[Q] truth about the bootloader

I've read elsewhere that the new S4 bootloader has locked.
Can someone verify this?
How does it affect the usage of the device?(i.e CM,AOSP etc)
So far only on the AT&T and Verizon models.
They'll have root for now but no custom recovery/roms.

The AT&T and Verizon bootloader is locked, which will restrict flashing roms and kernels but not root for those devices until the bootloader is unlocked. The international versions seem to be not locked so that does apply to all the octa versions.

short story: the international isn't the carriers are
effect on dev gives them a extra work to do

Is there any simple way to find out whether is locked or not?

There isn't sadly. People were saying if you boot into download mode and it said Write Protection: Enabled that the bootloader was locked, as is the case for atnt and verizon, but the it says the same thing for sprint and our bootloader does not seem to be locked- it's a bit more complicated to actually know and I don't have the tech knowledge to explain it as well as someone else probably could. Probably should find others with your exact phone in the forum and just read what they have said cause this has been a huge topic over the last few days that everyone has been asking.

[Q] Buying Canadian model to use on AT&T?

Hello there,
Since the American versions of this phone seem to be bootloader locked, would it be possible to get the Canadian version, on say, Rogers, which isn't bootloader locked, and use it on AT&T? Would I get LTE this way as well? Thanks.
Absolutely. Should work no problem. Just add apn settings and simcard

Sorry to sound uninformed, but what is APN settings? Also, is there a more practical way to get an unlocked version from within the U.S. itself? Such as from T-Mobile?
I sold a Canadian HTC M7 from Telus on the US market with the bootloader unlocked but the new owner could not simply insert his SIM into the phone. It was SIM locked. Locked bootloader is completely different story than locked SIM (the device is locked to work only with a particular carrier's SIM). I had to get an unlock code and then worked. Be aware about this.
Here is your explanation:

Full conversion from US carrier version to Unlocked model

Not sure how it works with LG but in HTC there is a process where you can convert the carrier version to unlocked model or developer models by changing the model id, cid and then flashing the unlocked firmware.
Is there similar process where we can convert the US carrier model to international or unlocked model with the ability to get direct OTAs from LG instead of the useless US carriers.

No, no similar process.
HTC offers that? That sounds awesome!

No, they do not. it's a "hack" to convert it.

They don't but it's pretty straight forward process once you unlock bootloader.

What are the model numbers of bootloader unlocked AT&T compatible S8s?

There are so many variants my head is spinning.
I just want to be able to go on eBay and buy a phone that I can use on AT&T and flash a ROM on it.
Sm-g950f or sm-g950fd if you want dual sim.

Is it worth waiting to see if the US unlocked version can be BL unlocked? Is the exynos better anyway?
Also what about the +? Is there a bootloader unlocked version of the SM-G950F ?
Just bought the G955F on eBay.

The only thing unlocked with the us unlocked phones is their ability to work on all carriers, nothing to do with bootloader locks. Exynos has an unlocked bootloader, so that makes it better i guess.

So have you got it? how's it working on AT&T? I am getting ready to buy one too.
Got it and it works flawlessly! I'm told I can't do video calling over the network or something like that but I don't use that anyway.

Which LG G6?

I have ATT wireless service. Just wondering is there any root or customs ROMs for the ATT , T Mobile or unlocked version? Which one should i get?

In US only the US997 (without other letters and unbranded) has root and twrp, others model don't
You can also buy the European H870 (no other letters like H870DS), has unlockable bootloader and correct bands for AT&T, TMO.

Nope, the H870
So not much ROM activity for the ATT or T-Mobile versions?
None.
when it comes to the LG flagships, get the single SIM international version which always gets ROM support and root.

"H870" (not DS, not double SIM, etc.) - I believe they're just 32Gb

So the US997 is the way to go. I see US Cellular uses the same model#. Can the bootloader be unlocked to on that one?
