So I've been having this problem for a while now. I've tried contacting T-Mobile about it but they've been completely useless. Basically, I'll lose service randomly and it won't come back for hours (sometimes it'll be gone the whole day). And I mean I can't make a phone call type of lose service. I live in a semi rural area, but there are still plenty of areas that have HSPA/HSPA+. I've tried new SIM cards, going back to complete stock ROM, no root. I'm at a loss at this point. Has anyone had this problem? If anyone cares, I'm currently on PA 3.15, .48 radio and latest boot loader.
Edit: Stock APN settings as well. And when I go to choose a network operator, both T-Mobile and AT&T show up, so I assume it's picking up some sort of signal, it just doesn't want to connect...

I get this sometimes. Sometimes a power off/on works. Other times it doesn't. It's never been for hours, only about 10-15 minutes total but it's really unnerving because it could happen at the worst possible moment. I think I've had this happen to me 3 times since I got my N4.
Would it comfort you to know that its not a error on your part but rather T-Mobile's?

Haha! I figured it was, just seeing if anyone had heard anything from T-Mobile about it or if there was a fix. Thinking of switching to AT&T because of this tbh

Yea I'll constantly lose signal and that normally works but occasionally I'll get it to where nothing works and I'm stuck with a paperweight for the rest of the day (today being one of those unfortunate days)

Do you know anything more than that? Is this some sort of handshake issue between our radio and their cell towers? My wife is on T-Mobile and she doesn't have the issue so I presumed it was my phone.

I was having this issue as well. I would lose service for hours at a time on random days for like a month and a half. I found out that they were doing tower upgrades to get lte up and running (I'm in the north jersey/NYC area). Now my service is alot stronger and rarely ever lose service.

Update: So I went ahead with an RMA and already I think I made the right choice. I'm getting 3-4 bars of H+ in my living room where I used to struggle to get a bar of 3G. So, I apologize to anyone who thought this was a waste of a thread and just cluttered up the N4 forums (God knows this forum needs to get decluttered), but if my experience helps at least one person out, then I guess it wasn't such a waste after all. Moral of the story, if your signal sucks just get it over with and go through an RMA (Google made it super easy and painless):good:

can you use the airraave as a wifi router as well and connect it to a cable modem for internet access, or does it only work for Sprint's network? I would love one if it was like an all in one broadband/mobile network hotspot.

I'm pretty sure my problem is this....Calls placed with google voice cut off after 30 minutes
so the support guy reset all my crap, new prl, redid the activation, all the normal stuff they do. I doubt it will fix it, and he connected me to the other dept that is going to send out an air rave. I don't have great signal, but I don't think this is the issue. Sounds like it is worth trying out though.
seeing issues with ROM's
works great with stock firmware; seeing issues with CM7.0 and CM7.1 where it doesnt automatically find the air rave without my typing in *99
I used mine for a week or two, then got rid of it, too many problems. First off, the damn thing is a total bandwidth hog. Since there is no way to control what phone numbers get to use it, ALL my neighbors were apparently on it, using all my bandwidth all day long. Second, texts on both of my phones would randomly not send and not receive. Third, your phone's gps will be off. The airave puts out it's own gps signal, which is over a mile away from where it actually is, therefore your phone thinks you are a mile away, which makes using google maps to navigate somewhere a pain.
I spent hours on the phone with airave tech support, these are all "features" of the airave...I.e. the airave is programmed to give your phone a false gps reading.

I'm assuming you tried using the online option that allows you to restrict all phone numbers besides the one on your account & weren't successful with it?
The difference has been night & day since I did that, speed wise on the rest of my network. It still goes out every once in a while, but a reboot usually fixes it & I literally would have no service if not for having mine.

How do you do this? I have noticed that when noone is using the phones, the signal light on the Rave is blinking like someone is on it and I didnt know what that was. Also the bandwidth in my house no is horrible. I cant even watch a video on Youtube without it stopping to buffer. If you can help me with this so I can change the settings that would be great, Thx.
That really sucks, I just moved and get horrible signal but I do not want to use an Airave if it basically means all my neighbors will bog my network way down!
Signal is horrid where I live (for any service) so having the airave is a must.

If you read my post just a half inch above yours, you would see you can't do it anymore, airave blocked that feature.
I love mine, we could not use our phones in our house at all until we got ours. our neighbors live far enough away that we never have anyone using our signal, and I have pretty good internet so I doubt it would do much anyway.
Sprint offered me an Air Rave a while back ago, what exactly does it do though?
Enhance your 3G? does it work with 4G?
I have an airrave and it works great! for the most part. Lol.
Hey guys lurker here finally registering to get some help.
I have a nexus 4 with T-Mobile. I bought it unlocked through Google and have it on the same plan I had my G2 on.
My problem is every time I get into a HSPA area my service just drops. Like completely drops. I cannot even make a call. It will come on then off then on then off. It makes the phone useless. When I'm on edge it's perfectly fine.
I went to T Mobile and got a brand new sim car and that did not help my problem.
Much appreciated any help I can get.
Factory reset first and see what happens.

