[Q] [help] Samsung Galaxy S4 keeps restarting.. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i'm an original iphone user, got bored of it my planned ran out and I chose the Samsung galaxy S4.. So forgive me if i'm a bit of a 'noob'
I just received the phone Friday afternoon everythings all good. Starting to love the S4 but when I lock the phone (press the side button, don't use it anymore) after about 5-10 seconds it just keeps restarting.. It will restart and if I don't put my sim pin in, it will restart again (within 2 min).
Same if I'm on a call about 2 minutes in it will restart and do the same process.
things i've tried.
>taken the battery out, restarted again.
> did a bit of googling and did that restore to factory settings thing (turned off hold power, volume and home button)
I've rang my service provider and told them about it only option is to send it back. Is there anything I can do from home to resolve the issue, cbf being without a phone.
cheers in advance

Have you checked for update ?

yeah mate yeeeup seems all up to date

Try updating it to a new version the Odin way. Haven't heard of this issue before but it could be a buggy old firmware.

Fairly serious problem after Kies firmware update

OK, so today I decided to update my Galaxy S firmware via Kies as it was now available for Vodafone customers. All seemed to go ok, got to the final screen on Kies where it says completed, phone will reboot when firmware update completed. However it never did reboot, the menu and back button lights just lit up and stayed on for ages.
Now the phone would only boots to the Galaxy S start up screen and get stuck.
I decided to go into recovery mode and do a factory reset which sort of helped. The phone boots up into Andorid but only to the 'Welcome to GT-I9000, touch the Android to begin'. Except the 'force close' messages keep popping up saying XXXX process has stopped unexpectedly, and pressing the 'touch android to begin' doesn't do anything (more force close errors pop up). After a while the force close errors stop, but pressing 'the Android' does nothing.
If I plug the USB cable in it is recognised and I can choose Samsung Kies/Mass Storage mode on the phone. However, if I press Samsung Kies and fire up Kies it just gets stuck on 'connecting'. Nothing shows up on on the phone though.
Any ideas on what to do next? Flash firmware with Odin?
Any help would be much appreciated, really don't want to have to send it back to Vodafone
Have you tried unplugging the battery from the device and leaving it for a while and restart it. It may work out....
I've flashed it to JM8 now and is working okish.
I installed the project voodoo lag fix and now I can't sign into my gmail or facebook account which is slightyly irritating . Worked fine before, any ideas why it comes up with "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server"?
I'm using wifi to connect to the internet, full signal, worked fine in same place before etc. Internet works fine so it suggests the connection is ok. Any ideas?
I had this issue yesterday and resolved it by doing a factory reset in the settings app. For some train the recovery mode reset doesn't reset the google link..
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
lex_87, did you ever resolve this? I've been having a tonne of issues since upgrading to the Vodafone-provided update that was released on 19/09, and after getting fed up with my phone crashing/panicking all the time, did a a factory reset from within the Settings menu. And now I've got exactly the same issue as you.
Really not sure what to do. If I flash it myself I'll end up voiding the warranty and if I send it back to Vodafone, I won't get a replacement for weeks, if not months, as they're out of stock.
Any help would be appreciated...
You need to re-enter your APN settings to get data to work again, Google for vodafone's APN settings.

S7 Edge "Bootloader Exception" bug

Hi all,
I've received my S7 Edge today(Exynos), yay.
All was working flawlessly until few moments ago, I was running 3Dmark, and before I even start to bench, while i was downloading the first scene The screen goes all black, then after 10 seconds, there's a message on top (in the same way a rooted phone would display "kernel is not seandroid enforced..."):
Bootloader Exception
[RST_START = 0x100000000 ]
[...]
Exception: do_handler_serror: SERROR(esr: 0xbf00000000)
[...]
I didn't install any rom, root or else, it's pure stock untouched. I tried to reboot phone using volume down+power, it reboots I think (screen goes all black) but quickly the same message appears...
I'm surely going to call phone operator to tell them that phone is KO, but if one of you guys has any idea that would avoid me to send back phone to warranty, it would be nice
Thanks !
@mods : Sorry for posting in wrong section
Try this...

