldn't live with being tethered to a wall plug for 4 hours a day.

Catching myself on flashing Cyanogen after every samsung rom release - it's just clean and light comparing to the last one , i then thought, if i love pure G more than a blup-blup cartoonish mothefuker even with cool milti window which i used 4-5 times to put iScumbags in depression and smart rotation which is a super must feature. However , i just enjoy a lot more when using aosp , eventhough S3 is a great device

Looks like he's using Paranoid Android, because of the split screen email.

Close run contest at this point, but next year when the S4 comes out and Sammy can't be bothered updating the S3 to later versions of android anymore, the N4 will suddenly seem far more appealing.
The fact Samsung will not release usable hals and related sources then a fully working Aosp alternative isn't going to be an option either.

Yep, well the rumors where that the nexus family was gonna become a line, so there were gonna be different nexus devices by different makers at the same time
I honestly dont think that the nexus will ever have an SD slot..why? dont even ask me cause it doesnt make sense, but most likely because its was originally supposed to be a developer phone? who knows..but they need to start listening to us the users
My thing is..when I hear "nexus" I think of the cream of the cream, top of the line stuff on it..they shouldnt cheap out on parts nor design..and somehow they just keep doing that over and over again

sammy used to be better but sadly you are correct..they will release the s4 and the s3 quickly will be left behind

Try paranoid android it feels as pure as possible and very smooth as well

So is the theme in this thread that the SGS3 is the better phone than the nexus 4?
I have been mulling this over and over in my head. I have an update in may and I don't know if I should sell my SGS3 now and get the nexus 4 then decide in may if I want to jump to SGS4 or keep my SGS3 till may and swap then ???

That's where I was leaning especially with an upgrade around the corner I can always make that decision then. I was just wondering over here if many made the swap from SGS3 and if they regret it or are OK?

HTC One and Vanilla Android (5.0 (Keylime Pie))?

I had sworn off non-Google phones after a couple of Samsung experiences, but the One is just so well-designed, I can't resist it. It's really the first Android phone which can compete with the iPhone in hardware design.
Now my question is, what happens when Google rolls out Android 5.0? Would vanilla Android be available quickly for the unlocked 32Gb and the 64 Developer edition? Is there any reason why it may not happen, or it may be difficult to do? Would the non-standard button layout throw a wrench in the OS upgrade possibilities?

If you buy the developer edition you can install plane lemon pie on it as it has the bootloader unlocked or any kind of ROM you want. On the Unlucked one you will need to wait until HTC releases the update as it also comes with thei Sense 5.0 UI.:laugh:

HTC have been saying they will be working a lot harder to get the latest updates out to their phones. And you can see as well in the One series that they have delivered to an extent.
Plus as the HTC One is their flagship device for this year, they will be putting all of their attention on it

As I would agree to this, without source code and binaries for the device I.E> sensors, bt, wifi, processor from HTC the dev edition wont just = instant updates to latest and greatest. Its just nice to see them least offering it up.

They don't even have 4.2 on the One, so I am assuming it would take them a long time to get KLP on the One.

There's a reason why they did not got for 4.2. Here's a quick snip from Anandtechs amazing review
HTC says it went with 4.1 for both stability and time to market reasons, which I think is reasonable considering some of the 4.2.x issues people have complained about, though 4.2.2 fixes most of it. At this point it would be awesome to have 4.2, but for a smartphone the only features I miss are the notification shade settings and perhaps photosphere.

Not to mention Lock screen widgets.
But my point is not whether they CAN out 4.2 on their device, but the fact that they did not.
Samsung has 4.2 on the S4, while the SIII also has a leaked ROM. So, I would say that KLP would come to the One in Q4 of this year at the earliest.

What is HTC's history in terms of offering source code and binaries for their hardware? (I haven't had an HTC since the WM days
I pre-ordered the 32GB unlocked, but now I am wondering if I jumped the gun and I should sit tight and wait for whatever the Next Nexus phone is? The only problem is, Google does not know how to drive good hardware design, and I really doubt the next Nexus will be as well designed or built.
For what it's worth, I love 4.2.2 on my Galaxy Nexus, although it is getting to be a bit laggy with some apps. Nevertheless, I feel it is a bit more bug-free overall than 4.1.
If it doesn't look like HTC will release enough code to allow the One to be made vanilla Android and freely updated to the latest OS, i may actually cancel.

When the devs get the bootloaders unlocked flashing things will be no problem. It may take a while but it'll happen eventually.