That happens when the radio on the N4 switches between 3G and HSPA doing a factory reset won't affect the radio. In other words its the carrier coverage in your area. Try Straight Talk with At&t

I've got a Nexus 4 on AT&T and i've got HSPA (no +, i've checked in settings). It seems when my phone switches between towers i lose service until i go in and select AT&T from a list of available networks. On other phones in this area i always have Tmobile and AT&T, but with this one i'm getting two AT&T's. I usually select AT&T, but the last few days i've tried selecting "automatically select network." It doesnt appear to have made any changes. Just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before i factory reset this bad boy.
Factory reset, reflash of the stock ROM using the nexus toolkit, unroot and custom Roms cm10 and paranoid android. Nothing has helped my issue. I have the LTE plan and the WAP APN gives me hspa+. Still getting a signal drop every time I move more than a mile or so.

I'm having this exact setting did a replacement help you at all?
I'm making this post because I need some assistance...I've already searched around this forum for a few days but it seems like I may be the only one with this issue...
I got the phone a few days ago, from day one I noticed I've been having network issues. By that I mean every time I try to use any apps that require data such as facebook, youtube, instagram, chrome, google now, and especially speedtest, my network would die for about 10 seconds as it reconnects.
All bars drop, I get the message of "network unavailable", and slowly edge speeds come back, followed by hspa.
I have tested this throughout all parts of Los Angeles already.
I have also replaced the micro sim card twice.
I also hard reset the phone back to stock.
Also reset the APN settings.
Two other people I know of in the area, their Nexus 4's work perfectly fine.
I'm all out of options, the T-Mobile tech support team is also out of options, i was recommended to send it back to Google but I don't want to do that unless it's absolutely necessary as a last resort.
I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with this issue or any suggestions as to what to do?
Thanks so much

Seems like a similar problem to what I'm having. I always just randomly lose reception. Reception is already really really bad for me, but it seems like it's whenever I pick up the phone the network goes out. It's really getting on my nerves. Most places in my house I get no reception. But it's the weirdest thing that happens. I can be sitting on the couch using my phone, and have no bars. But then I set the phone down on the couch to go grab something from the fridge and when I come back I'll have received a text message and I'll have like 2 bars! But then the second I pick the phone back up reception goes out again.
This has been going on for the last month for me, and it's especially bad at work but almost nowhere else.
I think (though I have no concrete evidence) that it's because of their ongoing 1900mhz refarm.
Someone should call tmo and find out.

I've experienced these problems on AT&T (MEdia Net, not DataPro) as well. It happens regardless of how good my signal is. I haven't experienced the other problems you are a time else mentioned.
On the NPR app, it results in some sort of error such that I have to reboot to get the NPR app working again. The app doesn't say something has gone wrong, but it won't load any audio and will hang after waiting.
The signal drops, then picks up again and goes straight to HSPA+:15. This happens to me on the road quite often and I just switch to onboard music rather than fiddling with my phone while driving. The issue has occurred a few times while in Maps, but thankfully I knew how to get back from where I navigated to.
EDIT: Just want to clarify to the poster below me that this occurs REGARDLESS of how good my signal is. It happens when I have better than -50 dBm (I think -70 gets full bars, although I've even seen full bars at -90!) so it can't just be a low signal issue.
I'm pretty sure this happens to all nexus 4s unfortunately. Anyways that is in a poor connection area had this happen.
This happens to me at home. Bounces from 0 to 3 bars constantly. But if I'm outside in an area with strong signal I never go below 3 bars no matter how I hold it.

The first couple weeks I had the N4, I wasn't experiencing any connection issues, but for some weird reason they started last week. It wasn't even fresh after I flashed a new ROM. I think perhaps it's a network issue that is somehow specific to our unique phone and plan combinations and our areas. Anyone using AT&T's MEdia Net plan in Georgia?
I think you guys may have gotten my issue a bit confused, what I'm trying to say is my signal fluctuates depending on location like normal, however only when I use apps that are solely dependent on internet connection, my entire network goes down.

Yeah that's what I'm encountering as well. I wonder what these other guys are talking about?
My network goes down regardless of whether I'm doing anything with the phone or not. I could have just the screen on and it'll be lying on the table and I'll see it go from 2 bars to empty and eventually back.
It's especially bad at work where I have terrible signal to begin with.
Forgot to add.. my coworker with an HTC 8x and another with a Galaxy Nexus are getting the same issues.
So, it's a network problem for sure. I'll post this on the tmo forums tomorrow and see if I can get any official word on the matter.