I'd suggest a factory reset if the above fails.
Hold Power + Volume Up + Menu
Then use the volume keys to scroll to factory reset and select using menu or power buttons.
Hi guys,
Thanks very much for you answers,
Unfortunately any key combination is not working can't get into recovery nor download mode ...
I don't want to try Odin, scared about potential warranty issues ... but it kills me to have to send the phone back to sammy and wait ..

The phone must be off for the Volume Up + Power + Home button combination to work. Keep those pressed for like 10 seconds, even after the phone powers on. I just tried it on my S7 Edge (which drops every call) and could restore to factory settings (but didn't solve the issue).

Thanks for your advices !
Unfortunately, even with this combination and a lot of patience I cannot manage to "bypass" this Bootloader error ...
I'm mad because it will take one month to get a new phone from my operator(just called them ...)
So maybe i'm going to try Odin ... but if I cannot put my phone into download mode, i'm f*ckued, right ?
Here's a photo of the error message :

Nope, the phone doesn't boot anymore... it only displays the bootloader error message...
And no possibility to access reboot or recovery...
Maybe I can try to check with ADB, but my problem is that i would need to active USB debugging in settings ... but i can't do that
Return it. Nand flash died.

Yep, I wanted to avoid it, but I don't see other reasonnable option. The phone didn't last more than 24h ... ok, it happens, I know ...
My previous (Still actual (sic)) Phone was a Note 3 and I installed so much roms, soft bricked the device so many times, but I could always restore it ... But not the S7 EDGE ... And I didn't spot any other user with same bootloader issue...
I've just sent back the phone for replacement, Thanks for all who replied to me in this thread
Oh and by the way : don't download 3DMark from play store , it will Hard brick your phone !!! (haha just kidding , i know it's not what caused my phone to die, I'm sure of it , however I won't try to install it anymore i think^^ )
Cheers XDA crew !!
Mine has done just the same. went to bed, woke up this morning and the same message as yourself.

Sorry to hear that bro
Try things to troubleshoot if you wanna, but my advice : don't lose one day of trying to fix it, send it back directly to warranty...
I tried lot of things, key combination to reboot phone in recovery or download, I tried Kies, Odin, ADB....
I believe it's a real samsung bug that will happen to many people, So send it now before sammy is drowned under hard bricked S7 phones and start to have issues to provide replacement devices....
the S7 edge is getting a "urgent" update on approx 3mb..maybe this is a fix of some sort.

That is to correct the Screen Edge sensitivity
For anyone else who runs into this issue, I managed to fix my phone.
Holding the power and VOL down buttons for about 5-10 seconds will reboot the phone; if you hold home at the same time you can get into download mode (might take a couple tries).
From there, you can flash a new bootloader (BL option in odin) and then get back into recovery to do whatever you need to do.
Went from soft-brick to full restore in about ten minutes--not even a factory reset necessary.
Hope this helps!

Went to sleep, phone died, now stuck in a bootloop, can't enter recovery and etc.

Stock 7.0 AT&T model, I went to sleep, forgot to plug in phone. It died in the middle of the night, and the phone refuses to boot past the s7 edge splash screen and restarts every 10-15 seconds. It also will not enter recovery mode and says "Recovery booting..." I can make it enter download mode but I have attempted almost everything I have found and I either get a binary issue or it will successfully flash but then nothing will happen and it will continue to be in this bootloop. I actually brought it to a samsung "representative" at Best buy today and she said it wasn't recognizing the phone at first then it did, and she flashed something that she didn't say what it was and then it still didn't work. She then told me to send it in to samsung but since my glass is cracked (2nd day I had it too...) they try to say that i'm at fault. I just want to know how to fix this, I haven't had my phone in 5 days, I don't care about my data cause it's all already backed up online! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried using samsung smart switch?
use samsung smart switch emergency software recovery initialization which is in the right up corner in "more". if its gonna be stuck and installing the software then connect your phone to a charger, hold volume down and power button and turn it off, this way the phone should stay turned off. then go to download mode and install s7 edge firmware from sammobile through odin

****, I forgot to mention, yes I have tried smart switch and every time I input the model number and S/N, it just closes out. Based on my research, that means initialisation isn't possible.

you'll need quick hand play
push volume down boton and power at the same time when the phone restars quick push the download mod conmbinaison and flash a stock at&t firmware you can download throught sammobile.com site;*,
edit : download the firmware throught this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/att-s7-edge/how-to/firmware-att-s7-edge-g935a-official-t3412312
another edit lol: don't forget to unzip downloaded files
tell me if it works
Recently, I have seen many phones with bootloop problems and, at the end, the sim card was the one to blame.
I know it's silly but have you tried booting it without the sim card and micro sd?