Also, as ive come over from a samsung, not a 100% sure how sense development has been on sense roms as they failed to port it to anything else, have they managed to mix it with aosp or anything else?

Atm im running aokp on my htc one-x
I can run pa or cm too if i wanted to and this device only has the htcdev unlock available.
Also sense from other devices can be ported but its a pita so dont expect to much on that side.
However there are also roms who strip htc sense entirly making it a treu aosp experience and diff ui's can be flashed( xperia and samsung ui have been ported to hox)
Obviously this doesnt mean its gonna happen at the one but i sure hope so

But bootloader unlock (which AFAIK is available for the 32gb unlocked version as well) does not mean that the rest of the hardware will be opened up to developers, right?
Ugh, I was hoping for a much more optimistic scenario.... I love the efforts the developers here pour into maintaing these sets when the hardware is not exposed and the manufacturer drags its feet on updates, but after having to deal with the constant ROM tinkering and numerous resulting issues with my old Samsing sets, I am not excited about the prospect of going through it again.

Youd have two out of three running aosp etc. Every other HTC device running has a scrappy camera since they went to 8mp. It remains to be seen what the ones camera would be. If it's deal though you lose a lot. Okay 4.2 etc is sweet on the nexus range but there hardware was built around it
Fairplay is try it on the one..debateable whether it'd be worth it though

I would hope so. But the fact that they are releasing their flagship with months old OS version is a little worrying.
I am not so broken up about 4.2, but 5 sounds like it will be a rather major update and if this thing doesn't get updated promptly, it will be a very disappointing acquisition for me.

Exactly. I can't believe there's already complaints about the time it will take HTC to update the phone to KLP. One of the main reasons people are flocking to this phone is the awesome job HTC did on the software features. If they slapped it together you could have the latest, but not the same experience. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

How do you know this? I would love for this to be true but, given my experience with the One X, I find it hard to believe.

AOSP-Support: possible? useful? buggy due to Samsung?

Hi prospective Note 3 owners,
Many Samsung customers and I had bad experience with the Galaxy S3 concern to updates and driver support (exynos one). Since I am a big fan of AOSP, I would be very interested to know how it looks this time or will look like. Moreover, how useful will it be on a device with pen and many android adjustments for it. I really hate touchwiz design, the darkblue and greenish interface. I think, it would be a more coherent feeling, if Samsung would have used holo design.
The question is, if cyanogenmod supports the device, will it get less problems due to the snapdragon 800 and qualcomm driver support? What about the camera and its image stabilizer?

I'm deciding between the LG G2 and the N3 at the moment and I will not buy a phone that cannot properly run AOSP ROMs (like my I9300 S3 which has horrible battery life and flaky camera unless I use a TWiz ROM - and then I get lag, and **** RAM management/multitasking).
I'm presuming that the Snapdragon 800 version of the N3 will get lots of dev support and reliable AOSP ROMs?
This locked bootloader/KNOX business is a bit concerning though, I ain't buying anything with a locked bootloader, full stop.
I really like the look of the G2 and I'm unsure whether N3 is going to be too big for me - but it's hard to ignore that the N3 is a beast, and now there's a phone with 3GB of RAM I don't think I can buy anything less future-proof than that.

I actually contacted LG regarding this the other day. They put me in contact with an 'LG g pad expert' who told me that it was unlikely that V500 would see any updates beyond 4.2.2, but that they would keep the LG G2 current (obvious). I was like, 'uhhhh, shouldn't it be easy since the gpe has the same specs and there is already 4.4 kitkat for it?'. He went on to explain to me that the OS development team responsible for the gpe was separate from the one that was responsible for the original g pad (V500) and that they (original developers) were being left out of the loop on everything regarding the new updates. The old devs were from LG and the new ones are from Google I think - I may have interpreted him incorrectly as he was difficult to understand... but I think this was the jist of what he was saying.

The upgrade to 4.4 broke my GPS completely. I did a factory reset to go back to 4.3 and then overnight it automatically updated to 4.4 again. After that the GPS works again.

there is no official update at the moment for 4.3 or 4.4.2. Only way is to install a custom recovery and then a custom rom. Cyanogenn mod 11 released a snapshot version yesterday

he is talking about a custom rom or maybe the gpe edition? There are no official updates atm and i find it kind of hard for an official update to break your gps

I very, very much doubt LG would kill support for their only tablet (outside of the GPE) as soon as it was released. If this thing gets stuck on 4.2.2 it'll be the last LG product I ever buy. Granted, I'm on 4.4.2 thanks to developers, but still. It would be very stupid of them.