I experienced something similar on my N4 and called T-Mobile tech support. They had me power off my phone and they "reprovisioned" or "reprogrammed" my data connection or something like that. It's been better since then.

Hello. Since I buy this phone the signal wile on 3G keeps dropping from 5 bars to 2,5,2,3,2 etc. It does not totally disconnects but the issue is draining my battery because is always trying to get a full signal. Plus wile gaming it gets hot and even when I'm just browsing the web only it gets hot. I want to know if is just me or this is not happening to anyone else. This phone is a week old so I am in my 15 days return.
Doesn't sound as if anything is wrong. If your hand is covering the lower portion of the phone, that is where the cell antennae are and you will see reduced bars. If you set it on a table and the bars are more consistent it is your hand that is attenuating the antenna.
It does get warm when it is working hard.

Thanks for the quick reply. Another thing is the battery. Why the battery has more Mhz than the iphone 5 but it last less?
Because Apple designs and optimizes everything, from the OS down to the CPU.

Is there any workaround on the signal? Or any help with the drops? Are you getting 3 to 4 signal bars on 3G?
Thanks for your patience.
PS: Yes i notice that i put it on a table and i get full signal bars but when i grab it it start to drop. Even with a bumper on. That sucks lol.
Holding the phone higher up helps some, so that your hand does not cover the antennas at the bottom of the phone.

yeah could also be how far you are to the nearest cell towers, but your grip on the phone shouldn't make that much of a difference . i've also seen a free app called getril help. it makes your ril(radio interface layer) match your baseband(radio) i've used it in the past when i was playing around with different radios.

yeah could also be how far you are to the nearest cell towers, but your grip on the phone shouldn't make that much of a difference . i've also seen a free app called getril help. it makes your ril(radio interface layer) match your baseband(radio) i've used it in the past when i was playing around with different radios.
good luck dude!

The app says the ril matches. I am sending the phone back to google. I already ordered the replacement. Was thinking that maybe they fixed this internally in the new white one but i'm not taking any chances so i replaced my new black one. BTW I have 7 days with it .
i have n9005 build mj7 and root
today received 2 text message (carrier service) that these people tried to call u, when i called those 2 friends told me my phone was off, which never did
after e hours when i was installing some stuff and found an icon that no signal while in battery consumption screen : cell standby i got : time without signal 0%
i went to connection and choosed my network to get signal back
then after 2 hours i tried to call my phone several times and it was giving me an answer that my phone is off althoug carrier signal pars were full!!, and had to restart phone to get it work back
what is happening?
which is a good app by experince can alert me when i lose signal?
tried reset signal app but it crach each time i try it, may be not compatible with 4.3
found no signal alert but never updated since August 2012, trying it now
is there any way to get a log when i lost the signal

There were a few threads regarding signal issue. Especially US models
mine is from Saudi Arabia, just 1 week old, and this problem just started today

I have a slightly different issue. My data stops working even though it shows 4G signal connected. The up arrow is blinking but the down arrow is not. It happens randomly and will also start working after some time and then stop working again. None of the services work when its not working like opening any site with the browser fails. I am annoyed with this. The same SIM when used on my Nokia 920 doesn't do this. It's constantly working for days. Something with my Note 3. Not rooted. N9005 LTE. UAE. Is there any way to diagnose this? If I restart the phone it starts working again immediately. I don't want to do a factory reset.
there r some apps on market which will alert u if lost data connection and allow u to reset the service by 1 touch
did you solve this problem or just installed that app?
tried to switch firmwares?

My Three sim card was awful for signal on my note no matter what area I was in, but turned out it was a bad card.. My O2 sim has full signal and full 4G connection though all the time anywhere.
My Vodafone 4g had been pretty sheeeit since I've had it. They can't explain why. So last few days I'm on stock and just rooted... Not that many mods and it seems to be holding much better signal and showing LTE as well. Getting 91db whereas it was 101db before.... I dunno what's going on

Just an FYI - Vodafone having massive signal issues currently. - AFAIK they're fixing some borked network routers
They went out of action totally last week for a few hours and have yet to fully recover

I think you are right.... I've not paid anything to them since I had the contract. Refunded £65 this month as well..... Lucky is a 12month jobbie....

Yeah 12month thing with me on O2 also, they don't officially have 4G here in York yet, however I have it full currently. I was gonna go with Vodafone, but couple of my mates have it and they've had non-stop issues similar to yours -- And they're the most bloody expensive too! :\

From previous experiences... Signal was always the best but it's been 3 years since I had them..... And boy have they gone shhhhit. I got o2 contract as well but not 4g as they hadn't rolled any out and weren't even promising to do so. My local Vodafone store told me how they have bought the best equipment and all that shhhhhhit and I thought it to be true..... Man was I wrong. I suppose free phone for nothing as it stands.... So not all bad lol

I returned the phone and got a new one. After that I flashed a Rom of my carrier. Issues are gone