Need Help with S7 Edge (SM-935FD)

Hi! It's my first time making a thread here so guidance is greatly appreciated. Here's how everything started:
I was just casually using my phone (at the time I was using the built-in browser of google assistant, just looking at some news) then suddenly my phone crashed (I've experienced this before every time I was using the google assistant built-in browser, a simple browser can crash this phone?). It just restarted like it normally would, then, after using the phone for a few minutes, it froze again! I waited for it to reboot but now it just powered off and won't turn on (it won't show any sign of life, no logo, not even an icon when I tried to charge). D:
I figured to have it checked by a local technician and when he tried to plug a charger in, a display showed it charged (found it weird but happy at that time). I figured it was the charger so I bought a new one.
So I got home to charge it fully and when I turned it on, it worked normally. However, when I tried to turn my wifi on, notifications popped up and suddenly it froze again! After that, it turned off and when I tried to turn it back on, I got this dreaded red texts on a black screen:
Bootloader exception ( RST_STAT = 0x10000)
Exception: do_handler_sync: DABT_EL1(esr: 0x9600010)
RDX, do not reboot*** ext4_wait_block_bitmap:494: Cannot read block bitpc : 0x8f0261d0 lr : 0x8f02618c sp : 0x8f117fd0
This showed and the phone won't even let me turn it off, so I just waited for the battery to die out. When it did, I tried to charge it again and planned to do a factory reset thinking maybe an app was causing this. I managed to go to the no command icon and manual mode but no factory reset menu showed up (where you navigate using the volume up and down). So I tried to restart but now it died out completely- no button combination would work, it won't charge, no display can be seen. Is it hard bricked?
I tried to wait a whole day thinking I would be able to charge it again, but it has already been three days and I am not able to perform anything.
There it is, I tried to be as detailed as possible. Additional info: I never tried rooting it or flash roms with it, I haven't done anything with the software (or hardware since I am careful) but install apps (officially from the playstore). From how I see it, it's a firmware problem and I was hoping someone here can help me bring my phone back to life. Is this my fault? If I have this repaired, am I the one who should pay for this?
I mainly want to know what the error message means and if there is a way for me to access the phone. (I figured if I have the technician fix this, all they need is a computer with a software that could fix this since it's a problem with the firmware. If that's everything they would do then I could do that too, with your help of course.)
Thanks to all in advance!
Hi. This sounds pretty strange. Technically...it is hard bricked but you can bring it to life. I can tell you what I would do, when I run into such a problem.
ATTENTION: YOU WILL LOOSE ALL OF YOUR DATA EXPECT EXTERNAL SD CARD
First download the newest firmware for your S7 Edge (G-935FD) on SamMobile and unpacking the .zip.
Download Odin in the newest version, open it and put the downloaded files in the right order in Odin (BL, AP, CP and CSC - the files from the firmware from SamMobile has labeling with BL, AP etc.)
Now the tricky part because your phone won't charge and doesn't go on. You have to go in the download mode with your phone (press and hold volume down - home button - power button) than an window appears and press volume up
Connect your phone with your PC (in Odin you can see, that your device is connected) and press start. It will take some time transferring the ROM and your phone will reboot automatically and after some minutes of blinking Samsung logo...the phone should start normally into the SIM card pattern screen.
Now you have a fresh stock ROM installed and everything should work fine again.
But your phone won't get on or will charge...maybe when you connect it to your PC it will charge. Otherwise I see no option to solve your problem. Your phone must charge again that you can go into the download mode and bring your S7 Edge back to life with a clean stock firmware and an working system.