There have been some rumors on sites that it will get it this quarter. Don't know how reliable anything is and will just wait and see. If it doesn't get an update I will end up rooting and flashing but I hope it does get an update because I like the LG interface and extras.

A few people have spoken to LG about this and they currently have no plans to update the stock ROM to 4.4.2. Your best bet would be to root and flash it.

I agree with you completely - I won't do business with them in the future either, but as I stated before, I contacted them and this is what they told me (that they prob wouldn't do updates). I think they are going to let the V500 supply dry up and only the V510 will be available from then on out. If that's the case, the user base of the V500 will be relatively small so they might not feel that its worth it to keep it updated for a small group of people.

Who have they talked to? The people who would typically answer a phone or email are unlikely to know. They will know of any potential update when or if LG is ready to release one just like anyone else. Until or if that happens, they are going to say no plans and would probably be instructed to say no plans.
Unless someone has a real inside source, I would be leery of any information coming from Joe blow at LG.
Regardless, I am sure I will be flashing it eventually anyway. I know myself too well to think I won't.

I don't know man.. I think LG could just leave it as is. Since I mean.. Blue stripes, 7 LED's on white background with low brightness.. It just seems like there's been so many issues with this tablets screen that.. Well.. Why not release something new and take care of the issues?

With that said, I dealt with the screen and I don't notice any troubles at all, but not every one feel that way. I mean.. The boxes aren't sealed in half of the stores.. Man this tablet has had a pretty poor launch from LG's standpoint.
What I don't understand is why Google took it in at all with all these screens and such. Shouldn't they be pushing for like.. REAL quality? Gah, not that it's not quality.. It's just not Nexus standard with all these things on the screen. I dunno dude. Something just tells me that this tablet isn't gonna be as huge as I expected before I got it myself. If Google starts developing on the GPE all I can hope for is that ppl find a way for us v500 ppl to port over and keep on using this beast tablet. Cause let's face it. All tablets have issues, these are just a bit more.. Visual.. But fixable/ignorable/circumstanced I'd say.

The problems with this tablet are tiny compared to most of the devices that Google have released.
Check the forums for the devices that covers the first 3 months of release.
I waited 6 months before I bought the original n7 because of all the QC issues.
And also bear in mind that the actual sales figures for Google devices is just a small drop in the Ocean, compared to the big boys.

Lol go look at nexus 7 2013 forums. Google doesn't care about quality control for the most part in my opinion. Its a major factor why I decided to get this.

I see your points guys. Just from having checked the earliest 3 pages on the Nexus 7 (2013) General forums I've found several reports on dead pixels and dust under the bezel/screen.
I subtract my statement. To some degree. I still stand firm by the fact that I don't understand why Google would choose a tablet that has been reported to have like.. Cohesive issues with the screen and that it is up to peoples "nit picking" if they wanna keep it or not.
One thing is to have Asus produce a tablet, test some devices and then release it and THEN find out the screens and the damn assembly of the tablets has been flawed as fck, not to mention the seemingly bad functioning android 4.3 Stock Nexus 7 ROM. - Another thing is to decide to re-release a branded 8 inch tablet as a Google device even after it has been receiver with such big variation by the masses.
With all the devices that were being swapped for new ones already, I don't see how Google would think they'd actually make a lot of money on selling this device. Wouldn't it have been more clever to wait around and see if something better came along? Of course the fact that the LG G Pad 8.3" falls in line with the low cost Google devices is of course a reason worth considering as well, in terms of branding. It just doesn't change that this tablet is unstable on the consumer market since many people thinks of the screen as the most important thing on a tablet, and I will agree with them since you're looking at it and it will show all mistakes to you at all times (when you choose to look for them.)
Isn't there a difference between creating a device and then finding the flaws after production and re-releasing a device you already knew was having issues that a big part of the community was rather unsatisfied with to begin with?
- Sorry for the long answer guys. And I agree with you on the fact that Google prolly doesn't care that much about quality control since all these issues are floating around in the Nexus forums. So, I'm sorry for the first post. This one is simply just me thinking about the last part here.

First of people on these forums myself include d are the worst nit pickers. 99% of buy public would either not notice or care of what we complain about.
GPE edition is likely due to face there is a partnership with Google and lg. The last 2 Nexus phones are made by LG.
Overall it is a good tablet. It would cost them nothing for current users to be Allowed to move the software top sane add gpe version if they decide not to continue support.
Long before then I am sure we will have a rom with the best of both
